Alright I'd thought I'd start a thread for this game, because I am considering on running it and was gathering some information about it. So I figured I'd just make a thread for it.

Also to see how much interest in this game is.
And of course for people to possible help me find stuff out. It seems the information on this game is limited.
This is what I've found so far:
There are 2 (rejected) TAS runs on Tasvideos.org, both suck heavily and aren't even worth watching (I watched the fastest one to the end, nothing special seen or done. The slower one is just completely retarded so I stopped watching during the 2nd level, maybe he does something special at the end, I don't know I just couldn't stand watching it ;p).

Also, the FAQ's on gamefaq do not seem to help. (Haven't read them completely, but what I read was not useful to me, so stopped reading)

I haven't looked on nicovideo, because I am too stupid to figure that site out. (and I do not have an account)

Moving on to the game itself.
This game is ideal for 2 players, sadly I have no friends so I'm going to try and tackle this solo. You can choose from pocky or rocky, the only difference is visual. (in case I'm wrong, please do correct me).

You can do a normal attack (magic cards) (have no idea why you would ever use this)
You got the 'auto' normal attack which is the normal attack only with a turbo button. (even in a TAS this is faster or equally fast then spamming normal attack)

You have 2 kinds of weapon upgrades, Stronger cards/leaves (blue orbs) or fire (red orbs). As far as I can tell when focussed they are both equally strong, however, at the moment I prefer using fire because it splits up to the side (90 degree angle) when you hit something with it and it's easier to focus it on someone. (it has 2 fireballs next to each other and goes in a straight line)
Cards/leaves have a more spread out shot though, so could be more useful against hordes of enemies.
If you have a fully powered fire attack and pick up a blue orb you switch to the cards/leaves and lose 1 power up level. So you need another blue orb to get it to full strength and vice versa.

You can do a 'whip attack' called magic stick ingame. This attack is really useful. It reflects or stops projectiles that are flying towards you. It also does damage to enemies, but that's not it's primary purpose. Unfortunately you cannot do this skill while moving, so when you do it your character will come to a complete standstill, which costs time.

You also have a slide move that, as far as I know, is only good for dodging things. This is however a faster way of moving then the normal walking, so should be used in speedruns. The downside is that you cannot change from direction or stop prematurely when deciding to slide so you can't spam this like a madman because you would run into all enemies. The trick here would be to find out where to use it.

And last but not least you got a bomb/special move. You need to try to get as much of these as possible because they can reduce boss fights times by A LOT. Unfortunately there aren't that much bombs out there. I am still trying to find out at which bosses it would be most time saving to use them.

The most crucial thing is this game is that most of the time sliding/getting hit is probably the fastest, however if you get hit 3 times you lose a weapon upgrade. Which I think should be avoided at all costs. Also, on hard you're probably already close to dead when you get this 5 times or so.

As far as I know this game doesn't have that many random factors in them, but a few are crucial. Because in the first level you can attack a frog and then someone on a cloud appears, sometimes it drops useful stuff other times it doesn't. (it's also a different character appearing on the clouds then) As far as I could tell it had to do with how fast you got there and maybe what weapon upgrades you have. Also the bosses sometimes act differently.

That's all the info I am sharing atm (read: I have to go do stuff), I'm mostly interested in knowing how many people would like to see a run of this game.

They are two differences, from what I remember.  Pocky's bomb shoot in the four main directions and do a lot of damage, but Rocky's bombs create an expanding circle of leaves.  Although it clears out enemies, it doesn't do much damage to bosses.  I know the dashes are different between the two, but I don't remember which one has which dash.  One has a shorter, quicker dash, and the other has a longer, slower dash.  I might just be misremembering that last bit, but I think it's true.  IIRC, Pocky has a faster dash.

That random floating guy is in every stage.  I'd have to recheck my notes for his locations in the other ones, but in level 2 he is on one of the rafts floating by during the raft sequence, and during level....5 (I think?), he is in a boiler around halfway through the stage.  I don't think it's really profitable to even make him appear, since you'll have completely upgraded weapons by the end of level 1 I'm sure, and losing it would probably mean a reset.  The only "powerups" worth collecting after you already have max fireball power would be bombs and the invincibility/shield item.

After you learn the enemy patterns, it is rather easy to get through without getting hit.  I did a high score run of this game awhile ago, and after just a few days of practice I was able to beat most of the game without being hit.  With more practice, you can probably do even better.  I always favored the fire weapon because it will often hit bosses that have shields or other protection that the cards/leaves cannot get through.  See: the knight boss in the final level.  The cards don't damage him when they hit his shield, but the fireball will explode off the shield and pierce through.  It'll probably also be useful on the bat boss, since the split fire can hurt the tiny bats while you focus on the main one.

I've only played this game for score, though; I've never tried to play for speed so it might be significantly harder.  Though I was still rushing to the best point pressing spots in each level, I certainly wasn't spamming dash the entire time (which is probably necessary in a speed run).  I'm very interested in following your progress!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Rocky can turn to stone like Racoon mario, I don't remember exactly waht can Pocky do if she can. In 2 player, you can push your partner by dashing, it does damage to enemies. There was an SDA tourney that played this game, you can get data from there, they may even have posted videos.
i would love to see a run of this game. unfortunately imno good at speedurnning so i cant help much but just countme as a vote for you to do it.

Pocky just spins around in a circle with her wand/whatever out, and you can move her during it.  This attack has the same property as the wand waving attack does uncharged: minimal damage to enemies and reflection of projectiles.

Well I've been testing a bit and as far as I can tell the dashes look the same, also Rocky's bomb (the leaves spreading out) is definitely stronger if you position yourself correctly Unless I'm missing some secret positioning for Pocky's bomb, but as far as I know it always does the same amount of damage. And of course Pocky's charging skill is more useful although I'm not sure where you would be able to use that properly because it does take a pretty long time for it to charge in which you can't shoot nor dash.

Also thanks for the tourney tip, although unfortunately there are no videos of it. Groobo did post a replay, but it desyncs.
And before I forget, if I'd run this game it'll be on hard and deathless.
The thing is though that groobo decided not to go for powerups and more for dmg taking although I'm afraid on hard that would translate to death.
Of course I'll be testing it out and if it turns out more sliding/taking dmg and no upgrades is faster it'll be the way to go.

The main thing I want to know now is when what spirits pop up. Because I need those with bombs. (even though the waiting for a bomb can take 5 seconds using it on the proper bosses saves (easily) up to 10 seconds.

[edit] typo's and... I've been experimenting with the first spirit. And for some reason it seems it's already been decided before you can even move what spirit pops up. I started 4 different games both used save state in beginning of level before I could move and I keep getting the same spirit per save state (I do get different spirits for the different save states). No matter how I try to play the level the spirit of save state 1 will always be the same.
I always picked hard difficulty and Rocky after each reset. (and in case you didn't know yet, the same spirit always drops the same)
1st time was the fat dude (drops bomb)
2nd time the lady with instrument (drops bomb)
3rd time the lady with instrument
4th time dude with long head (doesn't drop bomb)
5th time dude in harness (doesn't drop bomb)
6th time the lady with instrument
7th time... This time I save stated in the menu first I got a dude with hammer in hand 2nd time I got the lady. So I guess it isn't decided in the menu yet...

I save stated every time after the intro's when you first enter the stage. Not sure what I can do with this information though...

[edit2] after some more testing it seems it is decided after the intro cut scenes. (if you do not skip them at all you always seem to get the long headed guy) I made a save state right before skipping the cut scenes, which kept giving a different spirit and one right after it.  (when you go to the 'level select' screen.) The one right after skipping the cut scene kept giving the same spirit while the one before cutting the cut scene kept giving different spirits.
When I try to skip it as fast as possible I keep getting a different spirit so I think it must be some sort of counter that changes per frame or something. So doesn't look like I can do much with that right now.
I found a speedrun on nicovideos for P&R a while ago - http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1699832 . Like most speedruns on nicovideos, this one is pretty amazing. It's a run with Pocky and in the same category as you're aiming for (hard, deathless, probably no hits but I don't remember). It's hilarious how the player doesn't skip the cutscenes. A sign of either an infinite amount of patience or a pretty decent amount of skill to produce a high quality run under those conditions... You probably need an account to watch. There is a good description on how to sign up in the nicovideo thread elsewhere on this forum (definitely worth it).

I played through this game once and really liked it. Defintitely one of better games for the snes and fit for speedrunning afaict. I don't have much else to add but a "good luck" though...
Thanks for the tip!
It seems he is indeed going for no hits and not so much for speed.
Also what's interesting is that he starts with 1 bomb while us version starts with 0 on hard.
Some things he does might be useful, but the majority I'd probably have to do differently.
I'm also still convinced that going for highest power up (to defeat the bosses quicker) is better then trying to rush through everything with minimal damage attack.

I'm trying to find more places where spirits might pop up or where bombs may lay, but these seem to be the only ones I can figure out.

The 5 spirit locations (these are the only ones I know of)

(picutre stole from groobo)
There is also one when you kill the dude on the raft in level 2. (the one that throws bombs)
And then you have one bomb in a basket in level 1, one in level 2, one on the flying ship and one in the last level (they are not that difficult to find) Like I said these are the only ones I can find so far, no Idea if there are more.

With my current tactics I need to use 6 bombs, so 2 spirits need to drop a bomb.
1 bomb for the genie mid boss (almost insta kill), 1 for the flying skeleton endboss (insta kill), 1 for the flying bird boss (insta kill), 1 for dracula (takes care of phase 1, which is extremely difficult imho), 1 for the paladin boss near (makes him die a lot faster) the end and 2 for the final boss (1 in the beginning and 1 timed right when he throws his towels at you).

I'm not 100% sure if these are the best uses for bombs, but it seems to be. Mostly because those bosses can be horrendously annoying and thus you can lose a lot of time with them.

I also seem to have a pretty descent strat for every boss and mini boss now.

One more thing is that at a certain point in the game, with my current strat, you are can have a situation where you actually already got 4 bombs and a spirit drops a 5th. (this would only happen if 3 of the 4 spirits drops bombs, which is pretty low chance I think. So if that would happen it would suck big time because then you could have used a bomb more. However guessing a spirit might drop a bomb or not is just insane work (read: sick luck manipulation).

So yeah, I still only have massive problems with the castle level. Because you can't really seem to go fast threw that level without dying.

I might make a tas of this game (not fully optimised, just to show possible route/tactics). We'll have to see.
Seems like there isn't much info on the web about this game :P.

Anyway I'm having major problems with finding a good 'tactic' to rush through level 5 (the castle).

If I try to rush it I just keep dying. I also discovered that the times given in that marathon (around 21:20) are from normal difficulty. So if I'd even come close to that time I think you got a extremely solid speedrun. As said my main problem now lies with level 5.

Here's a video of my trying to get through it (I used lots of save states :P). I actually also glitched 1 ball somehow and didnt get hurt by it, but I this can be considered a freak accident and not something done in a normal speedrun. I also added the rest of the game and my boss fights including a nice little trick I found for the endboss.
