Well, I recorded a new run in 15:09, but the same one-second-of-missing-footage thing happened, this time in stage 7-2b. But I'm still going to submit this run.
Yeah, I guess the $130 DVD recorder I have now just won't cut it anymore.
Frezy_man, we can safely say that we might be the only two people on the planet who have beaten Ninja Gaiden III without dying. That game is freaking hard. What game are you working on now? I'm trying to find a popular and/or good NES game (preferably a side-scroller) that's not on SDA yet. Super C, Double Dragon, Double Dragon II, Wizards & Warriors, Darkwing Duck, Jackal, Karnov, M.C. Kids, and The Empire Strikes Back all come to mind.
aha.. my dvd recorder is close a collapse too I will probably by a new on next winter or so My NES is connected but job, school and other interests gave me a brake from video games and speedrunning. I have tried a little on mario 3, contra and kung fu, I want to finnish these runs before starting other projects. I just have to spend some damn time in front of my NES, hehe. And I have to many runs my plans but this is what it looks like now. I have about 10 recordning hours or something after my Mega man x2 run.. and thats not very much, hehe.
Ninja gaiden 3 is very hard. Just beat the american version on the NES is a great challenge. But no deaths is awsome 8) Maybe we should start a club. And 1 minute of improvements is great. I have a feeling about how good this one is. Still I know you can get under 15... But don´t expect an improvement from me soon... It depends a little on how your run looks like. I´m glad you got this one. Now I can play this game seriously some time in the future too.
a superc run would be awsome. I can´t think of other games then the ones you sayed. Maybe rescue rangers II? That wouldn´t be very hard? Maybe you should concentrate on tmonts record instead, to get the hole trilogy that should make you to the king.
Congrats vgmrsepitome. I have beaten Ninja Gaiden II too now, and watched the 12.09 run. It is absolutely fantastic!
The leaps to upper platforms, via enemies, in 3-2 and 4-2 must surely have cost you a few attempted runs? Or are you good enough at those jumps to almost always succeed on your first try?
As for not dying in Wizards & Warriors, it shouldn't be as difficult as not dying in NGI/NGII IMHO. The last stage(green), before Malkil, is tricky. I wish it would be legal to do hidden gem-exploitation on that level: jump up for four (of five) gems, scroll the gem-location out, go back for four more gems and repeat. If not you'll have to use a lot of time running around killing a lot of monsters while praying for randomly given gems.

Those enemy boosts did cost me a few runs when I first started speedrunning the game, but after I got the timing down, I almost never missed.
Never hard to verify when it is an improvement :P.
The only question I have is was that a mess up (understandable for sure that late in the run) on that last spike floor/wall climbing part? As in, could you have made it through there one cycle earlier than you did? That was the only thing that stuck out to me, but again thats so late in the run that its not like you can help stuff like that.
Yea I figured it was about 5 seconds or so. Looks like you can't improve this more then 15-20 seconds total though I'd bet for a perfect run, which is great for a game this tough to run/play.
Question: You did the same thing as Frezy Man in 7-2B where you went around the big electric barrier rather than through it despite being invincible from the Fire Wheel (Just before what will go down in SDA history as "The Lost Second"). Does this barrier just behave differently than the others such that you CAN'T go through it or what?
I don´t remeber why. Maybe its a big mistake or that you can´t be faster because of the lift anyway. I can´t remember
Great run off course. Beat me with a hole minute for a short game like this. Still I know, like Stanski says. 15-20 seconds more is possible. probably 30 seconds faster too. Its a lot smoother compared to my old run but there is still mistakes and part where you can go on a little harder with more difficult strategys. Also a lots of seconds can be saved by taking more damage.
There was a lots of wonderful parts in the run. the third and fourth boss were definitely one of the highlights in my eyes. It sure was a good strategy. and you handle the sword hits very well.
It was a big surprise that you skip the sword upgrade in the second level. It seems like you save a couple of seconds on it and you had a little bit of luck on the boss too.
This sure give me motivation to pick up the game again. But not anytime soon. anyway, congrats!

You can pass through all of the electric barriers if you have the invincible fire wheel. The reason I didn't pass through that one is because the wave beam is on the other side, and if I have the invincible fire wheel activated, the wave beam sometimes falls on me, causing me to lose the invincible fire wheel. Even if I passed through that barrier and dodged the wave beam, I don't think it'd be faster because I have to wait for the moving platforms anyway.

I kind of choked on 7-3C and 7-3D, so you could obviously do those sections faster.
I really like the strategy for the fourth boss, too. It looks sweet, and it's fast.
I was pretty lucky with the second boss. He flew exactly where I wanted him to. I don't think I've ever killed him any faster than that.
I haven't read any of the rest of this thread, nor have I watched the speedrun.
However, I absolutely MUST say, the run comments ALONE were so entertaining that I had to download the run immediately. That's never happened to me before, and I applaud the narrative. Great stuff.
I'm not sure what that means, but it's one of the best things I've ever read on the internet.
haha agreed.

I'd love to be the undisputed Ninja Gaiden king, but tmont's run looks pretty solid, so I don't think I'll be trying to beat it anytime soon.
It's solid, but it can be improved. I've made some rather large improvements on some levels. A shame that I just can't record right now. Remember that there's still a world record that we should be chasing after! But anyway, congrats on improving NG III!
I had to go and rewatch the video before answering because I haven't seen it in a while. Shouldave had a list prepared! I won't mention times but 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 4-2, 4-3, 5-1, 5-2, 6-1, 6-3, and 6-4 can all be done better. For some they might be extremely small, but as you can see they really add up. The biggest would be 6-4, by far. Of course these are all considering personal bests, and require perfect playing, which is why tmont's run is still impressive. But, in theory, even if you get a couple of mess ups, the run can still be beaten if the final boss fights are done extremely well. Those really are the make or break sections, unfortunately.
Good luck! I hope you go through with the improvement. All my wisdom was captured in that giant post I wrote out for you a few months ago. The last two boss fights are definitely the biggest areas for improvement; unfortunately they're also the hardest and most inconsistent parts of the game.
I can really get Jacquio's number now, so he's actually not a problem anymore (without slip ups, of course). I still play it "safe" and stick to the right the entire time. Not too sure on the last boss, though. I think your run on him was better than anything I could do. That one is just way too random and I always get hit way too much to concentrate on just hitting it.
