This is the thread of discussing NNK speedrunning, NNK glitches/skips, and all things related to  the game.

My PBs:          Any% Easy: 6 hrs 28 mins IGT 6 hours 31 mins RTA
                      Any% Normal: 8 hrs 47 mins IGT
                      100%:  O:

Ni No Kuni speedrun: 6 hours 31 mins

Can shave off 20-25 minutes off this run, but very solid run overall nevertheless. I died once in the 3rd room of Mummy's tummy because it was a very silly fight, but I probably only lost a minute. I've had a few very very bad fight such as Royal Jelly (only dropping one gold glim after baby shower... dat RNG) King Tom (probably the worst fight in the game) and the final boss (just a very bad and slow fight). Fortunately, I had more good fights than bad fights, and a few near perfect or perfect boss fights such as gladiataur, Swaine's nightmare (I think). I would like to note the first 2 hours of this game is INSANELY GOOD until I died and the royal jelly fight ): BUT it's  still a very solid run.  =D
Thread title:
I know Sockfolder was doing a run of Ni No Kuni a few months ago, you could try asking him (www.twitch.tv/sockfolder). Unfortunately, his past broadcasts for his run/practice were deleted by Twitch.
Hmm ok I'll do that, thanks!

Well, a good start would be posting your route that was 9:05 you mentioned on reddit. Then we can start optimizing it and re-routing it (if even needed). A general outline would suffice as well. There's no foundation currently set for this game aside from the two people we've already mentioned (FFG/sockfolder) and those vods have gone missing. It would be nice to have a PDF or TXT document or even a googledoc of sorts which we could build off of and hopefully improve to drop the time even lower.

So that being said, I think there are multiple people that would be willing to run a game like this but as stated above, they have no place to start from. We build that starting point off a decent route and we'll (hopefully) have more people running the game as well as people (like myself) looking to optimize and improve existing routes.

I didn't record my 9:05 run but I  got my capture device today, so I'll be recording some runs soon (next week)

That's what I was looking for; a foundation or a base of this game, but I don't mind if I'm one of the people who starts the foundation of this game.

There's really only one route in this game since the game is linear, until someone finds a skip(s) or glitches.

You're probably going to be the one that starts it unless Sock has some notes he'd like to share.

FFG is optimizing his route as he goes so he doesn't have to go all the way back and re-route everything because of 1 silly thing that was overlooked, so that... as a whole run foundation... probably wouldn't work as well as say... a general outline of what to get, where, and when.

Other things such as optimal movement and familiar choices are going to be important as well.

Money might be a factor but if i recall correctly it's not THAT bad to work into a run if it's needed. Boss strategies obviously need to be thought of if they require something other than "spam attack/defend commands."

Other, finer details of the run, could be posted as well that maybe new people to the run wouldn't notice initially that are important.

Spell damage calculations would be nice as well, I'm sure something on gamefaqs can tell us what the highest damage per mp usage is in the game. We can then optimize the spell usage against the final boss since that's probably how that will work out.

Timing certain things like spell animations, certain routes through multiple path areas, etc... is extremely important for this.

Even though the game is quite linear there's tons to do before we can get a fully optimized route. Hopefully a skip/glitch is found though, that'd be pretty cool.
Yeaa,  I focused on those factors when I was planning and testing since routing isn't really a huge  factor on the game.

I found a nice skip (nothing major) in Hamelin.
When you're supposed to sneak into the palace, you can bypass the first guard it's the right timing and distance, and even the last guard. This saves about 2-2:30 minutes I believe.
I done one three months ago: https://www.youtube.com/user/shinissen

My current one is more refined, but I haven't tested it yet. That 9:05 is impressive (No DLC?). I'm assuming you stacked shining scales on Oliver and abused Marcassin's Thunder with storm serpent scale? Did you find a way to get predictions in Casino and make Royal Jelly easier without it being luck?  Those two are the only things holding me back from doing a full run again.
A 9:05 sounds really good. I got around 10:30, though there was probably an hours worth of deaths and the run wasn't very good at all. The main tricks I know are:
Skipping some of the guards in Hamelin as mentioned.

Using jump pause (triangle) to bypass all regular mobs in the game.

Using a spell (levitate) that leaves text on the screen to just walk past mobs. Set text speed to slow for maximum effect.

You can bypass the hex trap before the blue chest in Aapep's area by jump+pausing in a somewhat precise way. Not really useful.

You can avoid some text by jumping into loading zones (like before Rusty's nightmare).

You can jump to avoid the poison tick's stun.

Moving after casting some spells makes them faster.

I've skipped a few random cs's somehow, but without any advantage from it.

My route basically involved a very low level run through the first half of the game (very hard), then casino for "infinite" money and a lot of great sage elixirs, then spam Oliver's spells for the rest of the game. I caught no additional familiars. There is a lot the needs to be figured out about strategy and such I think.

Happily awaiting a video from KaeLynne of a new run or a stream posted so I can maybe start putting together an actual route in gdocs/excel/pdf for people to start learning/running this game since information is very sparse currently. I'd use shin's but a 2 hour disparity is quite a bit (no offense of course shin) for me to consider using that as a base for a "guide." That being said, if that 2 hours is nothing but luck and encounters, please let me know.

the biggest factor in my run was "Counter attacking" bosses. It gives about 3-5 second stun on the boss and mitey can hit hard with sharpener (from lemur and later on, war cry)

it's free damage  and you can program the boss to just keep attacking you rather than using tricks/moves.

counter attacking is pretty easy using oliver.  let the boss come at you, and when the boss does an attack animation (takes practice to know boss attack animations)  run to the side and press attack. If the timing is right, you will get a counter attack and will stun. there is a chance a gold glim will drop, and good chance green/blue glims will drop.

Some bosses are hard to counter attack,  and some bosses are just not efficient to counter attack (shadar, white witch, etc)

I'm pretty busy this  week with work and personal plans, but I'll try to record some runs. Who needs sleep anyway?

oh yea, my 9hr 5 min run didn't include any counterattacks. I figured counterattacking while I was practicing bosses.
boss fights can save  a minute to 10 minutes. they're the biggest time savers in the game, and using this counter attack strat I found proves to be very efficient at killing bosses ESPECIALLY ROYAL JELLY.

yea, once you get mornstar, it's all about mornstar.
The casino is somewhat controllable.  I always have my winning cards (20, king, ace/joker) on the left side since the NPC tends to pick cards more on the right (it doesn't really make any sense lol but I  get wins on my first try). Even if I get a bad hand (double ace) I still manage to win games. Try it out, I don't know if it'll work the same for you.

As for royal jelly, it's a long fight.
practice the attack animation of the jelly (it's pretty hard but manageable) and counter attack it. Make sure mitey is sharpened by lemur (mitey's attacks will do 10-12 dmg each hit)
Rinse and repeat, and it should be smooth sailing, BUT it'll still be a long fight

Can you make a tutorial on Counter attacking bosses? Especially on Royal Jelly, and the ones that work with Oliver.

Eh, Casino is still luck then. Sad

Here are some other things i've tested:

- This one is extremely hard to do, but it's viable if you can get it, you try to steal a Pirate Cutlass from a Flummet Florex. This will help with Shadar (first fight), Mummy's Tummy sub bosses, and Royal Jelly. I think it does around 18 and up.

- Here's a trick with the boat and map. If you want to get to the other side of the map, just go the opposite way you're traveling. For example, i'm at castaway cove and want to go to Skull Mountain -  travel with the boat going south until you the reach the end of the map, keep going and you will be at the top of the map. There are also very little enemies to deal with when you reach the top/bottom parts of the map. And no, you cannot get to Yule when you first get the boat as it's blocked by an icy field. I hope a glitch/skip gets found so that you can. Smiley

Oh that's interesting to know. But I haven't had trouble with shadar or mummy's tummy.
Did you try having burning blade and with lemur's Attk boost? It deals high 20s  to familiars weak to fire in the rooms.

I just finished a run today and I got 8:47  in game time. I lost track of the RTA because the game frozed on me, but the RTA was about 10-15 mins ahead of the IGT.
I'll upload it later since  I haven't gotten sleep in a while lol

any news on that upload Kae, I'd imagine it'll take some time.
I tried uploading it this morning but it says it would take over 3000 minutes. I might just try to stream the run, and then it would be in the twitch VOD. I'll  make a test stream tonight

So I'm not sure when or how it happened, but I managed to get an accessory to go in the wrong slot on my familiar?  Anyone have any ideas?  Maybe this could be extended to move weapons and armor into the wrong slots (ie: have 3 weapons equipped)?

That's very interesting. I'm going to try that out, and I'll get back to you if anything happens or not

update: I've tried doing what I could to put equips into different slots, but I couldn't  :/
It'll be cool to have 3 weapons on one familiar; would really speed up some bosses.

I tried streaming the VOD, and it's really really laggy up to the point where it's unwatchable.
I guess I'll try upload it on Youtube, but I might put on some commentary since I'm going to mute the ingame sound since the audio is distorted ):

that is my homework for this week (:
Do you have any idea how that happened? I couldn't replicate it either. Was that badge supposed to be on that familiar? And did you equip after purchase or later? If triple weapons were possible, then that would be pretty huge for the game. There really needs to be some combat oriented glitch that we can exploit.

I'm waiting for KaeLynne to reveal the 9 hours strats since that is much better than what I got.
Counter attacking isn't an exploit, but it can definitely be abused in boss fights.
Like I said before, boss fights are the biggest time savers in the game.
I  used counter attack strats and I got a PB (8:47)

sub 7 is very achievable with the route/strats I used, it just comes down to executing boss fights, and not dying 4 times like I did in my run :3
I counter attacked alot in my run as well, but I still didn't get near your time. It seems required really to have a chance at low levels. One annoying thing about counter attacking is, as far as I know, you have to previously attack the boss to 'lock on' before you can counter.

Did you skip mobs using any of the various methods in your run? If not, I guess leveling is definitely faster.
It would be helpful if you outlined your route, especially any familiars, interesting strats, farming etc.
Yea I usually cast a spell when the boss is coming at me, then when I'm at attack range, I can counter.
My run had no farming at all. I skipped most mobs.  I only killed certain mobs.

Is your time IGT?

Yes, the badge was supposed to be on him.  I bought it from the shop in Castaway Cove and equipped it from the shop menu.  I didn't think to pay attention to it until much later when I wanted to equip a scale and didn't see the spot to do it.  I clicked on the badge and noticed it was pointing at scales.  I made an extra save right there so I'd be able to preserve the bug.
