After watching another run of this game on Archive.org, I realised that I missed two shortcuts, and can probably take out the 2nd and 4th boss faster with the shotgun. If I redo this I might be able to shave off around 1-3 minutes. I was wondering if I should go for this or try for a sub-40 minute run using extra new game (I'll be able to skip 2 scenes, that add up to around 4-5 minutes). Or should I leave my 45:49 time as is?

Honest opinion.

Play on Normal action/Hard riddle.  The bosses on easy mode hardly even fight back.  Do not use a Extra New Game save as cutting out 2 scenes of the game is essentially not playing the whole game.

Originally I had planned on working on this run and then go to SH4 to round out the series but after doing 1 and 2 I just got tired of it (I can't stand the quality of the runs...too damn dark and there's nothing I can really do about it).

Anyways good luck to you.

I was originally practicing normal, but Radix suggested I do easy/easy and go for pure time (yeah...easy is TOO easy). As for the two scenes, the first scene is basically a tutorial (that you can skip on normal anyways) and the second is the borley haunted mansion, which basically means I don't have to listen to his yammering. As for normal, I would have done it instead, but I don't think she runs as fast or has as much stamina, I couldn't get lower then 50M on normal, But maybe that's just me. Thanks for your opinion though.

Don't listen to Radix's opinion on games he's never played.:-p  There's really nothing to an easy run on this particular title.

I know that the beginning scene in the game is essentially a tutorial, the same thing could be said for silent hill 1's first scene.  Playing on a next fear mode lets you skip these scenes but it's just my opinion that they should be left in.  In the end you can do what you want.

You definitely should be able to get under 50 minutes on normal mode.  I can't say for sure how fast the game can be completed in as I haven't put the time and effort into this title but under 50 should be easily accomplished.
Visit my profile to see my runs!
Well, a next fear run would count as a separate category, anyway.  Were you to attempt such, the result would not replace your current run but would join it somewhere on the Silent Hill 3 information page.

If your only interest is to substitute your current record for another, then repeat your procedures; except, of course, upgrade to a more challenging difficulty.

Good luck, either way.  Wink

Who knows? maybe I'll end up doing both, I'm kinda interested to see if I can get a time under 40 with extra new game, and I would also like to bump up the diff on the new game to normal (easy is PATHETICALLY easy, I stood in a group of numb bodys and let them kill me...I think it took about 4 minutes). anyways thanks for the advice guys, I'll start working on it when I get some free time.
I would like to see a fastest possible run time, with new fear mode eventually but i think that if you can improve your time from the original run, you should do it before attempting anything else.

By the by, about time someone got around to silent hill 3. Ive been waiting for a while. Good job. Now do 4, lol.

alright sounds good, I think if I get as lucky as I did on the current run, use the two shortcuts I didn't know about earlier, and suck it up and use guns on the 2nd and 4th boss, I might be able to go sub 42 Minutes

the way I see it, the first shortcut could save about 1 minute, the other one could save around 30 seconds to 1 minute. And as for the boss fights I could probably save around a minute or two using a shotgun on the Mercinary and Alessa (since they can't block anyways).

Maybe if I find time I can record and send Nate a tape in before the May 1st deadline...

I currently have plans on working on a Silent Hill 3 run on normal action/hard riddle (New game not next fear mode).

I've only just begun working on it and it's far too soon to make any other statements on it.

Actually, maybe you should just do hard mode, it's not all that different, just God takes forever to kill >.< (Plus it would be easier for radix to consider posting)

plus that way I could still have my easy skill run and you could still own the record on all the Silent Hill games on SDA Tongue

On another note, probably won't have time to do another easy/easy run on SH3 just yet (college homework:() but I think if I get really lucky I might try for sub 40

Good luck to you duke Wink

I speedrun games on Normal for a reason.

When I do a speedrun i like to use default settings for a particular game.  This means I dont like to use special weapons or items or use any tactics that cut off parts of a game (like using next fear mode).  Normal mode is my difficulty of choice because it represents the way a game is meant to be played.  Easy mode is for newcomers to a game or series and hard mode is for veterans looking for a challenge; that's why i view Easy mode speedruns as useless and hard mode speedruns as more of a specialty run rather than a pure speedrun.

I don't think that just a Hard mode run for Silent Hill really belongs anywhere.  I think that only 2 categories should be tracked for ANY silent hill game; the first being Normal action with any riddle level and the 2nd is a 10 star rank speedrun.  I personally wouldn't bother with any variations on this.

I know that Radix prefers all games to be tracked on either easy or hard but I disagree with that philosophy for reasons stated above; it essentially eliminates the only option that a game is created to be played on.

Silent Hill 3 will be a Normal action/Hard riddle run and after that I'll move onto Silent Hill 4 (hopefully I'll have a DVD recorder for both of these to improve quality...I'm hoping the games won't be too dark then).  After that i may go back and improve my Sh1 and 2 times (if only to have a DVD recorded run to improve quality) and I MIGHT do a SH1 10 star rank speedrun (I'm curious to see if I can do it in under a hour).

After that SH5 should be out.

In any event I do intend to completely dominate this series.

Yeah, I think I might give up trying to improve my previous. Other then the targeting glitch (which only effects easy mode for whatever reason). i think the timer is F ing up now too. I tried a practice run this morning while using the shortcuts and using a shotgun against the Merc and Alessa, and got a result of 45:28...which I would consider 'god awful' considering my alessa time was about a minute faster and the shortcuts obviously shave off alot of time as well.

Anyways, can't wait to see how you beat Leonard and Alessa quickly...

You can't compare easy mode and normal mode boss fights; in normal mode missionary and Alessa block frontal attacks.

Also you cannot judge your boss fight times based on what the game says it is at the end screen.  The boss fights that the game times for you exclude time spent in your inventory.  Therefor if you reload your weapon in the inventory screen and/or heal in the inventory screen the final counter saying you beat the boss in X amount of time will exclude that time yet the final game counter for total time includes it.

If you want to work on your boss fights you need to manually time yourself beating them otherwise you wont be able to tell how well you're doing.

yeah, I ment normal mode on those, they block and it's hard to break it (I havent gotten a good time ranking for the alessa battle on Normal because of it) that and leonard swims, which is equally as iritating.

As for the boss fights I know I did those alot faster then my previous attempt since it takes around 6 seconds to kill one of Alessa's forms on easy with the shotgun, and about 15 or so with the katana. but yeah, I agree that the timings on the boss fights are useless, theres no way the splitworm takes almost half a minute.

I just finished my first multi-segment practice run with this game (I use multi-segment runs in order to familiarize myself with a game before I start to seriously speedrun it) on Normal Action/Hard Riddle.  The final boss time stats were:

Split Worm - 1 min 8 sec
Missionary - 29 S
Leonard - 1 min 21 sec
Memory of Alessa - 1 min 19 sec
The God - 1 min 18 sec.

Again these do not reflect time added to the final game counter by boss fights (they exclude all time spent in the inventory screen during the fight).

EDIT - I've been meaning to ask - you said you saw 2 shortcuts that would help your time...what are those shortcuts and what the heck were you doing before?
i wish you wouldn't skip the cutscenes.

1. After you crack the walnut to get the moonstone, in the speedrun I ran all the way back, going through 3 small rooms and a very long hallway, when I could have turned right and skipped them all together.

2. when you go through the hell version of the hospital (atleast that's what I like to call it) when I go to collect the blood I went forward from the elevador into a room with a black object hanging from the ceiling (sorry that my description sucks) when I could have turned right unlocking a door that's close to the room with the blood, not the biggest shortcut in the world, but in a speedrun it matters.

truthfully...I wish I didn't have to either, the game has a great storyline, but unfortunently it's the rules, you'll have to talk to Radix about that.

1) yikes that was dumb on your part.:-p

2) On normal mode those darn slurpers like to knock you down when you go there.  If you get knocked down once it'll end up costing you time in the end (remember SH3 doesn't count loading times into the final time calculations).

After watching "nukesgoboom's" run on archive.org, and seeing the shortcuts, you can imagine how dumb I felt Tongue

are you talking about the hallways outside the room with the blood, or the hallway with the two slurpers and nurse? I hate both >.<

Only thing I don't like about the second shortcut is for a a second your wondering "where the **** am I?!" (since everything in that room is red anyways) makes it hard to find the room with the blood since the door blends in really well with the wall, and the slurper doesn't make things easier.

I'm talking about the hallway outside the room with blood; there's a couple of slupers there and when you take the shortcut to get to the room with blood if you go back the same way the slurpers are right on your case (they seem to hang around the area of the room you exited from).  However if you go the long way on your return trip it's an easy escape to the elevator.  Getting hit by 1 slurper hear will eliminate any time you save by taking the shortcut.

It's early to say but I'm expecting a Single segment SH3 normal/hard run (new game not next fear) to be done in around 47 minutes or so.
Fight, Crocogator, for everlasting peace!
Heyyy, I know what'll be fun! Let's plan a strategy for a no-deaths Extreme X run! It'll be super fun a--*shot repeatedly*

I don't see how a no death run would be good...a no damage run would be.

Anyways I've already lost motivation to play this game...it just...boring.

What's boring about spending 97% of the game running? I can safely say that I will never forget what Heather's back looks like.

I suck at Extreme mode, I could only do it segmented, even that would be a stretch (Alessa W/ submachine gun + Extreme Mode + no more healing items = >:()
