Anyone thinking about doing a speed run for Overlord. Since you can vary between fighting by yourself and fighting with minions it would be interesting to see which is fastest.
Thread title:
Sure, why don't you find out and show us what you've learned.
Here is some of my research.

To complete the game you need:
1) All 4 minion types.
2) The ability to summonat least 12 minions (the maximum number needed to turn a wheel is 12).
3) To defeat Melvin Overbelly, Oberon, Sir William, Goldo, Jewel, Kahn, and the Wizard.

The following areas do not need to be visted to complete the game:
1) Dungeon, forge, or private quaters in the tower
2) Silent Order (white priests who mumble)
3) The area where the Durium smelter is stored in Understreets.
4) The Glittering and Arcanium mines.
5) Level 2 of the Brewery

The following items are not need to complete the game:
1) Any of the smelters
2) Any of the spells
3) Any health and mana upgrades
4) All but one of the minion number upgraders (yellow cyclinder), unless you forge 400 minions into a helmet (2 minion increase).
5) Any tower upgrades
6) Mother Goddess Statue (after capturing Jewel you don't need to take it anywhere)
7) Beer Kettle (improves minion armour somehow)

Regarding enemies if you forge weapons and armour with a lot of browns you can help your minions fight some of the tougher enemies (bosses not included since minions are often easily killed by them; except Oberon, Kahn, and the Wizard).

However if the Overlord has very little health and no forging weapons / armour it's better to let the minions do the fighting to prevent the Overlord becoming injured.

Regarding the Mistress I would recommend sticking with Rose, since she upgrades your brown minions for free (brown minions are used most for normal fighting).
I've got some more information.

You can skip the cut scenes by pressing the 'space bar'.

Moral choices

1) Giving the peasents the food is faster than fighting them (there are more than 3).

2) Burning Evernight is quicker than not burning it (it's not necessary to go here).

3) Though it's quicker to choose Velvet, Rose's upgrades may prove more useful.

4) Feeding the elves to the slugs is easier than fighting the slugs (it's not necessary to do this).

5) It's slightly quicker to take the gold, than the elven women.

6) It's quicker to give back the Mother Goodess Statue (you don't need to pick it up).

7) It's quicker to ignore the traitors than punish them.

Glitches

If you stand by Rollie's treads he can't move or attack you (Rollie is a boss):

When forging if you select some minions to be sacrificed, then pause the game before they jump into the forge they will not be deducted from the number of minions you have but you still get the all benefits.

I was recently watching somebody play this on the XBox360, and I am quite impressed with the game. How long do you think it would take to complete a run? Not getting any upgrades for the Overlord sounds the most sensible way to speedrun.
It's hard to say how long it will take. Though the whole game can be completed quickly even it you get everything it's linear, so you can't avoid much.

I'd say it will take a few hours to complete, assuming you only get what you need and run from most fights (enemies rarely chase you). But if you could increase the game's speed that would greatly reduce the time taken (the battles are more time consuming than difficult).

Also you may need more minions that I previously stated because you need at least 3 minions per passageway to stop Jewel escaping.
I've managed to find a guide for Overlord:

Personally I recommend travelling to Heaven's Peak to get the blue minons directly after you get the greens, then finding and killing Sir William, then returning to Evernight to destroy Oberon's root nodes and kill him. This is because it quicker to finish one level at a time rather than jumping between them, and after defeating Sir William and Oberon you need to enter the Dwarven lands via Evernight.
