got banned from youtube for uploading MGS4 video. nootube ftw!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I'm trying to improve my 2h43 BB time. I just beat Act 1 in 21m54s.
That's a 10 minutes improvement over my previous run.  Grin Big thanks to tri-Ace Fanboy, it's all because of your vid.  Wink
Although I don't really get how I lost 2 minutes on you, I guess a sub 22 minutes is good enough for me, well that'll make it for now.
I just wanted to know how many saves you did for your Act 1 record? And where and when were these saves please?
Thanks!

Glad it helped. I listed my saves in the video's description:

1-After the initial cutscenes (3:45)
2-After the Mk.II (5:10)
3-After the Oil Drum (8:14)
4-Advent Palace (9:31)
5-After the FROGS (16:47)
6-After the B&B Cutscene (18:32)
7-End of Act (19:50)

You're probably getting behind on the FROGS. I had several runs I thought were faster but turned out to be slower... it's really hard to tell.

I got all confused then as I was watching the first set of videos and wondered why he didn't skip the Resistance, didn't notice there 2 runs on the page.

Does anyone know if it's worth/possible using an S.G. mine at the back of the truck during the second phase of the Act 2 APC chase?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Act 2 beaten in 45m08s.
2m27s slower that the 1h58 run, I'm quite happy with that.  Smiley
Now I need to get how this Act 3 trick works!  Undecided

Are downloaded camos allowed in a New Game run? I don't think they should be, but you don't need to do anything to unlock them, just download. The Snake camo released today knocks out people in one punch or roll, among other minor things.

I don't think it's worth the time it takes to equip and set them up.

MGS4 is a gaming masterpiece.
Here is my recent speedrun time for the BBE- 2:07:19

This was completed before the Act 3 & Crying Wolf tactics were discovered.
My act times are as follows:-
Act 1 - 22:14 (slow considering times now known possible)
Act 2 - 43:10
Act 3 - 1:11:20
Act 4 - 1:33:05
Act 5 - 2:07:19
Act 2 & 4 were my best.
I refuse to use the Auto-Aim feature.
Played sections over and over to find the fastest possible routes. Didn't look to perfect Act 1 (Keen to see what I could do in the other Acts) but tried to do so with the others. FROGS in Act 1 cost me time. Didn't want to copy other people for my whole run. Seen videos & looked to improve upon them. Tri Ace Fanboy's Act 1 vid is excellent! I know now I can beat 22 minutes for Act 1.

Saved as soon as the boss fight commenced.

Laughing Octopus defeated in 1min 47 secs (Based on save at beginning of beauty battle after her beast form) Weapons used - Railgun, P90 & the M82A2

Raging Raven defeated in 34 secs (Based on save at the beginning of the beauty battle after the beast form) Weapons used - Railgun

Crying Wolf defeated in 3 mins 11 secs (Based on save at the beginning of the beauty battle after the beast form) Weapons used - M82A2 (Quicker than the Railgun)

Metal Gear Ray defeated in 1 min 33 secs (Major damage caused when Ray lept towards Rex & I charged at Ray before it landed) (Based on save at the start of the fight with Ray & end result of Act 4 screen)

Screaming Mantis defeated in 2 mins 34 secs (Based on save at the beginning of the beauty battle after the beast form) Weapons used - M4 custom

With the new methods now known I could lose at least 2 mins on Act 1, a minute or 1 min 30 secs for Crying Wolf, & 7 or 8 mins for the Resistance. Wont attempt another run for a while, if at all. It's obviously not the fastest but I'm very happy with Act 2 & 4.

SAVING is only based on checkpoints. You can play all the way up to just before the end of a checkpoint & save & your time will be no different to a save at the beginning of the checkpoint.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Amazing stuff, it seems you were lightning fast on Act 2!  Shocked
Anyway, I can't make that Act 3 trick to work... this is boring...  Sad
The trick seems to be about the location of the resistant being saved further into the city (I don't know how though), which allows you to run there and that's why the resistant isn't there at the beginning of the 1h58 vid.
omaru : I don't get how you had the resistant right there at the beginning, then you ran to the end and he was there too. That goes beyond my comprehension.  Undecided

MGS4 is a gaming masterpiece.
Thanks. Modified the Screaming Mantis time to it's correct time (I had previously put 2 mins 51 secs which was based mistakingly on an older save)

I don't see how you can meet the Resistance member ahead unless somehow the Signal Interceptor registers his presence in the last area. If it's to do with the saves then I had a save at the beginning of Act 3 & a save at the final area. Played those saves again to see if anything could be done with those, but no luck.

Hmm, well I was considering the fact that I would already have it equipped following the Octopus FROGs.

It's possible to do it without even bothering to deal with any of the PMC zombies. Just stay on the gun the whole time. A few attempts should do it. Best bet is to make sure that you aim at the brains of the Gekko (Highlighted by the red circle with the Solid Eye) as that destroys them extremely fast. This will cause a few of the other Gekko to fire at you probably killing any PMCs that climb on board. I employed this method on my run. Didn't have to deal with any PMCs.
Yeah they never really hinder me but on occasion I have to deal with 1 or 2 which is annoying.

Out of interest, is there any quick way to destroy the doors? It feels like it takes forever when I do it; do people shoot down the middle to take out both or anything? Or just alternate between the two? I tried using RPG's, etc. but it seemed to have no effect.
MGS4 is a gaming masterpiece.
Played around & explosives are ineffective for the doors in Act 2's APC section. The best way seems to be to aim at the middle and after a few moments (actual point would need to be determined) start shooting the left hand door. Then just before you move over to the right & the doors are just in view, pummel the right door. If it can be done correctly, on returning to a full view of both doors shooting again at the middle they should drop at the same time. Thought of this during my run but it would of taken a while longer to get this timing correct. Could only gain a few seconds if done as intended.
Direct Assault!
Someone at GameFAQs said that the doors go down faster if you destroy the MGS. I assume that counts as a kill though.

I haven't tested this but on the Gekko part I'd try to switch to night vision and shoot the M82A2 instead. Easier to aim, can take them down in 1 shot and much faster/safer to punch (Snake camo) the guards that way.

Congrats on the time Mosaic-J, do you have a video? You should submit it if you do, that's the 3rd fastest know time so far. Did you use any new tricks on Acts 2 and 5?
Refusing to use auto-aim could hamper your time, as it is actually very beneficial in some spots.

Either way, good time.

Mosaic-J, do you play PlanetSide? =p
MGS4 is a gaming masterpiece.
Thanks M8. Worked at it relentlessly! No, I didn't video my run. Haven't uploaded a vid onto YouTube to this very day! But I will gladly answer any questions you have with regards to my run.

Notable time savers in Act 2:-

Cove Valley Village: From the start run around the buildings to the left-hand side all the way until you encounter the PMC soldier near the bottom of the hill. The Rebels will be free due to the other PMCs moving to your start position to inspect. This helps alot if you haven't befriended them as of yet.

Powerstation approach: Run all the way along the left-hand side until you reach the section where the wall begins to curve off to the left just before the PMCs location. Throw 2 blue coloured smoke grenades, 1 ahead of you & 1 slightly to the right. As they go off keep running around the left until you reach Drebin. Tested this against the right-hand route & it's much faster! (Strangely in that Jap vid he moves along the right! Time-lost!) Keep left all the way until the Vista Mansion checkpoint. Again tested this against other routes & it was the fastest!

Vista Mansion: Throw a blue smoke grenade to your right (Don't hit any PMCs!) & run along the ridge until you reach the road. After the cutscene run left, up the stairs, then run to the left-hand side of the stone structure, straight up the stairs & through the front door. Equip a stun grenade, go through the next door & throw it up into the corner where the PMCs are standing. Wait until it goes off & run up! (In the Jap vid he waits at the bottom of the stairs-time lost again!)

For those that would like to know, here is the fast method I used against Laughing Octopus:
Equip the Railgun, M82A2 & the P90.

1st hit) From the start turn around & roll into cover behind the wall. Equip & charge the Railgun & follow LO as she moves out into the corridor, hopefully to your left. Blast her when she stops & roll back through the door for cover & equip the P90 & shoot down her little missiles.
2nd hit) Wait a second (Allows her to get to the position we want her to) and run to the end of the corridor (A few steps away) Equip & shoot her posing as the Medical Mannequin with the M82A2.
3rd hit) Wait a second & then run to the door ahead of you (next to where she posed) She should now be posing as the Metal Gear Mk II in the corridor. Follow her & shoot her with the M82A2. Wait for the mines to explode & then run around the corridor taking the 2nd available door on your left.
4th hit) She is now lying on the floor posing as a sedated Haven Trooper. Shoot her with the M82A2 & then immediately equip & charge the Railgun facing the door you entered....
5th hit) She will now jump through the window. She will either stop & shoot or move away. Blast or follow accordingly & then blast.
6th hit) She is now on the floor posing as Naomi. Blast her with the M82A2 & immediately equip the Railgun & charge....
Final hit) She will now get up & move away or jump to the ceiling, blast her for the finish!

Time taken 1 min 47 seconds. Constantly moving in a circular route encountering LO on it at all times makes it very efficient. The Railgun is most effective when she is moving or stationary shooting at you. It does little damage when she is hiding or posing. The M82A2 is suitable at these points.

Mountain Trail: Constantly running only stopping to shoot a few PMCs with single headshots. There is no need to shoot the Sniper lying down above you. Just keep to the left slightly to stay out of his sight. At the point where the PMC is near the Claymore shoot him & you can run to the right of it to shave seconds (It all adds up!) head up the hill, shoot the PMC soldier, run across, down the steps & around (Just like the Jap vid)
MGS4 is a gaming masterpiece.

Thanks m8. No I don't. Haven't heard of Planetside, what is it? Just bought my PS3 for MGS4. Been waiting for the game for ages! It's turned out to be 1 of the best games I've ever played! I have a Xbox 360 as well.
MGS4 is a gaming masterpiece.
My only decent time saver on Act 5 would be during the Ship Bow section. Hard to really improve the other sections.

Equip the MK 2 pistol & the MGL-140 Grenade Launcher & select stun grenades (hopefully saved from a previous playthrough) then from the start, run to the area in the middle in front of you, keep near the corner on the left & shoot the Haven Troopers that land. Wait a second as this timing will affect the chance of discovery if you run immediately. (As some HTs are waiting to your left up ahead) Run ahead to your right & don't stop running until you have to slide through the gap. Then roll just in front of the first white markings landing into the lying position & wait for the HTs to land directly in front of you. Drop them with 2 Mk 2 headshots. Before you get up, look left & up to drop the HT standing way above scouting the area. As soon as she falls get up & run straight ahead running behind the boxes to the door. Just as you get to the door the Gekko will land actually covering you from detection so you can gain access quickly. (In that Jap vid he has to deal with 2 extra HTs on the left-hand side & craw for a few seconds. My method is a few seconds faster)

Used the Big Boss Facemask whilst running around on the first wave on HTs in the Command Centre. Getting the order right can save seconds!
Also on the second wave of Haven Troopers, I took all of them down sniping me from above with the MGL-140 (stun grenades selected) Dropped them very quickly. The glass is not a problem.
3rd wave was a combination of the BB facemask & the Mk 2 pistol.

Hope this helps Tri Ace Fanboy.
tri-ace:

I'm having trouble following a specific part of your Act 1 strategy; in the bit just before Advent Palace, when you run along the right and tranq the first guy, there's a guard behind the boxes you briefly stop behind, behind some sandbags if you recall. Well, on your video he's looking the other way, whenever I do it he's always looking at me, no matter what. Any advice..?
I couldn't get that Resistance skip to work. How does it go again? I couldn't get that video (the onw from the Japanese site) to work so I missed it.

I just ran straight for the 3rd section (had the LB face camo on) but nothing happened when I got there.
Direct Assault!
I figured out the Resistance "skip". It's a very dirty trick though... same as cheating for me.

Anyway the game doesn't update your stats (time, kills, alerts, etc.) when you save, it keeps the stats you had when you got to the checkpoint. But... it updates the Resistance's location. So what you do is trail him normally until he gets to the next screen, but don't follow him. Save, quit, load and you're back at the start of the screen, with whatever time you had when you first got there... but the Resistance is in the next area.

So you have to play through the first 2 rooms twice, once trailing the Resistance and then just running through like the video does. It doesn't skip anything, you actually play longer. You're just cheating the timer and making part of your playthrough not count.

Is a trick like this allowed in SDA? I really don't like it. Undecided

Mosaic-J: Thanks for the tips. Do you think the Blue Grenades can be replaced by normal Smokes, or tranqs? Mostly wondering if it would be similar in New Game.

Asphyx1ateD: That guard moves to the right if he notices that the others were taken down. It's mostly timing, hard to explain... maybe you're going too fast.
