My feelings on The Demon Rush
Yeah, that marathon. Planning is going to start now because the earlier we start, the better. Well, actually, saying "started" is a bit of a lie, because Breakdown and I met up this weekend to discuss next year's marathon.

The Theme and Title

Or more like, no theme. That's right, we're opening up the selection to any console (including PC if anyone offers). If you need a theme, then how about, "games SDA rocks at".

Actually, Breakdown suggested a good name, "Awesome Games Done Quick," which apparently was founded by an Australian Englishman.

Streaming Service

It's probably going to be ustream again, unless if livestream has something super great that ustream doesn't have. One thing cool about ustream has that we didn't know until halfway through the marathon (thanks to Phil from TSG), is the co-hosting feature, which lets you host another ustreamer on your stream. In other words, we could have someone off-site race someone on-site, like Tiki vs. Frezy_Man in MMX. Cheesy

Justin.tv would be great if it didn't start kicking off people for passing the region limit. Sad

Potential Improvements

-Food Fund: Unless if you're Molotov, a Domino's pizza diet isn't too appealing. Let's have everyone chip in 10-15 dollars for a food fund so we can buy some food and cook it ourselves. MercuryZelda said she would gladly help cook if she came. Gogo gender roles! Cheesy

-Have a video to show during downtime: Now hopefully we will have less downtime than last year, but if we do have downtime for preparing an event like pianovania (just an example...for now), we could show a speedrun or a funny video like Skip Rodgers to kill the downtime.

-More special events: Now we can't plan for all of these, or else we wouldn't have something as special as shirt ripping time ;D. However, some of the best moments of our marathon were events such as Pianotoads, Super Blindfolded Bros. and FF6 Opera scene. We could definitely plan a couple more things for next year, such as Piano-something else, or even a band for a game, if the game has a versus mode and more than one runner wants toplay the game, they can play the versus mode for the right to play the game. I'm sure there's more we can do, but that's just to get the ball rolling.

-Game Factoids: Thanks to Tigger77 for this idea. Just 30 seconds to a minute of brief info about each game we run. Stuff like the release date, how well-received it was, how much it sold, random trivia. People like this sort of thing, so it can't hurt.

-Side Quest donations: We should be open to the possibility of doing a side quest if people donate, but only if the side quest isn't very long.

-Scan the pictures we're giving away as prizes so people can actually them (Thanks pootrain and Carc!)

-Runner Introductions and Post-run interviews

-Implementing a timer: I know Joshthefunkdoc has implemented one for his runs, so this can't be difficult.

-Possibly limiting the amount of people in the game room: Frezy_Man and Breakdown suggested this one because sometimes quiter people were being overpowered by louder people (EMPTYEYE! ;)). Personally, I'm not so sure about this idea because it might make commentary more regimented and less relaxed and casual.

Location

August 30th update: We are going to stay at the National 4-H Center: http://www.4hcenter.org/

It's in Chevy Chase, Maryland, which is right on the DC/Maryland border

Please read the following topic about payment and signing up: http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/marathon_sign_up_payment__serious_time_edition.html

If you want to see pictures: http://www.4hcenter.org/tour/index.html

Right now I'm trying to see what everyone who is going to attend the marathon thinks about it. Go to this post for more information.

The questions I asked have been answered. Look at the following two posts for the answers.

Length and date

Length

The Marathon will be at least 100 hours because we're holding it from January 6-10. The exact length will be easier to determine once the schedule is closer to being finalized.

Date

January 6-10th, we're gonna go for broke and do 100 hours!.

Update August 30th: We will be setting up and having a lock-in January 5th. We will also have some bonus streaming the two days after the marathon.

Games to play

August 8th update:

Okay, we have a lot of games covered, but we're still missing some important big ones.

-Mario 64
-Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask - Jiano and runnerguy can cover these. Jiano said it's likely he can come, he's just looking up flight info.
-Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 and Knuckles - Stanski keeps saying maybe. Angry

Preliminary list of games we're running for the marathon

August 30th: People really aren't adding anything at the moment, and we have good variety of games covered, so the list is actually pretty close to final. Scheduling will follow soon.

Let's worry about this when we have some more details hammered out.

As always, I am open to suggestions.

Last but not least, don't worry, no matter what happens we will have the marathon!
Thread title:
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Personally, I would prefer option 2 (in between New Year's and MAGFest) because it means we're not stuck at the awkward time of New Year's, and we don't conflict with MAGFest. I know a lot of people wouldn't be able to make it to MAGFest afterwards, but I also know a lot of people would choose the marathon over MAGFest.
1-Up!
I don't see any reason why I wouldn't be able to make it this year (but of course, anything is possible).

My preference would be number 2, same as Mike.  It just seems to be the best of the 3.  I can spend New Years with family and fiancee and not miss any school.

Also, I can run Wario Land Wii for the marathon if you like.  ~1:40:xx

Maybe between now and then I will become proficient at a game more people like lol.

I'll also know closer to the date whether or not I'll be for sure coming but for now you can chalk me up as a yes.
Fucking Weeaboo
After watching you guys have fun at last year's marathon, I decided that I'm so going, barring either weather or work being a jerk ass about not giving me time off (given the way winter was last year, hopefully weather won't be a factor).

I fricken claim Rondo if I'm going.  Either that or a race with Satoryu with the PSP version.

I've got plenty of other choices that I could do.  Throwing in Lament of Innocence would be fun.  I'd also like to do Legend of Mana or maybe Dawn of Mana instead to give it some more attention.  For Kirby, romscout and I suggested at the last marathon that we should try to do a 4P run of Amazing Mirror.  It would be a pain in the ass to setup, but so epic in the end.  any% would be quite short (15-20 minutes I figure) while 100% would be a bit longer (should be around 30-40 minutes).

As for when, it doesn't really matter.  I don't plan on attending the actual MAGFest.  Charity marathon with a bunch of weirdos?  I'm in.
Is PJ
I haven't submitted any runs here yet, but that is mostly because I am too lazy to mail them out right now.  :/  And because I'm waiting to finish Actraiser 2.  I'm definitely interested in attending though.  ^_^

I can run the entire Battletoads series (both GB games, both NES games, both SNES games), although I'd prefer to just do Battlemaniacs, and then the two for NES.  I can also do Actraiser 1 (Professional mode) and 2, and Robotrek if we need to add some time.

Option 2 would work best for me, but I am really flexible with travel time.  And I don't really matter.  Haha.
welcome to the machine
I would prefer option 2 because I would like to actually go to magfest.
Haters gonna hate
Come hell or high water I'm going to be there, and the sooner we set a date the less likely it is I put my job risk doing so.

Option 2 or 3 is best for me, though I would like to propose a hybrid of those options which I will give the very original name of Option 4:  start mid week before MAGfest and run into it (something like Wednesday to Saturday)

Pros:  Really want to go to MAG, don't want to take more time off than you have to make it, but also want to do the marathon?  Now you can do both!  Plus people who want to primarily do the marathon can still spend time at MAG before they're tearing everything down.

Cons:  Mid week start away from the holidays would likely hurt early viewership.  Plus basically all the other cons of option 3.

I will also say I'm very opposed to option 1.  The cons section says it all:  IT'S NEW YEARS!
Not a walrus
Option 2 is best for me, even though I'd like to go to Magfest as well, so I'll have to figure out something to do for a week.

I'd like to maybe do Crystalis (hour and a half?) but I'd need to practice it a fair bit before the marathon since I've only played through it once in the last decade or so. Oh, and Metal Storm (13-ish minutes).

Edit: As long as we have Breakdown's hat, all will be well.

I'd like to come and #2 would probably work the best for me; #3 might work depending on my school's academic calendar but it would not be as convenient.

I only think the downtime video idea is sound if there is a chance that we'll have a LOT of downtime in between any two games. I liked seeing what was going on between games if there was maybe a max of 10 minutes of downtime, but any more and it got boring.

Definitely agree with game factoids idea. Side quests idea sounds good and not only do people love interviews but they'd be great ways to fill up downtime between runs. I'm not familiar with the timer Josh uses but I think it's only usable with an emulator; there's probably some other option feasible for live streaming.

Games I'd be willing to run at this point:
Tetris Attack - 10:00 including credits sounds about right, but without the credits it's more like 7:00 tbh unless you got horrendous luck
Kirby's Avalanche/any Puyo clone - 10:00 discluding credits
Wario's Woods - 32:00 discluding credits
Kid Icarus - TBD though I'm thinking it'll be around 35:00 for a conservative run
Bucky O'Hare - 30:00ish I think
Goof Troop - TBD
Joe & Mac 2 - 20:00ish I think

I expect only 1, 2, and maybe 4 will be interesting/well-known enough for the marathon. Also, if I confirm I'm able to come and there're some 8/16-bit games that should be run and don't have a runner, I wouldn't mind picking one (that I'm at least a little familiar with) up.

SEGA Junkie
I hereby christen this marathon "Awesome Games Done Quick".

Short of that I have nothing to add cause I'm probably not gonna make this one Sad I'm still willing to try and remotely co-op with romscout on Splosion Man though. If that doesn't work out though he can do it himself and I'm pretty sure he'll rock it.

Gladly!  Should be fun!  ^_^
Option 2 works best for me.

I suppose I have time to learn an additional game if needed.

You got a deletion wish?
I'll take #2.

Only thought for me (rest shot down by Mike)

Thexder Neo (PS3).  The look on my face when I came across this!  It will be on Normal Mode.  Not sure time-wise here (need to start writing down level times) but I'll say under 10 minutes.

As far as locale, I'd say big enough for the raiding party that is SDA.  Sleeping bag ftw.

Edited to scratch rejections.
Willing to teach you the impossible
I cant make it, although I would LOVE to. But I saw that feature you were talking about being able to co-host, so would it be doable to have a race of Super C and/or Contra between me and frezy?

Alternatively, we could also just set up a two player co-op of that. For the stream it'd be not much different from setting up for a race, and we actually have the means to do co-op practice long before we even go to the event. Unless 2 people pop outta nowhere in this thread and volunteer to run, we might have to settle with that. :p

So yea, it looks like option 1 is out the window already (thankfully), and I'm not too picky on whichever of the other options are chosen, because whatever issues come up with work will probably be the same. Not much is drawing me to MAGfest, but I like all the arcade machines people brought (even if over half my time on those was spent on Muchi Muchi Pork... any other arcade-only CAVE titles = sex) and got some nice pickups from vendors, so a day or two there wouldn't hurt if it was possible.

Plenty of people could probably already guess this, but I'll go ahead and list games that I'm either definitely running when I am there or am considering working on as possibilities for this:

-CV: SotN (DUH!), just straight up running it or rematch with Rane... prefer not to touch Richter or deal with the best ending (196%+) run
-All those Kirby titles Uyama listed in the first post. Dream Land I should probably work on an Extra Game run because the regular game is like, REALLY really easy to the point of being uninteresting to those not familiar with the game already. Extra Game is much more macho and goes a little faster anyway (faster boss fights). I'm definitely going for the gordo skip in the final stage for cool points, even if it results in a tri-hexesque blooper. For Adventure, sometime this summer I'll start working on a run that doesn't abuse the UFO glitch (I'm not too great at it), but we'll see how it goes. No promises as of yet. For Super Star, I'm not quite 0xwas material but I can make the game cry pretty well with practice. If anyone wants to jump in on co-op'ing this with me at the marathon for some games, let me know. I'm up for that kind of fun and can plan the runs accordingly.
-As mentioned above in a reply to Sir VG, I'm very much in favor of multiplayer Kirby & the Amazing Mirror.
-Castle Crashers co-op, I'm in.
-I was already interested in learning to run MMX6 and was going to start working on that soon. Definitely no promises on it yet, but I'll be playing it a lot in the summer and we'll see how it goes.
We all scream for Eyes Cream
I'd like to go but money might be my only issue. I could pass it off as a Christmas gift though. I could do Kingdom Hearts 2.
Darn it, why did this topic have to magically appear while I was away? BWA!

There's no way in heck that I'll miss the marathon. I'll hang around for MAGFest too, even though I hate how pointless that whole thing is. I'm paying money just to hang out with SDA people? Absurd, but that's what happens every year.

Other things I wanted to note:

- Food fund is cool, but I'm 99% sure I'll be ordering pizza regardless. Saying that now to avoid offending anybody who cooks stuff. Tongue

- For Kirby Superstar, I've been kind of curious about wasting a few minutes with Samurai Kirby 2 player (to check reaction times between runners). I'm sure this is a dumb idea, but I wanted to mention it anyway for some reason.

- About the limit on people in the room, I'm very strongly against that idea. That's exactly what happened at the start of the last marathon, and it was really a drag by comparison to how things were at the end. People just need to learn to treat the room like a library or something, which I don't think is much to ask. (Also, I would hope the game room itself is big enough to hold everybody anyway. Kind of like the lock-in place, you know?)

- No SOS makes me frown, but I guess it's to be expected. To be perfectly honest, the downtime for the "torch" run last time really had me scratching my head when I watched the videos. The downtime was more than enough to complete SOS easily, but eh. I understand this decision, so I won't complain or anything. But if you do find like 5 minutes of spare time though (credits = no)... Tongue

- As for the location, please let it be the latter with sleeping bags++. Spending money on hotels is for squares, yes?

- Option 2 sounds best. I honestly preferred the setup for last year's marathon, but I completely understand the reasoning for doing it later. (Don't like the idea of MAGFest being so close to school time though, but what can you do?)

Game selection thoughts:

- Was the idea of God Hand thrown out for being obscure, or did it just slip your mind? Curious, because I really should get back to practicing this if it's the latter.

- I'm still very much willing to a Shinobi III competition with Mike, but I don't know if he wants to include the game/do that.

- Rondo is not a problem. I'd gladly bring my Hori pad and Wii if someone wants to run that. Could also be used for Cave Story if Nitrodon wants to play that version. Also covers Streets of Rage 2, if you don't feel like messing with cartridge mishaps. (I think you'd want the awesome 6-button though, so...)

- The idea of helping Romscout in Superstar is appealing, but internet woes say that probably isn't wise. Oh well.

- In a 72 hour marathon, are you really sure about the concept of including Final Fantasy X? I understand the $$$ logic, but dang does that hurt the total game count.

- Chrono Trigger even at 6 hours huh? Now, if only people had taste liked Chrono Cross too... Tongue

Uh, I better stop writing now. Maybe a later post with games I could do, but God Hand and Shinobi III are all I can really hope for off the top of my head.

I'd be interested to try playing a bit with it, but more then likely I'll just use my PS2 controller.  It's the best thing I've found to do Guardian Fist with.
Exoray
I'd think I'll be wanting to atleast see MAGFest for a day or so, so option 2, 3 or 4 all works for me.

Since it's in the request list, count me in for Genesis Aladdin Wink

I can probably think of several other games I would be able to run, will return with some suggestions and/or other games from the list that I could practice for.
destroy them with lazers
You could possible have a stream with Street Fighter 2, 3, 4, MvC2 ect for runners who have quite a bit of down time?
SEGA Junkie
If there's a PvP stream going on I have to demand a Tetris Attack tournament.
DS Dictator
I'm like Heidman state for now.

If I do manage to get there I would try out Streets of Rage 1 (30 minutes) & Golden Axe 3 (26 minutes).... but those alone concerns me as:
* I'm playing both of those on the Ultimate Collection disc and it's PAL (doubt it would work on a NTSC xbox 360)
* Has anyone managed to use a Gamertag from Europe to work on an NTSC Xbox 360 (?)... Shadow Complex rings me a bell if it does work.
* Golden Axe 1 should be added, very short (15 minutes at worst) and it's pretty well known for the stupid A.I.

I survived MIKE-Fest 1
Option 2 ftw

I would also prefer less people in the gaming room or at least shouting all over the place running cross TV and so.

Last year was really great but really casual (No problem with that) we should (Mike should) decide if that should stay that way or goes more professional (more preparation work)

Examples: For every run we could make a sheet with infos about the run: Current SDA record, usles information TAS time how often improved and so on. also Infos about the runner them self (needs double check with the runner)
this sheet is used by the commentors so he coud will in silence passage with those infos part by part also I would say max 3 commentator at the same time But well prepared . Because of no commentater preparation last year the group commetates was a good solution but if we now have the time to prepare  Grin

For the timing and running behind schedule thing:
Whats with this Idear: lets say Frazy is playing Contra (5.15pm) estimated time 20 min he finished in 12 min the next game is Devel may Cry by Breckdown start (5.35) the gab of 8 mins are now filled with give aways (Pictures thank part and runner interview so that Devel May Cry start as the schedule says it if a frazy needs 18 mins the giveaway interviews go away and Breckdown starts immediately.

Games I could play:

No Idea jet will think about that in 5 weeks than my exams are over (I have actually no time at all now)

Sorry for the mistakes I'm just really bad in English

Hahaha, well, I do love cooking. This plus the knitting just screams 'girl!' I guess. (No offense, DJGrenola! After all, knitting used to be solely a man's activity when it was devised. ;))

I'm one of the weird people who would actually prefer option 1, but 2 wouldn't be bad. 3 or 4 would not be nearly as good for me, considering I don't actually care about attending MAGFest... Just the marathon for me, please. Smiley However, no matter what date ends up being chosen, I WILL be there. I'll do my damnedest to bring Lag with me, too; we'd both be up for doing some live commentary, podcast-style, if anyone's interested.

As for games... I've been wanting to run Kirby's Adventure, but I don't know how I'd be at performing it live. If romscout's not definite about playing it, I could start practicing now and give you guys a better estimate as to my skills before we get too close to the marathon. I'm also pretty good with both modes of original Tetris though I don't have a cart anymore... I don't know if anyone would want to see Tetris B beaten fast, though!

I could practice some Zelda songs on my ocarina (I have a replica of the Ocarina of Time, haha) for the Zelda runs. I can't envision something on the scale of Pianotoads, though, as I don't have the entire score of any of the games, but maybe it would be interesting?

Lastly, I have a question: What type of knitted donation incentives would you guys like to see? I was thinking hats, because they're quick and unisex. I could also do some scarves, again because they're fairly quick. I was just thinking of having some simple characters and/or emblems of different series on otherwise plain backgrounds. I might be enticed to do something more complex, like the Mega Man helmet, but I'd have to know what would be wanted. Would anyone wear a Chocobo hat? *laughs* Oh, and I'll definitely do some headbands like Solid Snake's and of course the Contra guys... Maybe I should stitch a small 'SDA' somewhere on everything to identify them as coming from the marathon. Smiley
