Should red or rock pikmin get the Armored Mawdad corpse? I don't know what you'd need more.
So I did my first playthrough with the Remote and Nunchuk and started learning the first few days using the Gamepad. Aiming with the Gamepad is extremely frustrating. Sometimes when I go to unlock from something after having my Pikmin charge, they will disperse. Does anybody else have problems with the gamepad or do I just need to get used to it?
Day 3 is brutally difficult. I've managed to defeat the Vehemoth Phosbat at literally the last moment before sunset, but that obviously leaves no time to bring the Heroine's Tear back to the ship. I've got a pretty decent route mapped out, but it needs to be faster if I want to clear that map in one day.
Spooie: you get used to the gamepad, although I prefer using the pro controller (same controls just minus the touchscreen which you can keep close by), I find the pro controller's analog controls to be a bit better although that might just be bias from running zelda games for a bit on emulator using them
I'd say the controller is a matter of taste. I can't stand playing with the Gamepad/Pro Controller. The pointer is much faster and I like using it a lot more. The Wii Remote+Nunchuck's only downside is the lack of proper camera controls.
I guess the only thing I have against the remote and nunchuk is that you have to aim precisely at what you want to lock onto, otherwise your camera will get messed up.
I've recently converted towards Wii Remote and Nunchuck. In my opinion, it's got the edge by a little bit because of aiming flexibility. Although, I'm not used to the shitty camera control yet so I'm not doing that great with it at the moment.

It would seem that the loading zone for the yellow pikmin cave can be triggered from above it if you get up there through captain throwing. However, it's a really precise spot that's needed to hit the loading zone. I'm not sure if it's a one off thing or if it could work for other areas / loading zones such as the day 3 stone wall next to the electrical fence.

However, even if it worked, you'd need to work out how to get up there with 1 captain, see if Britanny gets left behind due to the bridge never getting complete and see if there's some fun invisible walls hidden somewhere on the way to boss #2. It's just a theory I've got, it probably leads nowhere Tongue

This is something everyone probably knows by now, it's pretty obvious from what I can tell, but I'll post it anyway:

It would seem that if you throw a captain onto a angled surface, they'll do some sort of waving animation for a couple of seconds. This seems to be there in order to make sure that you don't get into areas you're not meant to (as they slide off during the animation). You can get them "stuck" so that they don't fall off in some areas (and therefore get places).

Makes the second visit of Distant Tundra a bit easier for All Fruits because there's 1 less sub-boss to deal with now.

Damage Boostin'
Meant to have this posted yesterday, but Sony Vegas crashed on me while I was at work.

Here are a couple ways to get OoB, hopefully one of them could be useful.
I see one of them has been found and expanded upon, good stuff!

I also found a way to enter Formidable Oak from the exit if you haven't seen it yet:

The holy grail of Twilight River 1 day attempts. It's now possible to fight against Scornet Maestro before the red bridge is fully constructed.

Edit: Final boss in over 3 minutes (not my video)

So some random stuff

1. The devs of this game reeeeally like invisible walls ugh. Greenalink posted earlier that you can skip blue Pikmin, but you actually can't because there's an invisible wall blocking you from picking up the fragments that goes away after you get blues. Also, I got a bunch of Pikmin behind the bag leading to the Sandbelching Meerslug without having rescued Charlie, but no go, because invisible walls. Ditto for the back entrance to the Vehemoth Phosbat's room.

2. I found two really minor timesavers in the yellow Pikmin cave in Distant Tundra. First, there's a speech trigger next to the Pikmin sprouts that makes Brittany say "Pikmin sprouts?" You can actually get within plucking range of the sprouts without touching the trigger, and for some reason if you do that it skips that bit of dialogue completely. Second, if the cutscene for the ball rolling triggers while you're plucking Pikmin, all the sprouts get plucked instantly after you skip the cutscene.

3. Another interesting thing I found: if you're moving toward a sprout to pluck it, and you press B to cancel immediately before you touch the sprout, you'll pluck it and skip the plucking animation. Cool to know about but I think it's too precise to be useful outside TAS.

So yeah, screw invisible walls and I'm also really surprised how ridiculously easy it is to get out of bounds just about anywhere you want by throwing your partners, it's like nobody at Nintendo realized that it might be abusable. Also, I'm working on recording a deathless 7-day any%, I came up with some cool routes so it'll be fun to show that off soon. (Miles is working on one too though and he'll prolly be done before me since he's on the final boss already... I copied his strat for Twilight River, came up with all the rest myself for the most part)

Also, there's something I found really weird in Garden of Hope, I'd be curious to know if anyone has an answer for it. To the left of the passageway leading to the Quaggled Mireclops, there's a clipboard with a fruit under it. If you pull up the map there and go behind the clipboard, it transitions into a different area, even though there's nothing there. I thought it might be the passage leading to the boss, but if you compare you can tell it's not the same area. Tried getting OoB there, and succeeded because lol partner throwing, but there's no loading zone or anything. Anyone got any idea what that is?
I'm going to start work on optimizing the route for Day 3. Every time I run it I feel like I'm doing actions in a different order, so I want to get something nailed down for sure.

I'm guessing it's the very end of a pathway as there is a blackout before you 'intend to uncover it' to load and enter a different area.
How do you complete the garden of hope in one day? I only have four hours when I get to the boss, and I only have two hours to take back the treasure, which isn't enough.

The first thing I do is take four Pikmin to start collecting pellets. The entire rest of my squad starts breaking the dirt wall. Once all the pellets are collected, I send those four Pikmin after the bridge pieces that are already available. At about this time, the dirt wall will be finished. I send my squad to collect the bridge pieces, then the remainder get the bridge pieces on the other side. In the meantime, I pluck the Pikmin that have spawned.

After the bridge is built, we start moving towards Brittany. I usually completely ignore the Red Bulborb, and instead sneak behind it and start on the dirt wall immediately. Once the wall is down it's time to get the Rock Pikmin. I quickly collect all the pellets in the area and immediately move towards Brittany. Something crucial to remember is that everything crystal-based breaks faster if you continually throw Pikmin at it; do not send them at it and let them keep pounding at it on their own like with any other wall.

Getting Brittany is pretty straightforward. I haven't really looked enough at the entire run to know whether we should bother with the fruit, but it won't be too difficult to grab them and kill the Bulborb.

Next we move towards the bridge on the way to the boss area. We throw our entire squad and a captain to the other side of the river. Throw the Rock Pikmin first so that we don't have to worry about the Firey Blowhogs. Immediately have the Red Pikmin start working on the dirt wall, and then start breaking the crystal with your Rock Pikmin. Have your Rock Pikmin start collecting the bridge pieces, and then add your Red Pikmin in once they finish the dirt wall.

This should all give you ample time to defeat the boss and collect the treasure.
Oh, ignore the bulborb? That would probably save some time.

Ah, you see, I'd kill the blowhogs.

Thanks for the tips!
Day 2:

There's an easy quick way for the bridge going to the first boss. Just leave like 2-3 rock pikmin on the crystal bridge pieces and 2-3 red pikmin on the other bridge pieces. While you're fighting the boss, they'll continue to work and by the time you kill it, they should be finished.

Fruit Wise:

At the current moment, on day 2, I grab the strawberry (on the way back after Brittany) and the lemon (it makes you do most of the throwing anyway) on day 2. Obviously, you've got plenty of time to kill the Bulborb before your fruit carriers get anywhere near it.

While waiting for carriers, on day 4, I grab the two submerged fruit (the ones near both dirt walls). I can't remember the values of the fruit, but I think it's actually too much for an any% (back before 1 day twilight river).

Another good alternative is the plum next to the cardboard box in twilight river. Honestly, it doesn't really matter what you get as you can get enough fruit in between times where you're waiting for something to happen (i.e. carrying back map devices).

That being said, you don't need any fruit on the second trip to the garden as you get it back when you return Louie.

I'm still not sure what's happening timing wise. Is it new day (skip cut scenes) or completely fresh file (no skipping cut scenes)?
Well, it depends. The official game time counts replays of days, so should speed runs be measured in days instead of time? If not, then new files should always be used.
Ah right. So what you're saying is the in game clock keeps it's time when you go back to the first day? I didn't notice that, I was just using real time Tongue

I don't think days would work as just about everyone would have the same record.
Yeah, that's the problem... Sad
Also, speed runs would only depend on how fast you complete the first and last sequences if time was used... Would it really matter that much?
You can end a day early by pressing + and choosing end day Tongue
Oh, I never though about that being useful for speed runs! Cool!
I just get the strawberry and the Armored Mawdad's fruit, and that gives you enough juice to last the entire game.
Thanks for the tips; I brought back the corpse and phone (I was short four for the FBF) with time to spare!
