Finally found out how to skip part of the vent area. You have to crouch at the exact right time to end up back in the vent and not be out of bounds in the next area. I haven't gotten it yet but moo did. So yeah, this is gonna be fun.
I was just looking into that same thing but only got through the ceiling and fell into the vents or out of bounds. Cool to see it actually works.

Seriously, this game needs a map viewer. Would be so much easier to figure out clips if we had a good idea of the area layouts.

The maps are simple collada files, with the scripting in an external file (.hps, they open just fine in notepad++ or something similar). I've tried both blender and 3ds max to open them but it just spits it back out.

I think I remember reading somewhere that a dude made a custom map using Maya, so that might be a viable option, I'll check it out when I can.

Also it might just me being seriously tired but I can't exactly understand your talk about barrels and clarence's disappearing door trick. Is the trigger down by the floor, where you use the barrel to jump over it or something? I need a video to understand this right now.
Videos of both clips. The second one is not nearly as difficult as I made it look.

Oh wow, that is the sexiest thing I've seen all day.

So close to a messhall skip... Getting down into the sewer on the wrong side of the bars is very easy and consistent but this was the only time I landed on the wall and had a chance to attempt jumping to the right side.

EDIT:
Found a way to do it! Got to slow down a bit after the first clip but it should still save a good chunk of time.

You might be able to use a book instead and you might be able to turn during the flying but here's the basic idea:

What exactly are you doing to get it to throw yourself out into the sewer to the right of the bars? that clip always just juts me out into the scenery through the windows (usually on the edge wall that I can walk on a little).

Don't jump. I just walk into the wall and do a quick turn around right after I get through.

Oh and it seems like the book can't be used for flying. Turning mid-flight however does work.
Are you sure there's nothing else we could use for the flight? I'm trying with the cereal box but it's so damn difficult.

I tried with a book, a pencil and a trash can cover and all of them fall through the floor the moment I tried to start flying and whatever other small items are laying around didn't seem to get me flying nor go through the floor. I don't think the cereal box is bad at all, I've been getting the skip consistently now.

Should we start looking more closely into a segmented run? I'm quickly losing interest in RTA as new "safe" or "doable" starts appear and make finishing a run even less likely than it already was.

I think a segmented run would be much better, I'd love to get something like that going.

Also I managed to get that messhall skip, this is absolutely brilliant. Now it's just a matter of getting the flight to put you exactly on the loadzone.

Also it'd be awesome if I could get into contact with you on either Skype or Steam, so the three of us can get some organized collaboration going.

Sure, my Steam ID is CorrosiveCarrot Thekotti and Skype name Thekotti. Not sure how much I'll do during next week as I'll be at ESA where I'll most likely run Black Plague. Feel free to contact me during that time as well.

EDIT:
Right, someone had stolen my Steam ID so thekotti there as well...
Wow, I tried a run with both new strats. Thought it was going to be wr but it ended up being 18:13.

Where did I go wrong.
What did you do in Residential Corridors during Clarence's monologue? I think that's the biggest change in the route, so much to be done during it now.

Pushed open the door, grabbed the blue barrel behind the door and put it in front of the infirmary door, then I clipped into the changing room to grab the brick, clipped it through and then waited for the door to unlock after the monologue.
Not getting the saw right then costs some time. Without doing any testing, I think a good route would be to place the barrel as a preparation for the final clip later on, clip to get the saw, trigger the second monologue by grabbing the saw, clip out, take the barrel to the infirmary door and then go for the brick. There's no need to open the door left from the start as we're never going to use it. Of course I haven't timed anything but I think triggering the saw monologue early may not be that harmful with the new tricks. Whatever turns out to be the fastest route, I'm fairly sure that's going to be the most difficult segment to get.

But don't you have to deal with the infected if you do it like that? With the current route the only time the infected is around is when you go out to the machine room from getting the saw.

Also I rerun the game with the new strats, 17:12. I guess I messed up elsewhere and I wasn't sure where.
After seeing how incompetent the infected is at following you after chemlab I wouldn't worry about him. Besides, if you clip through the back of the storage you'll be running past him to the brick/infirmary while his back is turned. But whatever, that section needs a bunch of testing before we can say anything for sure so I'll just shut up about it for now.
'grats to Kotti for doing a live run of Penumbra Black Plague at ESA (raising money for Doctors Without Border, still got until Saturday to donate). Hopefully it'll generate a little more interest in running this game, there's lots more to be discovered.
friction is a drag
Kotti gave me a quick cliptutorial at ESA, which made me even more interested in this. Got the current route down I think, just practicing the clips to get good. Would love to see a segmented project started.
Totally rad
Already mentioned this to Kotti at ESA, but I would absolutely love to take part in doing a segmented run. I'm mainly an HPL2 runner, but have messed around plenty in HPL1, so I'm sure I could contribute to making the run.
Awesome, I'm glad this game's appearance at ESA has done a little to boost the interest in running this game. I made a timesheet a week or so ago based on my times from the 17:46 run which should be a nice comparison if the segmented thing gets going. If anyone wants to make something a little nicer looking than this feel free, the order of the levels needs a little work though since there's backtracking to consider.
Wow, a bunch of people getting interested in this Smiley

I wrote down a rough route, mostly out of memory. I most likely got some of the autosaves wrong but that shouldn't matter too much, if I missed some we can use those as well and we can skip using some saves if they don't help. Feel free to comment, point out stupid mistakes and point out minor tricks that are missing.

Still got a few things we have to figure out before starting. Since HPL doesn't allow demo recordings or other fun stuff like that, we need to agree on some consistent recording settings and figure out how we want to deal with segment breaks and area transitions. Loading saves from the menu up to 30 times during the video doesn't really fit the definition of a nice looking run if you ask me.

For video settings I shamelessly suggest the same exact thing I've been using since forever, 1280x720 for resolution, 2.0 for brightness, English subtitles on, crosshair and flashing items on, personal notes off and these advanced graphical settings. Record with Fraps at 60fps if possible. As for audio levels, I don't think we can get the perfect balance but as long as the audio is well audible and doesn't crack we can probably improve things when editing things together.

Eh, I guess that rules me out for any recordings; not unless I can get the £800+ I need for my new PC. Ah well, do you play in fullscreen or windowed at that resolution?
What can you record/run at? The one setting I'd rather not drop at all is resolution. I play in a window as HPL has some issues with brightness in full screen.
