hey hey hey!!
i'll figure something out =P i can always manipulate some amayzee dayzees for some extra coins if i'm desperate (which i'm more than sure i will be eventually...) i was thinking that i already have to give a letter to the guy in the boo mansion shop, i might as well sell some things while i'm there since some things sell higher there.
hey hey hey!!
well i was looking through my route and it seems that i forgot to give kolorado the artifact for the star piece, so i had to change up the route a little bit.  once i go back and collect the other star pieces from mt. rugged/dry dry desert/dry dry outpost then i will get the letter for goompapa where kolorado was camping.

Segment 17
----------

-peach/twink (get power rush badge)
-as Mario, go down, left, down, left and hit lone block 10 times for super shroom (maybe 100 depending on time and amount of money for ultra shroom)
-give kolorado the artifact and the letter for 2 star pieces
-on way back, get wacka’s bump and super block (hit metal block)
-save next to train

EDIT: Also changed up segments 20 and 21 and added 22.

Segment 20
----------

-right twice
-left once
-left once
-left 3 times (collect magical seed)
-right once
-collect hp plus badge and backtrack the exact same way
-left twice
-right once
-right twice
-collect fp plus badge and backtrack the exact same way
-left once
-save at boo’s mansion

Segment 21
----------

-climb stairs, get record and play for boo
-jump on couch and put weight on chandelier
-get super boots, get star piece in that same room
-go normally and get star piece in crates in bookcase room
-when leaving bookcase room, get star piece next to clock
-go and get star piece next to couch and use couch to elevate floors
-go into record room (second door) spin jump in middle and get another star piece
-get bow, go talk to store keeper (franky) and give him letter/sell whatever necessary
-save outside of mansion

Segment 22
----------

-spin jump for star piece right next to the gate
-go forwards in gusty gulch and get the letter and star piece on the way to tubba’s castle
-NOTE: also get any coins that you see on the path

Awesome, Paper Mario is being discussed again. I'd love to see a 100% run or SS of this game. Too bad Floogal, the mastermind behind this game, seems to have disapeared...
@_@
Nah, he's still around. I've spotted him in a couple other planning threads and we were both somewhat engaging in a Kirby Superstar thread not too long ago. I'm sure he's still lurking in the shadows somewhere.

This truly is a beast of a run though, lots of things to collect and lots of sidequests to do. It'll be a long one that'll require a lot of advanced planning to be done efficiently. General planning tips I used when I was planning stuff is to basically make a master list of all the things you need to do/get in each area, as well as listing things like money required for them and all of that. See when the most convenient time would be for you to complete each one and plan accordingly. For example if you have a Favor to do, two star pieces, and two badges to get in one particular area, see if you can fit those in whenever you're already near or in the area. If you can't get it the first time through, see when you're passing near that area again later on in the game. It's not necessarily how early you get everything or that you get everything as soon as it's available, what matters is spending the least amount of extra time sidetracking to get these things. Try to avoid setting up "collection segments" if at all possible. Sometimes this can't be avoided though, as I get the feeling is going to be the case with a few things here. However, you'll have the pipes in the sewer at your disposal making going to each area again a less time-consuming task so it's not too big of a deal.

Battles will also require their own planning, don't forget about them. Preemptively I'd recommend upgrading Bow as quickly as possible, a 10-damage Fan Smack could help Mario out in a lot of situations. Not to mention it's fairly quick too. Not Shell Shot quick, but still relatively less time-consuming than other things you could be doing. Don't just use the battle strategies from my run, as maybe there are other partner and attack combinations that could be quicker since you're getting all badges and upgrades.  Also if you end up farming Amayzee Dayzees for money, you'll be at a higher level giving you more FP/BP to use.

If I didn't have classes breathing down my neck I could be of more help but I honestly just have a lot of other things to worry about right now. As it is I'm just spouting off ideas as they come to mind.

hey hey hey!!
i need help choosing what upgrades to do. i was thinking upgrading like my fp to 15, then my badges the rest after that because i can put fp plus's on.  or would that just be a waste of bp?  and i'm going to redo the boss fights and enemies later, i'm just working on the route right now. it's hard to know what kind of badges i will have because they show up at different times in rowf's badge shop.

EDIT: are there any places where i can pick up dried pasta without having to buy it in the shop in dry dry outpost?  i need it for one of the koopa koot favors where i have to cook dried pasta and a koopa leaf together.
@_@
To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if the Danger Mario strategy ended up being the fastest strategy for boss fights in this run too. The only difference is the partners can do more damage and you may be able to stack some more attack-boosting badges, meaning less charging and whatnot. Theoretically there should be no difference between picking an FP upgrade and picking a BP upgrade then equipping FP Plus. You either gain 5 HP or Gain 3 BP, Spend 3 BP to Equip badge, then gain 5 FP. In practice however, it may be more versatile to do as you said and use the FP plus badges. That way if you find in a battle that you don't need as much FP but equipping one extra badge might be useful you can switch out 5 FP for an extra badge. I don't know if that situation will ever come up, but it should be worth considering. This run is still in its very early planning stages.

Iirc Dry Dry Outpost is the ONLY place you can acquire Dried Pasta. You can replace the Koopa Leaf ingredient with a Mystery? and still got a Koopasta (again iirc) but the Dried Pasta is absolutely necessary.

hey hey hey!!
What i am thinking about right now is what places i'm going to have to go back and get star pieces under panels.  since all them are on the way in chapter 3 and 4, i will just collect those ones right away.  Once i get the ultra hammer, i will go back to goomba village and dry dry desert and just hit them with the hammer.  the hammer is a lot easier and a little bit faster than spin jumping.

and for the koopasta, i think it's easier to use the koopa leaf than the mystery thing cause its right on the way at the beginning of the run, that's why i collect 2 koopa leaves.

EDIT: I'm going to change the route slightly, when i go to merluvlees, i might buy some badges that will later help me out (like money money). but the problem is that i don't have much bp to work with at that point in the game.  So basically what i'm asking is which badges should i buy when i visit merluvlee's.  this will be like the only trip until a lot later in the game, so i have to buy wisely, money money is definitely a must.
I've been quite busy lately, but things are starting to lighten up, so I can start helping with the planning a bit.

pryomaniac: I would recommend you put a link in your signature to the first post containing your strategies/plans.  Then, do what I did here -- put them in spoilers so that they don't stretch the pages.  If it won't all fit in your allotted posts, put a link to the next post at the end out of the spoilers.

I found these notes I made -- they list what things are "no-brainers" to collect.  For example, the Happy Heart badge on Raphael's tree.  There's no reason to collect it at any other point than the one time we're forced to climb the tree, so don't bother to include it in our planning-optimization problem.  Similarly, collecting & delivering the letter to the Shiver City mayor is no issue at all -- collect it on the forced visit back to him, and deliver it right after getting the bucket/scarf.

Random thoughts:
- be sure to pick up Money Money badge before Chapter 5 (for forced random enemy fights)

- don't have Peach pick up badges -- fastest to have Mario pick them up himself at the end of the game.  It might be worth it for her to deposit the Jammin' Jelly, though.

- explore desert later on (level 9+), can use First/Spin/Bump Attack & Money Money badges to clean up quickly.

- Don't use a Lemon Candy -- fight Anti Guy.  Use Pay-Off badge for coins, as well.

- give Kolorado the artifact at pretty much anytime (before trading for last seed to Flower Fields..?)  He's got some funny text if you keep refusing to give it to him until after he returns home late in the game:
"Mario, I'm a grown Koopa here,
begging you on my knees
for your generosity.
I must have that artifact!
I can't stop thinking of it!"
Also, I think you can deliver his letter to him while he's lying dazed in the volacno, and Parakarry says a slightly different line.

- For battling, while the any% strat is the fastest, it may be best to do the original item+Power Bomb combo that I used frequently in the original draft of the plan.  It is slower, but you earn star points (extra BP for Money Money, Bump Attack, Power Plus, etc.) & get money from using the battle item & Refund badge.

For coins, I think it would be easier to just forget about abusing Jump Attack or Li'l Oinks.  The main standard is buying Volt Shrooms, cooking them, and selling the Hot Shrooms -- someone should time this, but I think that optimally it equals about one coin every 3 or 4 seconds.  That's the time to beat for any detours.  Suggestions:
- Kill Whacka, and sell all his bumps for 512 coins (Shroom Grocery) or 400 coins (Harry's Shop).
- Collect all 4 Jammin' Jellies & 3 Ultra Shrooms -- using Super Shrooms & Maple Syrups found all over the place, sell the 4 Jelly Supers & 3 Maple Ultras for 700 coins.
- Smash Attack -- more skill-based & reasonable than Jump Attack.  You get 1 coin per 0.1 left on the clock, so a good run with 10/30 seconds remaining would give 100 - costToPlay = 90 coins for a ...1 minute detour?
- Pay-off, Money Money, Refund, and P-Up, D-Down ... enter battle, constantly heal Mario with mushrooms (earning coins from Refund) until taking about 25 damage, then end battle.  I believe that you can't get more than about 30 coins from a single battle.  The HP-Plus badges might be needed here.
- Considering both the "level" & "bonus coins" stats of regular enemies, it seems that Bandits are best for farming.  As early as level 9, you can slap on the First/Spin/Bump Attack badge & blast through everything in the desert.  With Money Money also equipped, Bandits will drop 2 to 6 coins apiece.  Leave & reenter the desert to respawn them.  Pokeys will only drop 0 to 2 coins, but the Dried Fruit will sell for 20 coins apiece at the Shroom Grocery.
- I really hope that there's a hidden secret recipe, like a Red Berry and a Stone Cap makes a Jelly Ultra.  Hey, we can hope?
hey hey hey!!
Well, i changed some stuff from my old routes, so i'll just re-post my slightly newer routes onto here.  i'm currently at tubba blubba's castle, but won't move on until i change some of the route even more.  when you say to not explore the desert, do you mean i should wait and get the badges and super block and stuff?

Yes, there are 11 letters that give you star pieces, and a series of chain letters (like 14 or 15) that rewards you with the Lucky Day badge at the end.
heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh
100% is all badges and all star pieces. Which in turn require the old koopa's favours, the (chain) letters, all the quiz things to be finished, and allot of random side quests. And probably more things that I don't remember ATM.

hey hey hey!!
like floogal said, i'm going to wait unil i go back to dry dry desert and outpost, etc. to get star pieces to get the badges and super block and things like that.  So i can battle a lot of people and i will have the money money and stuff so it will get me a lot more coins to just wait to collect those items later.  i haven't gotten to that point in the run yet, so i'm not going to change the route up just yet.

EDIT: Thank you so much floogal for all the locations for eveything up there! that really helps because i've been on the computer planning everything, but now i'm just printing it out and going to plan on the actually n64! That will help a lot because i have been making a lot of stupid mistakes.
hey hey hey!!
alright, i replayed to where i am with the route change and i don't have nearly enough coins to buy all of the rowf's badges i wanted to.  I only got through 3 badges before i only had 59 coins left.  is there anything that's on the way that can raise my coin count before i get to the first koopa koot segment?  i might also have to manipulate chuck a couple of times because i want to have 21 star pieces before i go to merlow.  i want to be able to buy money money and the pay off badge.

In dry dry desert, i'm going to skip all of the badges except for runaway pay badge but still get the super block, lime, and life shroom.  i need the life shroom either way, but i chose to get the super block in the oasis because i don't have power bomb for one of the chomp fights, so i need to have parakarry and bombette up before the end of the dry dry ruins.  so that is what's going on right now, i'm not proceeding with the route until i can get all of the coins and other inconveniences dealt with.
You're welcome, pyromaniac.  It really didn't take much time at all -- I just went through the lists on the rpgclassics website, and quickly decided if it was non-trivial on when to pick it up.  Surprisingly, over half of the game's stuff is "along the way".  There's still enough remaining stuff to drive us all crazy, of course.

I see you're starting to realize the coin shortage issue.  I'm really surprised, as I never had such issues while playing normally -- I could always buy all of Rowf's stuff easily after each chapter (and I never made use of Refund, Pay-Off, and Money Money).  Does most of your money really come from fighting?

Anyways, don't worry too much about buying all of Rowf's stuff at once.  He's got his complete stock by Chapter 6, which gives us essentially a bonus chapter to come up with money to buy his remaining wares.  A better goal would be to have at least 640 coins at the end of Chapter 7, so that you can get all of Rip Cheato's goods in one fowl swoop the only time the game "forces" you to walk right past him.

One thing that I'd like someone to research:

What is the trigger for the Master Poet to give you the Lyrics?

Is it after talking to the composer for the first time?  Do you have to talk to the poet first, then the composer, then the poet will give you the lyrics?  Or is it simply after a certain chapter/event?

I'd gladly check, but who is Master Poet/what lyrics? (haven't played in ages)

hey hey hey!!
you have to talk to the poet inside of club, then take the lyrics to the  composer in dry dry outpost, then take the melody back to the poet for attack fx d badge.  Is that the right thing your talking about?

EDIT: if that's what you are talking about, i know the perfect time to do that.  right after chapter 5, i go back to dry dry outpost anyway to get all the collectables, so right when i get off the whale, go to the poet, go down into sewers, talk to koopa koot and do all of the favors (assuming i've done them all so far) because they are quite easy after chapter 5.  anywho, just go to dry dry desert and collect everything and talk to composer.  take train to toad town (do hammer game) and go back into sewers, collect everything in goomba village, troopa's playground, etc.  then on the way back, just go into the club and give the melody to poet, then proceed to flower fields.  anything that needs improvement, just tell me.

This is segments 23-28.  i don't collect the fp plus badge until this segment because it's slightly faster than collecting it earlier like i did. i changed it already in the route.  i'm going to do the one koopa koot favor now with the toad town news, because it's right next to merlons and i need to get a badge in there anyway.  after that, i'm not going to do another favor until after chapter 5 because one of the favors involves going to boo's mansion, and to open up that sewer pipe, there is another super block. i can't get it until i get the red stone thing from lavalava island, so that's what's going on right now.

EDIT: i think i'm just going to finish this chapter's set of koopa koot favors because i need to claim a couple items for cooking and i don't have enough room in my items, so i'm just going get rid of life shroom and nutty cake.  it will give me just enough room for koopa leaf and cake mix.

Regarding getting the lyrics from the poet:

The issue isn't simply when to get them from him -- it's what you need to do to get him to give them to you.  I seem to recall (in an earlier game session) talking to him immediately after Chapter 1, and he didn't give me the lyrics.  This means that there's something you have to do.  Whether it means we have to talk to the composer during Chapter 2, or talk to the poet in Chapter 1 (followed by the composer in Chapter 2), followed by a another trip to the poet to get the actual lyrics.  A minor thing which will cost a lot of time if we're misinformed.

Anyways, unless the Quick Change badge is actually useful for something, I would recommend waiting until Chapter 7 to pick it up (as you're forced to enter Merlon's hut then).

Also, if you're running out of room, consider depositing/selling your excess goods with Harry when you're forced to visit him anyways to unlock his vault.  Also consider withdrawing items to cook for Koopa Koot at this point (Kooky Cookie & Koopasta), since you'll soon be forced to visit Tayce T. anyways.  Note that an alternate Kooky Cookie recipe is Cake Mix + Maple Syrup (which are found all over the place), so you avoid lugging about an additional Koopa Leaf if necessary.

In segment 14, why aren't you picking up the Red Jar?  Someone should test if buying shroom->hammer->pasta->hammer->shroom or hammer->pasta->hammer->shroom->hammer would get us both Sheek's audience & the Red Jar at once, saving us a purchase (5 instead of 6).  Even if we do need to buy 6 items, this means that we never need to visit this shop more than once (as we'll have the Dried Pasta needed for Koopa Koot's Koopasta).

hey hey hey!!
oh, in case you are wondering, i was going to do that, but i didn't know if i could buy the red jar yet.  i thought you had to activate the favor first before you could get it.  i don't know what sheek's audience is.  i got the merlon badge then because i have to rest and read the board anyway (i rest because i want to be able to farm some coins in this segment).what do you think i should do for that segment then floogal? should i do this:

-activate koopa koot favor, rest at inn, read sign for koopa koot, put some items in the other shop, then do shy guy's toy box and lavalava island, then come back and finish the koopa koot favors

and to activate the poet, i think you have to talk to the diva first.  i was playing around with it and this is what i did to activate it, talk to the poet, exit the club and leave area, go back into area and club and talk to him again. he gives you lyrics

so what i proposed to do is in my first koopa koot segment, i'll talk to him because i go into that area anyway.  then talk to him again when getting off of whale after chapter 5, then do the dry dry outpost clean-up and talk to melodist (mt. rugged, dry dry desert).  then go back into sewers and clean up goomba village (jr. troopa's playground, goomba road, etc.) then on the way back just take it back to poet.  i'll clean up goomba village when i'm taking the last chain letter to goompapa.  before i go up to that club area, i'll finish the koopa koots and clean up pleasant path.  this is just a general route, i'll fix it up later if i have to.  does that sound good?

pyromaniac: 2009-04-06 07:17:13 pm
hey hey hey!!
i revised segment 28 and added 29 and 30. i think the anti guy fight is easy enough, it's more skill in this version than in floogal's, i don't know if it's faster or not because i'm already at 1hp before i enter the fight, but floogal entered the fight with 10 hp and had to get hit.

i would love to be able to claim and sell everything in one little trip but i had to sell, claim and then sell to actually get all of the items dealt with, so tell me what you guys think.

tomorrow, i'm leaving for florida until next tuesday so i'm not going to be working on this really.  i might not even start working on it again until summer, so i'm sorry if i don't get this done soon. =P we will see what happens, but i'm going to try and finish shy guy's toybox route tonight and maybe even start with lavalava island.  lavalava island will be a pretty long chapter so probably not.

EDIT: i don't know what i'm going to do for fp for the general guy because i need the maple syrup for maple ultra.
hey hey hey!!
oh no, i'm not letting this topic get passed the first page again.  any thoughts on what to do for general guy?
Sorry, I've been much too busy lately to do any planning for this.

Personally, I think that battle-planning should be last priority -- Koopa Koot, letters, Super Blocks, and coin-collecting should be all ironed out first before worrying about fighting.
