Hope this is the right section to ask this kind of stuff...
This is a veeery complicated matter. And when I say veeery complicated, I really mean it.
So I was working on a MGS1 speedrun for the PC version with actually a lot of rules and weird variables, and I don't know if such run would ever get accepted by you, SDA guys.
This was my attempt on YouTube, it should look like this when finished:

you're not forced to see it all, since the video quality is a complete failure, the speedrun is amateurish and flawed and so forth and so on. It was my second attempt to a speedrun in my life after all, plus my keyboard sucks.

So these are the weird rules and variables:
- it's the PC version for Windows, it's NOT emulated from the PSX/PS1
- so this is not a TAS, it's a "manual" speedrun done with no specific tools, just Fraps/Dxtory to record
- single-segmented run, no saves
- Easy difficulty (to make it as fast as possible of course). Not Very Easy because you can't unlock Stealth Camo/Bandana in Very Easy mode (you never reach the ending screen so you can't save&restart the game with special items)
- Stealth Camouflage/Bandana unlocked to complete the game faster + Snake with a Tuxedo and Ninja with spiderman-looking outfit (lol), which means that this is classified as a New Game++ or however you call it?
-minimum installation. What's that? When installing the game you can choose the "Minimum" install or the "Full" one. The full one has the cutscenes, codec calls and all this stuff, the minimum one skips most of them making the run a lot quicker.
- there's a problem with the Minimum installation. When you normally play it, you *WILL* get stuck forever when fighting the boss Psycho Mantis, and during the torture, but I discovered a fix to that. I've fixed it by adding 2 files taken from the FULL installation into a folder, required to make the game run properly at those specific parts and avoid getting stuck. Is this fix acceptable, or it would make the speedrun invalid because I've "changed the game behavior"? Without those files you will never be able to finish it otherwise... the PC porting of this game sucks balls unfortunately :\ by the way, the two files make the game play the "key sound" from the video I linked at 17:27 and 25:57, they're called respectively VC114003.VOX and VC144001.VOX
- there's another issue at the ending screen. As you can see from the video, the duration of it is 1hour9minutes with 0 saves, but the ending screen says 1hour16minutes with 8 saves! It appears that the PC version of the game has a fucked up counter... can this be ignored and calculated manually in my possible run?
- if I manage to make this weird bug work (it's kind of random and didn't work last time I tried):

will that be acceptable? You're technically using the (unexisting) savestate loading function, does it make it a two-segmented speedrun lolol?

So, is this legit? I love this game and would love to succeed at a speedrun UNDER ONE HOUR!
Thread title:
Exoray
Lots of variables yeah. Let's dive into them.

Easy difficulty is no problem as it would be a separate category. And yeah, starting with stuff unlocked from previous runs would make this a New Game+.

Does the game just skip playing the cutscenes if it can't find the video files on the hd? I'm guessing it's trying to load them from the CD when on a minimum installation and you're somehow allowed to launch the game without the disc present.
Difficult to say, since this could be considered the same as having deleted the video files or removing the disc from the tray mid-game (which is not allowed on consoles for instance). The PC runs are generally treated differently from the consoles in some regard, but I'm not sure we've had a ruling on this particular case in the past.
I'll check with dex on this one.

Granted that the minimum installation thing would be allowed, I don't see any problem with unbreaking the game by making those audio files available since as you said, there would be no way to continue without them.

If the game timer is behaving inconsistently then the run might be timed using real time instead of in game time. What happens if you make only 1 save, does it say 9? Or 1?
It might be that the game is internally adding the length of all the cutscenes regardless if they are played or not, meaning that you would not gain anything from skipping them in the first place. If this is the case then the in game timer would probably be considered consistent after all.

Since you are actually loading from a save (the default 0 save) it would make it a segmented run under the current rules. As soon as it is a segmented and not a single-segment run you are expected to use as many segments as would be optimal for the entire game which means that the tolerance for mistakes in the run will be way lower since you've had the chance to segment things more.
Either don't use that bug and keep it a single-segment run, or try to appeal for making this run available as a single-segment with resets.

Everything else should be worked out before you pursue this last one though Smiley

Many get skipped, others play but with no voice acting and no "character's mouth movements", but that should be legit.
I used to own the original CD for both the PC version, but I've lost it and now I just play with a no-CD patch. Makes no difference on the actual game. The CD had a setup/installer inside, with that setup you would install the game files into your Hard Disk, the CD is required only to start the game (anti-piracy protection, as simple as that).

As far as I remember, it would say 9.

I find it hard to believe this since it would be much more than just 7 minutes, plus it's not only the timer that is messed up, but the saves counter too.
I've completed and re-completed the game over and fucking over again, thinking that the problem was me, thinking that maybe I saved 8 times before getting a "New Game+ fresh save" run, so I re-played the whole game from the start without saving, and it would always say 8 saves. To get both the Stealth Camo and the Bandana you must complete the game twice (save Meryl/save Otacon), and each time the game probably adds 3 (stupidly random) saves +1 when you actually save the game after the ending screen, 3+1+3+1=8, and maybe it does the same thing with the timer. That's the only remotely rational explanation I can give... as I said the PC porting is a major failure.
Oh and forreal? I've never seen a speedrun that is completed in, let's say 10 minutes, but because of the fucked up ingame timer it will be 13 mins, seems unnatural to me...

Wow, that's fucked up. How can I load a savestate that I've never saved? I was kind of being sarcastic when I said that it would count as a double segment, but after all the bug is still very very weird and looks very dabatable to me. Whatever, I can live without it.

About the "appeal for reset thing"... not worth it. The only advantages I've found with resets are:
A. you can save the game when you meet meryl in the bathroom, exit and load the game and Snake will be positioned in a slightly more convenient position in the map. That should save around 1-2 seconds if you're fast enough when saving and exiting the game... useless.
B. the Metal Gear Ray bug is actually more worth it and makes you skip the first half of the battle, saving around 20-25 seconds, but I say fuck this shit.

The segmented run idea is very tempting, MGS is a pretty fucking long game to do in a single run. BUT, I have an issue (yes, another one) when recording the pause-menu with Fraps. Take a look at 1:02:53 of the video, when I attempted to use the bug by loading the empty savestate and skip the fight. It won't record the menus because apparently they're not recognised inside the game for Fraps, and as you can see from the top left of the screen, it shows the glitched FPS counter. Not sure if Dxtory does the same thing, but how am I supposed to show that I actually save the game in case I wanted to make a segmented run otherwise? Is that necessary?
Exoray
As for the save, it's still a load game action so it doesn't matter if it was you or the devs that made that savestate.

Anyways I spoke some with dex over this. Modifying the game files is not allowed and we both agreed that effectively deleting video files is included under that clause. You will either have to run the game from a full installation, or a minimum installation with the CD present so that the game will be able to find all of the files it is supposed to have access to.

You don't get it... the game *CAN'T* read files from the CD, because the CD has ONLY a setup.
With that setup, you install the game files in your Hard Disk.
The game reads the files that are in your Hard Disk, not from the CD. Even with the CD, it would still skip such cutscenes.
The CD is only necessary to start the game, it's a mere anti-piracy protection as I said.

Oh and come on, I didn't actually modify game files... I added them, I added what the game REQUIRED in order to run properly, otherwise the game would be impossible to complete. It's kind of like a small patch.
Balls jerky
I don't get why you can't just run the version that everyone else uses? Aside from the fact that you can skip cutscenes by not actually installing the game fully, is there anything that makes it faster?
WAZAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAA
The "only" advantage is the fact that many more cutscenes and dialogues are skipped.
And we're talking about a 15+ minute advantage, very significant.
Not a walrus
So you're saying that if you do the minimal install, the game is designed to not play the cutscenes?

It appears so. The minimum install is made to save space in your Hard Disk for the cost the cutscenes, as simple as that.

Uh... in the Full install they are skippable too, but you must do it manually. Also, in the full install voice acting can't be skipped, a good example is 12:25 of the video, notice how when entering the door the fight starts immediately by skipping cutscenes and Gray Fox voice acting too.
This is the "beauty" of the minimum installation.

I do not like this. When you not install the full game, it looks like a rip version. There gives some old games like shadow warrior or resident evil, you install only the game and the rest is the music or video data files. But you must insert the original cd-rom, that he can load the files. Do you use a cracked rip install.exe ?? I know this game is free on abandonware.
Install the full game, it use not many space and I think it give no problems. The most PC games can be install manipulate. I do not understand why you not install the full game.

Please tell me your versions number, the isbn code and the barcode and the region (usa , japan, europe). I check your version and post later when this version what you use is fine or not.

and your disk has only a install exe ? What is the copy protection, to boot your game ?

The protection should be called SafeDisc.
And this is not a pirated version, it works exactly like the original one. For fuck sake, take a look at this picture, it's the official setup:

Do you really think this was NOT made by the developers of the game? That is very unlikely. Try downloading a MGS1 full .iso and see with your own eyes. I have found and tested the ACTUALLY ripped off/pirated version, it's still different from the Minimum install and has even less stuff, super light sized.

I am not a admin, but I think it is ok. But I think different category.
Your idea is impressive !

and I know of safedisc, it sucks Wink and thanks for the information of the pirated version
Exoray
Uh, if the CD didn't contain the neccessary files, how would you be able to install anything from it in the first place ? Tongue

A minimum install is a common concept of PC games and involves leaving movies and sound files on the CD so that they can be read while playing instead of taking up hard drive space. This is also confirmed by the screenshot you provided and they seem to be following the same setup that hundreds of other disc based games used.
They didn't mean for you to be able to play the game without the CD so saying that the purpose of the minimum installation is for you to run the game without all the neccessary files is just not right.
The fact that you can't even finish the entire game unless you copy those audio files you mentioned even further solidifies that the intention was for the CD to be needed.

Unofficial patches aren't allowed anyways, so you wouldn't be allowed to use your no-CD patch for a run here in the first place.

WAZAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAA
lol...

This minimum installation is different, it's made to TOTALLY SKIP the cutscenes, no matter if you're using the goddamn CD. Probably because the PC porting sucks, once again.
The CD is needed only to START the game. The game just doesn't read movies/cutscenes if they're not in the Hard Disk.

Seriously, do the following:
1. Buy this from eBay

or download the .ISO's from here http://kat.ph/metal-gear-solid-pc-eng-demonoid-t439378.html
2. Perform the Minimum installation
3. Play the game until you meet Psycho Mantis.
The result? You will NEVER be able to beat him because the battle gets stuck. This solidifies the fact that KONAMI can suck my speedrunning balls.

One thing: this is the PC version, it's split into two CD's.
When installing them into your PC (you're FORCED to install them), you won't need to change from CD1 to CD2 in the middle of the game like in the PSX version (the CD change should be right before the Blast Furnace), the PC version skips that luckily.
The no-CD patch simply removes the "CD is required!" check, allows 1024x768 definition, fixes some Vista and graphic card-related crashes. But if this isn't allowed, then it's not a problem, I don't need to use such patch.
Exoray
So you're saying that if you do the minimum installation, and keep the CD in while playing, it still skips loading any of the cutscenes at all?
WAZAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAA
Exactly.
Exoray
Well I just installed this using the minimum installation with the CD in the tray and it plays cutscenes and codec calls just perfectly.
I guess you borked your version with that patch of yours.
WAZAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAA
Oh, almost forgot.

Konami fucked up the PC porting so much that it plays the cutscenes and codec calls only at the beginning of the game, but not later. Please go ahead with the story and you'll notice the lack of codec calls etc.

The one at 2:41 of the video is basically one of the few (if not the only) cutscene that plays with the minimum installation.
Exoray
No I loaded a save and checked stuff later as well. All was good.

I guess it makes sense that when you use a no-CD patch on the minimum installation that requires the stuff on the CD, it would not be able to read those things.
WAZAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAA
you've got to be shitting me...
Exoray
No I'm not here to waste your time. And I surely hope you are not trying to waste mine.

Everything was working as expected, all voices present and cutscenes playing the same way as the PS1 version.
WAZAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAA
That's sad news to me if that's true. I'm so demotivated now lol. Are you 100% sure? What happens if you play after the Blast Furnace, which is where it asks you to insert the 2nd CD for the PS1 version (and you can still hear a brief sound confirming it in the PC version)? Will it skip cutscenes since they're on the 2nd CD and in your tray there's the wrong CD (CD1)? I can give you a savestate http://www.mediafire.com/?ca572i06nm9q99z
The first cutscene from that point is supposed to be the one when you fight the elevator guys, but will that play?

Even if it does, that's tantamount to deleting videos from the game, and not allowed. You need the proper CD in the drive.

Also, I've played MGS:I on the PC a lot, and I'm almost certain I've used minimal installation without any cutscene skipping in the past. I think the game (without patching) just checks for CD2 in the drive.
Yeah, even if you were right and the game doesn't play the cutscenes or sounds or whatever, I would agree with the admins on this one. There'd be two "versions" that could be run, the minimum installation and the full installation. If you take the minimum installation and add a couple select files from the full version then you're effectively running a version of the game that doesn't officially exist.
