Took the liberty of doing a quick run of CD1 (Plunder Island) myself... Videos will be hotlinked below for download with download manager or just streaming or whatever. Hotlinks, in either case.
I have some good news and some bad news...
The good news (sort of), is that I've been able to complete the first CD at 18:37 minutes, roughly estimated. I start counting at the point where I first get control of Guybrush; if I should start counting the second I hit mega monkey, add 9 seconds (18:46).
The bad news go like this: My sound card is really not on my side, and I haven't in one single way found means to record the audio. Fraps won't record the audio (it records, but it's a flat wave pattern as if muted), ZD whatever lags the PC down to a complete lagfest which I simply will not have, and stand-alone audio recorders won't record anything at all, just like Fraps. In either case, the video is there. Cursor included.
If anyone can provide me with a means to record with audio, if that's absolutely necessary that is, I can do another run. If not, then this is what you'll get.
This Plunder Island run can most definitely be done faster, I did miss twice with the cannon in the beginning, and also I got lost once or twice. I skimmered through the rules as well and found that the dialogue skipping was approved, so I hit esc as often as I could to skip them, item and scene animations and so forth; these are the radical "hops" you will see.
That's it for me, and all in all I want to say that this run can probably be done well within 15 minutes, maybe 16. And I suck at gaming at 4am.
In my test runs I've done chapter 1 in about 1:00-1:15 minutes and chapter 2 could be done in about 10-11 minutes. It's just a matter of time when I will do the real speedrun, but don't give up yet.... I want challenge too !
Now, I try my best to point out the biggest or obvious mistakes: Overall: - Faster cutscenes and dialogue skipping with "Esc" and "." buttons - Better knowledge of what to do next - Using "E" (examine), "T" (talk) and "U" (use) buttons instead of the right-click menu
Chapter 1: - Pick up ramrod after using cannon - You could have skipped the last dialog with Wally by choosing "Just go ahead and shoot." before - Faster and better control of the cannon
Chapter 2: - Go to theater before 1st visit of barber shop - Examine plaque before using scissors with undergrowth - Eat tasty, buttery biscuit first - Give gold tooth to salty pirate before talking to Haggis the 2nd time - Use biscuit cutter with another rubber tree first
Overall, your route planing was very good, except going to the barber shop 2x too much. Just by improving the first 3 things I pointed out, you could gain a lot more time and the other things just add up second by second!
Sorry, I can't help you with your sound problem... I am using a DVD-recorder to capture my gameplay with sound.
Chokehold, I'm pretty sure SDA won't accept the run if there is no sound. I don't know how to help you with the problem (since I've never used Fraps), but you could try asking in the tech support forum.
To the sound problem: Try to use Techsmith Camtasia Studio, maybe this will solve your problem. I use this programm for all my recordings. Which kind of soundcard do you have? AC97? Onboard?
Wow, thank you everyone for your supportive replies! And if that came out sarcastically, I just want to point out that I really mean it. Really, I do.
As for comments...
To Burning_Death Honestly, I never really... planned any routes, I just started recording and went on. I quote myself:

Alas, I never said this is the fastest ever possible, it's just a bit of progress on the way. I'd consider it a training video of how not to do.
To El_Nino My soundcard is a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio. Having a friend look it up however, this seems to just be a renamed Audigy SE2 (which I find is very lame of Creative to do).
To Essentia I've tried other applications and all have suffered the same issues. I even tried a stand-alone audio recorder, but with no positive results. Like I said, tried other applications, but not Camtasia to be honest. I read somewhere (if memory serves) that it supports only up to 15fps, which I tried with Fraps, and it looked... awful. Just plain awful. In either case, when opportunity shows, I'll try Camtasia like you suggested.
Sorry about the late response, been out IRL (believe it or not, but it does exist).
So.. When I get the time for it, I'll try Camtasia. It seems to be a good application actually, just haven't really, you know.. Gotten my ass outta the wagon and given it a go.
In either case, I will record an official speedrun for you guys. Most definitely. I may not be around often, and I may not post in every thread, but this is a certain, I will do this. Even if it's only to be a starting point for improved runs.
I love Monkey Island 3. Have played it alot last week. Improved my personal best today too. Had 52.50, whole game without rest. Beat my personal best with 10min.
When will anyone make a speed run so all amatuers (like me) can have something to hunt?

It would be really great if you can record your speedrun. That's a really good time(52.50). I would really like to see that run. Looking forward for such a video. Good luck. If you need details for recording tools, you can ask me. l-nino@gmx.at
El_Nino: Right now I don't have the time to play very much. Pretty busy irl. And I still work a bit on some better routes to save some more time. But I'll send you a mail if I can figure out myself
I have finally solved the problem with the sound (simply used my normal computer instead of my laptop). I will do some test runs first, then I will record a complete run.
Just some stuff I wanna ask about before I record: Is it allowed to use esc to skip some chats? Is it allowed to use both text and sound? Or just sound? Do I have to make a record when I'm playing with a normal camera so you don't think I'm cheating or cut some stuff with movie maker? When do I start and stop the time? Shall the movie be in single segment or segment for each part?
Please, hurry with answers. I wanna play
Edit: I made a new complete run. Took the time from when I could move until "The End" was showed. I tested a new tactic on the sea battle and got a pretty nice improvement. My new best time was 46.37
Great that the solution of this problem was quite easy.

You can skip cutscenes and dialogues. But using the cheat to win the see fights is not allowed. In this case a big window appears, which asks you if you want to cheat. So this is not allowed to use it. All other things are allowed to skip.

The best combination is to use sound and text.

NO. You do not have to record yourself sitting in front of the computer. The recorded video of the game is enough.
Quote:

Start the Record at the Start Screen where you can choose Easy or Difficult Way. So everyone can see that you choose the mega monkey difficult way. You can stop recording when the game is over and the words THE END is written on the screen.
Quote:

This is your choice. Single or Multisegment. Single Segment is more difficult. But you can choose. If you use Multisegment, you have to know that you are allowed to save 1 time in each chapter. Better you save at the end of a chapter. So you cannot cheat with the mouse pointer at the beginning of a chapter. But if you are doing a single segment, you do not have to know this thing about savegames.
Congratz to your new time. Did you used the fight aborting on the see fights. Have you read the whole thread about monkey 3, as I know there were several tricks and dos and don't written.
Have you managed the problem with the "Insert Disc 2 Problem"?
Cool. Then it's just like I played earlier. In the sea battle I did not buy cannons every time I had won an insult fight like I did in my 52.50 run. Just defeated 4 guys, bought better cannons and defeated Captain Rottingham.
Anyway you will see when I have done a good recording
Yep. I have sit at the forum many hours to get a couple of messages
I made a movie now. Think this run was around 43.30 lol. I used images files and daemon tools to change cd fast so it's shown in the movie if I'm not cutting that away. And when the new cd was in the autostart came up and made a grey screen for 0,5s which I can't cut cause then it destroys the movie
It wasn't perfect, niether the run or the recording. I hoped it, but I probably have to make it again. Don't think this movie will be accepted. Anyway I make more improvements, especially in the sea battle
3.6) The Curse of Monkey Island notes: ---- --------------------------------- For this game, you will need the comi.la0, comi.la1 and comi.la2 files. The comi.la0 file can be found on either CD, but since they are identical it doesn't matter which one of them you use.
In addition, you will need to create a "resource" subdirectory containing all of the files from -both- "resource" subdirectories on the two CDs. Some of the files appear on both CDs, but again they're identical.
