The current run I'm working on is SS any% again, aiming for 0:31.

Below is the original post.

Hi there. I posted the same topic on m2k2. I'd like to know about about a speed run of super metroid on PAL version being accepted

I've been speed running the PAL version now very intensely for the past 2 and a bit years. Watching Hotarubi's runs at the same time and reaching what i like to think is that same leval of consistancy as him.

A while back i done two tool-assisted runs on emulator. One on PAL and the other NTSC. I took the same route on both ( the usual fast route) utilising the same strategies in all rooms (apart from the obvious rooms you cant do the same like the first lava rising room in norfair) and made to look like a human playing at the top of their game. The NTSC version got 29 minutes completion time. PAL was 32 minutes. of course thats a 3 minute time differance between the two version when taking the same route and playing at the top of your game.

So i was thinking if Hotarubi done his crazy 31 minute run, then an equivelant time on PAL would undoubtedly be 34. I've got 35 minutes on three occassions and i'm so close to 34. I've got a dvd recorder and re-writable discs. I'm all set to record the run of my life. All i need is just some verification that such a run would be accepted.

33 minutes on PAL would be the same as Hotarubi getting 30 minutes on NTSC. Not many people believe anyone can do it ( tell you the truth i wouldn't be surprised if he managed it) considering many believe his 31 is a high 31.

All i need is some encouragement. Thank you anybody for reading this.  Smiley
Thread title:
it should be exactly the same as metroid prime, which means the answer to your question is yes. good luck and i look forward to seeing a run from you. don't forget to post a small quality test of the output of your dvd recorder in tech support so we can check that.
ok thanks nate  Smiley  ill be recording in sp quality on my dvd recorder. I've done many tests myself. It looks brilliant, like realtime gameplay almost but i'll still send a small test to you as you requested.

once again thanks for the support and i'll let you know how i get on.

Awesome, keep us updated on your progress.

Some people just like to believe that some things aren't possible as a matter of habit.  Ignore this form of inertia and go for broke!  By the sounds of it, it's only a matter of time before you nail your goal.

Wow. I really are interested see it. PAL is even more harder speedrun, because doors open slower and this make hard keep your running speed up and these door shinesparks requires even more better timings.

I never believed under 37 is even possible on PAL. Cpadolf already got 39 minutes (console) on PAL and this seem really awesome. I personally never got game under 43 minutes. Tongue

Do you work your run segmented or single segment? Wink
This will be single segment like Hotarubi. Make no mistake this will be extremly hard. i kept getting 37 for ages but then one day i got 35 and was like wtf ! and at the same time i was going that run was far from perfect so 34 is definatly possible.
I need some advice on the bosses of the game
chozo- dont have any issues there really

kraid- i obviously do the fast kill but with with 4 supers, not the one missle quickly followed by 3 supers. I usually recover a few supers after he's defeated so no problems there.

phantoon- now here is the super metroid runners nightmare boss, i can do the two round wave-power bomb combo 2 rounder against him but i have very, very bad consistancy with it and lately i've given up doing it altogether and opting for the safer( and sometimes still pretty quick) 3 round method.

I avoid the supers in maridia and take on botwoon with supers on the first round and then on the second i finish him off with ice-wave-spazer charged shots. he can be killed surprisingly quickly this way. Again i CAN do the the wave-power combo on him with more success that phantoon but if you stuff it up your screwed.

draygon- due to me not having many supers i opt for the shinespark death. This has little success as i waste a lot of time sometimes. Has gone well before though and i have no problems shinesparking back acrosss the room.

ridly- allways seems to be random with me. Seems to be more agressive the lower my health. I mean what the hell is that all about. I've died quite a few times on ridly

mother brain- murder beam glitch. No real problems there.

any hints and tips on the bosses will be very aprreciated
Apart from that all the other rooms strategies outside of the bosses are very quick. Fastest methods the PAL version would allow me. I like to think  Grin
You can skip the Torizo on PAL console which should actually save a few minutes easily. But idk how worth it that trick would be in a SS, it seems like it must be very difficult.
I've done chozo skip probably about 15 times but then the rest of my run turns out to be crap. it saves 20 seconds which is nice. but the pressure to continue doing a good run after that is immense. But of course i could try this. Another problem i have with this is finding somewhere to recharge my missles without wasting too much time. The bats are very unreliable for me for some reason.
Good news i've now adopted a little strategy to do the 2 rounder against phantoon with the wave-power bomb combo. As soon as phantoon leaves the screen after my two spazer-wave charged shots i count 1,2,3,4 (nice and quick, not seconds) two maybe three tiles from the left and i press start just a fraction after 4. Then i de-equip spazer and press start again. Then more often than not, it hits him. I'd say i have about a 60 % maybe 70% success rate with it now. This is really gonna help towards 34, if not, its gonna be the deciding factor Tongue
I'm really looking forward to this...
welcome to the machine

You're not imagining things.  Ridley speeds up the lower his health gets.  It's been a while since I've heard the details of this fight, so parts of the following may be wrong, but I have enough confidence in them to post them so whatever.

Anyways, Ridley starts with some amount of health, and speeds up as his health drops.  He doesn't die when he gets to 0, though.  Instead, he enters what we call berserk mode, where he's at his most aggressive and brutal.  To determine when he actually dies, a timer is set when he hits berserk, and it starts counting down.  When this timer hits 0, he dies.  You can knock time off this timer by hitting him with additional shots... or you can just get grabbed, as this is the point where him grabbing you results in his death.

In short, Ridley fight strategy revolves around knowing when to get grabbed to quickly finish the fight.  I'm sure you already knew that, but having a general idea of how it works should make it easier for you.
Thanks. Yea i did know about triggering his death by getting caught and how he speeds up the lower his health gets. But i meant if i enter the room with say... under 1 energy tank he seems to be rough with me. like diving in at me with no way of telling he would do that. And this is right at the begining of the fight. most of the time tho he's fine not a problem. The usual sweeps he does later on tho i can easily scout. Also i know about when he starts bouncing and facing left and you just stand under him on the left hand side of the platform and shoot his arse.

man this just really makes me wanna finish it now, ill begin work on it next week as i'm off for the weekend. just three bosses giving me a hard time .phantoon (again :'() botwoon .i just know i can kill him faster, even with wave-power bomb combo it seems almost impossible to kill him in one round. draygon- well..... dunno wat to do about that yet. once these are sorted i shall begin recording. not sure how long its gonna take.
we have lift off
I would record all the time, it will help you get used to it and you don't want to miss an amazing run.

I have the PAL version of this as well so I would love to see a PAL run. It sounds like you are close to doing it so good luck!
Just wanted to jump in and say that I am also very much looking forward to this, and I wish the runner the best of luck!

Also, I do have a tip for fighting botwoon.  One thing I've noticed about hitting him with the PB-wave combo, is that it's much better to be late than too early.  If you miss slightly too late, it seems that the wave beams are more likely to hit the invulnerable part of his body, which allows you to quickly change to supers (or activate all the beams) and unload, as opposed to missing early, which usually results in having to wait for the beams to re-circulate, which of course limits you from shooting until they have all hit.  I'm not sure if that helps any, keep in mind that I'm not a pro speedrunner at this game by any stretch and I've only played the NTSC version, so I have no idea how the timing works with the PB-wave combo in the PAL version.
thanks for the tip. The reason why i do the wave-power combo at all is because i really want all of them to hit because they do so much damage when they do. But i suppose getting a few to hit and then allways changing to supers immediatly after will still be a good strategy like you said. I think one rounding botwoon on PAL is almost impossible for two reasons. One- missles and beams all shoot at a slower rate PAL and two- i'm almost certain botwoon moves around quicker on his first turn effectively ending his first turn faster. so you have two things against you if you try for one rounding him. O well two or three rounds can still be fast.
just practising on draygon at the moment. Its going better than i thought. i just managed to three round him using shinesparks, shooting one super before each one so i do a lot of damage each turn. One things thats anoying though is sometimes i dont get a blue suit after draygon dies. Is there anyway of making sure i get it ?.
Guess i should have asked this earlier. Do i have a choice to play this either on my wii or original snes. Its exactly the same on wii, only its got a slightly larger and brighter screen and my wii classic controller only serves as a functioning snes pad because my snes pad is a bit damaged in the d-pad. I wont lie i would prefer to play this on my wii probably because i'm used to it a bit more. Also if i play on snes i dont want to mess moves up that should otherwise be simple just because i have a faulty snes pad.

What do people think?
DS Dictator
You can play this on the Wii.
SMB the Lost Levels (Famicom/NES) and Castlevania Rondo of Blood were played on the Wii system.

My name is 4N6/Forensics.
I've been rigorously testing the 2 Round Phantoon kill and I've come up with a way that works almost every time and could be very beneficial to you. It works about 90% of the time for me but, this is done on NTSC so it might be different for PAL. I hope this helps and I wish you luck on your run I really can't wait to see it.

Hit Phantoon with the 1st Charged Shot preferably on the right side because its easier to time the next shot. Now run to the left of the screen and hit him with the 2nd Charged Shot just before hes about to leave the that side of the screen. Now charge your next shot right away and run to the right of the screen. As soon as the shot is fully charged press start and take your Spazer off and press start then immediately start tapping left (Stutter Walk). He should get hit by the entire Wave Beam Shield if you do it correctly. Then finish him off.

I have only beaten Super Metroid 4 times so far with 100% and its because of you speed runners that made me want to play and speed run this game casually. I personally like 100% runs the best and I also hope you post one on PAL soon. I really support Speeddemosarchive.com and I just want to help all you speed runners for my favorite Single Player game ever.

1st run - 2:10
2nd run - 1:41
3rd run - 1:26
4th run - 1:22

All these runs were done on the Wii and I didn't get this method until my 3rd run and I've been doing it ever since.
Blimy thats an awesome strategy you ve come up with there. I watched it on youtube using the link you posted. very nice indeed. Due to charge beam taking slightly longer to charge on PAL the timing might have to be different. But if i can rearange it a bit to compenstae on PAL i might use it. What i do is after my two spazer-wave charged shots i wait until phantoons right edge is roughly adjacent to the right hand edge of the screen, and then i begin counting 1 to 8. In my own quick rythem which i can't replicate by words. As soon as i say 8 i press start and de-equip spazer and unpause. Around an 70 to 80% success rate with it now. If you notice in Hotarubi's run he jumps high on the left for his seconds shot at phantoon. This (i think) is to make sure phantoon comes swooping down to the bottom left for your potential third attack. So he makes samus stand at the bottom left. I do the same exactly the as this.

As for doing a 100% run. Yes i will be doing one once this any% is out of the way. I'm looking forward to getting stuck into that at some point.

I wouldn't have started speed running this game were it not for the runners that came before. Smokey, Red scarlet and Hotarubi. Also TASers cpadolph, saturn and all the others. Like you this is also my favourite single player game ever.

Thank you lxx4xNx6xxl for your imput and support
Any chance you post your progress and/or attempts up on youtube?

Can't wait for this  Smiley
