I know. Everyone is looking forward to this run no matter what.

Last night I began running the beginning of the game. Since I have not played this game in a while I had to acquaint my self with the controls again. This did not take long.

For now the run is going to be segmented. (Any thoughts on this?). So far I have been practicing up to where you you defend City Hall and other buildings and the battle with Bon Bonne. The first segment will probably end with saving at Data before this after you find the key and the battle after that.

If anyone has any comments on this part of the game like strategies or what weapons to buy, if any, they would be greatly appreciated.

Rock on, Earthbound. Rock on.
Whoohoo!  Good luck, Ifrit, definitely looking forward to this one, I'm glad somebody remembered.  ^_^

YEEESSS! Thank you so much! My crusade has ended.

I think a segemented run is good. I'm sure a single-segment is possible but segmented is good for now. And yeah, I think thats a pretty good place to end the first segment because the begining is a buch of story elements and thats exactly where the real action starts.

Are you going to make it a 100% run or not. Whats required has been discussed before but not fully.

I think right now I will just go for speed.
Killer Chobocos don't get any chocolate.
I'll set the PAR time at under 3 hours.... any comments? (cuz I can rip through hard mode in under 3 easily if I ignore the stupid museum quest)

Alright. First update on the run.  :D. Anyway.

My time for the first segment was 00:10:15 according to the save file. So far it has not been recorded because I do not have any tapes. >:(. Anyway. This segment can be improved. I will list the problems/questions I have so far.

When you have to save the guy so you can get the Mine Parts Kit I skipped every enemy but destroyed the snakes. The problem I encountered here was that for some reason I felt the need to get some extra Zenny.  ???. Anyway, this shouldn't happen again. I guess it was like I was normally playing the game.

I went to junk shop and sold the Power Kaiser buster part (I got it at the beginning) and bought the Power Kaiser Alpha and the Range Booster. Should I buy these or not? I bought the Power Kaiser Alpha because, obviously, it increases my Attack power more than Power Kaiser. I got the Range Booster to help attack from a safer distance for some bosses. Any thoughts on this?

I went to center of town and went through houses and got broken motor. Does anyone think this is needed or wasted time?

I got lucky when finding the key. I destroyed the blue one quickly and got it. I was wondering if there is anyway to tell which one has the key or is it pure luck?

Lastly, any tips on the reaverbot would be greatly appreciated. Im basically fighting it like normal and am wondering if there are faster ways.

So far the time is 00:10:15 but I know I can make it faster. For some reason the Playstation 2 would not read my memory card so the time includes that. Also I have a question about the in game time. It seems to go fast. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

These are the parts I had some trouble with and can imporve upon. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.  Smiley

I'd keep the Power Kaiser and rid the Range Booster. You shouldn't be running away from bosses during speedruns, anyways.

I wouldn't

Can't you see which one has the key by looking at their back?

I haven't played this game in a long while, so my answers might not be accurate. Try to get the skateboard; it saves a lot of time.

I got the Range Booster to be careful but since it is segmented there is no reason for it. Im not exactly running from it though. Im keeping a distance from it but I am still damaging the boss at a rapid pace while still manuvering the attacks it makes. Anyway, more power would be better against it though. I will see what I can do with that tonight.

You shouldn't get the broken motor unless your going to make a segment where you hunt for alot of Zenny to upgrade usefull weapons.

That will take time but it could make alot of boss fights a breeze. But I haven't played it in a while either so I'm not able to give you 100% confident advice.

I think long ranged weapons can be usefull in destroying enemies from afar while running towards them(so you wouldn't have to worry about dodging them when you get to them.) but not much help during most bosses except for maybe the one your fighting the Bonnes in the air(but by then you'll probably already have alot more range buster parts than the range booster, so I probably wouldn't get it.)

I did a much better run last night. Nearly shaved a whole minute off  :D. I got a time of 00:09:16. Anyway, I got the Power Kaiser Alpha instead and it helped out a lot. And I didn't get the broken motor this time either. I had a few mistakes this time and will improve upon them today and will hopefully get a completed first segment.

EDIT:  Just a quick update. I improved the first segment to 00:08:45. Im pretty sure I can get this to lower than 00:08:30.

EDIT:  I completed the first segment and got a time of 00:08:40. This is my best time so far and can be improved by maybe 2 or 3 seconds. For now Im leaving it alone and beginning work on the next segment. Grin

So you never got knocked down fighting any of the enemies? That would look realy bad.
At the moment I am trying to figure a way to fight the Servebots before Bon Bonne. Any suggestions?

Sorry can't remember too well. If it's the flying ones your talking about you should probably have high firing rate and range.

I went ahead and recorded the second segment and stopped before Marlwolf. I originally intended to add the Marlwolf into the segment but I kept having trouble for some reason. In the future the battle will be added or possibly the entire game will be completed in one segment. Anyway the time for the second segment is around 00:04:05 and was the best I have done the mission the segment features.

What weapons are you planning on making and have you taking alot of damage?
Edit history:
Ifrit: 2005-06-02 10:15:35 pm
I have not taken much damage I believe. I know I got hit once by Bon Bonne slap but it did little damage. I believe I was hit by the reaverbot in downtown but I did not fall down. Besides that, nothing. (I might check it tonight unless Im working on the next segment.)

Im glad you brought that up because I am unsure about that. Which ones are worth making? I haven't played this in a long time and I vaguely remember the special weapons.

Well I think the Homing Missles are a no brainer. Even though they only become really usefull once they are upgraded a bit and thats not possible with out some money.

It's really hard to say because alot of them are usefull but only when upgraded a bit and that is a problem in a speed run. Does anyone know this game really well and could tell us which weapons are usefull at low levels?
My feelings on The Demon Rush
I would like to see this run, and you might think I have lots of advice, but I don't because I only played this game through once.  One thing I did notice in this thread is the lack of knowledge in routes and weapons, which usually leads to a suboptimal run.

I suggest you play through the game at least once or twice before recording Ifrit, so you can try out routes and weapons.  I know that sounds tedious, but you will get a much better run after doing this, trust me.

Off-topic:  Has anyone played The Misadventures of Tron Bonne?  Is it fun?
Forward standard-by-ten .
I heard great things about Misadventures, but haven't played it.
I was thinking of playing the game a few times like Wednesday or Tuesday...Im probably going to do that.

I will spend all night and tomorrow playing this game and will let you know what I find helpful and not. In the meantime, if anyone (I mean anyone) has any comments that could possbily help, please by all means post.

I myself didn't know this game when I was playing it. I only beat it once or twice.

Alright. After playing and reading some information, I have come to a conclusion about special weapons. In my opinion (an correct me if I am wrong) special weapons are not worth the trouble.

All the weapons seem to take a good chunk of Zenny away. The only weapon I saw that deserves my Zenny is the Shining Laser (costs a good 835,000 Zenny Shocked to upgrade to the max) and even then doesn't seem worth it because of what is needed just to obtain it. Its a lot to obtain and I believe (again, correct me if I am wrong) you can only get it at the end and use it against the final boss.

To obtain the Shining Laser, three items are needed:

Weapon Plans: Found in some ruins. Not that hard.

Prism Crystal: Return all eight artifacts to the museum. 6 of them are underground whereas the other 2 are not. One involves me racing in the contest around downtown (which will not be fun to participate in or watch, trust me) and the other involves giving an item to the kids at the clubhouse.

X Buster: Trade another item in the clubhouse.

Most of that is not a problem. I have trouble doing the race. The other problem with this is that weapons aren't that great unless you upgrade them a bit. In order to make the Shining Laser the best it needs 835,000 Zenny. Shocked

Against the final boss, I read that the Shining Laser deals TONS of damage against him. I think that would be great but inorder to get it, so much time is wasted in order to save a few minutes. I myself have beaten the boss without getting hit and with the normal buster. I think showing the final battle with the buster will probably be more interesting mainly because of its difficulty and some skill acquired to beat him even if the battle is longer.

Last night when I was playing I was searching for ways to find money, in case I do obtain the Shining Laser. More playing today will reveal what else shall be done in this speed run.

Thats what I was saying(that you have to upgrade them a bit to make them usefull). But isn't it alittle harsh to say no special weapons at all. But whatever your the one with the game in your hands so I wouldn't be able to tell if what your doing is right or not.

Do the run how ever you can. After all this is only the first run. People are probably going to improve on it(hopefully people will want to).
Rock on, Earthbound. Rock on.
That seems about accurate to me.  Once the Buster is upgraded well, it's at least as potent as a number of the special weapons, if not more so simply because it doesn't rely on ammo or need to reload itself.  The only special weapons I would have suggested using would be one of the explosives (I haven't played Legends in so long, so I don't know which weapons there are, but I KNOW some of them go boom), simply because it would give you an extra option for attacking, i.e. crowd control.  Even at low power levels, it could be useful for clearing rooms of annoying tiny swarming enemies, if nothing else.  Again, I don't remember enough about the original to make any extra suggestions.
Did I shoot 3 times or once from different angles
Yeah the spread buster(pretty sure thats what it's called) is designed exactly to get people how are surronding you. It shoots three little bombs at first but you can updrade it to shoot more(thats the problem)
I played a good bit of the game so far. I believe the Powered Buster is needed because I can get it early and will be needed on one occation. In the Clozer Woods Sub-Gate, a section of the ceiling is crumbled and a special weapon is needed in order to open it. I haven't tested this idea yet. I will try it out tomorrow. The Active Buster is very helpful (item is obtained in the Clozer Woods Sub-Gate) against the Gesellschaft. But upgrading them, I doubt it.

I agree. This is the first run. I would like to create a good run, get people to view and get some help. Then this run could become faster.
