None of those threads really seem to mention anything we didn't already know from what I can tell. The 100% definition has already been decided for a long time:

Paper Mario: all badges, super blocks

For your other question, I don't believe anyone here has posted any practice videos.

why was it decided to not have star pieces part of 100%? i thought they were tracked but i could be wrong i guess.
1-Up!
IIRC, aren't they tracked similar to currency?  As in it only shows how many you currently have?
My name is unpronounceable
IIRC, you need to get all of the star pieces to get all the badges that what's-his-name trades for them, making it a moot point.  I also don't think the game ever actually tells you how many there are total.

This. Getting all Star Pieces is required to get all badges, so it's blanketed by the All Badge requirement. Similar to how things like all Chuck Quizmo quizzes and all Letter Trading quests are implied requirements as well.

I think that's why they were excluded in The Thousand Year Door. The badges you can buy with them from Dazzle you can also get elsewhere, therefore they're basically just currency. Continuing the recent trend, that is of course IIRC. Tongue

Man, 100% runs of this game and TTYD would be insane to actually pull off.

Also, aren't the Quizmo quizzes randomly placed? Or are they at a specific location after you beat a certain chapter? I forget, it's been so long since I played this game.
My name is unpronounceable
Quizmo will always appear in the same spots, he just won't be there all the time.  So you'd have to luck manip his appearance in a given location.  I think going in and out of the area works fine, but in the speedrun you'd have to do better than that.  After you beat a chapter, he will start asking new questions.
So...is anybody actually working on this, or even have any kind of route planned out?
@_@
It seems like Raiker Z was working on it, but he's either been busy or just hasn't been around lately. There is probably some semblance of a plan spread out through these pages but nothing really concrete.
Warning: a bit tl;dr, but still useful for planning.

Hello, peeps. I have been casually playing Paper Mario for hundred-percent completion (or at least SDA's current definition of it) and I played in such a way that I saved just enough coins to get all 3 star pieces from Chet Rippo in one fell swoop, but didn't bother saving up to get most of Rowf's badges. While I'm fairly certain that I could've made less purchases (e.g., a couple of extra life shrooms at 50 coins apiece), I probably still wouldn't have had nearly enough to buy all of Rowf's badges. So I spent a couple hours just making lots of money selling Tayce T.'s recipes (I've found sweet shrooms to be the most efficient and profitable to make and sell, though making jelly candies with the few jammin jellies available made the process a little faster), and if I had to guess I probably had to grind at least 1200 coins to buy all of Rowf's badges (I think I had only bought multibounce and damage dodge before this rigmarole).

With that all said, there's no way in hell this kind of crap should be in a 100% speedrun, yet it is only narrowly avoidable, unless a runner does the following:

1. Get the money money badge ASAP (I believe it costs 25 star pieces like attack plus, so it's tough to say which one should take priority).

2. Get Merlee's luck-enhancing spell as often as necessary, then luck-manipulate for doubled coin drops while avoiding exp. doubling to maintain Danger Mario status.

3. Pick up items that you would normally skip, then sell everything you have no intention of using (esp. rare stuff like jammin jellies and ultra shrooms, and probably whacka bumps, since Link's Awakening has proven that being ethical costs time). If there's time, maybe take some of the items to Tayce T. and then sell them (e.g., you might want to pick a strange leaf for every whacka bump you gather, or a cake mix for every jammin jelly). I wouldn't bother with luck manipulating the lil' oinks for ultra shrooms or jellies though.

4. Don't bother with the Jump Attack or Smash Attack games; you will probably lose a lot of money in there unless the Random Number Gods decide to be charitable. Save this sort of luck manipulation for a TAS unless you don't mind doing a lot of segmenting here.

5. You may have noticed that I said I needed to get over 1000 coins to get Rowf's badges; you will definitely have to take multiple trips to Rowf's shop if you want to get everything efficiently.

6. Put off getting Rip Cheato's stuff for as long as possible, and wait until after chapter 7 when you will have gotten as many coins and bought as many Rowf badges as you possibly could before heading to Star Haven. Don't under any circumstances do anything other than get all three star pieces at once, or the third one will be lost forever. When Chet Rippo says his goods won't be available if you don't buy them immediately, he means it. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LostForever

One more thing: I have found that going between both of the main areas of Koopa Village and Goomba Village, using the blue sewer pipes, will guarantee that Chuck Quizmo will nearly always show up at least once in one of those three areas each time you cycle through them. I recommend not even bothering with the pipe to Dry Dry Outpost.

Additional coin discussion from the beginning of the thread:
Quote:
* COINS *

You will need over 2300 coins to get all the badges (most of that is for Rowf's badge shop and Rip Cheato).

- Whacka Bumps (there are 8) sell for 64 coins each at the Mushroom Grocery.
- Jammin' Jellies and Ultra Shrooms sell for 50 coins each, but Jelly Supers and Maple Ultras sell for 100 coins each (and you will collect many Super Shrooms/Maple Syrups along the way).
- You can earn over 900 coins in the Silver Card game.  But, that's more TAS territory....
- Be sure to steal some coins from Kent C. Koopa. [My note: if we're not fighting him then this probably doesn't apply]
- Refund badge earns 75% of the normal selling price of an item, so if you're using some good stuff, equip this.
- Pay-Off badge earns you 1 coins for each 2 HP damage done to Mario.  This bonus is added before Money Money doubling (a good thing!).  And the Anti Guy in Shy Guy's Toybox gives coins from this, too!
- If you're deperate, buy Volt Shrooms, cook them up, and sell them for a 5-coin profit each.

I think we had also mentioned that one way to get Chuck to appear was to go to Goomba village and go back and forth between the village area and the forest where Mario fell from the castle at the beginning of the game. Going to that area counts as leaving and re-entering the village. It may be faster than using the pipes. Even if you were using the pipes, you'd probably be better off just going in and out of Koopa Village that way instead of switching between the two, but I haven't tried any of this out myself.
You could also walk around the desert with money money and bump attack but that might not be feasable

Walking through the first 21 squares (7 by 7 grid) I have gotten about 160 coins counting dried fruits
I went down to the bottom on the outpost side then i went all the way up to the left all the way down to the left up all the way
Y=land walked on
X= land didn't walk on

Sorry for Double Post
Or you could go to the futhest screen to the bottom from the outpost with six bandits defeat them go three screens off ( i checked) and repeat

A good 100% run would probably be 61/2 to 7 hours
Qwerty funny funny my plans are closer to 5 hours (and early testing is coming off A LOT faster then I thought (though I'm not changing my hope because the latter is more time consuming)

Also the best money making by far in terms of speed is of course luck manipulating the stupid jumping game (haha reset hell) I HAVE tested this, and it took me 320 tries and I made 500 coins (323 resets, I rounded) since 500+ is what I'd like for any hope of the final run (that I still need a capture card for -.-) I estimate 5 or so segments to do them and get the badges, by the way each segment in theory lasts 3 minutes (this part isnt precise)

Now for our cutsie little Chuck Jerk I'm not 100% but I'm about 90% sure you need to be TWO screens from where he normally spawns to get the random chance at him. Which means hopping into the little area where Mario first lands wont work (but I may be wrong) Regardless luck manipulating him from saves/moving through towns to other saves is probably faster in the long run, so I'll keep to that.

Lastly for the random space of time I've been gone, I accidentally got absorbed into a 8 day run of Pikmin 2 for fun Smiley day 6 has been terrible so far, but I randomly came to look at the forums here and look what I found Paper mario is on first page again! I plan to start again, I believe I (cheated) through the Tubba Blubba fight *basically used a save I will ignore in the real run, though maybe not* because a 6.67% chance at tubba giving me 9 damage and me getting away is a pain (especially considering all the things I can mess up on en route and in fights) and figuring out what my notes mean is gonna take me a bit, Sorry I have a plan through half of the Flower Fields, but I can barely descipher it, let alone send it to everyone attempting it.
Something else I forgot to mention the game does show the maximum amount of star pieces on the Bullitin Board at Mario's House Along with the maximum badges, maximum recipes, and your Quizzes (Though it doesn't tell you the maximum) Also it has power bounces (again doesnt show max) Coins earned, battles, your first strikes, and enemies first strikes.
Note: there are 80 badges (including all duplicates), 50 recipes (though that's not something we need to worry about), and 160 star pieces (64 of which come from Chuck Quizmo).
Yeah this would be an awesome run (I wish I wasn't too lazy to plan things out like that)
If I had a capture card (though there is one somewhere on this forum I need to look for again) I would put more effort into this, but as it is now, its just a fun little (haha ok not so little) project for me to plan while I wait untill I get a card, Im fairly certain once I do get one it wont take me to long to get all the parts, some of them I've done in one try with very few minor mistakes (but of course others I've "cheated" by saving where I dont plan to. Though for the Tubba Blubba part I am considering Saving right after the ghosts help me (Like a 40 second segment) Just because it is so much easier to 1. Cut out his howl for food, and 2. I sometimes forget that the Level up is badge points, not fp (It does help alot to not have to remember to take off speedy spin or  the lucky badge) It could still take awhile with the capture card, but Id have more incentive to try to get a few segments done per day. As it stands right now Im at 2:07 Just before the Big Lantern Ghost, I have 36 World Star Pieces and 2 Quiz Pieces for 38 Star Pieces, and 25 Badges. I Havent done much of the chain letter (After Shy guy Toybox I will) And I'm only at the luigi Mission for Koopa Koot (Luckily I go by there for the Dictionary Star Piece)
Just a few things to add.

I HATE SHY GUYS WITH ALL MY SOUL! - To explain this, General Guy of course NEVER MISSED so it took me 30 tries to finally beat him (Despite everything being ridiculously easy up to then) And then along with the peach segment comes this part: I need to scare 2 shy guys (calculator and flour) who RUN AWAY so that annoys me and then Anti-Guy WHO REFUSES TO DO THE ATTACK I CAN BLOCK FOR 9 DAMAGE FIRST. So ya, lucky I'm saving where I dont plan to just in case ppl (anti guy) decide to be jerks.

At the moment I'm Half an hour behind the Any% Smiley so I'm glad I'm doing pretty well, but Plotting now I'm thinking Ill have used 40-45 of my 80 extra minutes by the time I enter chapter 6, which means sadly unless I can totally cheap shot a few things I'll probably end in 5 hours to 5.5 hour range, sigh Tongue
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Well.  A 100% run has been awaited for quite some time.  And from what I've been reading, there's no longer a time limit for Speed Runs, which is a big plus, since it opens up a lot of games and their 100% Counterparts. :3

But, wow.  You're that far into the 100% run and only 30 minutes behind the any% run?  That's not an easy feat.

I look forward to seeing the finished product no matter how long the run is. :3
Heres the fun part Smiley This is only a TEST, there are alot of flaws with my run that I'm allowing because I just want to know what time I can beat. Hopefully when I do it for real and my standards are a bit less lenient I can shave time off and be even more close to the any%.
And small fun update, I still hate Anti GUy who only does anti performance first i swear... but because of all the repetition i can now do the peach segment without trouble (I still hesitate at the guards, but not to badly) and can get both shy guys I need before they have time to run away (I still miss, but I got better at not letting them run away) I had to redo the segment, because a new plan for anti guy came to me, and I saved 3 fp in the fight with him. Since his fight sets me up in hp for every fight until lava pirahna saving fp was sorta necessary. Hopefully this weekend I get through Lavalava Island and I can finally restart Flower Fields (NOT looking forward to that) If your wondering why I chose there to do the speed test... Look at the powerup blocks You'll find the one I'm dreading.
That sounds like a lot of fun. How much BP are you planning to have because I had a Bowser strategy but it takes a little more BP than might be necessary.
I was thinking 9-12 bp, FP is more the concern and hp is useless when you always want to fight bosses around 1 hp
