Popful Mail is a 1994 Sega CD classic from Working Designs. Click here for a description of the gameplay. Despite being given the label action rpg, the emphasis is clearly on action. It was notable for its voice acting, the quantity and quality of which were great for the time. Of course, you won't be hearing any of it in this run, since it can be turned off. Grin

A couple years ago, I did a segmented run of this game which I did not submit. Now, I'm at it again (just bought a dvd recorder, yay) and this time I'm going to do the whole thing at once. I should end up with a final time of slightly over 1.5 hours according to the game's timer.

Detailed Discussion

1) Of the three characters, I will be using Mail for 90% of the game as she is the fastest. Gaw is used in a few places where his high jumps are needed and also against most bosses late in the game, while Tatt is used mainly for mid-game bosses. I will also be jumping up most ladders rather than climbing them which saves time.  I only do it with ones against a wall though, as it's awkward otherwise.

2) Let's talk items. The only items I will purchases are two weapons, one for Tatt and one for Gaw. Weapons are only really worth using against bosses; most of the time I will just hit regular enemies once to stun them.

No armor is necessary, which means that for pretty much the entire game two hits will be enough to kill me. The tough part is that anyone who's played this game knows how one hit can easily turn into two due to the momentary loss of control upon being hit.

So I will be picking up a few healing items. You start the game with one elixyr (automatically restores life upon death) and one apple. I am going to be picking up an additional 3 apples and 3 bananas upon the way, all of which are directly in my path. It would be very easy to pick up two more elixyrs, which would only take about 30 seconds, but I'm not planning on doing that. I will also be picking up an amulet later on in the game which definitely helps speed up some parts in last world.

3) I will be picking up several healing items as noted above, but your character is also healed after each successful boss fight. Unfortunately, only once is it practical to switch characters to deliver the final hit to get healed. However, there are two other bosses where you can switch characters very fast after the final hit which helps out.

4) I used to think that the toughest boss fight in the game was Goradus, who drops rocks from the ceiling upon being hit which are very hard to dodge. I figured out the simplest solution though: pause the game. That's right, just pause the game a few times so you can see where to stand. Seems kind of unsporting, but whatever. Nothing in the rules against doing something like that, right?
Thread title:
I made my first attempt today, and got all the way to the second to last area (Maniac Mazes) before dying. I really thought I was get through it the first time, and then I was hit quickly twice out of nowhere and died.

I should be good for one attempt per day, and my goal is to complete this before MGS4 comes out.  Smiley
Lurkin' and watching!
I never got around playing Popful Mail but it's on my to-do list.

Heh, since it looks like you have everything planned already so maybe I'll play this game right away!

I haven't played this in so long, but I'm glad you're doing it. Doesn't seem like it would be very hard either. Everything you said looks good, and you can pause, but it will be part of your time of course.

I fully expect you to run Vay next at this rate, heh.

There can only be justice in this world when there is next a full run of Dark Wizard for each character.    Cheesy

On topic:  This sounds excellent and I look forward to seeing this...IIRC there are other games/some stuff that also exist in this series that never left Japan...perhaps some of my Bounty list to-be at that....

I didn't enjoy Vay, actually. I don't have the game any more so it's a moot point.

I'm done with the Sega CD after this. Although I will say that one of the reasons I enjoy doing games for this system is that there are no TASes which makes it more fun.

I don't actually like Vay either, you just had this Working Designs Sega CD trend I mean.

So if you're done with Sega CD, what's next?

Amen to that. Running Dragon Force with each character would also be quite interesting.

I did it: 1 hour, 32 minutes, 45 seconds is the final time.

So now I have a run in the bag, although I made some stupid jumping errors during the game which probably could save a minute. I also missed a couple shots on the final bosses due to my hands being sweaty.  Smiley

I'd like to think I could get under 1:31, maybe even 1:30 in a perfect run.

Congrats on the further whittling down of your time.  8-)
Haven't posted in 2.5 weeks, but that doesn't mean I haven't been trying. And tonight, I finally beat the game for the second time and came up with a new record of 1:31'10"!

That's an improvement of 95 seconds from my previous run. I found a couple of new things to save some time:

1) There is one cut scene (between fighting Sven and Chargon) which is 10 seconds faster if you use Gaw than Mail/Tatt.

2) New strategy for fighting Chargon, where I can hit him 3 times at once instead of 2. He can only be hit when he throws the knife, so this means I only need 7 opportunities to hit him compared to 10 previously. I always knew about the safe spot a little ways back, but apparently you can get up very close to him and you'll be safe too. I actually read about this while searching for old Popful Mail posts on the newsgroups.

3) Various small things like jumping over an enemy of going underneath him.
I've been trying to improve my time over the past month, but I've yet to have another successful run. If I don't improve my time (1:31'10") by the end of the month, I'll probably just submit it, because I'm getting a little tired of this game.

Yes, I definitely am done with the Sega CD, unless anyone wants to see a run of Panic (which would the least skilled and most boring run ever, though the credits are funny and people would have no idea what was going on, so maybe it would work as a "joke run").

I think I may try to plan a Dragon Quest V run. That one would have at several insanely difficult segments.

DQV would be an awesome run indeed to see.  Shocked

CMiller did a joke April Fools run of Snatcher, you could do Panic (I've never played it myself though, but I know about it), and then someone could do Sewer Shark. Lips Sealed

What version of DQ5, SFC? DQ5 is actually my favorite one probably...

I might as well do a run of Panic, it takes only four minutes to beat the game.

Yes, SFC. I have the cart.

I've been trying to be a little more reckless (foregoing most healing items) without any success, so I've gone back to doing a more conservative approach. Tonight, I completed another run.

I knew it didn't seem like I had broken the record, but I was surprised to see a time of 1:45'xx", or about 14 minutes longer than my record run so far. I've noticed that the timer in this game messes up sometimes when playing normally (like when saving after dying and going back to the title screen), but this is the first time it's happened in a speed run.

So what I did was measure the real time of the run and my record run, and it ended up being only 18 seconds slower than the record run! I figured out that the reason this happened is because I started over a couple of times before the good run, and it must've added that time. The real run didn't start until about 4 minutes into the dvd. So you're probably thinking, how does that add up to 14 minutes? Well, there's a cut scene when you start the game that I skip, and it includes that time whether you watch it or not. I also realized that my two successful attempts before this were on the first try of the night, so it wasn't an issue until now. So that explains that.

This may be a game that requires real time-timing due to this.

EDIT: Appears it's only the first cut scene in the game that does this.
Just discovered a much easier way to beat one of the longest boss fights in the game, the Clobbster. I keep finding new little things to improve my time, awesome. Now I just need to put it all together.

:plays you the A-Team building theme music:
New record run tonight:

1:27'06"

4 minutes faster than the old one, wow. Almost entirely due to the new Clobbster strategy. The time above is the game clock, since in this run I beat it on the first attempt of the night. Real time is 84:13.

I still think there's room for improvement, mainly in the 2nd Nuts Cracker fight. If I can beat him in two bodies instead of three, then that would save 30+ seconds. So close to doing it this time, but I messed up. I also made a number of stupid jumps in this run which only waste a second or two each but look bad.

I bet a perfect run could be under 83.
Just finished another run, and it was 1:27'12", five seconds slower than the previous record. I messed up a couple shots on the easy final boss, which at about 10 seconds of wasted time made the difference.
New run & record set just now:

1:26'13" (Real time = 83'16")

I'm going to submit this one! After 6 months of playing, I now have a run that I'm really proud of. This is about as good as I can do without improving the Nuts Cracker fight as mentioned earlier (that's something I have a very hard time doing even outside of runs). That would've saved ~15 seconds. Other than that, it was virtually perfect. Maybe one other boss fight where I could've saved a similar amount of time with some luck. I believe I only healed twice, and I never ended up using the elixyr that I started the game with.
Thread title changed as this is now on the verification list, so help out if you can.

I should clarify on this. I don't technically pause, I just go to the menu during which the timer still runs.
Did anyone else see the news on tasvideos that Sega CD re-recording is now possible? There's a Sonic CD TAS up there now, the first for the system. Should be exciting to see what they can do for this game.
If anyones's interested, this guy currently does an LP of Popful Mail. Perhaps useful for verifying things.
