There lies two problems with using the Starter.

First, the starter isn't optimal for some of the Gym Leader battles.  For instance, Bulbasaur vs. Blaine is a bad type-combination.  The biggest road-block in the starter category is Charmander vs. Misty, who would take a long time leveling up in order to manage that.

You could argue higher levels, but that takes more time.  This is a speed run, and we want to avoid as many trainers as possible.  With that, we want Pokémon who can efficiently KO many trainers despite low levels.  I'm going with X-Accuracy/Horn Drill and MrScaryMuffin is going with a single Kadabra.
I'm not arguing for Bulbasaur or Charmander; I'm arguing for Squirtle.  The only difficult battle is the one against Misty, and  by going around Nugget Bridge first, you can get Bite and make that fight easy.  After that, the fact that you're at such a high level (just by doing only required fights) makes all the remaining Gym Leaders easy.  You can teach Ice Beam for Erika, and Dig for Lt. Surge.  Catching and training other Pokemon is a waste of time, and really unnecessary, if you ask me.
You can go ahead and try, but I think the time spent to get Bite isn't worth it in the end.  On the other hand, a lvl. 15 Pikachu on Yellow beat Misty easily.  It won't take too much time to use Pika here.
Okay, finished my half-run.

Now my summarized run:

I named my chracter Yellow and the rival Blue.  Quick and easy.

I'm playing the Yellow version, so we can compare versions if necessary.

I played through the intro, and defeated Eevee.  It gives 97 experience if you're keeping count.  I rushed to Viridian City, and ran into a level 8 Pidgey on the way.  It also KOed Pikachu.  Got the Parcel, carefully made my way back.  I got the Potion the guy gives you on the return trip as well.  I healed at my house after getting the Pokédex.  I made my way back to Viridian City, where Pikachu leveled up to 7.  At the Mart, I bought two Pokéballs, one for Nidoran Male and one for Sandshrew (HM slave).  I went to Route 22 and caught a Nidoran Male in my second random battle.  I was lucky, for it was also lvl. 4, which makes it slightly easier to train.  I avoided Gary, ensuring that Flareon will be my opponent.  Maybe here, I'll save next time, to make sure I don't waste too much time catching Nidoran Male.  I went to Viridian Forest and made sure to fight all trainers for badly needed experience for Brock, since Nidoran Male needs to be at level 12 to get Double Kick.  To train Nidoran, it was the classic send and switch training.  Once Nido hit lvl. 8, it learned Horn Attack and no longer needed the help from Pikachu.  I took the potions in the area, as well as the hidden one in front of the last trainer.  I healed at the Pokémon Center (PC) in Pewter City.  Then I went to Brock's Gym, avoided the trainer, and saved in front of Brock.

Time elapsed: 31 minutes.
Team: Nidoran - 12, Pikachu - 9

Brock was no problem.  Double Kick took two to kill Geodude, and a couple Leers plus Double Kick took out Onix.  I went on to Mt. Moon.  By my count, there are four required trainers, but I fought the last one (the Jigglypuff), for easy exp. for Nido.  Random thought: How did Thunder Wave miss?  I saved at Mt. Moon's PC.  In Mt. Moon, Pikachu took the lead so it could level up for Misty.  It KOed Zubats while I got TM 12 (Water Gun), a potion, Rare Candy, and an Escape Rope.  Only the last two trainers (Super Nerd and Team Rocket) are required in Yellow, but I accidently fought a Super Nerd next to the Rare Candy.  It helped though, as Nido hit 16 and evolved.  I quickly taught it TM 12.  I also accidently fought a Lass with Oddish and Bellsprout; that wasted time.  I picked up the Moon Stone in the top right corner, and evolved Nido to Nidoking (King).  King fought the Super Nerd and T. Rocket.  I picked up the Helix Fossil, simply because it's closer.  Left Mt. Moon, and picked up the Great Ball for easy Pidgey catching later.  Note: Kadabra is a wild pokémon.  Maybe I should capture it in my next run and see if it makes any difference.  I arrived in Cerulean City, healed at the PC, and saved.

Time elapsed: 55 minutes
Current Levels: Nidoking - 18, Pikachu - 14

I fought all the trainers in the gym with Pikachu, which leveled him up to 15 and learned Double Team.  This is vital for Misty, so I can avoid unnecessary battles for exp.  I healed Pikachu at the PC, and saved before Misty.

Time elapsed: 59 minutes
Current Levels: Pikachu - 15, Nidoking - 18

My strat vs. Misty was basically Thunder Wave Staryu, pray for no criticals, and Double Team to the max.  I won while using only two potions, but I got lucky.  Starmie's Bubblebeam hit Pika and nearly KOed him.  It left it with 3 HP.  Pika gained two levels in that battle.  I went straight for Bill's place and swept Gary with just King.  Nido fought all of the battles from here on out.  There are 6 required battles on Nugget Bridge.  After the battles, I returned to Cerulean City, healed, and saved.

Time elapsed: 1 hour 12 minutes
King's Level: 21

I caught Sandshrew before heading up to Bill.  I probably could've done it when I left Mt. Moon, but whatever.  If I remember correctly, there are four required battles to reach Bill, but I fought an extra for Seismic Toss that I planned to give to Kadabra.  I did the whole thing with Bill,  returned to Cerulean, healed, and saved.

Time elapsed: 1 hour 23 minutes
King's Level: 23

I got Dig, and made my way to Vermillion.  There are only two required battles here, and they're pretty obvious.  At Vermillion, I healed, got the Bike Voucher, and went to the Mart.  I sold Bide and the Nugget and bought 15 Repels.  Went to S.S. Anne and saved at the entrance so I can figure out which items to get and what rooms they were in.

Time elapsed: 1 hour 29 minutes
King's Level - 25
In the S.S. Anne, I got everything eventually.  Taught TM 8 to Nidoking.  By getting the items, I think I fought 6 battles.  I fought Gary and crushed him.  Healed back at the PC, made inventory space (everything but potions and Pokéballs), taught Cut to Sandshrew, and went to Surge.  Saved at the entrance.

Time elapsed - 1:43
King - 28

I got really lucky.  The switch was in the bottom left corner and its partner to its right.  No trainer battles for me.  Two Body Slams later, Raichu was done.  Went back to Cerulean, and got the Bike.  Went to Rock Tunnel at this point.  There are only 2 required battles here.  I healed at the PC, and saved.

Time elapsed - 1:49
King - Didn't write down

In Rock Tunnel, there are 5 required battles.  You can avoid the rest by hugging the walls (or memorize their locations).  I used some of my Repels here too.  I entered Lavender and left right away, but I took the hidden item.  There is 1 required battle between Lavender and Celadon (fight the Gambler, else the Lass wastes time by walking to your location).  Made my way to Celadon City.  I healed at Celadon, went to the Mart, bought TM 7 (Horn Drill), 20 X-Accuracy, Fresh Water, and Soda Pop.  I gave Soda Pop to the girl and got TM 48 (Rock Slide), which I immediately taught to Nidoking along with Horn Drill.  His moveset: Body Slam / Rock Slide / Water Gun / Horn Drill.  I got the hidden PP Up, increased Horn Drill.  Went to Erika's Gym.  There are 2 required battles here.  Unfortunately, I got paralyzed in the second battle and was forced to heal at the PC because I had no Paralyze Heals.  Horn Drill is dependent on speed.  If you're slower, then it has no effect.  This healing part wated one minute.  Anyway, I saved in front of Erika.

Time elapsed - 2:06
Nido - 33

The first battle with the Horn Drill strategy.  3 Horn Drills later, I emerge the winner.  Went to Game Corner, got the PP Up hidden in the plant.  I looted a Rare Candy, HP Up, TM 7, Nugget, and Iron.  I also switched to Battle Style: Set since King was the only one I'm using.  T. Rocket fell easily, and Giovanni fell to Water Gun and Body Slam.  Got the Silph Scope and the hidden Super Potion behind it.  Since I left without the Escape Rope, I fought 6 battles (including T. Rocket, Giovanni, and the poster guard).  I healed at the PC and saved.

Time elapsed - 2:20
King - 35

I gave the water to Saffron's guards, and went to Lavender.  Swept Gary, and used Repels to get to the top.  There are three required battles with Channelers, and I admit I almost got KO'ed because Rock Slide didn't connect for one reason or another.  I also took every item within sight in the Pokémon Tower.  Marowak fell to Water Gun, and T. Rocket is blasting off again.  Went to Saffron City, healed at the PC, and saved.

Time elapsed - 2:32

Entered Silph Co.  Headed to 7th floor, got the Card Key and hidden Elixir.  Unfortunately, I maxed on items, so I couldn't loot floor 10 for its Earthquake TM, Rare Candy, and Carbos.  I fought three battles to reach Gary.  Here I saved again.

Time elapsed - 2:37
King - 38

Against Gary, I used the X-Accuracy/Horn Drill on him and KO'ed all except Kadabra.  He took one Body Slam, but I got lucky because I took a hit by the move Confusion.  If it was Psybeam, King was gone.  Got Lapras, and healed with potions.  Fought Team Rocket, which took longer than necessary.  Giovanni fell to X-Accuracy/Horn Drill except for Persian again, which took two Body Slams.  I took the Master Ball, deposited items, and then looted the 10th floor.  Left Silph Co, caught Pidgey on the way to Celadon City.  Healed at the PC at Celadon, and saved.

Time elapsed - 2:48
Nido - 41
Do you know the Muffin Man?
Hm...riding close to 3 hours is perhaps more than I would like. Then again we haven't taken a look which trainers we should battle. I'm still doing my data collection run right now, but I can do a practice solo Kadabra run on my actual cartridge (data run is being down on emulator :p).

I'm guessing that battles are eating up most of your time. Even though you're skipping quite a few trainers, the ones that you do have to fight are costing you time and cash (for items). I guess the strongest merit in my run is that Kadabra owns all ^_^. No need to double team or X-anything, oh joy.

Also, have you checked out how much X-accuracy increases your stat by? Just tell me the base stat of your King and how many X-accuracies you need to max out and I'll figure it out for you. In case you're wondering, yes, speed does affect accuracy, so X-speed also helps.

I just thought of another move combo that can help immensely. Both Swords Dance and Swift can be found in TM forms and this may be faster...just depends on the base attack of Swift, of which I do not know.

A squirtle/zapdos run will definitely work. However, I believe it'll take longer than necessary. The reason I'm sticking to my Kadabra is because of its offensive power, making battles nice and short (exception being Sabrina).

Either case, keep working on your run Forgotten_one. When I'm done collecting data, I'll release it here or link it so that all can see. I wonder if Yellow should be seperate from RB because of the few differences?
Do you know the Muffin Man?
Not really a double post this time since it has been awhile since I posted the last one :p
Data collection run had me with a level 24/25 wortortle by the time I reached Gary in Cerulean, was almost a no problem battle at that point. I think I will fight every trainer along the way minus the first bug catcher in mt. moon and the first two rockets.

I've been collecting data on how much exp I'm getting from each trainer from which pokemon as well as calculating how much exp is needed to level squirtle thus so far (simply by adding the "exp needed til x level" and "total exp gained so far" stat to get exp needed for x level). Battles thus far have been quick and easy, max three hits to take down anyone thanks to my level superiority.

The big part is coming up, I'm going to calculate the average time it'll take me to capture an Abra. I'll say 33 trials before I settle down and figure it out and decide whether a single segmented run for Kadabra solo is possible.

I'll be putting up my speed run FAQ on a personal website later on...it'll be pretty bare, just the exp data that I've collected so far and a few personal notes. I just realized that I have not been keep track of the money I get from people. However, I do not believe that this will not be a problem since most of us find ourselves with cash to spare anyways (except maybe those buying lots of X-stuff?)
Cant wait to see that run :D:D
I've decided to start a Squirtle/Zappy run today.  Last time I did a quick run for fun, I got to the final Gary battle outside of Victory Road in 3 hours.  I'm interested to see if the Kadabra strategy would work, however.  I suppose if you catch the Kadabra at a high enough level, it might work.
Do you know the Muffin Man?
First five attempts at getting an abra are as follows:

1.under a minute
2. under two minutes
3. six minutes
4. under a minute
5. under 5 minutes

Smiley Hopefully the rest will remain under 2/3 minutes and the average time will be somewhere around 3 minutes, definitely worth it I think. Note that this doesn't matter if I'm doing a segmented run.

I'm so psyched to hear Pikachu is so useful!

...Yes, I'm a dork. With 3 stuffed Pikachu.

That's dang quick if I say so myself. I remember back in the day when I beat it in around 10 hrs and I thought I was pimp... SS Anne in 1:xx is SWEET. anyways, good luck. A side challenge that I'm presenting for anyone interested in pokemon and is extremely hardcore, is to beat my Poke'mon Report Score in Poke'mon snap. I know this is off topic but I just want someone to challenge me, seeing as I have the highest report score I've ever heard of. if anyone is honestly interested and wants to know the individual pic scores, PM me cause I have it all written out.

No of PKMN seen: 63 Kinds
No of PKMN Signs seen: 6 Signs
Report Score:            295630 points

no I am not kidding. in fact I'll submit it to TG as soon as I get home.
With regards to X-Accuracy, it ensured that my Horn Drill did hit all the time.  Here are the stats of Nidoking at 41.

HP: 133
Attack: 101
Defense: 84
Speed: 87
Special: 79
Do you know the Muffin Man?
Did you just use one X-accuracy? Or many? Exactly how many is what I would like to know (for when King is level 41)
I will be brief with the end here.

I went to the Mart and bought 10 X-Speed.  These will be the clincher.  I got Fly, ran from Snorlax.  Avoided all battles down Cycling Road.  Stopped at the Mart, sold excess items, and bought 10 Super Repels.  Went to Safari Zone, used two of the Super Repels, and got all items in view as well as the Gold Teeth and HM 3.  Healed at the PC, fought two battles to reach Koga, saved.

2 hours 59 minutes
Nido - 42

I used only X-Accuracy, then Horn Drilled all Venonats.  Venomoth nearly killed me with Psychic, but Earthquake took it out, since it was faster.  I got HM 4 and the Rare Candy.  Flew to Saffron City, healed, and went through Sabrina's Gym, avoiding battles.  I got lost though.  I should use a FAQ next time.  Anyway, I reached Sabrina and saved.

3 hours 3 minutes
Nido - 42

Used X-Speed, and Body Slam took out Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam.  Next I flew to Pallet Town, and Surfed to Cinnabar, while using Super Repel.  Rushed through Pokemon Mansion, avoided all battles, but got the Carbos, Rare Candy, two TMs, and the Secret Key.  I used Super Repel through there too.  I went to Blaine, but accidently got into a battle because I didn't read the question, so one battle there.  Saved before Blaine, but I can't remember Nido's level.

3 hours 11 minutes

Beat Blaine without boosters, only used Earthquake.  Flew to Viridian City.  Went to the Gym.  There are two required battles here, but I messed up the Karate Master so I had to walk the long way around.  That took some time.  I got  the Revive in here (never know when you'll need it).  Saved before Giovanni, and I didn't write down the level.

3 hours 18 minutes

X Speed and X Accuracy swept Giovanni with Horn Drill.  Fun.  Rested at the PC, and went to Gary.  Saved before Gary.

3 hours 23 minutes
Nido - 47

Went through the Pokemon League, saved at the Entrance to Victory Road.

3 hours 27 minutes

Rushed through Victory Road.  Used Super Repels (I had one left), and accidently got into two battles.  I did get into Indigo Plateau.  There, I rested, withdrew all PP restoring items, bought 10 Max Potions, withdrew all Rare Candies, and saved.

3 hours 35 minutes
Nidoking - Lvl. 50

Lorelei.  Here's the gist of it.  I used X-Speed, she used Bubblebeam.  Nido survives.  I used X-Accuracy, she used REST!  Nido promptly killed all with Horn Drill.

Went to Bruno.  Forgot to use Ether, so I ended up only using X-Accuracy and Horn Drill on Machamp.  Earthquake took care of the rest (2HKO on Onixes, Hitmonchan) and OHKO Hitmonlee.

Saved before Agatha, used an Elixir.

3 hours 39 minutes
Nido - Lvl. 52

Agatha used Lick, I used X-Speed.  Earthquake and Rock Slide took out her team.  Didn't need Horn Drill, couldn't use Horn Drill due to Ghost-type.  Saved before Lance.

3 hours 42 minutes
Nido - 53

After 6 tries, where all six started with Hydro Pump and KOing Nidoking, I gave in.  I used all 7 Rare Candies and saved again.  Here are my Nidoking's stats at Lvl. 60.

HP: 196
ATK: 153
DEF: 126
SPD: 132
SPC: 119

3 hours 42 minutes
Nido - 60

Fought Lance.  I used X-Accuracy, he used Hydro Pump AND MISSED!  Horn Drill the rest of the way.  Aerodactyl took a long time though.  I was forced to use 2 Max Potions here, but Rock Slide won out.  Dragonite was slower than Nidoking, so it fell to Horn Drill.  I used a Max Potion after the battle, and Ether on Horn Drill.  Saved again.

3 hours 46 minutes
Nido - 61

Finally, Gary.  Here goes the battle, complete with animation (it seems forced here).  Unfortunately, it's rather boring since I only used one move here: Horn Drill.

YELLOW sent out NIDOKING!
BLUE sent out SANDSLASH!
YELLOW used X Accuracy!
NIDOKING's accuracy rose!
SANDSLASH used EARTHQUAKE! Nidoking had 50 HP left.
NIDOKING used HORN DRILL!
A one-hit KO!
SANDSLASH fainted!
BLUE sent out ALAKAZAM!
YELLOW used X Speed!
NIDOKING's speed rose!
ALAKAZAM used KINESIS!
NIDOKING's accuracy fell!
NIDOKING used HORN DRILL!
A one-hit KO!
ALAKAZAM fainted!

The most difficult part of the battle was over.  The rest of the battle went like this:

BLUE sent out EXEGGUTOR/MAGNETON/CLOYSTER/FLAREON!
NIDOKING used HORN DRILL!
A one-hit KO!
EXEGGUTOR/MAGNETON/CLOYSTER/FLAREON fainted!

Gary goes through his spiel, Oak goes through his, I'm inducted into the Hall of Fame with the following team.

Nidoking Lvl. 62
Pikachu Lvl. 17
Sandshrew Lvl. 8
Lapras Lvl. 15
Pidgey Lvl. 20

7 Pokémon caught, 95 Pokémon seen

Credits roll.  AFter THE END appears, I return to the Main Menu.

Final Time: 3 hours 51 minutes

YOU ARE A CHAMPION AMONG MEN!!! #_#
IMM...POS....sible.........
it can't be done!
could...not...be conceived...

nice job though. do you think it's been absolutely honed or do you think a second run could shave off a decent amount of time?
either way I'm happy. Can't wait to see it.
When I first heard this game was going to be run, I thought no way.... It'll never be beaten in less than a little more than 7 hours. But sub 4 hours.... OMG, good job. your like the pokemon king if u can do that, even if it is segmented.

This was only a practice run; it isn't saved.  When I do the actual run, it'll be on VHS.  There were many, many mistakes with this run that I hope to clear up, as well as hope for cleaner battles.  There are a few things that I want to clear up.

1) Segments.  I saved many, many times in this run.  I could cut down the segments, but to how many?

I'm thinking right now:

1) Before Brock
2) Before Misty
3) Before Surge
4) Before Erika
5) Before Gary (Silph Co.)
6) Before Koga
7) Before Sabrina
8) Before Blaine
9) Before Giovanni
10) Before Lorelei
11) Before Agatha
12) Before Lance
13) Before Gary (Final)
Do you know the Muffin Man?
Good job Smiley I'm going to aim for sub 3:30 and beat you! Mwhahahaha!

For me if I'm doing segmented I think I'll only save in a few places (as I have less riskier battles than you do).

1. Before Gary in Cerulean
2. Surge's gym (stupid random trash cans)
3. Before Sabrina (because she's a whore)
4. Before elite 4 (because Lorelei is one too)

I have a suggestion for your run. Instead of avoiding all trainers, find the ones that you can beat quickly (that is, those weak to earthquake or surf or what else you've got on your list) and waste them for quick exp. Then again, the Rare Candies at the end seem to do the trick...but it can't hurt right? Lol...and yes, animation is forced on final battle with Gary.
That's what I thought.  It won't matter too much with me; Horn Drill has a very simple animation.  Doesn't make for too much excitement.

I have to ask something: Does playing on the Gameboy Player make a difference vs. the Super Game Boy?  I have both, which is why I was wondering.
I'm addicted to games
http://speeddemosarchive.com/gbComparison.html

Short answer: yes, use the GBP.
There's a Speed Guide on GameFAQs for the Red/Blue Version, which the author says he got 3:07 with.  But since you're doing Yellow, I guess it wouldn't be the same since you start with Pikachu.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gameboy/game/907714.html

It's the Speed Guide by Milcotti

Can't wait to see your run anyway!
I was working on a list of the main differences between each version.

1) Introduction is a little longer, due to the additional scenes of catching Pikachu and Gary's whining.
2) The old man catching the Ratatta can't be skipped.
3) One additional trianer in Viridian Forest (has one of each Nidorans).
4) Brock is two levels lower than in R/B.
5) All Rocket trainers right before Giovanni have been replaced by Team Rocket's Pokémon (Ekans/Arbok, Koffing/Weezing, Meowth).
6) Surge has one Raichu at Lvl. 28.
7) Erika has Tangela, Weepinbell, and Gloom instead at 30, 32, and 32 respectively.
8) Koga has 3 Venonats and one Venomoth, at 44, 46, 48, and 50 respectively.
9) Sabrina has Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam all at Lvl. 50.
10) Blaine has Lv 48 Ninetales, 50 Rapidash, and 57 Arcanine.
11) Giovanni has Lv 50 Dugtrio, 53 Persian and Nidoqueen, and 55 Rhydon and 55 Nidoking.
12) Some Pokemon learn moves earlier (read Nidoran Male with Double Kick at 12).
13) Pikachu has an entirely unique moveset, which I abuse (Double Team at 15).

I think that's all of the main differences.
I love FuSN 1G - SG1!
You know what? I'll go and try my strat, to see what time I could really get. (And this time I'll actually fight Blaine's and Giovanni's gym-trainers.)

I now know how bad my test run was. I have to do better.
