What are the rules with pausing in the middle of a run?
If there arn't any, what do people think they should be? Cause long runs really take their toll after a while...
Thread title:
Eternal Understudy
It depends on how you mean. Do you mean pausing for a split second to see what's coming up, like in the Sonic Advance 2 run? Or pausing for, like 10 minutes to rest?

You mean pausing in the run or just pause and go do something else and come back.

Beat me to it
I was thinking along the lines of a break. Probably not 10 minutes but maybe 5 or something, just to wipe the sweat from your hands, get a drink, take your eyes from the screen for a while...
Eternal Understudy
Perhaps 20 seconds to get comfortable again, but no more than that.

When I did my Legend of Mana runs, I paused only to change tapes (during this time, I did anything I needed).  It keeps the flow of the game going if you don't pause.  Didn't the original MMX8 run have a bunch of pauses in it?  Looked kinda stupid, especially since they segmented it.

That's my policy.  Keep food and drink close at hand, unless it's a game you can't do that in.  Stupid Mega Man 7. >_>
Speed is the key.
Maybe you could pause for as long as you wanted if you just cut the pause out?
Wouldn't that violate some kind of rule?
Speed is the key.
I guess so.  Roll Eyes
Now a hit show on the CW
The rules say it's ok to pause a run to switch tapes. Theoretically you could take a break at that point for as long as you want without anyone being able to tell how long you were paused (unless it's a game with a timer that tracks during pauses). But other than that, I don't think there's any specific rules about it. If a game is so long that you would need to take a break in the middle of it, you should probably segment that game anyway (TSA is insane).
Speed is the key.
In the 120 star run of SM64 (if anyone watched it) the player pauses the game at least one time, but just for like 3 seconds. Wonder if he cut it there?
MGS for PS1 forever.
Unless it's pausing to switch tapes, I don't think it should be allowed if it is. What's the point of single-segment if you pause a bunch of times?
The point of a single segment run is that if you screw up, you have to do the entire run over again, in stead of a segment of a couple of minutes. Pausing during a single segment run for a break does not change that fact.
Fucking Weeaboo
Yeah, pausing during single segments is ok as long as you can prove that you didn't unpause and do something sneaky when the tapes weren't going.

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me at all if pausing for 20-so minutes in a run would be prefectly allowed.

The only thing everyone is missing is that pause time probably counts.

Oh, and single segment runs are to show your endurance in the game, not just "you screw up, you have to start all over again"; physical and mental endurance is what's needed. Multi segment is mostly so you can cut the time as much as you can.
TIOLET!
When I was planning my Doom 3 single segment run (still in the making) I asked Radix about pausing. If the game has a built-in timer which include the paused time in the total completion time then you're screwed. However, if you just have to visit the toilet or something a 3-5 minute pause is fine (doesn't apply for the first example), at least that was what I was told then.
Hmm, another example I can think of. If I recall correctly, one of the Metroid Fusion runs has a long pause in it for nearly a minute. I think it's one of Wassup Dawg's runs and he pauses in the room with the cooling unit in Sector 3.

I don't see why pausing would be against the rule. As others have stated, it's only a disadvantage to the player if the game is being tracked in real time.

Indeed.  I can attest to that, having done 3 single session Legend of Mana runs, one of which is over 3 hrs.  Though TSA still owns the site's single session record with the OOT speedrun.

(I WILL P0WN IT ONE DAY.  DAMN YOU TSA!)
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!

Great, you can start by single-segmenting GTA: San Andread 100%. It'll take almost a week to do, non-stop. So be sure to have at least 400 cups of coffee, and caffine pills at hand. Wink

Sorry tri hex, but I don't own any GTA games, nor have played any.  I will sometime do a Legend of Mana 100% run which is only about...10 hrs or so I figure.

And I WILL tape it. ^^

(Just not submit it.)
