got the ps3, happy with it. deus ex human revolution is awesome.

PSN accounts (if you wanna add me):
EU: DJS1911 nadbmal
US: lambdan1911
JP: katzemaru99

i went ahead and ordered a ps3 super slim 12gb as it was on a pretty nice sale here in sweden. and since i have never had a ps3, and i have barely touched one, i have some speedrunner questions:

1) i know there is the PS Store where you can get old ps1/ps2 games like 'Final Fantasy 7' and 'Castlevania: SOTN'. now, since i am in europe, if i go ahead and buy SOTN (or any other ps1/ps2 game), will i get the PAL(50hz) version, or the full-speed NTSC(60hz) version? if 50hz version, how can i get 60hz version?

2) how do you pay on the PS store? credit card? paypal? redeemable codes?

3) can i go ahead and import some japanese/u.s. games, will they work? from my googling it seems like they will, but i wanna be sure.

4) is installing games "a must"? i know this helps a ton on the 360, but how much does it help on the ps3? since its only a 12gb flash memory in this super slim, i will probably throw in a 250gb 2.5" hdd i have lying around.

5) game recommendations. this is a pretty free for all one, but what good games have i missed out on? i currently have 'Deus Ex Human Revolution' and (maybe) 'Prototype' coming in. 'The Last Of Us' seems like a really cool game, but i want that game to drop in price a bit. and i have pre-ordered 'GTA V'. but any other recommendations? im pretty much open to whatever, except anime/games with tons of unskippable cutscenes, although i would like to play through a RPG one day, so if there is a fast-paced RPG, that'd be great.

thats all for now. thanks for all the questions you can answer.

1) They're 50hz. Make alternate users on your PS3, tie them to US/JP/Etc PSN accounts on new mails, buy their PSN funds online one way or another and you'll get the 60hz versions. I expect us to get converted to 60hz versions if they ever go and convert these PSN-based titles to run on the PS4 later on.

2) PayPal should be up everywhere now, but codes and flat out credit-card use is possible world-wide as long as the regions match. Just remember to make it so that you have to enter your password to check out whatever you clicked, to prevent mistakes. They happen.

3) Yep, no region locking on anything but Persona 4 Arena

4) No, most later games will want to have a few gigs installed though. Bound to run out of room on that 12er unless you concentrate on 1-2 games at a time.

your answer to 2) is a bit confusing. is paypal available on psn? nevermind, i googled, which i shouldve done in the first place. thanks anyway Smiley

also i read around something about PS3 not having pal60 support in SD modes, which means i will have to play in 50hz on my CRT? do you know anything about this?
Audio-guy. twitchtv:ohgoddamnit
For PS1 titles on disc, or the ones you buy over EU/AUS/NZ PSN, it's all 50hz. Terrible 50hz. Only used it on a CRT a little while in 2009 (quickly bought a second HDMI monitor so I could treat it better) but yeah, below 720p it's going to be 50hz.

damn that sucks. oh well, i guess its silly of me to use a HD console with a CRT, but still... i just dont like gaming on HDTV's. maybe ill try to think of a way to hook it up to my monitor.

edit: im thinking of using HDMI -> DVI for video to my monitor, and then using the RCA/Composite cables for audio. would this work?
Audio-guy. twitchtv:ohgoddamnit
Yep yep, as long as there's HDCP support in the monitor you'll be fine, else you need to kill the HDCP signals one way or another. I live in Västerås and have a spare HDCP-killer but it's a 500kr unit meant for capture cards, monitors shouldn't need more than a 200kr splitter of the right kind to solve that problem.

i have a hdmi -> dvi adapter from my mac, that i can try with the ps3 when i get it. ill probably have to get a HDMI switcher though, because my mac uses the DVI port on my monitor.
right now my setup is: mac -> HDMI to DVI-adapter -> DVI Cable -> Monitor, so i think ill have to do something like this:

Djs the disc's themselves may be region locked if you use those in your Console. But anything from the stores are fine. I have a few jps1 games that will not work in my na ps3. but if I get the psn that version is fine

When it comes to importing game discs, I'm 99% sure all regions are the same so you can import PS3 games fine. HOWEVER PS1 games are still bound by the same regions as their original counterparts. Meaning PS1 Japanese discs only work on Japanese PS3's. US PS1 discs only work on US PS3's etc.

*Looks above* Ok maybe 1% of PS3 games aren't importable. I'd check a import site like Play-Asia if you want to be safe as they tend to list region locking on newer systems.

E: Apparently I need to look not as above as the one I looked at above.

not being able to import ps1 games is fine probably, ill probably get most, if not all, ps1 games i want, from the US PS store.

its pretty neat that you can import games from wherever (in 99% of the cases), the only thing that bums me out is that a PAL ps3 is stuck on 576i only as a SD resolution, that feels really retarded.

edit: 3d dot game heroes seems amazing.

No CRTs manufactured after 1995 were incapable of PAL60, so I think wanted to be super safe and really supportive. Would have been nice to have 480i 60hz for an option though. FF7 at 50hz is actually like being knee deep in a swamp, as much as I respect that game and think that everybody in gaming should play it, it's a pile of 50hz junk that makes me sad I'm taking so long in buying a 60hz version.

Thankfully the two upcoming consoles are all about digital output, hard 60. If you want to invest in one of those I recommend waiting for deals on monitors, shouldn't be too difficult grabbing a 24" 1080p HDMI for around 1000kr when the time comes. Got two cheap 1080p myself, going to have to get a third early next year for simultaneous PS3 and PS4 and computer action. Maximum nerdery.

// anecdotal addition regarding moving to modern display standards //

Gotta admit. Old family CRTs from 70s, 80s and 90s, if they continue to live, they become family members. Kids grow up with them, gaming, watching TV and films. My youngest sister made the switch from a 2000s buzzy CRT that took ten minutes to warm up and five minutes more to get colour, to a 42" LCD from a friend of hers. Her youngest son freaked out when he entered the living room after the exchange; "THATS NOT A TV, THATS NOT A TV", he was honestly upset because he thought TVs were like their old CRT, taking forever to become usable. That CRT had been there before he was even considered being made. He's settled down and accepted it now but heh.

What a wonderful demonstration that was of old hardware becoming family. They're not at risk of waking up to a living room on fire any longer. If any reader of this still uses their old beloved CRT - good on you! We'll welcome you into the mid-late 90's whenever you make the switch to an LCD, and try out a 120hz/144hz one  ;3

yeah i think i wanna play on my computer monitor (a benq g2220hd 21.5" 1080p) simply because my hdtv is too big, its a 32", which just feels too big imo, and it also is bad for gaming with its 25ms and i think it has some ghosting issues.

im trying to think of a way to make my monitor dedicated to the ps3, but im not sure how. maybe ditch the mac and go back to my pc which can use 2x VGA instead of 2x DVI... we'll see.

also yeah, im def getting FF7 on the US PSN. im just trying to think of an american address and email.

lol. alright that'll work Wink i think i can use my aim/aol email for that account. i also made a yahoo.co.jp email today for my future jp PSN account.

edit: oh yeah, i saw that battlefield 3 will be free for ps plus members this week. do you know of a way that i can get like a trial ps plus account, or is that included with the console?
Audio-guy. twitchtv:ohgoddamnit
PS Home during E3 had a special month long PS+ reward (minigames & quizes) that ended June 30th (it was the last day to apply the code). Got that rolling on one of my PS3 accounts. Would be nice if the console came with at least a half-month PS+ code.

i was thinking about doing something like https://www.facebook.com/SonyPlaystation/app_106681779474103 , only thing i wonder is if i can get the free game even though i only have 30 days, and if i will keep it when that period is over.
I want off the ride....
sadly no, you dont keep the stuff after the trial. The instant game collection is good for that month.

I love 3d dot game heroes. its a very good zelda clone (cause thats what it is). Its a bit brutal at times though (USE YOUR SHIELD).

If you haven't picked up vanquish thats really good (you probably have)

I really dont know what to say about other ps3 games outside of Double Dragon: Neon on the PSN.

Poor kids. They've been tainted by garbage that's lying around in the apartments. Even sadder is that they haven't had the chance to experience modern electronics for such a long time. To grow up with such old stuff... it breaks my heart that people keeps that garbage around - and ever worse, that kids have to ensure them in this modern world.
But maybe that's just me.

What you pick up from the PS+ IGC (or at least check out with, downloads can be cancelled) will remain flagged as downloadable for as long as you have an active PS+ subscription on account. If you're not a large consumer of games I'd think it over, 485 SEK a year's great for those who eat sleep live games but it's merely a delicious bonus for someone like me. (485 SEK is nothing even on my budget, but even then. Also you'll want to jam your HD in there ASAP (FAT32 format it beforehand?) if you're going PS+, it fills the heck up!

I'm giving her sons some spare Huawei Android smartphones when they get old enough for start owning their own phones. We tend to use things until they break in the family but she makes me look like I'm upgrading every year, she had pre N-Gage Nokias ready for them. They got their gaming start with the NES on purpose though. Give 'em a good start.

ok, thanks for the heads up about the ps plus thingy, i probably wont bother then, but we'll see.

Mystery: if i personally had kids, that liked video games, i would probably let them play some nes/snes/n64 stuff on a CRT, just to show them how it was for me growing up. for me its all about the nostalgia, and when i play a game, even if its HD-new, on a HD-screen, it just feels wrong. i dont really get the "gaming feeling". but maybe that's just me...

EDIT: okay got the ps3 now, and i put the 250gb hdd in it (https://twitter.com/DJS__/status/353137026880647168). works great.
i've also made 3 PSN accounts, 1 for eu, 1 for us, and 1 for jp. all went fine.

okay, so as it turns out to my dissappointment, if you try to pay on the PSN using paypal, it wont work. psn will say it was unsuccessful, and paypal will say it was cancelled, if youre not registered in the same country as you are tryign to buy from.

so, would this work for me? http://www.play-asia.com/PlayStation_Network_Card_US_20_for_US_network_only/paOS-13-71-io-49-en-70-3y12.html
Audio-guy. twitchtv:ohgoddamnit
Oh, paypals and accounts all have to be of the same region for it to work. I've used PA a bunch for Japanese pointscards for when my normal Japanese contacts have been unreachable, they give the code instantly upon taking the payment and should be fine for US points as well.

yeah ok. ive used play-asia before for a gamecube controller so i know they're good. why do they want my phone number though, when doing a digital order?

reason im asking is that, once i ordered xbox live gold from a german ebay seller, and he said my mom (because it was on her name) needed to take a pic of herself + drivers license + order number, so the seller knew she was the one who wanted the code. i dont want play-asia to do  the same shit.
Audio-guy. twitchtv:ohgoddamnit
It's for security, bank-contract dealing. I tried to order from a reputable camera shop in NY and they wanted me to fax my card in, including the CVC2 code area. They're still reputable but jeeze.

When it comes to buying on eBay and getting that, I think it's to prevent scumbag buyers from doing the terribly common "dear paypal, item did not arrive/wasbroken/seller lied" song and dance that screws tens of thousands of sellers every year.
torch slug since 2006
oh, so they only want it so they can show it to the bank like : "hey we got a phone number, no problem." ?
