Would a run using no wrap and no item be a any% or a low%?

I think it would count as an Any% but we haven't got Super Mario World to do a Warpless run yet (that does not use the Star Road shortcut).

It can't be a low% because the cannon warps makes the game even shorter.

When you say "no item" it doesn't use the SMB3 Overworld item system. It uses a tweaked Super Mario World item reserve system. The Red ? Boxes / Hammer Bros are not 'lost forever' when you collect their items.

Ok.
When I said No Item , I meant no power up - like no mushroom, no blue shell e.tc

None of the Mario platforming related runs on SDA has a 'no-power up run' category. Not counting AndrewG's SMB1 NES run (which was perfect sense not to collect any power ups).

I just done segment 6 and it was quite a pain to do.

The first 5 exits were great, the 6th exit (2-A Normal exit) only had notiable slowdown which was 3 Mario seconds slower than my average but I've kept it mainly because the previous 5 exits were like a 9/10 performance whilst this one was a 6-7 out of 10. Also the Red ? Box was in a good position for me to manipulate for segment 8.

After saving the game I pressed the A buttons one too many times that Luigi enters 2-2. All I'm saying is that saving the game from the Red Mushroom house is my 'segment ends here' moment.

Edit: After watching the run it does look pretty good. The 6th Exit (2-A Normal exit) only had 2 notable minor mistakes and when I say
Quote:
3 Mario seconds slower than my average
I mean I was only 3 seconds off from my personal best.

Segment 8-10 is done and World 2 is cleared.... except the Alt exit on both 2-4 & 2-Castle but they'll be done on the next 2 segments.

Segment 11 will be luck based on both levels
3-A will have one coin trapped in blocks, the only way to get it is (in a speed running way) is luck from that enemy. The rest of the level plays as normal.

Then... I go back to 2-4 and pick up a Mini shroom from the Red ? Block (it's 1/4 for that to happen).

If I feel like the performance was good enough then I save the game from the Green mushroom house post. The trick on 2-Castle Alt exit is pretty difficult.

EDIT: Holy crap, I've just found a way to get the first coin on 3-A without any waiting at all Cheesy
DS Dictator
Done segement 11 and I never realise until now that the Red ? Boxes are an absolute pain.
Both 3-A and 2-4 Alt exit can be improved by 1 in-game second but the chances of:

The water enemy on 3-A dropping bombs on the right location (I say 1/8) + the Red ? Box moving to 3-Tower (1/3) and the Mini Shroom obtained 2-4 (1/4)

A chance of all 3 lucky events happening is around  0.009375%

In my attempt:
3-A : had water enemy dropping bombs on the right spot & finished course at 334
World Map: The red ? box moved to the 2nd fastest spot (not on 3-Tower)
2-4 : Got the mini shroom (most important) from the Red ? Box and finished at 375

Pretty good, it nearly costed me 2 nights of 1.5 hours of attempts to even get a mini shroom on 2-4.

I've also checked my route plan and it seems like my runs has 41 segments instead of 39. At least Bowser is on Segment 40.
Seems like this tun is going well cant wait to see it.  Grin
DS Dictator
It's going to be good, trust me.

I'll tell you something interesting (and bizzare).
On 2-Castle the 2nd room, the part where you hit the orange ? Switch. You don't have to go underneath the platform. Instead, you can do a duck jump and 'Zip' through a wall.

(glitch happens at 0:25)

The strange thing about it, is that the glitch doesn't work when you enter the room as Mini form, which happens in my latest completed segment (12). It's one of the biggest bizzare reasons why the glitch doesn't work I've experienced so far.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I was hoping someone would do a 100% run of this some day.  This is going to be awesome.
Maybe there's more useful zipping?

DS Dictator
I remembered that zip unfortunately it isn't useful and it's much harder than the Zip in 2-Castle, in fact I can't even get it to work (US & JAP versions only??).

I'm likey to split up my next segment because the level with loads of pipes and piranha plants (3-B) is very hard to do in a recording position (playing it normally is quite easy). 3-C is quite easy and after that level I'll save the game by paying the 1-up shroom house.

I've noticed that the rocking mushroom in 3-2 has random movement which could easily screw up a long segment (if I didn't use the optional save that is). So now there is going to be 42 segments overall :(.

Cleared segment 17, it wasn't perfect but a very good attempt otherwise.

4-A (3 Star Coins)
* There is one time saver but it's seriously luck based and I don't know how to manipulate/trigger the time saver. It involves bouncing 2 koopas after the checkpoint to enter the first pipe without even touching the rope, it saves 3 in-game seconds but there is a low 1/20 chance of the koopas appearing in the right spots (to bounce on immediately).

4-Ghost (Normal exit & 2 of 3 Stars)
* Very good attempt, managed to get both the 2nd star coin and entering the pipe during 1 hit of the Red Switch.

4-5 (3 Star Coins)
* A sloppy start that made me stop a couple of times, I did actually get damaged losing 1 second but I made up for it by performing a clever trick in the Touch screen underground section (3rd star coin) by chucking a Bob-omb at the right position to get the star coin while I exit the room. I finished the course at 310, 311 is bad since it would trigger the fireworks and summon a Red shroom house.

4-6 (3 Star Coins)
* So I used my reserved Fire Flower to become Fire Luigi and I kept Ground pumping Dorrie (the blue Sea ness monster a like) to the end of the course. I picked up a Fire Flower reserve before collecting the second star coin.

Buy Red Shroom House
Save

So overall levels 4-A & 4-5 can be improved easily whilst 4-Ghost and 4-6 were decent attempts.
I kept the green shroom house sign so that I can save near by the 4-Ghost when the Red ? Box lands on that course hoping to get a mini shroom (which is important for getting the last star coin & entering the Cannon to World 7).

EDIT:
Managed to get the most imporant timesavers in this segment and is now ~9 seconds faster.
I was thinking of manipulating a Red ? Box on 4-Ghost (for a future segment) until I realised that you won't be able to go pass the fastest route because it require some block bashing (which mini forms cannot do).
Wow you are getting through this very quickly, good job : ).
DS Dictator
I've done 3 new segments today. I've also split a segment after completing 4-4. It's mainly because I would need to do 2 water levels on the next segment.

Segment 18:
4-Castle (3 Star Coins)
Save

Segment 19:
4-4 (3 Coins and the Blue shell from roulette box).
Pay Giant Shroom house by 4-A
Save

Segment 20:
World 3:
3-1 (3 Star Coins)
3-3 (3 Star Coins)
Buy Megashroom house
Save

Segment 20 was the toughest of the 3 segments I did today.
Firstly both levels involves underwater swimming and they're not auto scrollers.

*There is some luck factor on both levels:
3-1 has the random positions of Cheep Cheeps during the touch screen section of the level.
3-3 contains Bloopers, the most annoying enemies on this level, the touch screen section is stupidly hard to speed through.

Oh yeah I must not get hit, because the Blue shell is effective underwater saving seconds and it has some use on 3-Ghost House (collecting a Star coin) so yeah.. I must not get hit at all on both 3-1 and 3-3.

3-3 has some small delays which was to manipulate the Blooper to go the opposite way.
Stupidly enough I forgot to turn around during the jump to the flag on 3-1 but the small delay of Red ? Boxes moving around made me continue the run.
DS Dictator
Wow segment 26 is the biggest luck fest so far and I've complete it with a good time.

I had to get a Mini Shroom on 5-Ghost to speed up the level (and to clear both exits too).
Then I had to get the Red ? Box or the spawned Hammer Bro (that comes in after completing the 2nd exit of 5-Ghost) to land on 5-B. If that doesn't work I used to restart the segment until I've found out yesterday that I could do another dead easy level which is 5-4 (an Auto scroller).

If neither of the overworld objects land on 5-B then I restart the segment.

Luckily for once it worked.

I did do an complete attempt on Saturday night but it was a bit sloppy at some parts. This one is 6-7 seconds faster when Luigi hits the 2nd flag. The run can be improved easily by the Wall Jump exploit as Mini Luigi but it requires 1 frame timing and it has to happen at least 15 times for an perfect time on both vists (which is near impossible and too unreliable to do as a human).
DS Dictator
Done segment 30 and it looks very promising. The next segment involves the infamous Liftless strat on 7-2

I've posted a few segments but they are obsoleted, slower versions. The faster versions are only available on the SDA published copy (& a verifier copy if you were to verify this run).

Segment 23 (first attempt & obsoleted)

Hey, I've been watching this thread for a while, and I'm very excited to see this run. I noticed you had posted a full route some time ago, but I think it's outdated now, what with the changes you've made. Anyway, I was hoping you would post the updated version sometime soon, or if it's already posted somewhere, you could tell me where.

Good luck with the rest of your run, I can't wait to see it.  Wink

Someone planned on doing a Super Mario World power-up less speedrun. Basically low% for SMW. Maybe NSMB could have a low%? Not sure what that would consist of though. low% isn't necessarily suited for all games. Like you said: SMB really can't have low% even though the run could be considered a low% run.

Also, awaiting your finished run! Cheesy

I've updated the route on this page starting from segment 31/44.
I tend do sometimes split segments because I don't want to get hit 1 too many times and 6-Tower 1 is pretty tough to do as a 4th level of the segment.

Segment 31:
7-2 (3 stars, use Mini shroom for huge timesaver)
7-3 (3 Star Coins)
7-4 (2 of 3 star coins and main exit)

Segment 32:

Pay Green mushroom House (save because 6-2 has a very difficult time saver)

Segment 33:
6-2  (3 Star Coins)
6-Tower 1 (3 Star Coins)
SAVE

Segment 34:
6-3 (3 Star Coins) Mega shroom does finish the level faster but it costs around 20 seconds getting the Shroom from World 2 making it slower overall.
6-4 (3 stars coins, finish as small with Fire Flower on Reserve).
6-Tower 2 (3 Star Coins)
SAVE only if the Red ? Box is on 6-5 (water stage)

World 7 part 2
Buy Megamushroom house and save (in World 7)

Segment 37: VERY HARD SEGMENT for endurance especially on 7-6
Get Mega shroom
7-5 (Alt + 2 Star coins (Use Mega Mushroom))

7-7 (3 Star Coins, Auto Scroll stage, power up for an easier 7-6 normal exit attempt).
7-6 (Star B+C + Normal)
Save by paying Green mushroom house (In world 7)

Segment 43:
8-8 (Coin A -> C -> B for an easier exit and possibly save time, a luck based level from those volcano rocks).

Save

Segment 44:
8-Bowser’s Castle. (3 Coins)
Credits
Save
Show menu that it has 2 stars next to file, then stop recording.

Segment 45:
Buy all Touch Screen Backgrounds with your last 80 star coins
Luigi/Mario’s victory dance
Save Game, reset to show proof of 100% file.
Then load  that file and show all 8 worlds 100% cleared (as proof for the viewers).
Stop recording.

Edit: I've found very tight time saver on 6-2 that it saves around 10 in-game seconds!! I'm very likely to split the segment now and if the Giant Shroom route for 6-3 doesn't save time overall (including the World map and getting the giant shroom) then that will be less fustrating.

Edit 2:
For those who never played the game and saw 6-2 here it is:
(check 1:58 to see the location of the very tough wall jump for early Star coin 2).

I've noticed that if I mess it up once, I can still do it again and won't lose much time due to the nature of the tides (I 'll basically catch up when the Tides are low in the later half of the stage).

Also, I saw those 2 videos of segment 23 (I think it was 23) and segment 30. I gotta say, those videos were absolutely amazing. I learned quite a few tricks from those videos.

Good luck with your run!

I'd like to suggest an improvement to 1-1, unless you've already made this adjustment (I only saw the test run on the old skool DS)

If you wait to get a Mushroom until you go down the pipe, you can hit the ? block in the underground to spawn the Mushroom, bounce off of the Goomba down below, walljump to collect the coin, then ground pound to kill the goomba and get the Shroom, then ground pound cancel before hitting the ground, exit pipe and continue as normal.

In doing so, you allow for slightly faster movement in the area where you were crouching and slowed down by the red Koopa as well.

Although the links I've posted are TASed, they are slightly different in my SDA run:

1-1 starts 0:55

The only things I didn't do were:
* The ground pound part near the 2nd coin, in the underground part, a precise duck jump is required.
* The stair jump without slowdown (but this is harder than SMB).

So my new run will be different but more importantly less sloppy than the test runs back in May 2008 :).

I'm able to tie your TAS of this stage with my strat, and getting caught on the stairs...meaning if a perfect stair jump is executed, it's beatable.

Nice, I get the idea on the underground section as it doesn't require a backtrack to get the mushroom.
Too bad I can't do the first segment again, too many consistency issues such as:

* Score
* Number of lives
* Objects positions on the world map (Red ? Box and Hammer Bros)
* Number of coins
* Current form (Small, Super, Fire, Shell or Mini).
