Hi everyone,
I follow SDA for a while now, but neved contributed to the forum.

I do play a lot of games, for example I played Tales of vesperia in a single segment and finished 23 mn later of the run published on SDA (multiple segments). But I know I can beat the multi-segment time in single segment (but won't do it).

When I was little I had a super nintendo, my brothers had a sega genesis, and even if we fought to proove that our console was the best, there is one game that I really loved on genesis and it was Landstalker.
I never saw any speedrun of this game, and as I like challenge, I am planning to do it myself. This game must have a speedrun !
I know it's going to be difficult, but I'm really going to  make it.

So if you want to give some advices, tricks etc... or even challenge me on this, I'll take it Smiley

PS: sorry for my english, I am french.

Since I closed my twitch I'll reupload what I have, I'm not picking it up so feel free to run with it.

This video probably won't be finished uploading until at least 8AM Eastern. I probably won't be around to make the post when it finishes uploading so I'm just gonna link and warn that if you come too soon the link will be a dud
Hello Supchi31,

did u manage to do a speedrun on Landstalker? I'm allready running it and can give u much advices.

I'd be interested in this. I've beaten the game several times for genesis. It's one of my favorites. I think the trick is going to be figuring out how much you can skip. A 100% run would be interesting as well, because you can skip a lot of upgrades. I don't even have any clue what a final time would look like.
Go play spacechem !
hi,
is any of you this guy ? : http://www.youtube.com/user/ccpato/videos

Also according to his videos there is a big difference between the european/us and Japanese version of the game. The japanese one as a lot of skips fixed in the other versions.

That Is kannonKassen of twitch zoonel i usualy catch him running English 100%, You can Skip quite a lot actually the major categories are any% which takes a lot of luck and statueless which uses different skips and shows more of the Game, 100% i dont quite know the definition for but kannon does. One of the major differences is in the jap version u can damage phase thru statues locked doors and cutable trees. a any% good final time would be 1:24 current 1:44 and the statueless is around 1:55  in us its done in around 2:30.  http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXO-P88MwHMwIxVE47zxq3g has a show of some of the newer skips and some older ones maanitou has been pretty good in finding skips along with me.
The 100% as I run it :

- All Equipements (find 16 items, for a total of 20)
- All Life Stocks (chests + shops), except the one you can buy in Kazalt.
- All Key Items (used or unused, for example no need to get the 2nd Garlic in the Nole Labyrinth). It includes the Casino pass, the reward from the old fighter quest in mercator (who is a dirty cheater btw) and the 4 items in the general shop.
- All Teleportation Trees (The Big One + 10 trees)

In my opinion, 100% of visited rooms (true 100% showed by the Oracle Stone) is pointless for speedrunning.

100% on JP version is about 3h30, but I missed a lot of the recent skips.

I'm curious to know if anybody has ever speedrun this game and if so are there any pieces of advice that can be given? I wouldn't mind undertaking this game for a speedrun.
http://www.twitch.tv/ratfunk and http://www.twitch.tv/vayarda both run it, though vayarda does a no large skips category
Hi MrStarbird,

Pleased to learn that new people want speedrun this game. If you want speedrun LandStalker, you already need to choose which version you want to play : American and European versions are different from the Japanese version which have many more bugs. If you are interested by them, I invite you to go on the Kanon's channel, who speedruns this category (http://www.twitch.tv/kanonkessen).
As regards Japanese, there are two specific categories, Statueless (or No Large Skip) and Any%, which uses a bug programming with an object, the Death Statue. This allows to be poisoned one time out of ten and die in the Zak's area and through the trees, which skip the third of the game. It's still a annoying category because of the RNG. Statueless or No Large Skip category is more interesting since it depends only on the speedrunner to finish the run.

Leader of Starbirdia!
I'm probably going to play out the US version as that is what I have for the time being. I'm not sure what a 100% run entails, I can only imagine all treasures or all items.  again, not sure what other categories there would be for the US version.

I will probably be streaming on my twitch @ http://www.twitch.tv/mrstarbird, but I'm still new to the streaming and speedrunning scene, so anything on there may just be more casual.

EDIT: I'm testing the game out as far as a US Statueless run goes. Got a bit to work on, but I'll be honest, I've never made it to Mercator in less than 1 hour before, so an IGT of 59 minutes up to the Crypt to me is impressive, though I know I can cut out plenty of time.

EDIT 2: Question... is going through the tree and enabling the warps optimal? I didn't go through it my first time but to escape Greenmaze it seems like it would cut out a lot of time.
to kanon cutting out the trees for 100% is not optional and as for a us catagory 100% might be your best bet yes. as when i statred i praticed till the end of mirs in english till i cut the 56 as was suggested by the Hsanrb.
Hey everyone!

Just wanted to pop in and ask if the times are still valid for WR or if there have been any changes? Doesn't look like many people run this game? I have only seen RatFunk so far.
Really love this game and will occasionally run the us/european/english statueless category as it shows the most of the game (and I really love the crypt for old memory sakes Smiley )
So far i had 2 legit runs and I got a nice time for starters of 2hrs 42 mins with a lot of safetystrats and still too many deaths.
Getting to 2hrs 35mins should be easily done in the near future, maybe more. Smiley

So, who else is still running this game?
Oh and btw I play the game from the Sega Genesis collection from Steam.

So long guys,
gotta find me a bird now and pay him 2000 golds...

Hi Taloof,

Good luck and have fun for your runs, you need it Grin Unfortunately, I stopped to run Landstalker but I hope that I could restart a day.
I run the Jap Version but I have interested about the US Version by curiosity. I didn't see the new strats of Ratfunk and if it could be apply on the US Version, but with the current strats, I think that the time could be down to 2h15~2h20 ? It's the same strats of Jap Version with the Crypt, Verla's Mine and another routing for Lake's Shrine, so 30min extra for US Version seems reasonable.

Hey thanks man! Smiley

Well the japanese version surely saves quite some time with all the places where you can clip through and to be honest just the mere thought of not having to deal with Verla Mines is the biggest bait for me to try and get my hands on a japanese version. (Because F*** Verla Mines...)
Then again as I mentioned I do like to show more of the game and a couple of my followers on Twitch agree with that.
Crypts Yay!
Verla Mines Nay!

About saving time:

- I know that I can cut at least 8 minutes just by getting rid of my safteystrats. (For example Life Stock in Crypts. Boom! saved ~30 seconds!)
- Especially my agressive playstyle costs me so much time. If I can refine it to the point were I am able to handle critical situations on the spot without loosing too much health then I am on the right track.
- In regards to luck. I do like that the game is heavily dependend on the input of the runner. So perfect execution is crucial for a good run and I think I get a better feeling for Nigel. (Mind you I play with an Xbox 360 controller for PC. Playing with a stick instead of the d-pad took quite some time to get used to)
Don't forget that the strength of Nigel is calculated compared of your number of livestocks. Lost 10-15s in a place could be save 30-40s in another place. It's why it's so difficult to make a routing in Landstalker Undecided
Yup I know. Don't know the exact conversion rate but there should be at least some stops which I can ignore.
The worst boss in game where Livestock probably is the most important is the firedemon. This battle is just...

Normally I end up with ~55HP at King Nole's Treasureroom.
Need some testing for myself to see how low I can go and still be able to sustain enough damage to survive.
Damn I got 2 very good runs today! Finished the first one with 2:25:55. Then I got a much better time of 2:20:36 in my 2nd run of my Statueless (english version) runs! Smiley
Sub 2:20 is possible!! But that will be a goal for next year. Wink

Here is the run for anyone interested: http://www.twitch.tv/taloof/c/5767205

Congrats Taloof, I said that the sub 2h20min was been possible Grin we wait you on Jap Version Wink
Hehe thank you!
I do want to check out a couple of things first though and try to get sub 2:20.
The biggest issue is definitely the dog at the beginning.

But yeah, I almost know all the items in the treasure chests by heart now (which is my biggest problem for switching to japanese version besides learning the new route and such.).
2015 is going to be an awesome year Cheesy
Hi, everyone.

I'm a runner over at TASVideos and am currently working on a 100% TAS for Landstalker (based on Kanon's strats).  At the moment, there are a number of significant optimizations over the niconico any% TAS, along with some new tricks I uncovered that...might be able to be performed in real time (with everything, it depends on RNG).

Anyhow, there was one MAJOR improvement idea that I had in mind concerning obtaining the Death Statue, in the JPN version.  I think it's possible to bypass getting it altogether!  Simply put, instead of getting the statue, just have Nigel stockpile some more HP and Eke Ekes.  From here (assuming there are no other Red Mushrooms close by), Nigel can take the Teleport Tree in the beginning of the Mountainous Area and warp back to get poisoned again.  In real time, I believe it's relatively easy enough to stockpile enough Eke Ekes to keep Nigel alive long enough to reach the second set of Axe Magic trees, and then the Lake Shrine, etc.

Is anyone willing to look into this to see if it's consistently possible to pull off in real-time?

I enjoy watching the real-time runs, also! Smiley

Hi ars4326,

I examined this possibility about the poison when I runned the game. The concern is not the number of Eke Eke, but the timer for poisoned condition. Indeed, after 5-10s~, the poison disappears. However, this strat is maybe possible in a TAS, because when you attack with Ryle, the poison timer stops until Ryle moves. If the same strat for the Gold Statue. If Ryle attacks+moves, the poison timer maybe doesn't move and you strat could be possible. But the timing is too short in a speedrun. Good luck for your TAS thumbsup
ah yea theres actually a lot wrong with the nico nico tas and so much improvable for it, manitouX of youtube(link above) has some hidden videos and i myself have soem unrealesed tas strats, i would like to know what you use to record the tas so i could do it right for statueless, and yea that poison wont last long enough and theres a closer spot to get poisoned anyway which still dont make it.

Can't wait to see the new TASs guys! Keep up the good work! Smiley
I already decided to give JAP Statueless a go after my little marathonthing which will probably last me into february. There are as well new Hyrule Warrior DLCs, runners and races on my list. So your WR is still safe for now but I will try my best to grab it from you soon! thumbsup
