I am going to buy a DVD recorder here in Sweden, but I'm not sure which one to get. I've been browsing various sites, but everywhere I go I find a quadrillion of different DVD recorders. I don't want one that "lags" (as in when I press a button I don't want it to take 5 seconds before the game responds) and as I've understood from reading through the DVD recorder topic, this "lag" is common. I know nothing about DVD recorders, so I'm asking for advice.

What DVD recorder do you recommend me to get?

as expensive as you can.

with RW

a good label

hmm.. someone said that with scart the lagging doesn´t exist. But I don´t know. If you still get some lagging you could buy a splitter or something BUT its expensive. Guess it should cost you around 50 dollars..

( Kan eventuellt finnas i Sverige. Kanske går med någon form av Scart växlare. Har du någon "Expert" butik kan du gå dit. De är kunniga. De på onoff, siba eller elgiganten kan ofta mindre än en själv =P )

Do not buy this cheap LG recorder from El-giganten. it wasn´t good.

Thanks, that cleared some things up... Smiley

What do you think of this one:

Again, I know nothing about them.
probably you will only know if it lags when you buy it. we've had one unit lagging for some people and not others, so you can't even trust what people say who have bought a particular unit.

I guess I'll take my chances, then. Smiley

Now I've got a DVD recorder...

Next question is, how do I get it to record me playing? All I can get it to record are normal tv-channels (1,2,3,4,5,6,7), not EXT-1 (or AV1).

My fingers are itching to start running, but I can't record anything! Sad

Please help if you know what the problem is.

Again, forgive me for being a newb at DVD recording.

If you pioneer is anything like mine, you can't get there from channel flipping.  There's a separate Input Switch button on the remote.  That'll take you to the AV1/AV2 plugs.

Where exactly it is on that remote, i don't know.  Probably near the power button though.

There's a "INPUT SELECT" button, but when I press it it does the same thing as pressing "Channel +". :-/

Edit: It might help if I show you a HQ picture of the remote: http://av.itek.cz/k_111-Video-DVD/img-shop/626447.jpg

I tried "TV Direct Rec." (Shift + Rec.), but then I get the message "CAN'T REC" on the front display. Sad
strange, i would try input select. maybe your remote is defective (though i've never heard of such a thing before). maybe try google.

The closest I can get  is AV2/L1... :-/

Does it matter if my DVD recorder is region free or not?

Cause it isn't...

Edit: I'm just sitting here, hoping that I didn't pay up $514 for nothing.  :-[
you have the game system on while you are doing this right? if worst comes to worst you can call their tech support and be like "how do i use the inputs?" basically when that happens to me, i just turn the game system on going into the input and start pressing all the buttons on the remote until i can see it on the screen.

For my DVD recorder, I use the channel AV2 Rear. I assume that is because I hooked up my console to the back. Make sure the chords are in the right places, and make sure your DVD recorder is also hooked up to the TV Grin

EDIT: AV2 L1... I'm just guessing, but maybe that is the left set of Visual etc. plugs. Try rearranging your hookup some.

I'm gonna try that, hehe.

Dekudude: My first thought when I saw that AV2/L1 thingy was to connect my Gamecube to the AV2 port on the back of my TV, then try to record. Didn't work, all I got recorded was a black screen.
Cry

Edit: Some facts (don't see how they could be of any use, but I give them to you anyway since you're the experts):

I'm trying to record onto the built in hard-drive.

My DVD recorder is NOT region free.

When I press that Input select button I am able to type in any PR from 1 to 99. Might be able to get AV1 somehow, I dunno.

Try putting your Console into AV2

Also, try recording to a DVD. That might help.

Yauta.. The sweds is in the finals in Soccer world championschips.. And damn I have drunk to many beers and scream to much on the match..

back to topic.

i´m sure you haven´t spend this money on nothing. You gotta link the Gamecube into the Dvd.

I guess you have a channel where you watch the DVD on the TV? AV for example. When you have get this channel so you can watch normal DVD movies on the Tv.. Just changes the channel on the DVD. Make sure your GC is running.
On the DVdDits probably just to switch channels downward. And beyond 1 it can be L1, L2, A1, AV2, 0 or something. Maybe you have to switch on a special Av button on your DVD controller. You should get the next problem there if it lags. If not its just to record it. If you should live not far from SKÖVDe I should come to you and give you a hand =/

YES!!!

I got it to work, thank you Frezy, all I needed to do was connect my GCN to the DVD recorder. Man, I feel like such a dumbass. Angry

I tested playing around with it a bit (in Ocarina of Time) and there was no playing lag that I noticed, since I could pull off some high precision tricks while recording.

I'm soooooo happy! Cheesy

PS. Thanks to everyone who tried to help me, I always appreciate it, y'know. Wink

Well, good luck with your runs! I look forward to watching some.

IIRC you told me to connect the Gamecube to AV2, and I was too dumb to get that you meaned AV2 on the DVD recorder, not on the TV. Wink

My TV doesn't have an AV2. Grin I forgot they could. Mine just has one visual and one audio jack.

Ok, next problem. Grin

I'm trying to use DVD2AVI to convert the .VRO files on my DVD-RW's into .avi's. However, when the file reaches 2000 MB, it creates a new one and the first part becomes a .wav!

How am I supposed to get one big .avi?
Fucking Weeaboo
Don't use DVD2AVI to create AVIs.  Choose to "Save Project" instead, which creates a .d2v file.  Then load that into TMPGEnc and have that create the AVI.  It can incorporate compression schemes too, like DivX.

I did "Save Project" and I got a .d2v file and a .wav file.

I downloaded that program you suggested, but it's very complicated for a guy like me, I get bombarded with like a million advanced options immidiately!

I managed to create a .avi, but there wasn't any sound. :-/

Edit: And I got a MPEG-2 file at 57 MB. The movie was 2 minutes long and that's a bit big. I can't even open such files in VirtualDub. Angry

Edit: Checking Nate's guide.... there seem to be instructions there. Smiley

Thanks Sir. Wink
I'd wait for SDA to switch to mp4 before doing any major encoding. Still it's good to learn how to make the avi files too.
otherwise you can just upload a .vob file and i can do it for you. follow the submission guidelines for submitting a run and radix will give you an upload location.
