I am aware that this is kind of out of nowhere and I'm new here, so I hope I don't come off as an idiot.
I've been watching past runs of AGDQ & SGDQ and was completely blown away by the event.

I'm a former IT who now mostly does technical project management and event planing on the side.
I basically wanted to help out with the event in some way.  I have a lot of experience with large events and I would love to help out in any way I can.  Is there a way I can do this?
I can gladly provide a resume and references if needed.  I'm looking to volunteer.

Thanks!

(Sorry if this is the wrong spot, I could not find a contact page for AGDQ2015)
Thread title:
Volunteers will be solicited a bit further down the line for assisting in several areas (typically donation processing, tech station duty, and hosting). Feel free to offer your services at that time. Generally helping out with tech (which it sounds like you're interested in) doesn't require a whole lot of qualifications, but having some qualifications doesn't hurt.

I don't want to name-drop (Which I guess kind of IS a name-drop), but I have a fair amount of experience.
I would want to know so I could plan time off and stuff.  Thanks for the info Vulajin!  btw, I saw your run of Bastion from the last AGDQ.  Good stuff... Any chance of an iPad run =-O
You know, best chance to make staff see what you're made off? Just get in there, be social and show off your skills. Let yourself speak for you. They're not going to trust anyone who simply shows up on the forum to handle important stuff. But if you volunteer for some things in the marathon and go there, they can get a better picture of who you are. That way, you can get more involved. Win-win, right?

From what I've read since I starting reading more of the forums, they need help with planing and implementation.  I can show up and offer to carry boxes, but that's not the help they need and that's not what I'm looking for.  I want to help make the event run smoothly.  No pay, just want to see an amazing event work even better.  To be honest, I'm shocked in hearing that there were so many issues when the stream appeared to work out so well.

As I said, I know they aren't going to say "Hey Random guy, you want to help?  Here, run all this stuff."  I would like to set up a meeting.  Talk to the people who plan this like real people.  Show the resume.  Explain what I've done before.  I'll even give them some references.

I want to offer professional style event planing and logistics.  I know you don't know me, but that doesn't mean I'm a joke.
I realize what you're saying. All I'm saying is that if you show up and help with the little stuff so they can get to know you first, they might be more inclined to let you in on the bigger stuff in the future, or even during the marathon. Everyone starts small and works their way up.

Well, I do not speak on behalf of the staff, so if they think it's a good idea, they will read this and maybe it will go the way you want. Who knows? But one thing I know for sure is that the sure fire way to help is just to sign up for the little stuff and work your way up from there.

Mystery's basically right, there will be a volunteer thread further down the line. Show up, be helpful, and don't be a complete asshat, and you'll probably be able to usefully contribute. We can always use more hands, even if it's just menial stuff like wrapping cables during teardown.

I'm guessing you guys have had an asshole problem in the past?  I'll keep on eye out for the volunteer threads.
Not a walrus
Not so much "asshole", but definitely some people who were... less than helpful.

Or just never showed up and failed to warn us.

I've been contacted by an admin off-thread, so I'll continue this talk off thread.
Just think of the size of AGDQ. Last time, it brought in a MILLION dollars. A MILLION! Not to mention over 100 000 viewers. That's over ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND. This is serious stuff. This is a backyard marathon. Furthermore, AGDQ has a budget over ten thousand dollars or so, I believe. There's serious risk of something going wrong here. Money going missing, money wasted on useless stuff, etc. If this were to happen, a ton of damage would be done to AGDQ's reputation, to the staff, to the charity. AGDQ is so big that simply one non-team player could mess up the whole planning and make the marathon crash.

So you can see why they're reluctant to hire, or taken help, from just anybody. Anyway, it would certainly be nice if he marathons could get some extra help in the planning. If you are a sincere team player--and I hope you are!--then I wish you the best of luck in getting in touch.

Piggybacking off this: after helping out with ESA and being a broadcast tech myself, feel free to contact me if you want help with the tech stuff as well AGDQ organisers.
Crawlathon WR, get down on my level.

In general, unless you have something very special to offer to the team, just plan on signing up on the volunteer thread. There will be a box where you can explain any skills you have, so your time will be applied as usefully as possible.

I'm with you, Mooga.  I definitely want to help out more.  *GDQ is the entire reason I've even wanted to get involved with speed running to begin with (though on SRL more than here - I'm not great at watching forums).  I went to SGDQ this summer and had a great time (probably because I wasn't staying at the hotel), so I'm really hopeful they come to Denver again next year.  If that's the case, I'll absolutely be volunteering to help out where I can.

In general, I think the rule of "he who is faithful with little will be trusted with much" is probably a good one.  So don't look down on "showing up and offering to carry boxes."  Helping with little things is a great way to show a willingness to serve and be genuinely helpful.
Carrying boxes is how you end up becoming the mom of 400+.
