Quote from Lakey:
I'm sort of new to the idea of speedrunning and I really don't know if this would be of any use, but I wonder if Taunt might be useful in a Mudkip run, for the Liza and Tate fight? You'd be able to forbid Solrock from using Calm Mind or Lunatone from using anything but Psychic. If you wanted to run a Torrent sweep with Swampert you might not think this is very helpful, because then they can only attack you, but... I think that if you had a partner (preferably Sharpedo) with lower HP than Swampert they would focus all their attacks on just Sharpedo. Even Psychic. So if you can use Castform to set up rain you can go for a STAB Torrent Mystic Water-boosted (you don't need Quick Claw because a. Castform would to be able set up rain and b. speed isn't important when they're not attacking you) super-effective Water sweep in the rain. And if that's not enough to OHKO, if Sharpedo's still alive it can help too.

Solrock: Flamethrower, Psychic, Sunny Day, Solarbeam

Lunatone: Hypnosis, Calm Mind, Psychic, Light Screen
I meant Sunny Day, not Calm Mind. xD

As for accessibility, Sharpedo learns it naturally at level 38. I seem to recall something having been said about catching wild level 37 Sharpedo; you'd need one Rare Candy or a bit of experience put into Sharpedo. As for the TM, it's in the Trick House; too far out of the way for a speed run, but the fact that Sharpedo learns it naturally could be useful. Maybe.
There's a word for that
Highest level Sharpedo can be caught at (around Mossdeep) is Lv35, and at that level he outspeeds and does more than enough damage with Crunch. He's only needed for a run using Blaziken, as Swampert can manage them on his own with some strategy.

As for this:
Quote from Mouldy Cheese:
Dont know if anybody is interested but i came up with a strategy for beating liza and tate in a torchic run. This is for segmented as it would have no chance in a SS but this way you dont have to get the super rod and catch a sharpedo. After 3 bulk ups lunatone and solrock are OHKO's to double kick.

Something is still needed for Dive and Waterfall, but I guess this could allowing something quick to be caught rather than getting the Super Rod and fishing.

Mouldy Cheese: 2010-04-16 01:52:08 am
Yes i was thinking catching a tentacool on the way to mossdeep as they can learn both dive and waterfall.

Ive started uploading my run to Nate.

@ Ultimate Darius, are you talking SS or Segmented? if its segmented then id say try for something like this:

Turn 1: lunatone used hypnosis (wingull fell asleep), solrock used phychic (wingull fainted), hariyama used belly drum
Turn 2: abra used hyper potion on hariyama, pokes get attacked, lunatone dies via vital throw
Turn 3: castform used hyper potion on hariyama, solrock attacks, solrock dies via vital throw

or something along those lines.

EDIT: uploading complete
Wow, 1:54:21! And I was happy with my time of 2:20:14! I used only Swampert on my Ruby run and I consider myself a "semi-professional" speedrunner. I follow the path of a professional speed run, but I go through on my pace and the only games I have speedrunned (is that even right?!) are Pokémon games on emulators. On Platinum I have 4:09 with only Torterra, on Heart Gold 4:31 with only Feraligatr and I'm currently busy with a Leaf Green speed run with only Charizard. I'm thinking to post my runs on Youtube, but I haven't created an account yet. What should I do?
Joke of all trades
well, unfortunately we don't accept emulator runs on this site, as there is to much ability too tamper with them.  but puting them on youtube would allow people to see the stratergies used and apply them to a real run wich would be good.

I know that, I don't have a recording device to record my runs on a DS or GBA. That's why I did it on an emulator and it was just for fun (and a lot of frustrations).  I just went through the game like it was on a normal DS, without cheating, except the code you need for HG to work. I am not a pro speedrunner and not a complete amateur in terms of Pokémon. There are however some stupid mistakes I kept in just for the cause on not redoing that annoying segment again.

It will also be quite some work to upload to Youtube. Each run has about 24 segments and in Platinum and Diamond there are alot of them that are longer than 10 minutes. If I get more support I will consider it. I just joined today, so that could be difficult.

Edit: Sorry, I meant Heart Gold instead of Diamond.
It would be great to see your runs, so if you can, put them on youtube. I would really like to read about your sapphire run because you might have a few tricks that I overlooked in my run. Do you have a route guide you used? and what about a battle guide? if you could post those id be very interested to read them. Time to play borderlands Tongue soooo epic

Thanks. In fact, I did a run on Ruby. I used Ascetic Swordsman's incomplete Sapphire run as a guide, without the use of the legendary. This is a solo Swampert run. As I said before, I don't consider myself a professional speedrunner. I mostly didn't uses the Starter that is used the most, in this case Torterra and Charizard, the latter still in progress. For Ruby this was my fourth run. First I had a time of 2:56:XX, then 2:39:XX, later I had 2:28:04 and now I have 2:20:14. I think I have hit my limit however.

Wow, that's much better support than I imagined. Some of the biggest Pokémon speedrunners willing to see my runs. And I registered just yesterday. I feel a bit honored. Maby I can create a Youtube account and upload the Red battle as a preview for the HGSS topic.
Id be very interested to see your RED battle if you used feraligatr, I used mewtwo in my 1st playthrough. how did swampert handle victory road/e4? in ruby, in my run it took 23 minutes from standing infront of kyogre to beating steven :P. Ascetics run was with torchic, so i presume your refering to the route that u copied off him?
Funny that ruby was mentioned.  Way back before I recorded my segmented sapphire run I was working on a ruby test run using an older plan.  It was very close to the one used for the recorded run.  I never did finish it.  I'm saved in Ever Grande city, about to challenge the elite four with a time of 2:09.  I'll try finishing it and let everyone know how it goes.

Edit:  I'm fighting Drake now with a time of 2:19.  I lost some time by not having any x-attacks for the fights and going back to buy more would just cost time.  I also saved before each battle so that cost time too.  If I'm lucky enough to beat Drake and Steven I'd say my final time would be 2:25-2:30.  Not bad for an out of date plan.

It looks like teaching Groudon brick break wasn't worth it.  I can just use fire blast against Cacturne and Shiftry since they resist earthquake.  Two more for the Glalies and the last to deal with Steven's Skarmory.  I can keep bulk-up then.  I would need one for Phoebe, Glacia and Drake, as well as an x-speed for Drake.  I'm not sure about Steven, but I'd probably need one.

I was considering teaching strength over slash but the high critical hit rate might come in handy.  Slash after one attack boost should be a 2HKO on altaria and the flygons.  Not sure about Salamence.

I'll see if I can finish this in the morning.

Well, I saved before Wallace at 1:56. I fled from Groudon because I didn't need it. I also picked up Brick Break and then I went into the Gym. So I guess it would be about a good 26 minutes from fleeing from Groudon untill I defeated Steven.  And yes, I based this on the route of this run. It's not 100 % accurate of course, but it was my inspiration. Swampert was from L47 to just not 54 during the Elite-4 and I powered him up with X-Items. These are his IV: 5 for HP, 22 for Attack, 17 for Defense, a godly 31 for Special Attack (not kidding), 21 for Special Defense and 22 for Speed. His nature was Mild and has this moveset: Surf, Earthquake, Ice Beam and Brick Break. I'm most proud of defeating Phoebe in 1 try, because in previous run, she used to be so damn annoying with Curse.

Edit: And about Victory Road: 1 OHKO'd all regular trainers in there and used Flash to light up the cave. I could have used a X-Attack during the battle with Wally, but I wanted to save it for the Elite-4.
Wow max special attack nice. Thats a pretty good time with Swampert for VR/E4 i thought it would have taken longer than that. Im guessing you did it in quite a few segments though, my VR/E4 had 1 segment each :D.

There were 7 segments. 1 from Wallace to the end of Victory Road. 1 segment for Wally and segment for each Elite-4 member plus Steven because I didn't want to take risks. In total there were 24 segments. I was surprised by my final time too. I didn't think I could go from 2:28 to 2:20. But I won't run through Ruby anymore.

EDIT: You know what? I'll just create a Youtube account and I'll upload the Red battle this afternoon. Maby I'll start later with uploading my Ruby run. There are only 2 video's I need to split. I also used the VBA recording option so there will be audio delay later in the video. I still have the VMV files of the run. Maby I can re-record them with Hypercam 3 to get rid of the audio delay.

EDIT 2: Video is uploaded. Here is the link:. You can also find it in the HGSS topic.

I'm most interested in this LG/FR Charizard run.  Do you have or can you get AIM?
Yes add me on AIM aswell, I watched you RED battle and u started on level 72, when i got to red i was in my 60's, did u use heaps of candies or do extra battles?

Well I have runned LF before with a time of 2:29:58 in 22 segments, but my laptop crashed and the data couldn't be recovered. I'm aiming for a better time now.
I wasn't familiar with AIM, and I checked it out. I have never used any chatting program before in my entire life because I don't need it. I'd rather talk via this message board or PM's. Thanks for al the support anyways.

I have picked up 10 Rare Candies during my run. Some of them are hidden, 1 in Ecruteak City and 1 right before the Elite 4 for example. Again for that AIM thing. I really am not into those kind of things, so this message board is more than enough for me. I know I just joined and I would like that this convertation goes further in the HGSS run before I get warnings on my second day.

That's a non-download version of AIM.  The main reason I suggested it is because you can hash out a lot of information or strategy in a very short period of time.  If that's not your thing, that really kinda sucks because I'm very impatient waiting for PMs or forum responses!  I'm still willing to help out, of course, and so as to not derail from the actual point of this thread, I'll stop spamming it with unnecessary non-topic information as well.

That's OK and all. But remember I'm just do this for fun and I'm not 100 % serious about those speed runs. I wanted to show that everybody can have a fairly good time for them.

lol, that's a time I'll never even get close to.
Im currently looking at ways to improve my run and I think one of my biggest time wasters is the amount of segments ive done, if I can cut down on segments ill be able to save time, my question is how much time?
I asked Ultimate Darius and he estimated it at around 15 seconds of in-game time from when you select your game file to when the save completes, im wondering if the game counts the whole 15 second or if the ingame timer stops once you say 'yes' to saving the game. So basically if Ultimate Darius is correct for every 4 segments I cut down on I can potentially save 1 minute of time. However im wondering how accurate his estimation is, if it takes 15 seconds to save then ill go segment cutting crazy, but if its only say 3 seconds then i wont bother. I think a TASer might have the best answer.

Mouldy Out xxx
There's a word for that
I have no idea where Darius got that number, the amount of time it takes to make a 'normal' save (open menu, save right away, overwrite file) is about 8-9 seconds. Obviously time is saved over that whenever you have to do something else in the menu as well, like heal. Having said that it's still quicker to avoid segmenting wherever you can manage it, especially in areas with lots of travel and minimal battling (i.e. most of the game after Wattson >_>).
I think he took into account the time it takes as soon as you select your file (from the 'continue' and 'new game' menu) till the time it takes to load your game and then to save. But still 8-9 seconds thats still quite a bit, if i can manage to cut some more segments down i should be able to get close to sub 1:50 (my new goal). Im still surprised that you havent said that my <2:00 is cool though Tongue
