Outpost, the mother of all that is buggy, had a Sequel? OMFG! Please give a link to a review, or something, maybe I know it, but forgot for self-protection... .
I've played outpost and I've played outpost 2. They are almost completely different games. I used to have an outpost 2 disk, and I played it non-stop for a year with the online play.
To me it's kind of sad it never received wide recognition.
I never completed the game, but then again I was only 12 years old then. I just bid on one on ebay and we'll see how it goes. It may or may not run on Windows XP.
It starts out pretty easy but then it gets harder. If I remember right at the end of the campaigns you have to deal with a cloud of acid called "the blight". Basically, you have to hurry and complete each mission before your base gets overwhelmed by the cloud.
Sometimes there are earthquakes or volcanic eruptions too. In the very latest missions it can be hell.
I'll try to do a run but I doubt it will be of any significance unless I get some good tips on running a colony or am able to come up with enough time-savers myself. Hopefully somebody here has played it...
I was never able to finish it, the blight or lava always got me in the missions, that or the nasty not-enough-people downspiral. It runs fine on XP though.
You could always run the sandbox-ish scenario missions too.
apparently the game is for download now. A small community reworked it to make it more XP friendly and executable without the Cd. You can get it here: http://www.outpost-universe.net/index/outpost-2
I haven't tested the single player yet, but I assume it works. If anyone wants to give me a hand try it out and see if you notice any time savers. I've been playing multiplayer with the small community to get my rushing skills polished.
I've been tooling around a bit in game. This game is *hard*. I've been focusing on the Plymouth missions since I am a plymouth player, and am stuck on the third mission. So far I have attempted it 10+ times and get destroyed by a volcanic eruption each time.
There are also numerous electrical storms and earthquakes to plan around. One earthquake will destroy all your convecs if they are parked near the structure factory, and the other will disable your mine and kill your cargo trucks.
It will require some trying to predict and conquer these disasters.
The mission scenario requires 30 children and I usually have only 20. I probably just need to make two nurseries instead of one. Stay tuned for more....
After being stuck on Plymouth mission 3 for a few days, I finally hauled out the game manual and learned a bit about morale. Then I was able to breed enough children to beat the mission.
I'm up to plymouth mission 5 now. The first few missions will be fairly linear and probably can't be sped up very much, however the later missions that involve combat contain a lot of possibilities. This will definitely be a segmented run with individual level times... Then, if anyone else wants to try to improve individual levels, the overall game time can be improved as well.
