we definitely need to plan sda-only events. if people want to go to magfest they can do that on their own. of course we can plan a joint appearance there too but i can't see it being anywhere near as cool as sda-only stuff. i mean i can't imagine the magfest folks would be too helpful in publicizing us especially after we were featured at pax last year (apparently magfest hates pax).

You can do public speedruns.  Granted it'll have to be single-segment with no restarts so you only get 1 shot at it but that would be part of the fun.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
MetroidMaster: It's about 2 hours from Richmond to northern Virginia if traffic is good, 2 1/2 - 3 hours if it's not. It's not a very long ride (it's a straight shot along 95/395), and maybe someone from the south can pick you up along the way.

I'd say Magfest is a better idea, simply because we don't have any definite plans, and we're starting a little late. I do agree with nate that we need to start planning SDA-only events.

Ekudeht: A lot of speedrunners are chronic restarters. If they make a single mistake in the beginning, they usually restart :-/

I don't think it is expected that they'd break world records in a public setting; mistakes would just have to be acceptable.  They may have been able to beat "insert game here" in 12 minutes and 02 seconds but in a public setting a speedrun for that same game could "easily" be doable in under 13 minutes by the same gamer - which would still be worth seeing as it would be done live.

I'd prefer the more personal meeting at someone's house

I do too but WARRRRGH too many people are interested! Wink

Quote from Arkarian:
How long is the meetup going to be? If it's at MAGFest, are we planning to stay the whole time, sleeping in hotels/people's houses?

Good question, I always figured 3-4 days, although of course people could stay for less time if they really wanted. I mean, that's why we're scheduling when school's out.

I agree with the rest of your post but I don't see how this part matters at all. Also we're not at PAX this year apparently, plus I'm sure MAGFest would be happy to add us to their lineup for prestige and attracting attendees. The issue is whether or not we want them, not whether or not they want us.

Since I want to make it there alive, I won't be using Amtrak. Flying is a little too weird and cramped for me. Greyhound sounds great (for me anyway).

I still think it would be awesome if we all met at Mike's house.

Whoops, it appears I spoke too soon:

Brawl is terrible competitively anyhow. SSB is overrated. I'll throw down in some Street Fighter or Guilty Gear anyday, even though I'm awful at fighting games.

Hey carc, I read eariler you'd probably fly. What about if i drove, would you pitch in for gas? Since we are both in FL?

besides, I have GGXX:AC for wii we could duke it out for practice lol..

My old man wouldn't go for it. If I'm not flying out of state, he throws a bitch fit. =p

You could always take a train, they're pretty reasonably cheap =D

If I come all the way from the other side of the ocean I would like to stay for a week or two. But I guess it is not an option to hold a long event like that. But 3 days should be the minimum Smiley If someone can offer a place to sleep I would be glad!
One option could be, having a SDA weekend, and then a normal "seission" after that if there is some long-way traveler and such who wants to stay a few more days.

MAGfest sounds cool. I wouldn´t mind being there either.

Yeah. Things like playing basketball, watching a movie and have a party would be sweet. seriously. this sounds awsome and I will reject my snowboard trip and hopefully ending up at this event.
i might go if it's reasonable driving distance.

I agree with having some definite SDA–only events, but of course if people want to go to MAGFest, we could get a group together to drop by there (or all of us, even). But yeah, nothing like getting the more personal hang–out time with the people you constantly talk to online.

Definitely no reason it'd have to be entirely video game–focused: I'm up for any of those things. Might be fun to see if the best speed runners are any good at basketball. Tongue
Let's hope there are no collision detection exploits with the basket.
Hi
Put me down as a maybe.
Doin Good
Put me down as a no. Perhaps I would have an opportunity (and more of a desire) to make it to the 2nd Official SDA Get-Together! Sounds exciting, regardless. Heres to hoping this all comes to fruition...
Just a thought? Is there any chance that some of us who can't make it somehow be ther in "spirit", and by spirit I mean live video feed. Webcamish...like using Skype or something (I need an excuse to use it since I've only used it about twice).

Don't know if thats been brought up yet since I didn't bother to read through all 6 pages of this.
I want to come but probably can't. My future schedules are always so tenuous and unclear. Maybe if you held the get-together out in the middle of nowhere, then I'd be close enough to attend. Tongue
wise fwom yo gwave
I can speak from experience and say that mostly, live speedruns suck. I'm so used to restarting that when I screw up, it really bugs me and its very hard to recover. People can still be impressed, but yea its not that great ot watch. I don't think i could beat sonic 2 under 21 minutes consistently lol.

But could you beat it in under 22 minutes consistently.:-p

The real problem for live speedruns is for the speedrunner not to be too hard on themselves (we're our own worst critics).:-p

Anyways it doesn't look like I'll attend as if neither MT nor Trevor is going to go I don't have much desire to go either.:-(
Hi! I'm andrewg!
I think it would be very fun to do a live speedrun event. I mean, of course the run isn't going to be amazingly perfect, but they can still be decent. I'd certainly enjoy doing a live speedrun. Any of the smbs would be easy to speedrun quickly.

I'd like to see:

frezy - play contra, megaman
stanski - play sonic
Tiki - play megaman
Liger - play ninja gaiden
vgmr - co-op rush 'n attack and superc with me

possibly somehow have various speedrun face-offs on megaman, contra, and other games.

I hope I can go and I hope I can see some awesome speedrunning.
i'll be glad to record everything and also stream it live for those not able to attend. hopefully mike's poor connection can handle it ...
I would like to come, but alas, I cannot. Bad timing. However, if you plan to another meet-up (with at least a half a year apart) after this one, which I'm sure will be a gigantic success, I'd probably go there, even if I have to travel half the world to do that.

Speed run face-off is a great idea, I hope you'll give it a shot. Smiley
Visually Appealing
i'll give an honest effort to try to attend. i just really need to know exactly where and when.

and i'm all for races. i could put up a decent challenge in MMX1-4.
I'm the guy who complains yet never submits XD
If it was in the middle of England i'd go Tongue
Coolest thing ever: hooking two separate consoles up to two separate televisions and beginning a game at the same moment, and RACE TO LE FINISH!

Moments like that make me realize why I find these so much more interesting than TASes. You can't race a TAS.
sure you can. but, yes, there are a few universes in between the entertainment value of the two.

Well this is all informal anyway so you can stay as long as you like, or leave early, or whatever. I might go a little early myself.

Andrew and Frezy can do Super Mario Bros. 3. Yeah, yeah, restarts, but I can dream can't I?
