Pokémon Crystal (Any %) (Single Segment)

Verifier Responses

Quote:
First off, thanks to Flip for allowing me to verify another game. As for Pokémon Crystal, it starts off with the player setting the time on the game (about a few seconds wasted here, I don't see the purpose of it). Audio and video quality are just fine, I see no indication of cheating (yet).

New Bark Town: chose Totodile as her starting Pokémon. That would have been my choice as well as Totodile is the best out of Chikorita and Cyndaquil, IMO. On the way out, she receives a potion from Prof. Elm's aide.

Route 29: retrieved a berry from the tree.

Cherrygrove City: nothing to comment on.

Route 30: picked up a Potion nearby Mr. Pokémon's house.

Mr. Pokemon's House: received the Pokédex, spoke to Mr. Pokémon and Prof. Oak and let Totodile have some rest (not really needed, since she did not even attempt to fight wild Pokémon). Received a Mystery Egg before leaving.

Route 30: retrieved a berry from the tree and received a call from Prof. Elm about a dilemma he's in.

Cherrygrove City: once back here, player gets into a battle with some red-headed, snot-nosed punk. Battle goes smoothly. Totodile levels up to lvl. 6.

New Bark Town: player tells Prof. Elm the story about the Pokédex and the Mystery Egg. Upon leaving Prof. Elm's lab, player receives some Pokéballs.

Route 30: a boy comes up and asks how many Pokémon she had caught and offers to teach her how to catch them.

Cherrygrove City: nothing new to comment on.

Route 30: fought Youngster Mikey and leveled up to lvl. 7, learning Rage automatically. Some time later, Mom calls and asks her if she wants to save a portion of her battle money. Picks up a Potion from nearby the entrance to a cave. Picked up a Bitter Berry from a berry tree. Went into battle with a wild Poliwag and some time later caught it using a Pokéball.

Violet City: entered the Violet City Gym and fought Bird Keeper Abe. Battle starts out rocky with Spearow using Peck on Totodile, nearly causing it to faint had it not been for the Berry that Totodile was holding. Battle ended with Totodile leveling up to lvl. 8 and had 3 HP left out of 26. Player used a Potion to help Totodile out. Next battle was against Bird Keeper Rod. Same rocky start as with BK Abe. BK Rod had two Pidgeys, with the second of the two getting a 1HKO. Pidgey 1's battle ended with Totodile leveling up to lvl. 9. Next was Gym Leader Falkner. Battle start was much better than the first two. Totodile knocked Pidgey out within a few seconds and leveled up to lvl. 10. Pidgeotto (Falkner's other Pokémon) was a 2HKO. Battle ends with Totodile leveling up to lvl. 10 and the player winning TM31 (Mud-Slap), the ZephyrBadge and the ability to use Flash outside of battle. Has anyone noticed that the layout of the Gym looks like a dollar sign? After leaving the Violet City Gym, the player receives a call from Prof. Elm about the Mystery Egg. She goes to the Violet City Pokémon Center (under Prof. Elm's orders) and takes possession of the Egg after healing her own Pokémon. The Egg then somehow makes its way to the PC to be stored. Afterwards she retrieves a PrzcureBerry (Berry that cures Paralysis).

Route 32: picks up a Repel. Entered into a mandatory conversation with a guy who's supposedly selling Slowpoke Tails for $1,000,000 Pokédollars (Rip-Off!).

Union Cave: entered into a battle with a wild Sandshrew and after a few seconds captured it using a Pokéball. After the battle, player finds an X-Attack and uses the repel to ward off wild Pokémon (caves are notorious for half a million wild Pokémon battles). After sneaking past one potential Pokémon trainer, the player engages into a conversation with another Pokémon trainer, Firebreather Bill. After the battle with FB Bill's first Koffing, Totodile levels up to lvl 12. Afterward, the player picks up a Potion.

Route 33: nothing to comment on.

Azalea Town: Repel wears off. The player enters the house of Kurt, hearing the story about Team Rocket and it's history of causing chaos. After the story, Kurt runs off to Slowpoke Well, where they learn that the Slowpoke are getting their tails cut off (hence the massive overprice 10 minutes prior). Once leaving Kurt's house, the player enters the Pokémart and purchases one Super Potion, seven Repels and two Antidotes.

Slowpoke Well: engages into battle with Rocket Grunt 1 (who calls Kurt an old coot). Once again another rocky battle, with Totodile hanging on for dear life. After the battle, Totodile levels up to lvl 13, automatically learning Water Gun. Player uses the newly purchased Super Potion on Totodile. Next was Rocket Grunt 2. One of the best starts I have seen yet (although this may change throughout the game) as Totodile nearly knocks out Zubat while keeping all 37 HP. Totodile's luck runs out as he was poisoned by the next Pokémon in line, Ekans (how coincidental - Ekans is Snake spelled backwards). Battle ends with Totodile still poisoned, although the player uses an Antidote on it. Here comes Rocket Grunt 3. Totodile levels up to lvl 14 after RG 3's first Pokémon, Rattata. This RG 3 should not be confused with rookie phenom Robert Griffin III, just saying. Battle ended with no leveling up (surprising). Last was Rocket Grunt 4. Koffing gave Totodile a run for his money, nearly causing him to faint with only 5 HP left out of 39. At battle's end, Totodile leveled up to lvl 15. Shortly thereafter, Kurt talks to the player and goes back to his house.

Azalea Town: after leaving Kurt's house, the player enters the Azalea Town Gym. First battle is with Twins Amy and May (another coincidence - their names are very similar to each other). The battle with Spinarak went very smoothly, with Totodile not getting attacked at all. Battle concludes. Next up is Bug Catcher Al. After BC Al's first Pokémon, Caterpie, Totodile levels up to lvl 16. After this battle, the player sneaks past a potential Trainer and goes straight for Gym Leader Bugsy. After dealing with Pokémon #2 (Kakuna), Totodile levels up to lvl 17. Scyther, Bugsy's third Pokémon, seems to be a total pain in the butt leaving Totodile with 1 HP out of 46, but he fortunately makes it through, leveling up to lvl 18. Bugsy is defeated and comes with it are a variety of prizes: Totodile evolves into Croconaw, the player receives the HiveBadge, the ability to use Cut outside of battle and TM49 (Fury Cutter). After leaving the Azalea Town Gym, the player enters the PokéCenter and heals the party. The player gives Croconaw the PrzcureBerry to hold and teaches it Fury Cutter, all the while forfeiting Scratch. Next is the battle with the red-headed, snot-nosed punk again. It's main Pokémon, Chikorita, had already evolved into Bayleef. The battle with the snot-nosed punk went more smoothly than I thought. After the battle, Croconaw levels up to lvl 19. He mentions after the battle that he hates the weak - Pokémon, trainers, etc. even though he's a weakling himself.

Ilex Forest: upon entering, the player uses a Repel. This level is pretty much just trying to rescue the lost Farfetch'd and return it to its owner. The player finds a Revive. After a few minutes, the Repel wears off and the player uses another one. After returning the lost Farfetch'd, the owner gives the player HM01 (Cut) as thanks for the return of Farfetch'd. The player teaches Cut to Sandshrew (known as A on the game). The player finds an X-Attack. A few minutes later, the Repel wears off again and another one is used. Shortly thereafter, the player talks to a guy with green hair and receives TM02 (Headbutt). Player then finds an Ether.

Route 34: once entering Route 34, the player walks into the grass to avoid the trainer battles and subsequently the Repel wears off.

Goldenrod City: shortly after arriving in Goldenrod City, the player goes to a bike shop and borrows a bicycle from a guy who has pretty much no customers at all. Player teaches Croconaw the Headbutt move, forfeiting Fury Cutter and registers the bicycle onto the Select button for quick access.

Route 35: player tries to sneak past a potential trainer but misses and gets caught. Player now has to fight Camper Ivan. Fight goes smoothly. Player then sneaks past not one but two potential trainers at the same time. Player then uses a Repel. Player rides bike and goes into battle with Bug Catcher Arnie (battle can't be avoided). Croconaw levels up to lvl 20.

Route 36: player talks to Floria of the Flower Shop, saying how the Pokémon stuck in the roadway wiggles when water is added.

Route 35: snuck past not one but three trainers (although the last one avoided had already been battled).

Goldenrod City: player enters the Goldenrod City Gym and battles Lass Carrie (can't be avoided). Before taking on Gym Leader Whitney, the player switches Croconaw's PrzcureBerry with a regular Berry and uses a Super Potion on him. Whitney's Miltank seems to be kicking butt here. Croconaw levels up to lvl 21 and tries to learn Bite but has to forfeit Leer. Whitney is defeated and the player wins the PlainBadge, the ability to use Strength outside of battle and TM45 (Attract). After Whitney's battle, the player goes to the Flower Shop next door and receives the Squirtbottle. Player stops at the Pokémart and sells the Revive, Ether and the two remaining Pokéballs as well as TM31 (Mud-Slap) and TM 45 (Attract). Player then buys TM33 (Ice Punch), six X-Specials, two X-Speeds, seven X-Attacks, six Escape Ropes and one PokéDoll then leaves. Next stop is the PokéCenter nearby to heal the party. On the way to Route 35, the player receives an errand to deliver a Pokémon with mail to a friend on Route 31.

Route 35: player sneaks past the two trainers undetected (again) and uses a Repel. Player uses the Squirtbottle on the mysterious Pokémon blocking the road, which turns out to be a wild Sudowoodo. Player flees.

Route 37: player slips past a potential trainer undetected.

Ecruteak City: Repel's effects wear off. Player enters the Kimono House and engages battle with Kimono Girl Naoko. Battle ends, next up is Kimono Girl Sayo. Battle ends and Croconaw levels up to lvl 22. Next up is Kimono Girl Zuki. Battle ends, Croconaw levels up to lvl 23. Next up is Kimono Girl Kuni. Battle ends. Next up is Kimono Girl Miki. Jolteon kicks butt here, Croconaw levels up to lvl 24. Battle ends. Player talks to a spectator and gives the player HM03 (Surf). Player leaves and enters the PokéMart and buys six Super Potions, three Parlyz Heal and two Awakenings. Player uses Repel and uses both Potion and Super Potion on Croconaw. Player teaches TM33 (Ice Punch) to Croconaw and forfeits Rage. Player teaches HM03 (Surf) to Croconaw as well, forfeiting Water Gun. Player enters the Burned Tower (Home of the legendary trio Entei, Raikou and Suicune) and meets with Eusine who is on the trail of Suicune. After a short time, the player meets up with the red-headed, snot-nosed punk and engages into battle. Player uses X-Special at the battle's beginning. Croconaw levels up to lvl 25 after fighting Bayleef. Battle ends. After the battle, a small earthquake shakes the Burned Tower and makes a trap door appear, making the player fall into the room that houses the legendary trio. After some time, the legendary trio run away into different directions. Player uses an Escape Rope. Repel's effect wore off. Player now enters the Ecruteak City Gym and battles Sage Ping. After battling four out of Sage Ping's five Pokémon, Croconaw levels up to lvl 26. They were all knocked out by 1HKOs. Battle ends. Player moves a certain way to keep from both being caught by another trainer and keep from being transported to the front of the Gym due to the layout of the floors. One wrong move and you're at the beginning. Next up is Sage Jeffrey. Battle ends with no problems. Player meets with one more trainer before the Gym Leader. Next battle is against Medium Martha. After Medium Martha's second Pokémon, Croconaw levels up to lvl 27. Battle ends. Player uses both a Repel and a Super Potion on Croconaw. Last up is Gym Leader Morty. Player uses an X-Speed and an X-Special. Gastly's Lick move causes Croconaw to become paralyzed. No problem due to the PrzcureBerry that Croconaw was holding. After Gengar, Croconaw levels up to lvl 28 and tries to learn Scary Face but forfeits it. Battle ends and the player receives the FogBadge as well as the ability to use surf outside of battle and TM30 (Shadow Ball).

Route 38: sneaks past one trainer with success, tries to do the same for the other trainer but either got caught or it was intentional. Battles Lass Dana. After battle, sneaks past trainer number 3.

Route 39: tries to sneak past a trainer but was not fast enough. Battles PokéFan Ruth. Battle ends with Croconaw nearly leveling up. Repel wears off. Slips past a trainer.

Olivine City: meets with the red-headed, snot-nosed punk for either the third or fourth time, I lost count. Talks about how weak the Gym trainers and the Gym Leader are, advises to train at the Olivine Lighthouse. Player enters the PokéMart and buys fifteen Super Repels. Player enters the PokéCenter and heals the party.

Olivine Lighthouse: player intentionally engages battle with Gentleman Alfred (battle can't be avoided). Battle ends and Croconaw levels up to lvl 29. Player engages into another battle with Gentleman Preston (battle can't be avoided). Battle ends. Another intentional battle with Lass Connie. Battle ends. Player falls through a trap door and retrieves an Ether. Player sneaks past a trainer and enters the room where Jasmine is. Jasmine asks a favor of getting some medicine from Cianwood City. Player leaves the room and finds a Rare Candy. To save time, the player uses an Escape Rope.

Olivine City: player goes to a house in which a guy gives her HM04 (Strength). Player uses a Super Repel, gives the Rare Candy to Croconaw to make him level up to lvl 30 and makes him evolve into Feraligatr, and teaches HM04 (Strength) to Sandshrew.

Route 40: nothing to comment on.

Route 41: player sneaks past a trainer in the water.

Cianwood City: player enters the Cianwood City Gym and has to battle several trainers. First is Blackbelt Yoshi. Battle ends. Has anyone ever noticed that the two fighting-type Pokémon, Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee are named after Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee? Next is Blackbelt Lao. Battle ends. Next is Blackbelt Nob. Battle ends with Feraligatr leveling up to lvl 31. Player has to move the boulders a certain way. Next is Blackbelt Lung. Battle ends. Player uses a Super Potion on Feraligatr before battling Gym Leader Chuck (how convenient, he chucks boulders around). Player uses two X-Attacks. Battle ends with Feraligatr leveling up to lvl 32, player winning the StormBadge, the ability to use Fly outside of battle and TM01 (DynamicPunch). Player leaves the Gym and talks to a guy who gives her HM02 (Fly). Repel's effect wears off. Player enters a house and talks to a guy who gives her SecretPotion for the sick Pokémon in Olivine City. Player teaches HM02 (Fly) to Kenya (the Pokémon a friend was supposed to get on Route 31). Player flies to Ecruteak City.

After setting foot on dry land, the player talks to Lance and wants the player to help investigate the Gyarados issues. Player flies to Mahogany Town.

Mahogany Town: player enters a house and Lance says that there's a strange radio signal coming from a hidden set of stairs. Player battles Rocket Grunt 1. Battle ends. Without even moving, here comes Rocket Grunt 2. Battle ends. Repel wears off. Player engages battle with Scientist Jed (battle can't be avoided). After fighting the second Magnemite, Feraligatr levels up to lvl 33. Battle ends. Player hits a secret switch on the computer and retrieves a Guard Spec. Evidently, the hidden switch turns off the Intruder Panels. Player meets up with Lance and gives the Pokémon some of his medicine to heal them. Player engages battle with Rocket Grunt 3 (can't be avoided). Battle ends. Player meets up with Lance and he tells her that two Passwords are required for further entry and that only a select few Rocket Grunts know the Password. Next is Rocket Grunt 4. Battle ends. RG 4 says that one of the Passwords is Slowpoketail. Player tries to sneak past Rocket Grunt 5 but gets caught in the process. I think it was intentional because he mentions something about a Password. Battle ends. RG 5 says he "thinks" the Password is Raticate Tail. Player sneaks past a Rocket Grunt. Player meets up with the red-headed, snot-nosed punk again saying how he was no match for Lance's Pokémon. Surprisingly, there's no battle involved with the player. Player enters the two Passwords and gets confronted by Rocket Executive, engaging battle. After Raticate, Feraligatr leveled up to lvl 34. Battle ends. Player talks to the Rocket Executive's Murkrow who says that the next Password is Hail Giovanni. Player tries to sneak past a Rocket Grunt and gets caught this time. Next battle is against Rocket Grunt 6. Battle ends. Player picks up a Full Heal. Player enters Password 3. Shortly after entering the last room, the player is confronted by two Rocket Executives, who are also confronted by Lance. Lance battles one while the player battles the other. There's a coincidence - Arbok's name is Kobra spelled backwards with a K. Battle ends. Lance says that the big machine nearby is what is causing the radio signals and they have no choice but to make the Electrodes faint. After Electrode battle 1, Feraligatr levels up to lvl 35. Afterwards, the player meets up with Lance, who says that the radio signal has stopped and gives the player HM06 (Whirlpool). Player uses an Escape Rope. Player battles Pokémon Trainer Red, the last trainer on the game. Player uses two X-Attacks when fighting Venusaur. Battle ends with Feraligatr leveling up to lvl 63. Red disappears. Cue credits.

Ending: the runner has caught 6 Pokémon, obtained all 16 Badges (8 from Johto, 8 from Kanto), and had an end time of 3 Hours, 24 Minutes. To the runner: I have never seen such great gameplay, ever. You are one heck of a runner.

Verdict: I Accept.

A/V is fine. No cheating.

Got past Russell, accept.

Seriously, this run is fab. As always, werster has taken a hell of a lot of time to meticulously plan the best route and on top of that, the luck in this run is insane. Flinches everywhere. Freezing Venusaur first time. This one will not be beaten in a long long while if at all. Oh, and timing is 3:24 as stated by the runner.

Really great run, featuring overall better-than-average luck and a perfect ending, planned down to the finest details. Improves on the current run by almost half an hour; accept.

The verification file actually came with the audio commentary this time, so I opted to listen to that instead of watching the video at double speed, hence why this took a while. To perhaps clear up the confusion regarding Fury Cutter's damage: There is a +2 to total damage added at the end of the damage formula, independently of the calculation involving base power. Moreover, in gen 2 at least, Reflect/Light Screen and criticals are applied before this addition, while STAB and type modifiers are applied after. This means that a STAB SE Fury Cutter should gain +6 per hit even through Bayleef's Reflect, which can (and does) make a huge difference at low levels.

Decision: Accept

Congratulations to Mark 'werster' McKenzie!
Thread title:
I haven't read all of it, but this part of it is wrong: "Route 35: player tries to sneak past a potential trainer but misses and gets caught. Player now has to fight Camper Ivan. Fight goes smoothly. Player then sneaks past not one but two potential trainers at the same time. Player then uses a Repel. Player rides bike and goes into battle with Bug Catcher Arnie (battle can't be avoided). Croconaw levels up to lvl 20." - You can actually avoid the battle by going through national forest, but it's faster to fight the trainer anyway.
