I bet someone here could send you fraps...

It´s not worth to pay for.

$20 for the best video capture software out there is not that bad.  But then again I have a job.

I think it is $35, that's what it usually is, unless there is a deal, or unless your like me and just give it to people.

It's far from the best, It's really not that good.

What's not good about Fraps? Sure it drops your fps by a ton but any screen-capturing program will do that.

It's not that. Certainly not that. In fact, I recommend Fraps for several games, BUT NOT ALL GAMES. Fraps will not record all games, and if it does, it turns off if you don't move the mouse at least once every five seconds, which blows necessary cutscenes/loading screens. Camtasia is also a good (and probably only) alternative.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Wrong. Planet Game Cam is a screen capper that hardly slows FPS at all, even in graphic intensive games.

BTW it doesnt work in DX9 but thats ok because you can usually roll back newer games into DX8.1
ouch!

fraps is more then worth the 30 dollars. and yes it works in DX9, so don't bother getting that other one.

Fraps is the best out there right now. i got it over a year ago and have gotten my free updates everytime they come out. I Use it all the time for making music videos of games and its been more then worth the money! get it!!!

Try to speedrun an entire game and record with Fraps directly (and get it hosted here), then say that again.

Or how about recording it with Fraps, then compressing it with a free utility afterwards, like a sane person?

What a delightful topic. I can't say much, though, because I am using Fraps (the newest version, finally), to record my Postal 2 run, and it has done fairly well.
Speed is the key.
Yes, fraps works very good with some games, but very bad with some.  Sad

I checked it out myself after reading your post and this program did in fact slow down my FPS significantly.

Yes, it gets the job done but there are some problems with it. So far I have experienced everything from bugged hitboxes and altered physics to system crashes (these things ONLY occur when I run Fraps). If you don't experience these problems then thats great, but I do so I don't see this as a very good software.
Well i did get fraps, but it took a while to find someone nice enought to get it to me for a run i'm going to do.  I was very shocked though when i did a test segment just to see if it works or not, that a 12 sec recording was somewhere about 35 megs.

And that´s why VirtualDub exists.  Wink

Read the Recording & Compression FAQ for info.

The reason for the large files is that Fraps don't compress the video at all, you have a raw full quality media file to play with when encoding later.
Yeah, i know i read it and stuff.  But still i didn't want to do it segmented.  and well idk if i have enough room to not do it segmented.
