Whoa...I never thought of that.

You also all missed the important point that nine times out of ten, emulators = piracy.

However, this also brings up the interesting question of how many of the other runs are actually done on legally acquired copies? It's not exactly hard to pirate games for both PC and game consoles these days.

You are right, it isn't possible to check. But from the point of view of the site's reputation, it doesn't matter so much, because it is not possible for the copyright holders to check either. This is not the case with emulators, since (as I understand it) to make a legal backup copy requires you to dump your own cartridges yourself, and very few people have the hardware to do that.

And in that case, why not just make the run with the original cartridge since you have it?

I think SDA does not have to be interested about that. Whether or not a game is pirated usually doesn't affect gameplay, so it is completely unimportant here.
This does not imply that i support piracy or something like that, but if we would care about this, we should also make sure the money spent for the games wasn't acquired by theft or blackmailing.
The only difference would be if it was somehow clearly visible that a game was pirated, but this is probably a therotical issue.

Emulators are a different topic, because there are no roms officially released as files. Allowing those could change public reception because most people associate emulators with piracy. also, there might be legal issues.
The main argument about emulation being not perfect and cheating being invisible stays as the most important to me, though.

I thought this was about using an emulator to play a physical copy (GBA Cart) of a game?

Edit: I guess not, but quick question. Is it really necessary to buy a Nintendo GBA player, or can you buy a nock-off as long as things work pretty much the same?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
those gba to tv devices? sure but a hardware emulator not, the gba player is official and is a gba inside iirc, just different box

Isn't the same true for Fraps and similar software?

Perhaps, but the developers of Fraps would be far less likely to succeed in forcing SDA to remove runs from the site through legal means than game publishers would, for two reasons: a) pirated Fraps videos are undetectable, and b) Fraps developers cannot try to claim copyright on the content like publishers might. The rule is not a moral judgement on piracy. It is intended to prevent the site from getting into legal hot water. After all, the law itself is stupid -- why shouldn't you be allowed to download and use a copy of a cart you already own?
it's a competition thing because we don't want to have separate categories for emulator runs. it's an sda thing because i'm american, the two servers are in the us and there are still many powerful corporations here i don't want to piss off.

i've noticed that many young people think that the legal system is like the laws of physics or something. in fact laws people make are less reliable or useful than the laws of physics. if someone doesn't like you and they have a lot of money then you are in trouble. two solutions: get a lot of money and/or stay out of trouble. rest assured, i'm working on both simultaneously.

btw it's not like i care about getting sued or anything - i'm an asshole and would love to screw with corporations. but it would kill sda and that's unacceptable.
