A hat riding a mage?!
For #4, would it be faster to skip the Rich Boy?
There are lots of guides that list which trainers have which pokemon/level - use this EXP calculator to work out how much you get from them.

Total EXP needed for a given Torchic/Mudkip level:
EXP = int(1.2 * Lv^3) - (15 * Lv^2) + (100 * Lv) - 140

(The int() function basically means round down to the nearest integer)
So if my half-asleep brain figured the example right, to get to Lv50 you'd need 112510 exp.
You're going to need the Rich Boy for money if we're aiming for X-items.
All right, another part of my guide Grin

Ok, before I move on, by request I will more specifically explain the way through routes 111 through 113. Start off North of Mauville, go north, skipping the man near the house (he'll make you go through a series of battles with his whole family, a big waste of time!!!!!). If you have Combusken by now (should be at around lvl 33) face the two campers in the route, and move on though the grass to skip the other campers. Face the hiker, then to through fiery path. Face the two cool trainers on route 112 then move on (Although I heard you can skip the male one if your timing is right.). Now use a repel and move through the volcanic ash, facing only the parasol lady and one youngster. You can skip the rest of the trainers pretty easily. Get to Fallarbor town, and immediately go to the crater in the town to pick up a rare candy. Stock up on super repels in the Pokemart.

16. Move down the bridge on route 114, face the camper and use a super repel. Go up the mountain route, facing the kindler and two hikers.

17. Move through Meteor falls, watching the dispute between team Aqua and Magma.

18. Now back track to Mt. Chimney (do not use the route going the other way through Meteor Falls, it's slower!), battle all the grunts and Maxie/Archie.

19. Go down the Jagged Pass, avoiding all the trainer's you possibly can, and get to Lavaridge.

I'll continue the guide next time Wink

Emulator (from what I've noticed before the file screen)??? That's not allowed unless you are making a test run to show the visual idea how Battle X could be done with Pkmn A & B, etc.

Huh? My game has always done that on a new game?
DS Dictator
Fair enough I was just worried that you were going to submit the whole thing and get rejected for using the emulator.
Well since the thread hasn't been discussed for over a month it's a good idea as a demostration on how the segment plan and uses of other Pokémon can be made/used.

Just for your youtube users next segment is in the making.
Catchin' them all
I haven't watched them yet, but I'm glad someone finally started this. Good luck! Cheesy I'll watch them in a sec.

Edit: what nature does the Torchic have? And does it have good IVs? Just wondering.
Isn't it faster to walk up to a trainer and talk to them rather than having the exclamation mark appear? I suppose the battle with wild Zigzagoon is excusable, since the rest of the segment was very good.

Also, huge audio desync =P

Are you actually from the UK (going by YouTube info); there don't seem to be many.

Yer I am from the UK. I have no idea about the audio it always seems to happen somewhere down the line.

Surely all the fights I got in involved me facing the right direction as soon as the fight ended?

It's about +1 second for exclamation marks, and +0.5 seconds for non exclamation marks in terms of delays IIRC. Might need to dig up Emerald to check that. Either way, you'll probably save a minute from trainer facing at least at the end of the run with talking.

I'll try to get more specific next time, but useful items are very rare in any Pokemon game, the best being rare candy. I don't think think there are that many useful items up to that point. And when it comes to trainers Cool Trainers, Ninjas, Hikers and campers are the best for training.

No, best item would be a lucky egg, if there are any in this set of games.  I suggest using the itemfinder over the entire map and seeing what you can come up with.  In fire red, I found 10 hidden rare candies, 7 of which are en route, on top of the 4 out in the open.
DS Dictator
Sadly as far as I know there isn't any Lucky Eggs obtainable in this game. There aren't any wild Chanceys in the game that hold them. I don't even know if it is an "invisible" item that can be found.

So Rare candies are the alternate method.

Yup. I remember Chancey NOT being on the Hoenn Dex.
Also tenkiforecast
*checks Serebii.net*

that is correct, Chansey is not one of the base 200 in the Hoenn dex. It's not even in Emerald either, so Chansey/Lucky egg is out.

Is anyone actually actively running/planning a run for either of these games?  I'd love to do it myself, but I don't own it, and I can't find it locally Sad

In lieu of a bounty, if someone sends me a copy of sapphire for keepsies, I will guaranteed put out a run of the game.  I intend to make it as much of a big deal as fire red was too, in terms of route planning and etc.
Catchin' them all
I could do one but can't be arsed. Figuring out the route is easy.

But meh, I'm focused on Yellow and Red atm anyway. :/
There's a word for that
I'd like to run Sapphire in particular, and in a couple of weeks I'll have the time, buuut I don't own a GameCube Sad It would be segmented, but then trying to manipulate Pickup Rare Candies in an SS run is pretty much out of the question. I'd need to do another test run first anyway, most preferably emulated to save time. And if I DO end up with a GameCube, I'd probably prefer to improve the segmented Gold/Silver first, since that would be more straightforward (no 1% chance manipulation...) and a good first game to test my speedrunning skillz on. On the other hand, that would take like a week, after a test run to get my bearings and plan stuff out. I'm pretty sure a run of this game would take a few months, provided I don't muck it up >_> Accursed Game Freak and their inability to put more than one save slot in their games.

You're a genius!  *Goes off to study the practical applications of pickup for segmented both basic and e4r2 runs*

Pickup is one of the best things ever made for HM Slaves. I love GameFreak.

Also, I'd reccomend Mudkip, and if anyone tries low%, I will seriously be amazed.

Mudkip could be used for Emerald or Ruby maybe, but Sapphire is definitely Torchic, strange as it sounds, as the Water/Dark Carvanha/Sharpedos are weak to Fighting. Pickup will be used initially to evolve Torchic to Combusken before the first gym, and then maybe later on if it proves to be useful. Evolving to Blaziken before fighting Winona would be nice, but it's a balance ratio of speed : sanity. Also note that in Emerald, Pickup works differently, such that it isn't possible to start obtaining Rare Candies with it until Lv 21+.
Hidden Rare Candies in Sapphire(/Ruby), thanks to this nice Guide:
1 in the Desert, however this is quite a large detour.
1 in Petalburg City, requires Surf but is a small detour.
2 on Route 120, but one requires Cut, which is otherwise useless in a speedrun. The other requires only a small detour across the lake to the southwest, but it's a bit late to help with evolving Blaziken before Winona >_>
1 Hidden on Mt Pyre, very small detour after fighting one of the grunts, but again is too late for Blaziken.
...Aaaand that's it Undecided

Assuming Level 16 before the first gym, Combusken will usually evolve into Blaziken in the one required trainer fight in Mossdeep Gym (just in time too, that fight would be ridiculously hard without a Blaziken). After that... Kyogre can handle pretty much everything after you get it by itself, even other water types, with some Calm Mind/Speed boots (I know I said differently earlier, but in retrospect it's probably faster to just use the Big K, since this does save a bit of time not-getting Brick Break), only trouble is that Hydro Pump only has 5 PP, meaning a 1 or more PP ups may be needed (probably need at least 6 PP for Glacia and Steven).

how about a leppa berry instead?  Any of them around?

That could work Cheesy
