ive already mentioned a mi3 run but now im serious about it and started it
theres just one problem : insult fighting
ive tried a few tactics but none of it seemed to work out and i loose to much time when i count on luck
i dont think many people have tried to run mi3 but if theres is anyone with a good idea - discuss it with me
especially insult fighting
if there is any reply i will also tell about the tactics ive tried
Thread title:
give me your eyes!!!
Well, say some of your tactics, and I can try to help with those.

I wouldn't have thought you could depend on luck, since if you know it you know it and if you don't you don't.

I'd just learn every single one perfectly (including the final guy's insults (I've forgotten his name...)) so you can respond as quickly as possible and know when you don't have the right one. Do the entire thing about 5 times and keep the fastest one.
his name is  René Röchelieu (german version)
ive tried to collect questions first but then it gets harder to get the answers because you will beat nearly all of them
another thing is the seafight against  René Röchelieu
it take too much time to beat him with the standard canon so you have to upgrade
it took me 25 min to finish plunder island
currently im working on blood island an insult fighting

I've really no idea how the upgrade system works, since I've never played with speed in mind. I suppose that, the fewer times you need to upgrade the better, unless the advantage of having the upgrade outweighs the time it takes to beat someone with an inferior cannon.

Luck could be used just for the final fight then if you're planning on doing it segmented, what if you get up to the fight then save, and keep trying until all his questions work in your favour and match the responses you've obtained?

If it's single segment, you'll just have to keep fighting over and over until you have enough to beat him with a high probability.

If I'm mistaken anywhere please say, I haven't played in quite a while.
segmented would be easier but not what i want to do
i put more effort into plunder island and blood island till now which means im havent tried everything in relation to insult fighting but ive tried what you mentioned : not to upgrade after every single win but from time to time
problem : as i already told i collected questons first . now if any opponent knows the right answer he will beat you because you dont have answers
so you have to do this over and over again and of course he will take your treasure
whatever tactic one chooses you will loose time because it has his advantages and disadvantages
whatever i will find something that works after ive finished the rest in a good time
my aim is sub 2 hours
give me your eyes!!!
Ah yeah, I forgot about the treasure, it's more complicated than I thought. With practice you'll be able to balance all the factors hopefully, good luck with it!
You can beat all the 'normal' enemys with the standart cannon (and only one shoot is needed).
Only for Rochelieu you need a better one.

As I remember this is true.

A single segment run would be really great.

I will host it on http://www.adventure-speedruns.com if you want to.

Is it still one shot against the last guy (Capt. Rottingham?) if you ask the crew to help out?
i know that all the normal ones only need a single shot in easy fight and that will the one i will choose
you need the correct balance between the time you need to upgrade, the time you need to beat Röchelieu,
and how many pirates you attack to get enough insults and the fitting answer
i was once really lucky when i had to beat only three pirates in four tries to have enough insults but as said before luck is nothing one can count on in a single segment
thanks for the offer nino but im afraid ill be the german version if you dont mind
some conversations can be intirely skipped by hitting "Esc" some only in fragments with "."
that saves a lot of time

(i currently run via scummvm 0.10 because my cursor laggs when run on my xp
problem is scummvm also laggs sometimes when you to quick enter a area for the first time
i need to fix this)

right now i try to do it from the beginning to the end of plunder island in under 15 min

ps.: is it possible to do a single segment at all?
one has to switch cds after plunder island
btw endgame:
no its not ^^
give me your eyes!!!
You can still have a single-segment with a CD change, as long as you don't leave the game.
what about scummvm?
faq says only emulators are not allowed
give me your eyes!!!
Hmm, I think it's also in the emulator catagory, and doesn't it let you slow the game down? That would definitely disallow it. I think nino had this debate before, so ask him or ask mikwuyma for a more determative answer.

Nino will accept your run even if it's in German though!

If I remember correctly there was a left-in debug command, that allowed you to skip the sea-fight part of the game completely.

Edit:
Press Shift + V then Y
OR
Ctrl+V

Wouldn't that be like cheating?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a run of any Monkey Island game. They're awesome, good luck Smiley

Probably would be cheating. It was certainly shift-v for the fights and the demolition derby in Full Throttle.
shift + v + y lets you skip the shipfights but not insult fighting against the pirates
if you press ctrl + v the only thing that happens is that this message appears :
"Scripts compiled Wed Oct 15 1997 18:21:17"
that message is also in every savegame in your \LucasArts\Curse folder if you open it with the editor
anyway im not going to do that because it would be a kind of cheating indeed

but back to scummvm : does anybody know whether it is allowed or not
if its not allowed i need to fix the cursor lags or use an older pc with windows 95 (which i dont have atm)

English would be definately better. I am a german speaking person too, but it would be better to have a one language website to make it international.

ScummVM is no problem on adventure-speedruns.com, you can use it. Maybe can you get Curse of Monkey Island in English somewhere?

I have to think about the shortcuts. I will tell you more after I thought out a solution.
I have no solution, but i admire the problem.
ScummVM counts as an emulator. Also, SDA will most likely never accept a "point-and-click" adventure run, anyways, since the biggest part of it is to do certain things in a certain order. But well, a MI3 run could be interesting, especially the fighting.

Hi,
I am also doing a speedrun, segmented (because of chapter 3). I've planned everything and done some test runs. For example: I can do chapter 2 in about 10 minutes. I just don't have enough free time at the moment to do it...

Chapter 3 is really annoying when it comes to speedrunning because of the complete randomness! There is absolutly no way to manipulate the sword fights to your advantage.
About the key combination discussed before, this message pops up if you use it: "Are you sure you want to CHEAT to win ship combat? Yes/No" Should be obvious now that this shouldn't be used in a legitimate speedrun Wink .

Chapter 3 facts:
You just need to win against 4 different pirates if I remember correctly, because you don't need the best cannon upgrade to beat Rottingham in the sea fights.

There are 6 different pirates you can fight against. Every pirate has a randomly generated set of insults and their correct answers! So, what you need to do now is to pick the remaining insults he don't knows. The bad thing is, that you don't know what insults & answers the 'computer' has randomly generated for the pirate you are currently fighting, though. I have worked out a list for every pirate to get an idea of how much luck you need to win the sword fight against each of them:
Really Not Fearsome Pirates - He knows 4 out of 16 insults and their answers
Semi Fearsome Pirates - 4 out of 16
Middly Fearsome Pirates - 8 out of 16
Pretty Fearsome Pirates - 8 out of 16
Fearsome Pirates - 10 out of 16
Really Fearsome Pirates - 12 out of 16
Captain Rottingham - 10 out of 16 (but in 5 rounds!)

It's hard to explain, but I hope you understand what I wanted to explain. Fact for a good speedrun is that you just need to win against 4 pirates and try to get as many insults and their answers as possible, I would say 8 is enough to try your luck against rottingham Wink . My best attempt for chapter 3 was something about 8 minutes.
chapter 3 is not the problem when you do your run segmented
its starts to get interesting when it comes to a single segment

to burning_death: have you already runned chapter 2 in 10 mintues or is that just an estimate?
i wasent able to it in under 17 minutes so far
but i have to say that i always made some dump mistakes such as coosing the wrong sentence or leaving the barberchair when i tried to pull the hand gear^^
i got still work to do and an improvement is for sure
and if the rest is done fast and planned only a bad beat in chapter 3 can ruin your run

ps: i will avoid scummvm in the run but i will continue practicing with it due to my temporary cursor lags
if one doesnt changes the settings its the same game
Bring me the flaming voodoo canonball!
By the way, is this Easy or Mega Monkey Mode?

Fastest way to beat the game is: Shift+W
instant win Wink just kidding, lol.

It would be fun if you used Shift+J though, lightsaber sounds with swordfights ^_^
it will be mega monkey mode
if one chooses easy seafights you can beat rottinham with on hit
one needs the third last upgrade thats "Schmerzspender 2000" in the german version
i think the best tactic is to beat 4 pirates and also upgrade 4 times in a single segment run

also new times :

chapter 1 : 2  min (missed a boat once)
chapter 2 : 12 min (took wrong route once)
chapter 3 : 17 min (tried something new)
(all in one try and i tried something new during chapter 3. i could have been about 4 minutes faster there.
i also made a few other small mistakes but sub 30 min should do to get to chapter 4)

altogether 31 minutes an improvement of 5-7 minutes is possible (with a good 3rd chapter)
