So the game is supposed to be released tomorrow for PC, PSN and WII U. Xbox not till Sep 11th.
Is anyone planning on speed running it? The game has gotten some bad reviews but I am planning on buying it for the PC and learning how to speed run it and perhaps have some races.
Thread title:
Konkey Dong
I'm super excited for it, and I'm a huge fan of the original game so I'll run it and learn it.

As far as reception goes, I haven't heard any negative feedback on the game at all.
I've never speed ran a game before but im interested in starting with ducktales!

So here are my initial thoughts after completing a run on Wii U.

- I think sub 46 is possible, possibly even sub 45, maybe sub 44
- My playthrough was at 48:19 on Easy with all Heart Containers, with a couple of boss screw-ups and 1 death on the last level, which cost about 10 seconds
- I also went the wrong way during Transylvania, so that cost about 30-60 seconds
- The game seems to only record in-game, so it may not include cutscene time OR time you spent playing if you got a Game Over
- The trickiest pathing I think is the Amazon, since it's got a collect-a-thon at the start
- The Himalayas also has a slight pathing issue when going from part 1 to part 2 (I'm not sure what is faster)
- Bosses still need the same # of hits on each difficulty level to beat them (which is 12)

Beyond that, it seems VERY straightforward.
For Fun! For GLORY!!
This will be my first speedran game ever, and I want to seriously try and top the leaderboards. First I gotta stop wanting to collect everything. X3

If I get sub 46 even, I will seriously consider putting it up to run it at a marathon.

Hard Mode differences/similarities:
- Enemies still do 1 heart of damage per hit like on Normal
- All Cakes (Full Heals) are replaced by 1ups
- Bosses still take 12 hits to kill
- (I THINK) patterns come out quicker from bosses on Hard, so it "might" be faster to do Extreme assuming patterns are faster there, which I haven't played since you have to beat Hard to unlock it
- On Hard, you do not get a Map
- Heart Containers don't spawn on Amazon, the Mines or the Moon on Hard, and are replaced by additional Treasures (which I think might be from DuckTales 2)

Finished a casual speedrun on Easy. RTA is 50:28, which is from when I got control of level 1 to when I lost control on the last level. Not bad for 3 deaths and some meh RNG from the bosses. Gonna work on it some more.

Oh, and just checked. Game time was 45:49, which made #1 on the WiiU leaderboard! Cheesy
I've discovered a helpful, yet weird glitch on the Magica (Transylvania Boss Fight).  Considering you can 3-cycle her (4 hits per cycle), you only need 11 hits to beat her if you get hit once instead of the regular 12.  Very strange glitch, but I don't know if it's repeatable.

As a follow-up, boss patterns don't speed up with difficulty.  However, if you die on the Moon in Extreme mode with all 3 parts, it puts you back at the start of the stage, so that's a nice little death trick.
For Fun! For GLORY!!
Well, I'll stick with Easy. The extra health helps me do more damage 'boosts' and get through ugly parts quicker rather then stop and wait.

And new Game time - 43:40, RTA - 48:12. It was deathless with 2 safety hearts.
But now I'm 2nd on the leaderboard with some guy called Bubbleman with a Game time of 42:57. I will not be 2nd like this! Angry
Which levels did you get hearts from?  I'm going to guess Amazon and the Mines.
For Fun! For GLORY!!
Yup. Right on the way without that big a detour. But if I can cut those out it's 20 seconds. But then I'd have to take Himalayas more carefully.

I think I've got Himalayas planned out in my head.  Take the first rope down, after the first part, go left and down, then right and then back to Bubba(?).  The only thing you have to worry about are the Goats, a couple of spiders and the falling icicle part.  I still don't know what I should do with the Amazon though.

And I'm pretty discouraged right now as I died n the VERY LAST PART of Extreme Mode.  The climb got me.  You have to find a shortcut there (which I think I know where one is) or you won't be able to progress later on.  UGH...2+ hours down the drain for nothing.
For Fun! For GLORY!!
That's what I did to get the parts.
On Amazon, I took the lower path, then backtracked across the upper path, then went on with the level.
And Shortcut on the final climb? I don't get what you mean. :\
In the final level after you beat the boss you have a climb with Magica and then a Lava escape.  I died on the last set of chains for the lava escape 3 times in a row.
It doesn't come any closer than that.  It was going to be like a $35 million run, too. :/
For Fun! For GLORY!!
Oh that. But how could you shortcut that, except maybe skipping a chain somewhere?
Yeah, there are 2 near equal-lengthed chains on the final stretch. If you go for the one on the left you won't have time to get down and pogo up since the lava's speed increases exponentially.

And for those wondering, Extreme Mode is an all or nothing playthrough.  If you don't beat it, you lose all of your progress.  It has to be beaten in 1 sitting.  Hence, I got a giant "GAME OVER" screen.
For Fun! For GLORY!!
Ouch. I don't think I'm hardcore enough for that. :|
It's not actually all that hard considering you have to beat Hard Mode to unlock it, which is easier than Normal since they give you a buttload of 1ups.

Here's a boss strategies
Dracula Duck
Red Phase: Stand about a quarter over from the middle on either side. That way the bats won't go to the extreme sides of the arena. The bats will always leave an open area for you on the opposite half of the stage from where you're on.
Yellow Phase: Just go to the opposite end each time, he'll always follow you there to some capacity. An extreme leap happens if you time it just right.
Green Phase:  Just start on one end of the arena and slowly make your way over to the other.  If you're good enough he won't fire from the opposite direction.

Wilderbeast?
Just always get behind it and you won't have to worry about it except for when it jumps straight up in the air.  After every hit, just get behind it and you're home clear.

I'm going to take the rest of the night off from this and let that Extreme run loss permeate in my brain for a while.
For Fun! For GLORY!!
Ok have fun with that. I might try another run before bed. Night Broly. :3
The Top of the Bottom
I'm having so much fun with this game! I just started my playthrough on Hard, but does anyone know what the different difficulties bring? I know that Extreme is a "no continue" style mod, but what makes Easy and Normal easier than Hard?
For Fun! For GLORY!!
Easy - Infinite lives, more checkpoints, and hits take half hearts. (I use this so I have more health to do 'boosts')
Normal - You have lives, and hits now take a full heart. I think also you only get checkpoints at beginning of level sections.
Hard - Only 2 health upgrades are available in the whole game, and no more cakes. But cakes are replaced with 1-ups.
Extreme - No continues, and if you die you go all the way back to the start of the level.

As you climb difficulty, boss patterns are harder and faster, so on Extreme it may make bosses faster.
Also as you do harder difficulties, money gets multiplied after you complete a stage, but in a speed run, that's of course a moot point. Tongue

Extreme may be the best mode to run because it may have some useful death warps in Transylvania (takes you one screen away from the giant mirror), Himalayas, and the Moon. I've only tested Transylvania so far. The problem is that it's probably the riskiest to run because unintended deaths are usually huge time losses or a Game Over.

Edit: Death warping after collecting all the pieces in Himalayas on Extreme difficulty isn't viable because the game checkpoints you after the Bubba cutscene.
Edit 2: Death warping after collecting all the pieces in the Moon totally is, though.

Difficulty Differences:
Easy - Infinite Lives, Damage consumes half a heart, Heart Containers in Amazon, Mines, and the Moon, Hard Pogo forced Off, Most of map already filled out, Bosses sometimes drop health, Lots of health drops, Generous Checkpoints, Mrs. Beakly item drops (2 ice cream, 1 cake)
Medium - Limited Lives (Game Over takes you to level select), Damage consumes full heart, Heart Containers in Amazon, Mines, and the Moon, Hard Pogo toggleable, Map fills out as you travel through the stage with objectives always displayed, Boss phases speed up or get harder as they get closer to death, Lots of health drops, Stricter checkpoints, Mrs. Beakly item drops (1 ice cream, 1 cake, 1up)
Hard - Limited Lives (Game Over takes you to Level Select), Damage consumes full heart, Secret Treasures in Amazon, Mines, and the Moon, Hard Pogo toggleable, No map, Boss phases speed up or get harder as they get closer to death, Less health drops but more frequent 1ups, Invincibility item replaced with health, Stricter checkpoints, Mrs. Beakly item drops (2 ice cream, 1up), Mrs. Beakly does not appear in Transylvania and Himalyas
Extreme -  Limited Lives (Game Over takes you to Level Select), Damage consumes full heart, Secret Treasures in Amazon, Mines, and the Moon, Hard Pogo forced On, No map, Boss phases speed up or get harder as they get closer to death, Very few health drops and 1ups, Invincibility item replaced with health, Very strict checkpoints, Mrs. Beakly item drops (2 ice cream, 1up), Mrs. Beakly does not appear in Transylvania and Himalyas

Extreme does have some checkpoints, depending on where you die.

A helpful Death Warp is dying after you get all 3 Gizmoduck parts since you get sent back to the start of the level, which is exactly where you need to go after you get them.  This can save up to a minute I imagine.

For an Extreme run, you'd most certainly have to get the Heart Containers though, and considering where the one in the Himalayas is, that assuredly will waste a good amount of time.
For Fun! For GLORY!!
Checked the leaderboard again for WiiU runs. Bubbleman's game time is 41:47! O.o
So if Extreme is faster, that's what he's doing. But that's super risky being that dying costs minutes if in the wrong spot. So if someone runs Remastered in a marathon, Extreme is out of the question.
I'm not really seeing a major difference between Hard and Extreme on boss fights though.  I'd also say that Hard is easier than Normal with all the 1ups the game gives you.  It seems like Extreme is just Hard Mode with fewer 1ups and checkpoints and no saving to me.  For Runs and Marathons, that should suffice.

I should send that guy a PM through Miiverse to find out what difficulty he's playing on.
