Hello there, I'm desperated and truly needing help on something:
I've got several problems when streaming to twitch, but one (the largest problem) is a problem that I can't see myself fixing on my own and trust me, I've tested many things in hope to make it work, but nthing ended up fixing the problem.

THE SET-UP:

I want to stream Metroid Prime played on my Wii. With a "Freeloader", I can play that NTSC Gamecube game on my PAL Wii. That works fine.

The capture device I use is called: hauppauge hd pvr 2 gaming edition plus
Along with that device that I bought is a free streaming software called StreamEez.
My PC is quite good/ fast/ very new BUT it's the only thing for gaming that is NOT in our basement unlike the consoles, the TV (for gaming only) and the laptop (for recording). Also, the internet connection from the laptop, which is in the basement, is way slower/ worse than that of the PC which is on 1st floor, just several meters away from the WLAN router.

THE PROBLEM:

When I record "normally", i.e. w/o streaming, the video is just fine, conataining
a) coloured video, b) in-game sound and c) my voice. Everything is fine.
It's via a composite cable, obviously, because it's a Wii and not a new console so I can't do it with a HDMI cable.

But when I set it to "share", log in to twitch with my username and  password, the video gets black-and-white. Why is that? I should mention that it does NOT go black and white when I'm streaming from my Wii U which is connected to the capture device via a HDMI cable.

My first guess was that it's something with the Composite cable that's wrong, but why can I record properly when/ if I'm currently NOT streaming and just recording "normally"?

My second guess was that my old Laptop was just too old (bought in 2008) to stream because it's not the fastest Laptop anymore, obviously. I wanted to test if either the laptop's CPU and/ or the internet connection isn't good enough. This is why I connected the Wii and the capture device to my PC on 1st floor. But it STILL goes black and white when I click on "share" and (want to) stream to twitch.

CONCLUSION:
- I'm desperate
- Neither I nor my father, who doesn't want to spent too much more time on that, can see themselves finding out how that black-and-white problem is to fix

QUESTIONS:
- Does anybody have a clue what else we could try?
- Does anybody have a suggestion?
- Does anybody know something about that black-and-white problem (I couldn't find anything on the internet concerning that problem)?
- Should I change streaming software from StreamEez to Open Broadcaster Software?
- Can anybody answer my question of why I can record AND/ OR stream from Wii U (via HDMI cable) with colours, but only record but NOT stream from Wii (via Composite cable) with colours?

I REALLY; REALLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP; HAVE BEEN INTO STARTING STREAMING FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS AND IT'S AWFUL NOT TO KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO TO FIX A PROBLEM!

I don't have your capture card but this sounds really familiar to what I experienced like 2 years ago with an AVerMedia card. I might be slightly off with my explanation but the black and white problem comes from playing an NTSC game with the PAL carrier signal (or something similar... I guess it's just basically PAL60). You can actually easily fix this by running Homebrew on the Wii and installing Any Region Changer. There you can change the video mode to NTSC (even give yourself an NTSC Wii). As to why it's in colour when recording, it's maybe because the capture program automatically detects PAL60 but the streaming program isn't as robust to do this. It is simply trying to decode NTSC_M and not PAL60.

So to sum it up, you have 2 options.

1. Install Homebrew/Any Region Changer and set Wii to NTSC mode.
2. The capture device filters for your device inside XSplit/OBS can probably choose PAL60 (or at least something to give you color). Give OBS a shot.

Personally option 1 is the best and ensures you are playing with a proper NTSC signal. It shouldn't bee too much of a problem to do this.

Thanks for your response. As I read your response, everything made sense, UNTIL I remembered that I also tried to play Super Mario Sunshine (GC, PAL) and Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii, PAL) on my PAL Wii. And as I wanted to stream those, it went black and white nonetheless. Hmm...
Now with 23% more reset!
Hi,

The HD PVR 2 is notoriously difficult to work with, but I think I had the same problem as you in the beginning. What I suggest is that you start using OBS and Arcsoft Showbiz via screen capture. That way you can play and record as you normally would, but stream the gameplay at the same time. If you didn't get Showbiz with your purchase, you can use Hauppauge Capture instead. Please PM me if you still need help.

Okay that sounds nice! I'll be back home at Thursday evening so I can tell then at the earliest if it now works. OBS really is supposed to be very good so I will definetly try it out as soon as I will have gotten back home.

I DID actually get Arcsoft Showbiz with the purchase.

Hmm... I wonder why that is, because it was supposed to be one of the best capture devices and they said it's also very good for streaming... On top of that, it also sometimes refuses to work properly but hey it's been used for like 700 - 1000 hours or even more since I bought it like 13 months ago... Hmm...

Okay, I will send you a PM if I still need help about something you told me but I will also post here if I encounter another problem. Thanks!! :-)

It seems to work fine now, with OBS. Fiiiinally! Thanks guys!

I still don't know what the hell is going on when streaming so that it turns black and white but SCREW IT. With OBS+Hauppauge instead of StreamEez+Hauppauge, everything works fine now.

Some adjustments still have to be done but right now I'm very happy that the basic things (COLOURED video, in-game aduio and my voice) are fine. The rest is secondary.
