Nothin beats the classics....NES / SNES for life
I went back a little in the forums to Jan 15th.  It appears as though people would like to see a few Onimusha runs.  I'm a long time watcher of the SDA, and now I want to make a contribution. Can I get some support for a potential run of Onimusha: Warlords? (a.k.a. the first one)

110% ABSOLUTELY!! I love Onimusha games. Please visit this thread: http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=consoles_newer;action=display;num=1136332919 as I recommend and explain in that thread, why I would love to see someone speedrunning Onimusha 2 rather than 1 and 3. But I mean that in a positive way  Tongue By all means, feel free to speedrun Onimusha 1 Smiley

Edit: btw, ever played and considered speedruning Shinobi for PS2 ? (regarding your nickname)  8)

A shinobi is just a ninja. Shinobi was, IMHO, a disgrace to the PS2 console.  Not only was it ridiculously difficult, but in every level past the first mission, your life is constantly being drained by your cursed sword, Akujiki. This basically just meant you had absolutely no time to either, A.) Have any amount of fun with the game, or B.) Do any amount of exploration for hidden items. As well, the lack of more than 5 animations for Tate, a feat accomplished by killing at least 4 enemies in rapid succession, thus forcing you to watch a rather disorienting, unavoidable 5 second cutscene just completely destroyed the appeal of the game for me.  So, not to completely flame Shinobi, but I can't envision myself running that when I could do something more appealing..like get a root canal.

Anyway, I'm looking into acquiring Onimusha 2. I never finished it, I only rented it, and Nobunaga completely pwned me at the end...I still prefer Oni 1 think.

Have you checked this site: http://homepage3.nifty.com/shin3/movie/movie.htm

Dont feel a bit discouraged if you've seen his Oni 2 run, instead, see it as a killer motivation and something to aim for Wink

Thanks for that link. Provided an hour's worth of entertainment. The difference between the first and the second games is quite simple. The first requires you to upgrade your magic power, so you can open doors to progress. So, even if you're really good at Issen (insta-death) strikes, you still need about 2-300 kills throughout the game, would be my guess. Another thing are the cut-scenes, which to the best of my knowledge, can't be skipped. So that's at least 30 mins(??) of storyline that you can't breeze through.

Shin's run of 2 was quite remarkable, definitely a pure speed run through the game. He killed only when required to, and Issen'ed the crap out of the bosses. A good run, but again, there lies the difference between the 2 games.
Hey, Just checking on the progress (if there is any) of this run. Just wanted to let ya know I did a fun runthrough of this a while back and the time was 2:27 on the last save, and I also had the Bishamon sword, so I totally think sub 2 hours is possible, especially if you don't go to the dark realm to get the Bishamon Ocarina. Any takers on this challenge? I'm not the best at this game, but maybe I'll try honing my skills and making it a first run for me? it'd take me a while, but I'd be willing to try it.

I went and did a single-segment playthrough on Friday and got 3:10, getting the Bishamon Sword and all the flourites on the way. Seeing as I hadn't picked up this game for about 6 months, I'd say it was ok. I know this could be done waaay faster than that.

Also, I haven't asked Radix about this yet, but I noticed that if you don't have other saves on the memory card, you are required to watch all the cutscenes, but if you have other saves, like a game clear one, you can skip all the cutscenes that you've already watched. So my question is: Can you have a game clear save in order to be able to skip the cutscenes, or do you have to start the game fresh without the clear data and watch all the cutscenes?

One more thing, you can skip all FMV sequences, you just can't skip the in-game cutscenes. Enjoy!

You must skip the cutscenes. If it requires having previously beaten the game, that's fine.
Ok cool, then that'd mean that the time could be cut down by quite a lot. Sub 1:30 might even be possible. Sweet  8)

Yay! So dear DonMasakoni, if you submit your future run, will it be on normal or easy? I think you should first begin speedrunning it on normal. What do you think? Also, do you think sub 1 hour is possible on normal mode?

Also, if you do manage to record a run, try and do it on hard. Runs on the lowest difficulty are very boring to watch IMO. =\

Other than that, good luck.

fucking .gif....
this would be really cool and I want either 1 of the Onimusha adventure game to be speed ran.

I never tried one myself, but I would like to see the kind of planning and the kinds of strategies to dealing with bosses and puzzles and stuff.  Last Onimusha game I touched was Dawn of Dreams and I was in the middle of a 2nd run through of hard...and that was last year :/  Also if anyone can do Onimusha: Gaiden that would be too awesome (I still would like to play that game one of these days, but I have no X-box)

I think the player Shin is your ultimate competitor and a good rival as you eloquently put it :). Here is the link for Onimusha 2 and 3. http://homepage3.nifty.com/shin3/movie/movie.htm
Hi all.

Any progress on this? I think it would be a great game for a speedrun.
My best time is 1:19 (on the PAL version, which I think is slower than the NTSC version. The movements and speech seem horribly out of sync at times). If the NTSC version is 6/5 times faster as I think it is, it's about 1:06.
I fluked a few times and the battle with the beemonster lasted way too long. The fight with Fortinbras was also a bit long. Getting under the 1 hour mark is then difficult, but not impossible for the NTSC version. It is for the PAL, I guess. My 'Ultimate Mode' speedrun was 55 minutes (~46 minutes NTSC). That sets a lower bound for the time, I`m sure.

Anyways, I`m eager to hear some progress on this...

I've got question about the attacks. Are You trying to do Issens as much as possible, or just do the normal attacks?

Im not answering for him (whoever you asked that question to) but anyone who decides to speedrun any Onimusha game should definitely use Issens all the time.
