What games out there on the PC, freeware or otherwise, are some that support some manner of self contained  "record your replay/playthroughs" option and/or mode?  I'm positive there's at least a couple out there, and emulators have managed this for awhile now, but I'm drawing blanks on concrete examples.I ask this in order to perhaps convince an indy RPG nearing final developments that such a feature would be very handy somewhere down the line for people archiving their best playthroughs while keeping file sizes down, sharing adventures with the community, Let's Play thread fodder, and so on.I appreciate any and all help.www.heroicfantasygames.com    the game in question along with awesome trailer.

Games that have demo recording only for multi player games(also their mods):
*Return to castle Wolfenstein[/list]
Thread title:
You mean games that automatically record demos? In that case I only know one series, Bungie's Marathon series. "Film" files are automatically recorded each time you play and can be saved at your own will. The bad thing about Marathon is that the only one of the original games is out for PC, Marathon 2: Durandal. The games are freeware and can be download at your own will.
TIOLET!
Good demo/replay recorders are too rare these days. Last time I saw one was in HL2.
Doom
Quake
Half-Life
Return to castle Wolfenstein (doesn't work for single-player)
Daikatana (I think)
Serious Sam
Driver
Call of Duty
Counter-Strike
City of Heroes
Starcraft
Warcraft 3
Unreal Tournament
Portal

Can't think of more.

Descent
Now it's Sui^^
- Soldier of Fortune
as I remember it was:
/record x
and
/demomap x

- most of games using id Tech 4 engine have record (but it's bugged :-\)
- Hexen 2 (record need to be started before starting a game)
- probably all games using Source Engine (Half-Life 2 [+EP1, +EP2, +Lost Coast], Portal, Left 4 Dead)
Dragon Power Supreme
Marble Blast Gold , needs to be done before the level is started.
Sins of a Solar Empire as well. I experimented with speedrunning the smallest map against the easiest computer, and it's like watching paint dry. It autosaves demos of all games though.

You can speed up the game, dunno what the hotkey is off the top of my head.  I'd hope that it doesn't speed up any in-game timer as well, but then that would probably be wanting my pie and eating it too.
The settings I had it on made it far too simple for a legitimate submission. As I had it, it was just build capital ship factory, build military research base, build planet killer cap ship, research planet killer ships, build planet killer ships, kill enemy planet. Maybe the smallest map against the hardest computer will be more interesting, I'll play around with that.
Runs: FCP, FC3, XWA, HD1-2, KotOR1-2
Star Wars X-Wing Alliance has a film room if you install the latest update.

Trackmania Nations and TN Forever can record your driving as well. The other games in the series can surely do the same.

IIRC, Test Drive Unlimited replays your last lap(s) -- it should have a "Save replay" feature as well.

Then you can count most of the racing games including Need for Speed.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
This is a cool topic, I'm not sure why no one thought of the idea sooner. I'll sticky this topic if someone is willing to maintain a list in the first post.
All games and game mods based on Half-Life.

And isn't there a record function in Halo 3 (I know, it's not PC)?

Heh, here and there now even I can manage some nifty stuff around here even if tangentially!  I'm also fine with updating the list as people tell me stuff..just keep me on my toes with posts and PM's folks.
Sry getter77 I did it faster!  Grin

Looking at engines it is hard to say which games did not remove the demo recording if the engine had one already! Maybe I should just list game engines that have demo recording? Otherwise ppl should confirm which games really have demo recording!
Because some of them have long lists. Like unreal engine which has demo recording capabilities! - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games
Not every game running on an engine capable of demo recording does actually support it or it doesn't work properly.

The best way would be probably to google it.

Here's a list of games supported in Seismovision demo player:

No problem!  You've done it much fancier and indepth than I would've.  You can check the forum topic in the website where I've at least got them considering it in part, down the line, with one part, as a start...

(I so see the makings of a badass SDA run with this game considering the PC RPG folk here  Grin  )

I mentioned Descent before; both Descent and Descent 2 have this feature, and they share the same engine (though I can't find a decent name for it... Portal Rendering System?)

I think Descent3 also supports demo recording but it has a vastly different engine called Fusion. It's also a crap game.
Medal of Honor Allied Assault doesn't have a demo function, even if it's using the Q3 engine.
Thanks!
I hope people will keep informing!

That's weird. How come Seismovision supports it ?

Maybe because of this: http://forums.gamespace.net.au/tutorial_enable_console_and_record-t16984.html

TIOLET!
I think it would be good if the list covered which games have a good enough demo recorder to be used for runs intended for SDA. A lot of games/game engines have a demo recorder, but some produce demos of such "bad quality" they can't be used for recording SDA content.

Edit: A few examples of games where demo recorder can't be used.

Deus Ex: Various issues, ask dex for a detailed list Wink
All games based on Doom 3 engine: Issues vary from game to game, but common things are graphical glitches such as certain consoles not being rendered etc.
