I'm thinking about giving this game a shot, but I honestly don't think I could come up with an impressive time.

Does anyone else like this game? if so, let's start a discussion about the game, and any tricks/tips you've picked up along the way.

Cheers,

SR

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
There's an emulated run of this game on Bisqwit's site, but one trick is extremely hard (with precise movement, you exit the well 1 hit away from death)

I hope you can fire bubbles faster than when you were blowing bubbles as a kid
Thats impressive even for an emulated run in my opinion. I'll have to play this game through a few times and see whats possible and what isnt...

I believe this emulated run manipulates luck, takes damage to save time but doesn't abuse programming errors.
how can you manupulate luck? just do savestate a lot?

I still dont get how he's shooting so fast without an umbrella...
*bump*

anyone else have input?

i would watch this. i love this game, it gave me fits as a kid. i remember when i finally beat it.

as for hints, i got nothin'.
Okay, heres the first draft of a run i came up with. It's pretty much like the TAS run on bisqwits site

1st room: bonus stage, get shoes, get honeycomb, exit
store: buy bottle
1st dragon
well: get both honeycombs, kill dragon, get hammer, exit via bubble
get saw
kill 3rd dragon
right tower: get honeycomb, kill dragon, get ice bottle
level 3-2: get to fireplace, kill dragon, navigate dungeon, kill bird, get cane, exit
left tower: kill dragon, navigate dungeon, kill bird, get crown, exit
kill skeletal dragon
last level.

now, having to regain health is going to be a bitch, so i might have to go out of my way for a few more honeycombs. I also didn't include bees, which will be helpful.

is there any way to be certain which maharito is the real one? because it would suck to have a good run and have to go through all four rooms to find the real boss.

feel free to make ammendments to this, and tips are always helpful.
Not a hint, just entertaining:

Haha, so true. I always got the feather though...Milon's secret castle was always one of those games I tried to beat 100% every time (I would search for hours in the fireplace room for a honeycomb before I found out it doesn't exist)

I'd watch it.  I never was any good at it (the few times I played it) so that would make it all the more interesting.
Ok, i've been practicing on emulator, and I have a sense of what this game is going to require for it to be a good run:

1. Luck. Umbrellas are going to be key for this run, but it's not always possible to get an umbrella without going out of my way. Also, i'm going to have to figure out the patterns of the bosses attacks if this is going to happen...also, the last room is totally random, so it could take me anywhere from 1-5 minutes depending on how lucky I am. and chances are i will not survive more than 2 wrong rooms.

2. keeping my health up is going to be a bitch, especially between 2nd and 3rd boss, and right tower onwards. yea.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
The fireballs the boss throws I assume to be totally random since the emulated run isn't even optimized.
nah, there's a pattern. it'll just be a bitch to memorize.

Edit: though i am not too sure if the pattern is the same every time...but once you enter, there's a set pattern.

I'd rather spam out bubbles and hope I don't die.

Has anyone tried getting behind the boss, or does it turn and kill you?
it doesn't work, it kinda just jumps in place and traps you in.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
You can't even get behind it?

How?  Game prevents you?  can't get through fireballs?
Boss goes backwards and squishes ya?

I'm not familar with this idea, by the way
when you jump behind him, he moves back and jumps in place.

Now I know for sure the emulated run isn't optimized.  The boss aren't beaten fast enough and the 3 remaining health bars weren't used to save time against bosses.

Does the current route permit risk-taking, trying to get as close to the boss as possible and nail it with bubbles?
it's going to be really hard without a turbo button...trying to kill those higher dragons as fast as possible is a bitch...
So I'm bumping a topic that hasn't been touched in nearly 8 years but if anyone is interested, I should be submitting a run of this game within a week or two.  I've been working on this game for the last 2-3 months and have put in somewhere around 1,000 attempts.  I'm currently 10-15 seconds away from my desired time.  More information to come.

I so can't wait! I hated this game with a passion when I was a kid as it never did seem to make sense when I played... then I gave up.

I eagerly look forward to this game being beaten!!

Wow, I can't wait!  I was routing this game a few months ago but just gave up because the bosses are so ridiculously random and the end is infuriating.  What kind of times are you getting?  There's a Japanese RTA that is 11:22, which is right around where I expected my final time to be.  Might be worth a watch if you haven't seen it already:

Good luck!
Thanks for the link.  I must say that it's both interesting and a little discouraging.

Our routes are frighteningly similar except for one major difference: I was gathering exactly enough dollars to go into level 2-2 and purchase the fire proof vest.  While I was aware that navigating through the well, defeating its boss, and then defeating the boss on the 2nd floor without the 2 additional honeycombs and fireproof vest was possible, it never seemed likely to pull off in a run.  The best I've done without it was getting to the 2nd floor boss outside of the well and dying in one hit.  I may have to rethink that part of my route now which is somewhat discouraging.  The rest of my route is virtually identical to his, including stopping in the health shop right before the skeleton boss (7th crystal).

My best run occurred sans splits or recording.  I had somewhere between 12:35-12:45 (looked at the clock when I started and stopped).  My best recorded run is 12:56 and that's with gathering $25 (easy to do on the 1st floor) and going into 2-2 to purchase the fire vest.  I had a run where I got to Maharito in 12:15 and he showed up in the 4th room out of 4.  Knowing now that there's a run of 11:22 without the vest, I may need to tweak that part of my route a little bit more.  Skipping that money and that entire room could easily cut a minute off.  The downside is that it's going to create a ridiculous amount of resets.

A couple other points about his run which I noticed: his early boss fights are pretty terrible.  He makes up for it with solid boss fights on the 3rd floor.  To those who haven't played the game, it's hard to explain that you can't just go into the later bosses with guns blazing and survive.  I spent many wasted hours trying to memorize the 4 or 5 detectable patterns of the skeleton boss and it proved to be mostly a waste of time.

However, I'm confused about why he chooses to go to the red room at the end.  The red room takes him a while to get to and it contains no boxing glove to shrink Milon.  The only explanation which I could think of is that Maharito opens his arms quicker in the red room.  I was convinced a while back that the red room Maharito gives you more chances to hit him but I figured I was just imagining things.

Thanks again for the link, PJ.  I'm going to have to spend a lot of time practicing the well without the fireproof vest tomorrow night.  I believe that if I get that part of the game down, 11:20-11:30 is realistic.  If you don't mind me asking, what was your best recorded time before you gave up on this game?

Double Post Update: Just spent a little bit of time messing around with the well escape without the fireproof vest.  While it's tricky, this does seem doable and it's going to cut at least a minute off of my route.  I haven't timed it yet so it may very well cut off more than a minute.  It doesn't even seem like I have to waste $5 on the 2 bars of health where you get the Saw (after the Well).  Assuming I can consistently do the well escape quickly, the only other tricky part is going to be surviving the later boss fights with only 10 bars of health rather than 12 or 13.  I've gotten pretty good at the later boss fights (skeleton is still real tough depending on what pattern he gives you) so I think that I can probably make the adjustment fairly quickly.

Needless to say, this will probably delay my submission for a few more weeks.  I'll keep at it.  More to come.
