I thought I would go ahead and start this thread since I know a few people are probably going to run this, such as the previous game's runners, and I have a few things I wanted to note down somewhere.

First off, while going down the slide in "World of Kelp" I accidently clipped out of bounds and into the next area, it didn't seem too helpful though since it had not loaded and the stairs leading to the top were blocked by a man/invisible wall

Secondly, in the arcade level "Amazon Arcade" you get a choice of levels, some are clearly faster than others, however some you can "cheat" some of them without getting noticed too quickly (If people see you cheating your bar goes up)

There were a few other small things, like in the final boss battle, Scarlet can throw the ball onto the fish fountain herself, if you line her up correctly, if you did that for all three it would be pretty amazing.

I might do a few runs of this, seems fun, but other people are probably a lot better than I am Cheesy
Thread title:
I was running the first Octodad, and I'm looking forward to run this new modern sequel of the most random game ever created. I'm gonna take my time and run it casually, once, first, and then, we can break the game WOO!!!

Looks like we're in for a fun time with this game!
Jorfin around
This is what Ive come up with so far http://www.twitch.tv/gerfuggery/c/3640038

In Sea Legs you can go around the boat and skip getting the captains suit. Its rather silly. You cant seem to skip smashing the boxes with the boat though, as you cant talk to your wife if you get there.

I think we should discuss difficulty. I was playing on easy, and you can just run by everything, but that might be a little uninteresting?
Normally I'd say thay we should either go with the fastest or the hardest difficulty but in this case it seems like normal difficulty might have the best balance between skips and challenge.

I too think Normal should be the difficulty, simply because Easy removes a mechanic from the game, while Hard just makes it harder without adding anything.

EDIT: Quick question, since I've never run a new steam game.. what do you do about updates? I presume there is some way to disable them right? Or do I need to get the DRM free copy
Right click Dadliest Catch -> Properties -> Updates -> Do not automatically update this game

I plan on sticking with updated versions (not that I think there's going to be much of a difference), when the commonly ran version is simple to get it's easier for new people to get into it.
Yeah, I have done what you described, but my game just updated when I tried to launch it earlier.

Anyway, what you say is true, so I guess it's irrelevant, I don't plan on being too competitive anyway
Oh, make sure to backup all the game files. That way you can revert to old versions later. In some cases, I can be asked to make a patcher similar to that of borderlands 2. In others, you just copy the files yourself.
Anyways, make sure to backup a working copy of the first release of the game in a secure manner. (and as many other versions as possible too)
this looks cool

God damnit, I've been doing runs all night and I only just seen that video now.
Seems interesting, I wonder why they left her there, maybe they didn't expect you to make it across the fire?
Amateur-level speedrun, but I'll post it anyway seeing as no-one has done so yet:

Some (obvious) strategies:
- Grab the Sports Johnson cereal from the top of the shelf in order to skip the annoying cutscene and having to sneak.
- In the Aquatic Fun Center, if you're fast enough, you can cut in line and get your ticket before the first guy is served, saving a handful of seconds.
- During the sneak level with marine biologists, I purposefully kill myself by entering the staff room, resulting in me respawning right next to it with my sneak bar back at 0, allowing me to carelessly rush past the biologists and grab the shark costume.
- When climbing the planks during the final level you can skip going the intended route and instead "hop" between planks.
- During the final boss fight, try standing behind the fish fountains so that the balls your wife tosses land directly on the fountain (this is also how you get the "Independent Woman" achievement.

I'm just gonna chime in and say run on Normal.

haven't found much yet. We need leaderboards I want times to beat.

edit: for the firewood, if you place the axe in a certain way, probably with the blade on top of the trunk, itll cut the logs as soon as they get placed on the logs. Eliminating the need to touch the axe more than once, but I havent been able to replicate.

I also managed to randomly clip through the second grate in between the pistons and the rotors in the swimming level

Heh, everyone is finding the same tricks as each other by themselves, I've never really been involved with a new game release speedrun before, interesting that we all find the same things.

Here's my runs I did last night, an Any% run, and a Co-op with YuKitty. She has to use the 360pad though, so she has some difficulty. Co-op obviously has the potential to be faster than Single player, but it would require a lot of coordination.
Neither of them are really great runs, but they do show the route, tricks and stuff I guess

This does work, I've tested it and if you place the axe head on top of the stump you can instantly chop the logs.

I did that once too, not sure how though.

Also, another thing I've found that hasn't been mentioned is while swimming, if you hold the button to build up charge and run into something, it looks like the charge carries over despite what Octodad's animation is. You can tell because after you hit something Octodad flashes (if you time it right) and then if you let go you get the biggest charge as if you didn't hit anything.

You can skip them after you've started the ship. But you'll have to do it twice (not to mention it's very hard) so it can only save a little bit of time from not watching the cutscene even on an IL run.

Here's what the route looks like with the skips:

These are my personal bests on individual levels, which adds up to 24 minutes and 11 seconds.

Sub 25 should definitely be possible Edit: I just remembered that the Intro, the Aquarium parts and the Credits are excluded from this >_< sub 25 might only be possible if some major skips are found (like that Kelp World skip), otherwise we're probably aiming at <27.

Also, I've played around with the skip on the final boss fight and it's very glitchy and inconsistent. Sometimes (if you're fast enough? Unsure what causes this) the cutscene with your son tackling the chef and the daughter activating the sprinklers will play at the same time, resulting in moving on to the boss' final phase immediately afterwards.

I'll try and test around some more and see if I figure out what's causing this.
New WR:

How would you guys feel about splitting using a controller and using a mouse into two separate categories? Using a controller gives you a significant advantage, but I don't know how people usually categorize games with vastly different input methods.

Just like to take a second to talk about the latest update

http://steamcommunity.com/games/224480/announcements/detail/1783725844596604642

They say they "Prevent the ability to skip the cafeteria run." which obviously affects the run quite a bit, but at the same time they did: "Rafters no longer randomize, falling rafters are marked.".
They also"Failsafe added for jumping to the front of the boat without smashing boxes.", but I'm not quite sure what they mean by this. Do they mean it now works, or does it not NOT work?
Lastly "Fixed Stacy's movement behavior in dark." could be useful as you can sometimes never trigger the "Give Stacy the light" objective.

I'm not sure whether I like this update or not, I guess it depends on what the boat thing means.

Also, while I'm at it, here's the latest Co-op run I did with YuKitty

qbic, you do a lot of Silent but Dadly better than I did, but have you tried my method of doing the last section? In your video you go to the left and grab the shark outfit, whereas I just go to the right and straight up the stairs, its a lot riskier and normally just ends in you dying, but for such a short run I guess it's worth it.
Other than that, I can't really say anything as your way better than me and YuKitty combined are Cheesy

As for splitting Controller and Mouse/KB, is it really necessary? I haven't tried playing with a controller but what kind of advantages does it give?

The boxes now blow up once I've got around them, so that means we only have to skip once now.

Ah ok, well this update is really a mixed bag then

EDIT: I messed around with trying to do the skip in the updated version, it seems like they have placed a insta kill trigger to the right of Octodad at the start of the level now, the second you get parallel to the posts you die.
I also tried climbing the dish tray, as well as the stack of chairs, to see if I could climb up to the rafters and access the wife, but it seems the insta kill trigger extends high up too.
Just as I start getting decent at running this game this patch comes along and screws me over...

Will most of you keep doing runs on the updated version(s) or just get a hold of the release version? I'll most likely just follow whatever all the others end up doing, but so far it seems I'm very much liking the release version better than the patched one.
I've noticed that you can just skip the part on the final level when you grab the fish lights to swing over the fire you can just run through them.

I found that if you use the controller, moving around is easier, and switching between legs and arms happens automatically, and it flows better in my opinion. Arm mode can be a bitch though.
I "found" that if you save and quit and go back in right after skipping the wedding cutscene, you skip the falling intro completely.
So I was just watching a casual playthrough...and in the final level this guy skipped the walk on top of the planks by accident:

http://www.twitch.tv/m/397516

Not sure what happened there...maybe he died instantly after the spawn, because of the falling plank during the cutscene right next to him while the game was trying to save the checkpoint.
