Anyone out there running this or trying to run it?

Been playing on and off now for like 2 months trying to get good enough at it to run and trying to figure out what works best, items to get/skip, etc.

I can breeze through the first two worlds, but the third is a total PITA. Wouldn't mind getting with others who are trying to either share/learn more about the mechanics of the game.

I'm actually working on doing some preliminary routing of this between Metroid II runs. One interesting thing I found is that Armor by itself apparently doesn't determine your defense power like you'd expect. See here for an example of what I mean--in both files, I have the Strongest Armor. My guess is that you either have to collect the relevant Medallion (In this case, Medallion #6), or Shields as well as Armor somehow influence your defense.

Anyway, I saved the entire 4-hour cast to my Videos page, so you can watch me stumble through part of World 3 and bomb some walls in the first four dungeons if you're bored and have a free half a day.

I haven't been collecting the armors or shields. I haven't yet found a need to do so. The swords were the only thing I was going for as they normally aren't out of the way or they are only like a screen out of the way but they are needed in my eye based on how much more quickly you can kill bosses. Armor is usually out of the way.

Though I guess I've only been practicing as Any%.

World 3 is where I am and still trying to decide and figure out which way is faster to run that world and I think, like the first two, doing 6 first and then 5 is going to work the best. though 5 has a sword upgrade but the shoes make the boss of 5, well and your movement speed, a lot faster. I have to test some things still.

I've also been segmenting based on medallion. Pretty much from start temple to crypt, to picking up medallion and warp back to start temple.

Ok, so you are on the Wii, wonder if there is some kind of weirdness between the wii version and the actual TG16 version?

I'll have to play around with the armor just to see as well. I'm on the actual Turbo playing.

I'll start recording when my ezcap thing gets here.

That could be, too.

And yeah, my initial thought was to skip the shields but grab some of the armor, since I ultimately plan to do the game single-segment. Depending on what I find out about how Armor works, though, that plan may need modification.

Also, do you know if you need the Strongest Armor and Shield to hurt Dirth at the end? I know you need the Strongest Sword; he just doesn't take damage otherwise. I know my question sounds dumb, but Ys 1 & 2 on the TG-CD made it so you needed ALL of the Silver Equipment to hurt Dark Fact at the end of Ys 1, for instance.
well, in all honestly, I haven't actually finished the game yet Smiley

I would assume the armor and shields are optional.

The armor, at least for me, is in the air once I hit world 3. Though world 3 is do-able with out it, and damage taken is often just enough to make it hurt even more. It makes getting from A to B more or less luck based as trying not to take damage sometimes leads to added time.

Single segment is also on my radar and I have planned slightly for it in certain ways over the low segmented way I am trying to do it now. (Trying to keep segments to a minimum) Right now the only single segment differences for me are taking the free potion at the start and possibly going out of the way to buy or get a new potion in the event that I used one.

I also added in the plan to stop at the save areas nearish to each crypt in the event things go poorly (but that seems more of a marathon run addition)

Heh, it's fine, I haven't finished routing out the game yet (I've beaten it a total of twice; once about 10 years ago, and once earlier this year) myself, so it's cool. From what you're saying, it sounds like there's some other factor with the damage calculations that we're not considering (Or the armor isn't a straight 50% damage reduction from suit to suit like I think it is)--from what I can tell, you should be getting destroyed by only having the default armor in World 3 (I'm talking in the neighborhood of 2-3 hits before you die).

Anyway, once I finish mapping out the rest, I'll have to see what I can do about more serious routing/figuring out how the (*&$ armor and shields actually work.
I'll ghetto record some stuff if you want to see what I'm up to in the meantime while I await my new Ezcap
i have considered this at some point ill steal any good routes that come about , was a good blind , and i tend to like turbo g games.

Quick notes on the whole Armor thing: It's not beating Level 6 that gets you the defense boost, nor is it also grabbing the Strongest Shield. I'm honestly confused now, but will keep testing. Unfortunately, I think I saved with the Strongest Shield equipped, which means I'll have to go back through my broadcasts and get a password from before I did so to test whether you can hurt Dirth without it.
started routing as well got tired of waiting to steal routing, and yea I dont ever see a reason to do the first dungeon in a zone first when the second has a useful upgrade or useful items along the way , such as fire rod, shoes, etc. skipping bronze armor is feasible , and waiting till steel.
found some maps maps are cool http://www.chrismcovell.com/gamesillust.html will prolly draw all over them now, possibly a few times.

Not sure if you knew about these yet...

bombs are gonna be the difference in a good run, having enough and drop wise, word of caution oddly a bomb refill will give u max bombs and raise cap however, if u have a current of 0 it will read cap and in reality leave you with none till u find at least one. the early quick kills are prty easy but the later ones require good vitality health for flame rod such as dung 8 and 7 boss / crab. dung 8 boss only gets to split once if u get the setup right.(this does require getting one vitality upgrade from zone 1 thou to be possible) and no u dont need best shield or really any shield at all to beat game thou one is free by quickest path.
and rough segments seem to be , start of zone 3 - thru dung 6, start of zone 4 thru dung 8, because of the need for high health and the general madness.  *still no setup for Cerberus turtle thou, only one*

Area                 Task           Boss and condition

land sphere-    get bomb and medicane guy - get flame rod - get life upgrade
dungeon 2-      2 bombs get sword         Shank in pattern health n/a
dungeon 1-      1 bomb         Shank up troll around shank
sub spehere-    get rainbow drop
dungeon 4-      (get armor)? / medicine? 4 bombs Shank into wall then shank more
Sub sphere-      Bomb upgrade
dungeon 3-      shield along path, 6 bombs shank into north walls
water sphere-    bomb upgrade/ get shoes
dungeon 6-      3/ 4 bombs get armor (optional medicine) flame on health import
dungeon 5-      3 bombs (get sword?) Flame crab or shank use pattern
sky sphere- PAth well check potions make sure to be max
dungeon 8- health import get bell 3 bombs Disco inferno or death
Sky SPhere- GEt sword (Get life?) keep health up after upgrade
dungeon 7- 2/3  medicine optional FLame with percesion then yolo
Endgame - dont care about health if u can get him against north or south wall easily, otherwise hit 1 dodge

( ) - can probley be removed evuently or soon              *edited with route * so far
