Never give up!
Right now, I've tossed around an idea that would be done once I get my on-deck runs (like several other people, those are listed in my signature) finished.

I'm considering making a 'most daring moments' video to chronicle some of the most death-defying moments done in video games, specifically moments that occur in speedruns.  I've posted it here because I don't know whether I want to try to convince Radix and Nate yet to use such a video as part of a promotional tool for SDA.  I'll show it to you people regardless of that decision, but.... I digress.

What I'd need to know is some of the current runs that have suitable death-defying moments, and what (or where; I'm willing to download and look for myself) those moments are.  (Example: The trick at about 44:34 in Snapdragon's PoP: Warrior Within run definitely qualifies.)
Thread title:
TIOLET!
Too bad i deleted my previous try of Doom 3 on nightmare. I was running head-on to a marine blasting me with a machinegun, and when I blasted him I had 2HP left, right after I had to take out 4 additional marines with 2HP. Too bad it's only a story now  Cry

The 70th star on the 70 star Super Mario 64 is pretty far out there.  Anything by Mike Uyama  tends to have tons of bad ass moments too.... The Megaman 2 run is full of them as well..

Get some stuff from the Metroid Prime runs. Like really tough/awesome tricks, or where the player is down to 1 hp and dodging pirate attacks (I think there's three runs like that). It won't be hard to get material from those videos.

Oh yeah, and definately the Half-Life segmented run.  He cheats death SO many times.
dinosaur from the past
Are you specifically focusing on death defying moments, or would you consider just plain awesome moments?

About the whole endevour:
Sounds nice, if you get it done that is... making these videos takes a lot of time or so I was told. Make sure to choose a nice soundtrack. Smiley

Close run moments (order in which I came up with them):
- The last 10 minutes of all three Diablo runs. Although the sorc run fails a bit at defying.
- "teh" Half-Life run... as a whole.
- Shortly before the end of the Half-Life Opposing Force run it's, there a nice 2HP left scene.
- The jump sequence over Ravenholm in marsh's Half-Life 2 run.
- Same in the proof-of-concept Metroid Prime hard 22% down in Magmoor Caverns (not listed here anymore, but should be available at archive.org).
- Same with the last 2 boss fights in kip's proof of Concept Echoes hard low%.
- Metroid Fusion Single segment, Ridley fight
- In the recent Mario 2 All Levels, there's a Birdo fight in the end where the char is only saved by the incincibility from picking up a mushroom block.
- Zelda: there's at least one really close moment in most of the Zelda runs here, but I'm too lazy to look them up right now.
- The 70th star of LeCoureur's Mario64 shouldn't be missing here either Wink
- There are close ones in the Serious Sam runs too... wait the whole game is like that Wink
- the Megaman runs look good too, but not many low hp scenes.
- AndyPros Perfect Cherry Blossom highscore over at sdkess site. Classic.

Sorry if I name stuff that's been named before... I started this when there was only Kibumbi's answer.

EDIT: If you want awesome moments, start the recent Zero Mission run starting minute 66. That shinespark sequence is a true jaw dropper.

TSA's SUPREME ownage of Bongo Bongo.  He had freaking 1/2 a heart!

Plus LeCourer103's ownage of rainbow road/tick-tock-clock so late in a run.
A-T
In the Unreal speedrun, Allantois has 1 health left after he does a rocket jump up to a window. I thought it was awesome considering how he was confident with that jump, and there was enemies crawling all over the place.
like....gah... ._.
Yes...something from Metroid Prime is a must.

The 70th star from Lecourier's Mario 64 run.

I know it's not his newest run...but TSA's Phantom Ganon fight in his 5:25 OoT run is awesome.
Never give up!
Yoshi348: I'm hoping to find enough moments that are specifically death-defying, the stuff that truly makes you wonder "how the heck did the player manage to survive here?"  The chances of a moment making it are better if they leave me, someone who was quite used to seeing insane tricks before I got here thanks to the TAS people, sitting there staring and wondering "OH MY GOD!"

I'll mention a list of moments in consideration when I've checked all of the mentioned ones out.
PwNzRd!
Don't forget the Doom 3 run had A LOT of close calls, and I am sure future ones, especially on Nightmare will have them.

Talk to the Hand
Also not the newest run, but the part where the Irknuckle knocks TSA down to half a heart in the 5:04. I still have this if you need it, or you could always find it on archive.org.

And let's not forget the boss of the Island Palace knocking me down to what literally appears to be NO life in my Zelda II New Game + run....
I was thinking of the Boost Ball guardian battle in Metroid Prime 2.  I think it was that any % speed run that was insane.

Okay, I'm going to start a list of what I've validated and confirmed as 'daring moments'.  Keep in mind, I STILL HAVE NOT VALIDATED EVERYTHING YOU PEOPLE HAVE SUGGESTED.

If a moment you suggested isn't on this list, there are good odds I haven't checked it out yet.  Even I have limits on how long I can do this in a given day.

Also, I'm hoping to try to keep any given moment to taking up less than 10 seconds at a time, which might rarely factor in, but I'm doing that for presenting as many as possible in a short video.  (I think the presentational video Nate made for EGM over a year ago only had one or two clips that took up more than 10 seconds on their own - almost all of them were shorter than that to my knowledge.)

Here are the ones I've reviewed and approved for consideration (with my nickname for it):
-"Through the Grinder" - This is the moment I mentioned in Snapdragon's Warrior Within run.
-"The Best Damn Wallkick Period" - Most of the stuff pulled in the Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride levels of LeCoureur's Mario 64 run could qualify, but I'm going to try and pick out one wallkick I found especially daring (it'll probably be from the Rainbow Ride section).
-"Going the Distance" - Same as the last moment, except it's going to be the long jump I found most daring.
-"Keeping The Beatdown" - TSA's ownage of Bongo Bongo, probably starting from just after he disables the hands.
-"Your Moment of Xen" - The first use of the gauss cannon in Xen in the 'latest Steam version' Half-Life run.
-"Chainsaw Massacre" - In the Doom 3 run, there is a portion where the speedrunner, with single-digit health, decides to use the CHAINSAW.  I doubt that was completely intentional - that sounded like adrenaline doing the talking.
-"We Don't Need No Stinking Jump Boots" - I'll try to find the best rocket jump in the Unreal run and use that for this specific moment.
-"A Tight Squeeze" - In the Yoshi's Story run, on the last level, there's a point where the player barely misses being squished.  It occurs sometime during the time where he has three fruits remaining.
-"Mad as a Hatter" - The battle against the Mad Hatter in the American McGee's Alice run.  Specifically, one part where the Jackbomb is used, and Alice accidentally catches fire.  The speedrunner simply continues fighting as if nothing had happened.
-"Faster than a Speeding Rocket" - While this cites a certain trick in the Mega Man 2 run, this moment will probably have a different part of that game, where the player had a brush or two with death.
-"Nerves of Steel" - The Metal Slug X Mission 3 run.  Specifically the part where the airplane comes in.
-"Barely Needed Anything" - Some scene from a Metroid Prime 22% run.  Maybe even a tough part of the Metal Ridley boss fight, where the speedrunner has only 5 missiles and doesn't have any Energy Tanks or, as far as I can tell, the Charge Beam.
-"Untouchable" - The last segment of the Diablo run, or more precisely, anywhere in that run where a massive amount of projectile dodging happens.
-"Poison Run" - Secret of Mana run, last segment.
-"Eggshell Armor" - If/When (probably when) that Super Ghouls and Ghosts run gets sent, verified, and posted, I should be able to pluck out at least one moment that's a candidate for this.

I still have a lot I need to review, so be patient.  This post will get updated as I find new moments.  By the end I hope to come up with a list of between 30 and 50 daring moments.
Precursor
My Ufouria run, the lava pool part at 00:28:06 to 00:28:32  - especially around 00:28:15. Like in Emptyeyes Adventure of Link run, I'm down to what looks like no health - my life count shows 00. Thank god that 00 in Ufouria actually means you still have one life point left.

00:22:29 in my Yoshi's Story run is one of those close moments. I was thinking "WHOA!" as I was doing it.

For moments in runs not my own, they have either already been mentioned or I can't remember them right now. I don't have too many runs stored at my computer.
Resident Evil 4 w/ the rocket launcher part (where he breaks what's her name free) was pretty insane.

If you update this video later, I have a ton of close calls in Deus Ex (when I finally finish it :P)
Never give up!
Okay, I've made a few updates to my list.  In case you didn't observe earlier, the list is in the 15th reply to this topic (top of page 2, I believe).

Also, I've been trying to find a really good piece of music to go with this video.  Any suggestions?

"nerves of steel" from metal Slug X was not so much 'daring' as it was "incredibly stupid because I wasn't paying attention" but thanks anyways!

Wait a minute, you're telling me that the bit where you destroy the plane when that one shot had maybe five to ten pixels to go to hit you wasn't daring?

In that case, I should ask - Does it still count as daring if it wasn't intended by the player?

It probably won't make so much sense to people who haven't played Tomb Raider 2 (or even tried the jump), but in my (hopefully) forthcoming run of the game on Catacombs of the Talion I do one of the most insane curve jumps I've ever done, to the point where it borders on luck based (although I was able to work out a sort of technique), and there's a fair segment of play beforehand if I screw it up. That's probably been my most worried moment of speedrunning TR so far.

Of course, I have to finish the run first before there's any chance of it making this list.
No the Quail is not riding the Q
TSA in his 4:57 OoT run, going to the bathroom meanwhile trying to geuss the Requiem of the Spirit.  Tongue
A Crab
I've got to second the boost ball guardian fight on the any% Metroid Prime 2: Echoes run.  Health is dropping fast the whole time in a hard fight.  It might be more than 10 seconds but it's pretty crazy.

Also in the Metroid Prime 1:28 100% run, part 18 near the end, getting the relic in the phazon zone: going in with 1300 energy and coming out with 27.  When Radix first did that trick I was just amazed.
Visit my profile to see my runs!
In Marble Madness, my brother somehow gets by those insidious hammers guarding the fourth level's exit, unscathed. Those are instant deaths.  That or the gauntlet of those silly purple birds in the next level.
---Yeah, okay, maybe anything from Marble freaking Madness would be kind of ridiculous on this video, but I had to give it a shot.

For a more legitimate suggestion, I would really like to see a clip from Sonic Advance, one where he continues fighting the last boss of the last 'normal Sonic' level even after all of his rings are depleted, be included in this montage; the boss apparently has the power of hit-detection-bamboozlement and could've killed him at about any second as no rings is equivalent to no life bar.

Music?  Umm... ever heard "banana man"?
