Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I found a glitch that allows skipping the gas can and the key for the mining machine in the auxiliary shaft. And just about everything else in that area.

Here's a video:

I unfortunately don't have any idea how that is done. I got it by accident on the first time and was able to do it a few times again using the same save file. Later when I recorded that video, still using the same save, it took several tries to get to work. After that I've been unable to get it happen. The cord does do some crazy things (can't grab it, jumps around), but I can't get it to stretch any more.

In the video, following things had been done. I don't know which of these have anything to do with the glitch, so I'll list everything.
- The key was in place
- The gas can (still rusted shut) was on ground
- A save file with both ends of the cable in place had just been loaded
- For some reason, I walked slower than normally

If this can be done without getting the can and the key, this should save loads of time. The reason why I had those items in the video is because this was my first playthrough and I got stuck in auxiliary shaft, using the hammer with the can was just too logical for me so I ended up breaking the game.

Haha, that's pretty awesome Smiley

I don't have a save near that place but I'll play up to that point to check it out. And yes that saves quite a bit of time.

EDIT: I've tried it a bit (Fortunately my speedrun save wasn't all too far off) but I couldn't get it to work. I did however notice that saving and loading the game in that place does screw up things a little bit. When you've got the cables plugged in and then save and load the game, the first cable end you touch will keep plugged in and you can't remove it anymore. But the cable didn't stretch for me Undecided
I can't do it any more eihter Undecided

I know there has to be something that triggers it, when I first discovered it I was able to get it to strecth several times in a row. Unfortunately I wasn't paying that much attention, I thought it was as simple as it first seemed and would work every time. I managed to get something to happen though. Like you said the cable can get stuck, from both ends. More interesting result was the other end (the one plugged in the table) becoming unholdable, whenever I tried to grab that end the cable would literally fly all over the place.
So... TheVoid will you finish the run? Because if not I'd love to run it!

I'll finish it "some day", don't know when. Got too much stuff I need to finish Tongue

But hey, if you want to run it, go ahead Smiley

If you try to run it, please do try that glitch I posted. Would be nice to at least have someone else succeed in doing it too.I was walking slower than normally, like I was crouching or pushing something. Maybe that has something to do with it? Crouch while loading? Would try it now myself but I don't have the game installed.

I'll see what I can do, I did try it once when I was at that part of the game when I played but it didn't work, I'll try reproducing what you did! Also, I don't know if it's just me but the tab space big jump doesn't seem to work anymore, I've tried it multiple times and I jump normally. :/
In the first report two links are not working. There is a normal link which you can download? Or you can fill in somewhere else?

New skip:

EDIT:
Looks like I underestimated what I did there, you can actually use that same glitch to fly all over the place. Right now I'm flying in the roof of that area with the TNT barrel, trying to get out of bounds.
I already knew about that one but it seemed to be useless because of some item you miss, I can't remember exactly.

Kotti: 2011-01-31 07:53:41 am
Oh well, figures, it was too easy to find. But I'm not giving up on that just yet, maybe I'll find some way to skip whatever that item may be.

EDIT:
Aww, I thought I had it but it seems like the loading zone for the next area isn't there until after the explosion. I managed to get out of bounds for a second right where the next area should be but there seemed to be nothing.
Okay, the first area is unskippable as far as I can tell.

But I was just able to replicate that mining machine glitch from before and despite still only knowing that it's related to walking slowly and saving/loading, I think I could do it again. Maybe I should record a segment from that save spot to the next area and that could be used in the run?

Bumb, I've started running the game. Would anyone like to help me plan/look for timesavers the rest of the run? I only know the game well up to this point. So far my run is beating 2x_Alpha's old run by about 3 minutes. And are there any simesavers I've missed so far? It should be pretty easy to go back to redo some segments.

The editing is a little wonky (especially in the beginning), I think I should end a segment on the brightest frame of the saving moment. That seems to be when the save file is created and it's pretty easy to edit.

Hey, you got that weird plug thing working to push the machine! Found a consistent way to do it?

Well, it's a good effort, but not good enough yet Wink

Apparently you're not aware of the Inventory Jump trick (Jump and open the inventory). With that trick you can bypass the whole beginning stuff of level 4 (Where you need to activate the big machine to get power). In this skip you need to perform several Inventory Jumps in complete darkness since you're OoB.
At the beginning of that level turn around and face the hole where you came through. You can Inventory Jump into that hole and go OoB that way. Then Inventory Jump (Since you need to leap longer distances) on the few solid ceiling parts in the hallway and into the wall at the end of the hallway and then you can bypass the locked gate and enter the next area.

Also in the stuff before level 4 there are a few tricks as well that you didn't do.

Sometime ago I tried to play this game again (On Windows 7 64-bit) and the game had issues all of a sudden like graphics acting weird etc. As you may know I was busy with a speedrun but I'm afraid that I can't finish it anymore because of that Sad So I guess I'll encode the segments that I've done and show it to you.

I also found quite a bit of shortcuts and stuff through the game (Mainly using the Inventory Jump) which I've never mentioned to anyone because I wanted to surprise them with my run. Right now I can't really remember them all, it's been too long ago, I would need to see the game parts again.

By the way, I really can't remember it but do you need the Saw anywhere after the drill machine? If not then you can skip it because you can squeeze yourself through the top of the fence where you need to use the Saw.

Still no consistent way for the cable glitch. I got lucky and got it on myc second attmept though... And then I accidentally let go of it too early and only got it to work again after doing 100+ attempts, restarting the game, restarting my computer, redoing the previous segment and finally by loading the save after exiting the area.

I'm aware of the inventory jump, but I can't get it to work. Do you know where I can check what version I'm running? If this is related to the version, I think I could just get an older version and redo some segments with that, there doesn't seem to be any notable differences aside from the inventory jump, seeing as the cable was glitchy in your game too.

But please, do notify me of any skips you know, inventory jump or no.

Also, what do you mean with "level 4"? The way I've thought about it, level 0 is everything up to the point where you open the metal door after getting the hammer, level 1 ends after exploding the TNT barrel, level 2 ends after the mining machine and levels 3 and 4 are whatever's after that.

The saw is needed to get the crowbar from the lake (unless you can use some other tool? I doubt it.) and the crowbar is necessary to get to some areas.

EDIT:
Quote:
1.0.1
- Keypad works after switching interact / examine buttons in settings.
- Shortcut key can be used to look at blank note.
- Jump + Tab does not increase jump height.
- Entering a map where a worm has appeared no longer result in crash.
- Cannot exit chemical storage after worm enters any longer.
- Updated BlackBox to give better information on crashes.
- Update StickAreas, hopefully solving cable bug. (apparently didn't work)
- Updated MotionBlur.
- Added crosshair as an option.
- Fixed personal task not removed properly.
- Fixed lag issue with boulder in water cave.
- OpenAL fixes, SoundBlaster X-Fi/Audigy should be more compatible now.
- Ladders less prone to let the player fall of when exiting.
- Minor level and event fixes.

Now I sure regret using the crosshair. You wouldn't happen to have an installer for 1.0?

EDIT2:
Got 1.0. Now I have three installations of Overture on my computer and I really don't know why.
The 10 segments are encoded in 2 videos. Part01, and all others combined Cheesy

Some nice little tricks you've got there. I don't mind restarting the run but honestly, I don't think I can reach that level of optimization, especially since 1.0 doesn't have a crosshair. I'll do it again, but I'll probably end up being a little behind our time.

Plus, everything I record will look like crap. Especially the beginning, the hatch in the snow is surrounded by complete whiteness.
Yeah it sucks about the graphics :/

Crosshair? Who needs a crosshair? Grin

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to the run. And I'll try to help as best as I can.

Oh also, in the snow\outside part in the beginning I do something which isn't too obvious. After a moment in that part you get a "chill", if you walk it makes you pause a little bit, that's why I make the chill happen in the air. Thought I should notify you about it Smiley
Well, 1.0 is still crashing. I went back to 1.1 to check that OoB gate skip you were talking about (flew up there with a box) and it seemed to be next to impossible. So I tried to look for an alternative, and found this.

Very nice Smiley Does it require tricky positioning or is it good\consistently doable?
Edit history:
Kotti: 2011-08-09 05:59:41 am
Let's say I can see that being annoying to do without any positioning, but not nearly as annoying as going OoB. I can get through the gate consistently, but it takes a little positioning.

What graphics card do you have? I think that's the reason to crashing and I'll see if I can get my hands on some older card.

I've got a ATI Radeon HD 5800.
As I thought. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4870, I'll try to find some card that isn't ATI HD and try how that works.
Found this when messing around with 1.1. Not sure if it's faster or easier than the cable glitch.

Nice one Smiley And that's definitely faster than the cable. Just restart till the crate is immediately positioned correctly.

And definitely check more places where that trick could be useful.
