You could probably chalk up the weird boss quotes to being Engrish. I think a lot of the bosses are sort of Japanese inside jokes too. Though I have no idea how they came up with a fried shrimp, onion ring, and shish kebab(?) boss. That has to be in the all time top 10 most bizarre video game monsters, if not number one.
This seems like it could be one of those runs where the beginning is almost harder than the end. It's definitely easier to avoid enemies in the later levels, plus the Bert pills seem to become more plentiful.
Another thing, either I'm missing something or Mark is much better for the final boss.

I think you're missing something because the final boss is way easier if you just fly up and shoot his eye with Bert. Batting the eyeballs with Mark is not only random, you have to hit the boss more times than you do with Bert.
I'm using Mark vs. the final boss, just jumping up and batting the nose. Bert takes a lot of damage from the eyeballs flying around, and he's hard to keep flying at the same level.
Edit: 17:28 and still messy. Edit2: 17:19, too many mistakes. Edit3: 17:08 which would have been 16:xx if I hadn't missed one jump in Round 4 THREE TIMES IN A ROW!
I've been trying a lot, but I can't get under 16:52. Reason is I suck at Round 8 and I shouldn't have even started doing whole-game runs without drilling that level for a few hours. So I'll do that, then get back to attempts.
Most of the run is memorization of non-random enemy behavior, but there are some spots I need good luck. A couple times I depend on the "?"s that appear after a boss fight to give me exactly what I need, but I usually don't and it leads to lots of resets of otherwise well-run attempts. Some skill- and memory-based stuff I need to work on: 1. Dealing with some umbrella bats in Round 3 2. Dealing with a few water drops in Round 6 3. Tighten up the jumps / flying patterns in Round 7 4. Everything about Round 8 except the boss fights
I'm pretty good at Round 8 now! It's been tough to figure out because I had to manipulate the explosions of most of the cloud dynamite without shooting or stopping. But I also learned to be Bert in the final battle. The time difference between Mark and Bert in the final battle is not worth the time it takes to change back into Mark in Level 8. So that will be the longest sustained Bert in the speedrun, it goes from just before the first boss of Level 7 all the way to the end of the game. I should get back to full-game attempts soon.
Good job. Levels three and four seem like they might be the hardest in the entire run. Is there anything in particular in four that's giving you trouble? For what it's worth, my strategy on the bosses in that level is button mashing with Bert. I believe there's a spot you can stand on where the cat boss can't hit you but I'm not sure.
I take back my previous statement on Bert always being better. I prefer him when playing the game at a leisurely pace, but Mark definitely has his moments when going fast.
Mark - Plant Bert - Dead spider, Pumpkin Mark - Medusa, Fried foods, Well Bert - Minotaur, Mummy, Spider Mark - Slowpoke, Cat Bert - Punk Mark - Dancing zombies, Javelin man Bert - Camouflaged Face, Royce, Death, Dragon, Hand Monster, Pharaoh, Final Boss
Q. Why aren't you xxxx for this boss fight? He is faster.
A. Either: 1. It takes too long to turn into and out of Bert to make the boss fight worth the change, or 2. I need to be the other one in order to make the platforming part go faster.
Excellent work on the run...another childhood game deftly destroyed, though at least this one was one that I could beat through decently enough. First time in the haunted house about drove me insane though... :-[

My first time sitting down seriously with this game last year, I got lost in the maze level. I was stuck there a full hour before I quit. I didn't even play the game again until I had the solution from the internet and had a map drawn out by hand.
Sweet. Maybe this will lead to some people trying out this underrated game.
For me it never seems hard to find the floating head boss in the maze level, but for some reason the exit always eludes me. Everything just looks exactly the same.
So I have been speed running this game for a month or two. I found a few new strats and was actually able to improve the existing WR by 16 seconds. I am going to submit my 16:17 in a bit, and was told I should post in the forums about it first, so here I am!
There are a few small strats that are implemented, but the one that saves considerable time is in level 6 (the doors level). After defeating the one boss, if you are able to get a Bert pill from the question mark (obviously doesn't always happen), if you take a different pattern that is slightly faster (after boss going Right, Right, Right Middle, Left) you can get out of level 6 without transforming into Mark. If you do it fast enough, you can get to another Bert pill in level 7 without transforming into Mark. That saves both transformations, which probably saves you about 10 seconds.
