So, I'm thinking of doing a speed run of Myst V.  It's the game where you wield a tablet and write stuff on it to solve the puzzles.

Anyone interested?

Here are a couple of notes to consider:
----------
To get to the end of each age (level), you eventually have to draw the symbol located on a platform and be teleported there.  The thing is, the symbol is always the same and you can just draw that symbol at the very start of the age and you'd bypass all of the puzzles.

-I WON'T BE DOING THAT on the run.-

I've tried it and it doesn't make for an interesting run.  I would be going through the ages and would solve each of the main puzzles until I actually visibly SEE the final symbol.

The game has a free-movement mode in addition to the normal Myst point-and-click movement.  I would be using the free-movement mode.

Another thing is that the cut-scenes aren't skippable, so I'd avoid as many as possible (Most are required).
--------

So, what do y'all think?

Hmm. Hmm. That's actually not very speedrunnish... I can understand it's not very interesting to watch but this isn't stuckgamer.com Grin So uhm, I don't know. Maybe you need to ask (PM) mikwuyma_vg about it. Your way also wouldn't be declared as a 100% run, I think. On the other hand, I'm not even sure if this would be accepted on SDA but it will most probably be accepted on adventure-speedruns.com and I think El_Nino wouldn't mind if you do it the way you want to do it, not sure though since it's supposed to be a SPEEDrun.

Is free-movement faster than point-and-click? Point-and-click can be very rapid Smiley
Speed is everything!
I'd be interested.
And I wish you good luck Wink

I can EASILY do both.

If I showed you what the short way is, all you'd see is a bunch of cut-scenes, hitting a switch or two, then beating the game.

As for the free-movement, it's MUCH faster than the point-and-click.  The point and click has slow, deliberate movements and rotations of the camera.  You wouldn't want it.
I'd watch it, go for it.

Do it, I am sure this gonna be watched by the people.

Go for it.

Yes, me for example Wink

Well that sounds like a good number of replies.  What I'll do is do the really quick version, but then also determine what a 100% version would look like.

This game's puzzles rely heavily upon symbols you're not supposed to have seen, yet.  The symbols don't change for every new game, even.  I guess Cyan (the developers) didn't care about putting replay value into it, since it's supposed to be the last of the Myst series.

That's why I mentioned not drawing symbols until I've "seen" them in the game.
What about Myst 3 Exile ? That is hardcore in my eyes.
Speed is everything!

Aaah yes I've played this a lot, a great game!

Indeed, but I don't have it anymore.  Tongue
Where do you live, I will send ya  Tongue

No thanks.  I don't really want to do Myst: Exile.

OK.

I'm having recording problems, because of Vista.  The Fraps isn't working and I'm trying to research a solution.  Until I figure out a solution, obviously recording isn't going to happen.

This is just a heads-up.

------------
EDIT:

Never mind.  Belay my last.  I just realized I can just use the SVIDEO output on my computer to go to my DVD-recorder.  Never mind me. :dur smiley:

Ohhhh Vista.

MS Vista lies in my book shelf because nothing runs on it. My Laser Printer isn't recognized by Vista. Sad

Try if ZD Game Recorder works in Vista.
It is a combination of Fraps and GameCam.

Funnily enough, Fraps just came out with a Vista-compatible version.

BUT,

I did a DVD-recorder test yesterday and the results were BEAUTIFUL. When this is finished, it will look very nice.
FRAPS? Moar liek CRAPS amirite?

FRAPS is just terrible. I would take hardware video capture over software video capture anyday. Not only is it easier, it's just that much less problematic.
#Casual
You are absolutely correct on that one.
Adventure Speedruns
Cool, that sounds great.

I am lloking forward to see, what you explained.

Well, I've thought it through and I don't think I'll be submitting a run to SDA.  The reasons for it are as follows:

1. Way too many, way too long cutscenes (90% of the game), all of them unskippable.  Who wants to listen to a bald man monologuing all the time?

2. I don't the actual gameplay is interesting to watch.  You'd see me drawing something, then being transported to the end of each level (age) -- only to hear another boring monologue.

That's about it.  I WILL, however, make a video and post it in this thread when I'm done with it.

You can skip most of the cutscenes with the space bar in Riven and Exile, doesn't that work for Myst V anymore? That's indeed a bad thing....
#Casual
Well, here's the "fast play-through" video.  It's not perfect, but it wasn't meant to be an official submission anyway.  The volume's a bit low...

Too bad you can't skip all the cutscences, it would be easily 70% faster Grin .

I've also planned speedruns of Myst (~1:20min.), Riven(~10min.) and Exile (~21min.) the last days. You need to do all puzzles in Exile, though. But the game just looks VERY fast if you know where to click and skip cutscences. If I find the time I will try some serious speedrun attempts of all Myst games!
