Link to C2L1 actually links to C1L3.

And I haven't played this game, but is there any other way to finish it without killing each monster? But the run (watched C1L3 only) is pretty nice, though.

The game features a checkpoint system which for the most part, will only open up the path forward once EVERY enemy's been eliminated.  Once they've had their asses sufficiently kicked, a gate or something will drop and a checkpoint (The red pentagrams) appear.  You can stand near the exit to the level but unless every last monster is dead (The compass at the top will continually point at them until they're dead) you'll just sit there staring at a wall or something like that.  Once you kill everyone and hit that checkpoint trigger, generally the game saves and throws you into the next room with a ton of monsters in it.

It makes for a painfully linear game as there's not many opportunities to just skip by a section (Maybe the uber awesome Rocket Launcher/Minigun can be used to rocket jump, but I remember that not really working either).  Speed running a game like this is interesting since it is just memorizing spawn points and planning his route around killing these enemies as fast as possible...

Makes for an exciting run as we can see in the Asylum video if you ask me.

Either C5L1 or C4L1 (the city on the water) has way too many chances to skip a lot of physical boundaries.  The window sills and canopies make for easy ascention to the rooftops, which gives a totally different vantage point for the whole stage.  The opera level also allows for a few 'shortcuts', but not sequence breaking.

Could you tell me about these opera shortcuts  Smiley
The only real shortcuts that I know of are in the snowy bridge, you can skip 2 checkpoints and kill only half of the monsters  Grin

And btw I tried the rocketjump as soon as I got the rocketlauncher, and it doesn't work. Sad You can make longer jumps by bunnyhopping Wink
Tested a few shortcuts out myself way back when I was considering a run, but a lot of them just don't pan out. If you skip killing monsters in one area, the monsters in another usually won't appear. Obviously this means you're either stuck, or you have to go back and finish the previous checkpoint. The Docks level has some easy shortcuts, but it suffers from these problems too.

Yes I remember that the docks has some similar shortcuts like the snowy bridge. But I haven't played that level for a long time and there is still a long way there. Well, let's see about the docks while I get there.  Wink

Sure.  In the main room, with the seats and the crates, I'm fairly sure that you can climb up the walls of the outer walkways.  Something about having to use the divets in the walls as temporary footing.  You can skip the first stairwell ninja fight that way.  You should be able to do this the same way that you get a later secret in the level (where the treasures are held above a staircase in which you fight some of the bulky samurai dudes).

I really wish I could say more, but I haven't played the game in about a month and I can't reinstall it until this monday, at the earliest.  If I could get FRAPS to not ruin my framerate, I would make a few runs myself.  Namely your C3L5.  50 trillion stake ammo pick ups all around, and you used the shotgun...
Just a question.  What cards are you using?  Obviously you got a faster fire card and the 3x or 4x or however many multiplier damage card, but what's that third card, movement speed?
omg! wtf?
i can hardly wait until you'll submit your run here.. i'll download them then since i've got problems with those free hosts you're uploading now to..

well it depends, sometimes there is the iron will which gives immortality or then i use the double time bonus so the cards last 20secs longer.

the most usual set is:

SILVER
Mercy, cards can be used three times
Replenish, double the ammo amount in ammoboxes

GOLD
Iron will, immortality    in boss fights i use dexterity, 2xfiring speed
Rage, quaddamage
Double time bonus, cards last 20seconds longer

In some levels which have lots of enemies (>200) I also use the soul leecher card, not replenish. Demon morph can be a great asset but it's difficult to make the morph happen in the right place

Btw just started chapter IV. First C4L1 practise went through in 5:29 without cards. I'll try 20-30seconds faster for the video. This level looks like it could have some shortcuts, so if anybody knows something, please tell me  Smiley
FINALLY! C2L2 video added

And just in time for server maintenance!

No es comica, filefront.  Now I have to wait for a bit :-/
I re-installed my windows and updated all the drivers. It really made the game run smoother and now I even get higher than 30fps when recording. Much easier to play  Smiley

Filefront seems to be working again \o/, started uploading new videos  :). Just fought through C4L2 The palace, damn that level is long and it gets boring  ;D, no shortcuts, no exploding barrel tricks, nada, just kill kill kill die die die all the way. Best time I archieved without cards is 15.16  :P. Let's see what happens with cards. 357 enemies!!! so let's try soul catcher and demon morph Grin
......

Seeing the very first 15 seconds of the chapter 4 level 1.... just seeing you own those dogs... brilliant. For some reason, I just had a flashback to the Prohibition episode of the Simpsons where they test out a catapult by using an actual, living cat.

"Mrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooooooooow!"

Thunk!

Good show.

Btw, I redid that castle in 3:17, I noticed that I can shoot the little skeletons through roof with the rocketlauncher. Well not a huge difference 3:24->3:17 but it's still faster  Grin

C2L2 is a broken link, but I'm still diggin' everything else.
C2L2, C2L3 redone & C4L1 redone videos added. Also I calculated total times for the first three chapters, if anybody cares  Grin
C4L3 & C4L5 videos added
I have been upping some of the videos but I haven't made any new ones. I dunno, am I getting bored or what but somehow chapter V isn't that much fun. It could be that the levels are just long and don't seem fast. And I watched my older chapter I videos and they need improvement and A LOT!!  Grin But anyways I'll continue uploading and try to make this run finished before new year
Just call me the cynicism machine
If you are looking to improve levels, I'm fairly sure that C2L6 and C3L4 can be a lot faster.

Furthermore, I think a lot of areas could be a bit faster if you used the Pain function of the Painkiller and just ran through mobs with your cards active.  Anything in C1 could probably be walked through if you were attacking this way.  No need to aim  Grin

I improved C1L4, 6:44->6:26. That's pretty much the best I can do, now I had to wait even longer that enemies would spawn. That kind of situations are booooooring  Grin

Edit: I also improved C1L2 cards run 6:27->5:49, I tried many tactics and card variations and finally got it working. But once again the enemies don't spawn fast enough  ;D. Reinstalling windows might have something to do with better times because fps is so much smoother (30-45), before reinstalling it was always below 30 and made some of the videos look terrible. Sad
Working on C5L1, city on water. I found a nice shortcut, required some running on walls and over 50 fails but definetly worth doing. Skips half of the level  Grin
Edit history:
RJ19: 2005-12-25 01:47:47 pm
I'm finished with C5L1. Times are 4:49/4:03. I'll upload the card video 'till morning. But here's a video of the shortcut I used: http://files.filefront.com/Painkiller_A2avi/;4511094;;/fileinfo.html
The amount of failed attempts must have been around 750  Tongue
It was so easy (NOT!!!) when I practised, but when I started recording and FRAPS put fps from 85 to 30, it wasn't so easy anymore. This is the only level which has been done in two sections because I was so frustrated of the fails and I didn't want to risk this level by fucking it up in the later parts. So I saved where this clip ends and loaded if I wanted to do rest of the level better. There will be a slight glitch in the final cuts.

Merry Christmas everyone  Smiley
