So here is what I know about the game so far. Let's start with the good.
Good: Music is rather cool, left and right movements are good, and when in platforming sections only contact with enemies cause knock back. I also like the star background. I just like to look at stars in general.
Ok, now that is out of the way, lets got the the meat of this.
Lets start with controls. Now I have not done any TAS research on this, but this is what I have noticed. Everything is good control wise except one... The jump mechanic in the platforming sections. Yes, the most important thing in any platformer game and it is ROYALLY fuck up. This is my take on it, the game has a frame rule for when a jump can take place. And this frame rule is LARGE, like 10 frames large. Example: if I were to press jump on frame 3 of 10, I would have to hold jump for 7 frames before I actually jump. Now here is the fun part. If you are hit during them 7 frames, your jump wont happen. So I have this fun issue where I walk into pits VERY often.
Now the game also has i-frames for enemies... with no visual queue. So getting a rhythm for enemies is kind of fun. This is in both sections of the game.
So lets talk about the 2 sections of the game. We have the platforming section where you play the little space man that wants to be a member of the blue man group, and then you have the "combat" section where you play as a mechanical t-rex. Each play different and only the little blue man has jumping issues.
So each section plays very different. lets break them both down.
Combat: You go from section to section until you beat a boss, then proceed to let the blue man wander around. While moving along, you fight other dynos that also sometimes drop weapons, "E" (life), or "B" (shields), "P" (full weapon upgrade). I think the drops are fixed, more testing on that later. You start out with a simple punch with next to no hurt box. You can pick up Fire Balls, Launch Punch, Beam, or Bomb. Each weapon has 3 power levels. Starting at 1 and goes up when you collect your 2nd and 3rd consecutive weapon. If you have level 3 of Beam and pick up anything other than Beam, you will have the new weapon but at level 1.
-Fire Balls - acts like a simple gun. You can only have 1 shot on screen at a time. Level 2 shoots 1 shot strait and 1 shot at an upward angle. Level 3 Shoots and extra bullet in a downward angle. So far, this seems to be the strongest against bosses. With more testing, this may change.
-Launch Punch - Fires your fist out then returns like a boomerang. Can only have 1 shot on the screen at a time. Depending on how far it travels from you determines if it will come strait back or take a longer path back to you. Level 2 makes it faster and goes farther. Level 3... makes it stronger? I am unsure. This is my weapon of choice as of right now due to its movement pattern and ability to hit others enemies multiple times on the way back (given they are not on HUGE i-frames).
-Beam - A single firing lazer that passes threw enemies. Can only have 1 shot on screen at a time. Level 2 and 3 act just like level 2 and 3 of Fire Balls. Not much testing with this yet.
-Bomb - Avoid like the plague.
Platforming - You start out with a 3-way shot like level 3 of Fire Balls. As you level this weapon up, you can have more shots on the screen at a time up to 3. You go threw rooms then kill a metroid mother brain then back track. I complained about this above, not much else to say.
Yeah, I see where PJ is coming from (a guy who can jump out of his vehicle and all...), but at least Blaster Master has good jump mechanics (and level design, and music, and...). This game doesn't. I honestly think that the devs just got stoned and played a bunch of Contra when they thought of this one... "But we don't have muscled manly men, instead we have dinosaurs... IN SPACE!!!!" "Duuude, no wait, duuude, if it's in space they should be dinosaur MECHS!!" "Yeeaaahhhhh!"
I´ll hope see deathless run. This game actually very easy to beat because there is infinite amount continue like lot Ikari Warrior 3 & Guerilla War. I think making good speedrun is tough. Good luck with this.
I approve of Dynowarz attempts. So whole-heartedly it frightens me. And my girlfriend, my cat and my brother (thus making it a grand total of 2 people in NJ who have played Dynowarz). I'm probably going to smile all day after seeing this topic appear.
