Haven't tried it yet. Currently I'm making a giant mess in an old version of Better Than Wolves, because TFC got a little too grindy for my taste. It played like a shoddily programmed PtW MMORPG, to the point where I could almost see the ingame shop menu. Thankfully the next update will fix that a good bit, try at least, but that update is taking a while. BTW, meanwhile, it a combination of awesome and masochism. I've been through Daggerfall dungeons that were less high on evil than some parts of that mod. Almost every other dungeon, actually. Hence the outdated version, so that I still have access to the single most broken item in all of MC; the bed.

1.4.2? Eh...loads of additions, but after seeing what the modding community can do, vanilla MC is just...so what? The update adds good stuff (switching off mob griefing is a gift from freaking God), sure, but nothing I'm overly interested in.
Meet Stakhanov!
Im mainly only interested in the Vanilla version of Minecraft. If SDA has a server for it, I'd be more than happy to play on it, and I'd probably make it into a second series on my YouTube, like server games, or building with a few regulars or something like that, I really enjoy 1.4.2 or 1.4.5 as it is now, and I am loving the whole Anvil system. I'm not sure if this thread is still around, but how is it going on a server? I read a little earlier in the thread that the original host hasn't been active since December.

There was some talk of setting up a new server, but long story short is that no one was capable of setting one up. Sadly enough a spare computer and an internet connection speed to make God's face green are things no one had laying around.
Meet Stakhanov!
I could host a simple SMP one, however it would require me to be on Hamachi, and everyone else to be on my Hamachi Networks, and even then, it would be running 6 days a week.

Not sure how whoever else is left feels about that, but I myself aren't a fan of anything more complex than "hit connect button -> Profit". And the 6 days/week thing I presume won't be as big a concern as, say, connection stability and lag.

EDIT: Definitely should have mentioned before that I don't actually know what Hamachi is. I've heard the term once or twice, but that's it. Looking for an explanation results in many servers with that distinction and very little info in the mess of noise. My internet connection speed being that of a snail with a broken foot (or whatever snails have) doesn't help.
Meet Stakhanov!
Hamachi is a freeware thing, (google logmein Hamachi, downloads in about 10 seconds), It then allows me to give people the Username and Password of a network I've established and allow you to associate with my computer. Once on my network, it then allows you to join things I've hosted.

So yeah, once connected to my Hamachi, it will automatically do it every time you boot your computer up, so then you can just open Minecraft, multiplayer, connect, join. Of course, I've never hosted a large scale server, so I will need to test with some select users from around the world in order to check they have a stable connection.

Okay. The last server used a whitelist to simply prevent anyone not on the list from logging in, which worked well enough.

You'll definitely ought to check that. I know at least a few people on the old server were from either NA or EU, not sure if anyone lived outside that area.

If you do and that works out, any mods, tools or plugins or something you plan on adding, or just plain old vanilla?
Meet Stakhanov!
I can run a simple Vanilla server from the Minecraft Host no problems. However, mods I would need a bukkit or some other form of host in order to work with it.

The Minecraft host also comes with a built in white/blacklist and server settings so limiting restrictions would not be too hard.

O...kay. I don't know jack about hosting a server, so I don't really know what that means. Still, after having played TFC and BTW (along with a few smaller mods) I honestly can't see vanilla MC being at all interesting to play, SSP or SMP. Not sure if you could set up a modded server, if you'd even want to, but I personally think it'd be more interesting than vanilla. Reason being that both offer a large number of things to do and build that in vanilla either doesn't exist or is completely pointless, although they both have their drawbacks, of course.

Handy.
Wow this brings up a host of memories... Does anyone still remember this old server?
heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh
Oh, I sure do. Both maps, too. Reminds me of just how monotone vanilla MC really is/was. I smelted thousands of glass in basic furnaces and manually mined well over 1K obsidian. Placed the lot by hand, too. Would have really liked to have some machines for that, in hindsight.

Wow this old forum thread still exists?

@ Lefty: I have a map backup of the old server with wheatley town and stuff.
I'm currently doing a world tour of it and upload it to my YouTube channel.
If you wanna check it out: http://youtube.com/user/royhess666
I will upload the video within this week.

I slowly remember you guys from the good old times Smiley

Alright folks,
if you want to see a world tour of the good old Minecraft SDA server, check this out:

A world download is not available at this point, since the packed ZIP archive is still over 500mb Smiley

Ha, I got more than a few laughs from you showing my base. That defence tower is an Empress lighthouse, by the by. Notice how the top looks like III, Roman numeral for 3? Yeah.

I also noticed that the server map you have is outdated. For one, I finished the pool (that random torch was later replaced with lava, it was a test on how to best light the area). For another, I build a massive terrace wheat farm next to the tree farm (glassed, naturally). Also, that main area with my chests, project list and everything? Replaced all visible stone with obsidian at a later date. All of it. Pretty sure you saw that at some point, and if not I should have recorded a video of it way back when. Just FYI, but I think my in-game statistic list said I mined out...eh, I think 1.3K Obsidian? And that was before Efficiency enchantments, or even the...I think Beta 1.2 change that made Obsidian take 5 seconds less to mine out, so it only took 10 seconds IIRC. Yes, I did manage to deplete a diamond pickaxe solely on mining Obsidian. I actually kept it in a chest next to my obsidian farm under my base.

That building you didn't show that was build way the hell out in nowhere was Lefty's Middle-O-Nowhere base. I actually build a path to it through the Nether and just showed up one day. Scared the daylights out of Lefty if I recall.

Ah man, that Nether map is old. I made so many cobble paths leading everywhere in my search for Glowstone. I think I got over a full double check of glowstone from the Nether. Which was quite an accomplishment for a vanilla server, before enchantments existed even. It also didn't save my Zombie Pig Death Camp. Pity, because that thing was just awesome for getting cooked meat from Zombie Pigman. You know, back when they dropped cooked pork.

@~35:30 A ghast spawned right below the walkway, and due to their (crap) hit-box-to-body ratio the body of the ghast ended up clipping through the walkway. I do remember that, it was awesome.

@~40:48 That place was build after I went to visit where Lefty was building. I started mining the area, I remember Lefty being amazed at me pulling 27 blocks worth of Lapis Lazuli out of the ground, and I don't remember exactly how but Lefty ended up either asking me to build that glass dome or he got inspiration from yours truly.

@~41:20 Ah hah, oh man, that's...wow. That's old. Like, that's old old. Way way back when I sectioned off caves and named areas to denote how far away they were from the entrance. The names from closest to farthest are Thebel -> Arqa -> Yabbashah -> Tziah ->  Harabah -> Adamah. I'm sure you can figure out why Roll Eyes

@~51:00 As I recall Bjorn placed a massive cluster of TNT, teleported someone inside and the entire thing went boom. He then place another, bigger batch, made it go boom, and declared that to be TNTley. I remember him and Mage warning the server that it was about to lag like a monster before they set the second batch off.

@~52:22 I don't remember building that cube. It definitely doesn't have enough glass to be my signature style. I think Mage build that, but I don't know, I don't remember ever seeing it

Oh hi Rusty Bucket Bay Harbour! Amazingly enough that was the one place where I didn't build something encased in glass. Yes, I would have glassed the TNTley house, I just never got around to it.

Glad you remember the good old times.
And yes the world save I have is very very outdated, months before I stopped playing on the server afair.
I don't think there's enough charact
2000 posts! Oh my lawd.
This was very popular, I see.
SDA should have more of these that you guys gave to us.
A huge multiplayer server of any game, for the runners of SDA/SRL.
You guys hosted something amazing, I can tell.
Thank you!
