DO THE MEATEO
We are currently looking for signups/interest for our new FFIV Paladin% tournament starting in early July! Details and format information at the moment is scarce but will involve 1 race a week (1 - 1.5 hours tops) which you can schedule any time that week between your opponent. The tournament will run for about 2 months and will finish in early - mid September.

If you are interested in signing up, please fill out the following survey! Signups close on 30th June 2015.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/B2LGP6R

There are already 22 signups so this will be a cracker of an event! All other information will be given via Skype and later on challonge.com.

UPDATE: Now we have 57 signups as of 25 June! Rules can be found at  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xzNRB_BH6XgY4ilnRmYHnRY-I_2X_Ou2GH7REG3DA0w/edit - they may be updated but we'll let you know if they do.

As of the 27th June I have sent everybody (59 players) who has signed up a message on either Skype or Twitch confirming their entry, just so we can minimize damage to groups in case there are late dropouts. You don't need to add me back on Skype, just send me a message back confirming that you are good to go. Cheers

So far we have had 25 people sign up! We are well on our way to an awesome tournament!
looking forward to racing with y'all, I'm new to running FF4 (and speed running in general) and this sounds like a fun way to sink my teeth into a new game :>
Awesome, star. Hope you enjoy! If you run into any issues or have any questions, feel free to hit any of us up.

Cool, thanks :> I was actually wondering where I might find some resources to start learning the route, I'd love to dive in as soon as possible.
There are a lot of resources available, some of these have a little bit of age on them, but for starting out these'll do just fine. http://finalfantasyspeedruns.wikidot.com/wiki:ffiv-rr

There is also a rough tutorial video made by Catastrophic4 that can be found here, cheers!

awesome, thanks guys! I appreciate it, I'll be working on this real soon~
37 people have signed up so far. This is shaping up to be one of (if not the largest) RPG race tourneys ever!
Dapper as fuck.
Can't wait for this Smiley
I'm honestly tempted to sign up, even though I'm sure I'll lose horribly and would be better off practicing for SGDQ.  So probably not this time, but if something like this happens again...

As of right now, we have 45 entrants.

I've never run FF4 before - how beginner-friendly is this run?  Is it simliar to the Kefka @ Narshe FF6 run in that it can be done pretty quickly and without too much true speedrunning strategy?
I signed up. Is Catastrophic's video still the best method of learning or is there an updated video or notes I could use to learn this route a bit more in depth or updated?

I made this video specifically for people getting into learning the first hour of the run. I tried to make it a good balance between the most updated strats without adding unnecessarily difficult strats that have more risk than reward for new players. Having said that, you can sub 1 hour MilonZ using the strats in that video (which is the generally accepted "good" time).

There only things in this video that I didn't demonstrate (but did talk about) are:
Seed 92 - This allows you to get 0 encounters to the way to Mist Dragon. This is too complicated to explain via text.
Guard Battle Run Buffering - You can use run buffering in the guard battle in Kaipo to keep the guards from attacking you.
Octomamm Battle - When octomamm is down to 4-5 tentacles, you can have Tellah cast stop on himself to increase overall DPS; this has an innate risk of Rydia getting bopped and not being able to heal her.
Damcyan Clip - You can clip through the airship explosion scene using the same strats as the mist clip.
Alternate Milon and MilonZ strats: You can kill off Tellah and Cecil during Milon to have Palom learn Fire2; then, use Fire2 on MilonZ for OP damage.
Alternate Milon and Milon Z strats: Trashcan/Carrot throwing via Mimic Glitch (faster, but also riskier - time loss if any part is messed up)

If you would like, I can make a video demonstrating all of the "fastest" (but riskier) strats.

Yes, this is basically the equivalent to FF6 K@N. There are a lot of minor optimizations that can be done, but it is very beginner friendly.

52 people have signed up so far!
Let's get sweaty
Asking this will probably complicate things more, but it's been on my mind the past few days. Are there going to be different brackets, ie Novice, Beginner, etc or is it a straight up "who wins, wins" deal?

Straight up 'who wins, wins' Cheesy The groups will be balanced though so there will be people of different levels in each group. There will be tournament rules posted very soon.

We will be looking to release the first draft of the rules today or tomorrow. As Roth mentioned, the grouping will be balanced by an unbiased party who is not participating in the tournament.
Tournament Rules and Information can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xzNRB_BH6XgY4ilnRmYHnRY-I_2X_Ou2GH7REG3DA0w/edit

I've also added it to the second post. Please read over these and ask questions.

It sounded a lot better in my head. Now that the rules have been released but the groups haven't what I meant was would a beginner be matched with someone of, say, your skill level? You don't need to answer since the groups will be released next week, but that's what I was trying to say.

In each round-robin group, everyone will play everyone else within their group. Then, the person with the best record will progress to the double elimination tournament, and the person (or people if multiple are tied) who finish second will compete in the big race on August 8th to try and break into the double elim bracket. This means that you're likely to run into at least one person of a 'higher' skill level during one of your four group matches.
