Hey all,
I was looking into some games to start speed running with, and I looked in the requested runs thread. I did a search and I don't think there is a thread for this game. I am going to start working on this one for my first legit speed run (but will probably end up being very casual and non-competitive).
From looking at some TAS it doesn't look too hard (or lengthy), but after trying it in person on my NES I just got setup, it's tricky in some spots... I mean it is a Capcom game. You play as Mickey (Minnie tags along as an NPC) and you platform your way to save your friend. Minnie follows you around, but makes the game have an added level of skill in manipulating her to the correct positions/times. Minnie does not take damage, but can fall/fail at platforming jumps. If Minnie falls into a pit, Mickey just kills himself (morbid). I think level 1 won't be too bad once I get used to it. It also looks like if you get Minnie stuck near a door while Mickey goes and grabs an item, Minnie can trigger the level to switch the rooms by exiting (still need to confirm).
I am going to start the thread to gather my ideas and thoughts about the different levels of the game. The game is a platformer with 5 levels:
=======================================================================
1. Fun House: multi room platforming with ladders to traverse up and down between levels with two "tricky" spots: getting past the cat, and the "wizard/witch". The cat shoots a steady stream or bullets you have to jump and dodge in between (think Bowser's hammers at the end of SMB). The witch shoot in a pattern, while jumping up and down. I have found she kills you in one hit if you touch her. If you get hit by a bullet, you can run through her to grab the key behind her. This may be a potential strategy to use.
Guesstimation Frustration Level: 5/10. There is some backtracking you have to do in this level which seems manageable with time. The cat seems pretty pattern driven so he will just take patience and practice. The witch, I will need to find a good strategy to get by her fast (you don't need to kill her).
=======================================================================
2. The Ocean: straight forward left to right platforming level with a crocodile boss at the end. The platforming looks simple, but already trying to speed run through it has resulted in MANY deaths for me. The enemies are relentless and plentiful, while the waves from the ocean surge up in spots throwing jellyfish at you. This level may be easy once you memorize the timing, but I think it could easily be one of the harder levels for me (much more memorization and very accurate timing). The boss at the end doesn't seem to hard, just shoot him a bunch as fast as you can.
Guesstimation Frustration Level: 8/10. The timing is going to SUCK, the boss seems cake after all the jumps.
=======================================================================
3. The Woods: linear "platforming" level with a snake boss at the end. I say platforming in quotes, because this one looks to have very minimal amount of jumping between platforms, as it does just running and hopping over holes/pits in the ground. This level reminds me of SMB 4-1, where it seems like you can just run through it as one of the easier levels in the run. You run through the woods and the different seasons. You change seasons by going into a tree in certain parts, which ports you to the next part of the level. Straightforward, no backtracking.
Guesstimation Frustration Level: 3/10. The memorization of the tree warp things might take time, but this levels has a lot of hidden SMB style stars which allow you to just run through enemies. In the TAS they kill the boss with this method, so that looks HUGE.
=======================================================================
4. The Pirate Ship: 4 rooms, with ladders connecting between the different levels. No real platforming, again a straightforward level. There is a boss at the end, but it seems like with a full HP bar taking a few hits wouldn't slow you down too much. There are 2 minor enemies that look like they might cause some havoc if you are not prepared for them. Looks to be the shortest level.
Guesstimation Frustration Level: 4/10. With only 4 rooms (including the boss), it seems simple after watching the TAS. The boss might be annoying, and the minor enemies might slow you down trying to kill them. I don't know if just running into them speeds you up enough. No platforming struggles here.
=======================================================================
5. The Castle: level similar to the first level, in that it needs some backtracking and more platforming in all directions. The birds can grab Minnie if you are not careful, and they just whisk her away. If they steal her, you have to go find random mini games to find her (25% chance per game to find her, total random). This could single-handedly RUIN some runs in my opinion. Having to micromanage where Minnie is AND Mickey, during the platforming parts could take a lot of work to perfect. There is a mini boss halfway through (the same boss from the ship) that you do not have to kill. The final boss looks very pattern based, but could take time to get it down.
Guesstimation Frustration Level: 10/10. The platforming doesn't look to hard, but the pink birds that steal Minnie may make it super frustrating ESPECIALLY after having a great run and the bird just trolling you for the reset.
=======================================================================
Total Guesstimation Frustration Level: 7/10
Overall, it doesn't look TOO bad, and I will definetly need to work on it. If anyone else has seen this TAS or played the game and has any tips, hints, glitches, or suggestions for a quick run... I am all ears... GET IT... MICKEY HAS BIG EARS!!!!
Thanks for reading/helping,
