I thought the AI was pretty predictable in Advance Wars. I mean, you basically have to exploit it in AW1 in order to get all S-ranks. You wouldn't be able to exploit it if it wasn't at least somewhat predictable.

Play terra maw and then tell me that again. :/

The AI of the enemy once you engage it in battle is alright, but before you're near, it's evil.

DMC3,ZOE2 and Xenosaga 2. Am I crazy?
I guess this is a little off-topic but do you think the AI in Half Life 2 wasn`t that great? I mean they just stand and shoot or rush at you. Sometimes they throw a grenade and then rush at you.
${$uid.$user}{' usertext'}
Given how hyped it was, yes.
They did a really good job in HL1, for that time, but games have moved on, and my personal feeling is that if there was some good AI in HL2, the level design made sure it would never show up. In the few cases where battles aren't heavily scripted the AI does basically what everybody would do, approach while being covered, if more than one try to get into back, throw the occasional granade. Nothing new there.

But if you take it that way, what should a FPS AI be capable of to be good? You'll never fight Quake/Doom/UT deathmatches with them.
TIOLET!
Right now there isn't very much variation among the AIs for FPS games. They advance, if you shoot they take cover, throw a grenade or two if they got any, advance some more, retreat and regroup when X% of them is taken out, repeat. Even the AI in the newest hype FEAR is like that, with the exception of the tougher enemies who think they are god and don't even bother to dodge rockets.

I think Halo 1 and 2 had some really good AI in them.
All the Metal Gear Solids ahd really good AI. Even the old ones had better AI than other games of that time.

AI in hl2 is like the best at the moment, not great but none is better..

wich game do this too: you go hide in a building when there is a couple of combine agaisnt you. So they start shotting you from windows, nade you from window, go in the building by 2 entrance at same time O_o
or if you hide behind a corner, they mostly wait, and make a circle around you Smiley

and wrost AI is starcraft Tongue

when you say like in a 1v1 against a cpu, go attack there main base with a probe then run away and hide, theire probe will fallow you, i mean all of them: Ez win Shocked
Most hated AI? How about Kintaro from Mortal Kombat 2 on the SNES? That sucker was hard. Don't know anyone that actually managed to beat him. Megadrive version seemed a lot easier.

I don't think this has been mentioned, but how about the old fps games (e.g. Marathon). Where the AI would immediately turn upon their allies the moment they got accidentally attacked by them. I remember on harder modes it was necessary to exploit this to survive.
There were many other games that did this, but I don't feel like remembering them. It just seems unrealistic that in the heat of battle you would kill your alien buddy just because he missed the human and hit you.
Change of Seasons
I would say the AI that annoys me the most ever (if it is considered AI) is the Scarabs in Starcraft. They always get stuck, go the wrong way, etc... The reavers themselves arent exeptionally smart either. There definetly should have been a way to put units in no attack mode (of course there is no hope of this problem being addressed now) if you have 5 reavers and one ling comes they will all shoot, or one will shoot and blow up the ling and the others will shoot after anyways, making the scarabs go nuts...
XXY
I just thought of more AI that pisses me off. "Super Hard" computers in Mario Party 2. Take one of them on in Mecha-Marathon, or anything for that matter. Forget about it.

Heaven or Hell! Let's Rock!
All the bosses from SNK fighting games especially Rugal :wallbash:
With MKDD, I hate it how the computer leaves objects RIGHT in your path. There was noone within 60 seconds of you, and somehow they knew exactly where you were the last time around.

And then there's Ashley's AI from RE4. I could write volumes about that. She will constantly 'duck and cover her head' if she gets to close to a ganado, when if she had've kept moving she would have been fine.

It's stangely like driving a truck where you have to make these big movements with the cab to get the back end of the trailer just to move around simple objects.

Also it happens if you're running through ganados that have been stunned, or if one starts its getting up sequence when she's near.

I-NO??
very easy to beat!
Sez you. She always manages to block my one-hit kill! Damn her!
Heaven or Hell! Let's Rock!
you are talking about DESTROYED

I never use this
What annoyed me to no end was the catch up ability of the cops in NFS: Hot Pursuit 2. In the first race, all cops went after me, and even if I PIT-ed them, they were back on my tail, harassing me, in no time. I tried that race 2, maybe 3 times, then got so annoyed I uninstalled the game and deleted the images. Man, I'm so glad I never actually bought that game.

Or if you accidently call for help from the other police car, and that guy ends up getting in the way so you can't even get to the criminal, and he ends up making him go a lot faster too.
hehe I agree with the Mario Kart 64 AI

Another AI nightmare is UT2003 single player... the last boss on godlike
All other maps were pretty easy... rarely needed more than 2 tries but that boss is not humanly possible to defeat 'the normal way'
He has no reaction time and pretty much an aimbot.
To make things worse the map is horribly tight

Well I did win eventually... after many many tries.
I camped an elevator where you can shoot him before he gets in line of sight (he'd kill you immediately)
I think he even starts moving silently after you kill him a few times. To know when he moves up the elevator I had to try to hear when he picks up the weapon in front of it
Beep bitch. Beep.
Jedi Academy Multiplayer.
Their bots were retarded.
They'd jump into the lava..run off levels..run into walls and keep attacking the walls..get stuck in boxes..crouch under ships and get stuck..the list goes on.

Never give up!
I have a new candidate for most hated AI.

Jax's AI in Konquest mode of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. It is probably the cheapest of all the final matches in Konquest mode. Blocks and counters just about everything, and it only gets worse when he has a sliver of health left.

Also, fighting him is the only time I have EVER broken a controller in disgust. (In fact, it was just broken moments ago because of this. I was so angry I threw the thing hard enough for it to bounce off the floor and now the L and R buttons don't function - the rest of the thing does for some reason.)
That...poor... controller... Cry
Never give up!
I'm not going to worry over it at this time. It'd been around for 3 years by now. Plus, I still have a first-party controller in case a game requires it and I just got a cheap 3rd-party controller to replace the broken one.

But yeah, a controller bouncing off of a hard floor is not a good thing. And I plan on staying away from MK Deadly Alliance for at least a week so I don't break another controller on it too soon.

As for other hated AI patterns.... the only other one I can think of offhand is MAYBE the AI of Pegasolta Eclair from Mega Man Zero 4. But that's more of an intelligent AI rather than a cheap one - the difference being you have at least a remote chance of countering an intelligent AI (in this case, attacking while he's in the middle of his own attack), rather than the zero chance you have with a cheap AI.
Dead or Alive3. The first opponents are way too easy.. but when you've played to the boss... The hell begins.
