I like SirVG's idea of carpooling and going out for some of the meals.  Maybe a little DC-area sightseeing can be mixed in too for those interested?

This has too much potential to go badly during the marathon, best to do it before or after.  Last year I got stuck at the hotel for a night because I'm a dumbass, and I probably would've had to stay a hell of a lot longer except I luckily ran into nate when he was picking up someone else the next morning =/

Lol, Spineshark.  I'll have you know I took two trips to try to find you Wink
that Metroidvania guy
tjp rescued me from the hotel in 2 attempts after i magically got lost from everyone and ended up sleeping in rane's room

Those prices do look really reasonable.  I think I'm comfortable with this situation, even if the food situation is sub-par.  I think we should be able to handle that alright.
SEGA Junkie
Kareshi, I think if feasel is willing to play Snake Rattle n Roll at the marathon then you should play piano to it. It's only a short run and there would be a grand total of three tracks to learn (9 and 10 have the same music based on the SDA run) but really I would just love to hear you play the level 8 theme Tongue

EDIT: didn't realise feasel wanted to do a warpless! That might be even better; it's still a short run and there would be more track variety (I hope!).

August 7th update: I might have found our place, it's the National 4H center: http://www.4hcenter.org/

Right now I'm trying to see what everyone who is going to attend the marathon thinks about it. Go to this post for more information.

Questions for 4h list:

Can we have drinks in the meeting room? (non-alcoholic :P)
Can we bring a couch?
Instruments?
When is the internet upgrade taking place?

Should fix that link Mike.  Wink
Oh hey everybody what's up?

I haven't posted here yet, but I do intend on going to this and I look forward to it greatly!

I realize that there's not much time for any other games, and I've committed to Halo and Portal.

If something happens, I would be thrilled to run more games like Batman and Robin (~1hr), and / or MGS2 (~2hr).

As for the charity, I'd suggest the Brian Morden Foundation. Brian was active in the Bungie Community, and was even given a small part in Halo. Since this is about the games, I think this would be a perfect way to tie the two together. It would certainly guarantee support and contributions from the Halo community and Bungie themselves at least.

Also I'd really like to do a run for ToeJam and Earl 2. I realize it's not as popular, but if Deign's streams have been any indication, it seems to be extremely entertaining even for people who have never played it before. Donations could be taken to determine which character I play as, or if someone else shows up who knows how to run it (Deign, Insipid, ???), a co-op run could also be done

This would be insanely fun, but unfortunately, I will probably never be able to attend these Magfest marathons as long as they are held around the new year (or while I'm studying law, anytime aside from summer).  So, I doubt I could participate unless there was a version of the game which could be played online...

Of course, I could stream from my own location, but then Deign would not be able to join me.

If you have any questions about the 4-H Center, then ask now so I can send Boniene a list of questions when she is back from vacation on Monday.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Okay, I received a response for the questions we asked. Boniene's answers are in red.

Hi Boniene,

I hope you had a nice vacation. So far everyone's reaction to the 4-H center is positive, but we still have some questions.

Can we have drinks in the meeting room? A couple of bottles of water would be nice (I remember there was a water fountain somewhere in the penny hall) Yes you can have drinks in the rooms.  We can provide them through our catering department or there is also vending machines in the rec room.

I know the center has chairs, but does it have a couch? If not, are we allowed to bring in a couch? Is there any other furniture that might be of note?  We do have some couches that we can set-up in the meeting room

Are we allowed to bring instruments in? I know the center has some pianos, but some of our members might be planning to play instruments along with the game music. Instruments are fine as long as they aren’t played at a high volume

When is the internet upgrade taking place? Some of us are (understandably) wary of an internet upgrade if it's around the time of our marathon because of our internet situation with the hotel last year. We actually have already made the upgrade

How does payment work? Do we pay a deposit then pay the rest when we get there? I'm wondering because I'm still not 100% sure how many people will be coming (still seems to be around 40), and there's a couple who wants to get a double room for themselves. 25% of the total amount is due within 2 weeks of receiving the contract, the remaining amount is due 1 month before your event.

I hope this helps J

I then I asked if what she said about drinks means we can bring our own, and she said no. Sad They do have water fountains at the event though.

If anyone has any other questions, then ask now.
No outside drinks? Damn... I'm gonna need a lot of vending machine money.
gamelogs.org
if there are vending machines then i find it hard to believe they wouldn't let you bring in outside drinks. either way i doubt they'll have guards on the doors or anything, so just put stuff in a backpack or something.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Arkarian is a wise and great learned one.
She talks like said catering service is the god damned mafia.

Just smuggle your drinks into your room. They're not going to invade your privacy.

I also hope their food menu has enough variety to outweigh the cost. Their menus are in complete disarray. =\
That would be smarter than feeding their vending machine $50...

Seeing how I carry a backpack with me wherever I tend to go, usually carrying my laptop and such, and since I usually carry it with me even if I leave my friend's place just to go to BK, I can smuggle in a lot of drinks, be it 2 liters, 20oz, or a case of cans. So if we need a packmule, I'll do it.

it'll be like freshman year all over again.
Everybody's favorite monster
Oh man, this is going to be one hell of a week. I am looking forward to seeing everyone smuggling their drinks inside.
On a side note, i really think this is the place for us. Once the drink-smuggling schedule is worked out we are good to go!

I could save the marathon half an hour for another game if I play Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes instead of the PlayStation version. Last time I ran it it took me about an hour and a half... 1:40 is a safe bet. Thoughts?

CMiller: Sorry I missed your post. I think Metal Gear solid 2 would be pretty likely, but Batman and Robin is a big fat no, it's mostly a forgotten game nowadays.

Carcinogen: Personally, I would prefer Twin Snakes because it's shorter and it's mostly the same game (but easier in some parts), but maybe some people will consider it blasphemy? I say yes, but we have to see what other people think.

BTW, I asked Boniene some more questions about payment. Again, her responses are in red.

1. What is the absolute latest time we can make a contract?  As long as we still have the space you can make it a month before your event.  I just can’t guarantee that the space will be available.

2. What are acceptable forms of payment? Paypal? Credit card? E-check/Bank Account? We take Credit Cards and Checks

We're not exactly pressed for time because we still have nearly five months left, and January is one of their deadest months, but I think it's better to start an official headcount with people putting in a deposit earlier rather than later.
Everybody's favorite monster
I could pay right now if you want. Just let me know.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
I updated the schedule a bit, list of changes below:

-I added times to some games, like Zelda: A Link to the Past.
-I cut Batman and Robin and Faxanadu because they're too obscure.
-I cut Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Two Thrones because they're long and not as well-liked as Sands of Time. Also, MatrixTN said it was fine if I cut those games.

I'm definitely on the border of cutting Paper Mario. I just need to ask UltraJMan about cutting it. Also, I'm 99% sure Yoshi's Island will be a any% run instead, which will knock off 2 hours. I know Tri-Hex will complain about this change two months later when he actually reads the forum.

Trekhaak: No need to rush payment. I need to determine what is the best setup for us, how many nights most people want to stay, and how much the event will cost per person (roughly) before anyone needs to pay.

The totals without food assume we are getting two conference rooms.

I meant to ask about this but it completely left my mind. Why is it the total without food higher? Is that using their catering service?

Trying to jot down the expenses so I can get a rough estimate of what I'll need.

I think it's a quote of beds only, all rentals w/o food, and no total with food is in there.  That's the way I read it.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
VG is correct, there is no total with food. I'm just saying total without food to emphasize that food isn't included in the cost.
