Many have thought of attempting this (I was one of them) and all of them produced nothing. This time its coming.

Keeping with my tradition of only sending in runs of games I dislike, Im going to show Mega "Man" and Dr. "Wi-wee" who is boss and run the game. Yes, I am that bored.

I am going to start tonight after a couple of rounds of Mario Kart DS and not have fun with this.

So, if anyone has anything, come out of the shadows and speak. If not, then my night just got better.

EDIT: Oops, forgot one thing. I will be doing the run on the PS1 version of the game.
Thread title:
Just remember that the hit system in this game can be abused like a red-headed stepchild and there shouldn't be a problem. Word to the wise though- I hope you remember that the hit detection for that "Sword Man infinite stun animation" is about as random as it gets. The ice snowboarding portion is pretty easy, but it's the Wily's castle portion that is the real speed run killer.

Oh, and I wouldn't be too worried about needing tanks. That Rush ability gotten at the waterfall miniboss should make up for not having it. Other than that I can only wish you the best of luck to your controller. This is one of those games where you might have to buy a replacement.  Wink

Speed Running Joy-bringer
I used to have this game, but I thought that it was weired how you had the ability to shoot normal shots while a weapon was selected.  I though that was an X4+ only thing.

I probably don't need to ask this, but what is the difference between the PS1 version and the other one?
Fucking Weeaboo
I haven't noticed a difference between the PS1 and Anniversary Collection version other than how it saves.

The game is a bit hard due to the lack of E-Tanks.  Wily Lv 4 is a killer...good luck with that.  I HATE fighting Wily which is why I haven't done this run yet.

Will happily verify it when you're done.

And how might I go about doing this?

Jump and hold the button, at the height of the jump, lay a Mega Ball. By holdin jump, you'll bounce. At the height of that jump, lay another ball. You have to be moving forward to bounce. It's  a slightly tough move to continously perform, but there are a few shourtcuts with it. Mainly, in Frost Man's Stage (The vertical area), Astro Man's stage (the MAze, and jumping OVER the pits instead of waiting for the platforms) andSword Man's stage (skipping some of the boat section.) It's also possible to skip the Bubble part of Tengu Man's stage, but it takes a ridiculous amount of skill and patience.

I haven't heard of anyone else using this technique, so I named it the Infinite Mega Ball Bounce. If this is known else where and has an actual name, tell me.

What order are you using? I'm kinda sure (but not 100%) that Tengu-Clown-Grenade-Frost and then Sword-Search-Astro-Aqua is the fastest. Also, investing in the Arrow Shot may be worth it.

I will be sure to try it out.

I haven't tried anything yet. I was wanting to see the response and any info given before starting.

We've already determined that 100% is impossible, unless you're saying not counting buying everything, since doing that is impossible.  Plus collecting every bolt is stupid, slow, and boring and I haven't seen a full list of them up anyways.

By 100%, he means that he's not 100% sure that that's the fastest route. You failed english, Sir_VG  Wink

You beat me to it.

My brain is fried from doing Legend of Mana runs.  Grin
Never give up!
Let me dig through the old stuff and see what I can find.

First thing I have is recommendations regarding the parts:

Power Shield - I'm not sure what to say about this one.  I don't think it's that necessary as far as speedrunning goes.
Spare Extra - Ideally, you won't be dying in a speedrun, so strike this one down.
Shooting Part - This comes down to style, but I personally don't favor it, as I use charge shots all the time.
Rapid Part - Ehhh..... again, not my style.  Your results may vary.
Energy Balancer - I don't see people expending THAT much weaponry to complete the game, and bosses don't rain down energy capsules on their own.  Might not be sufficient.
Exit Unit - For a 100% run, definitely.  I don't see it being used in an any%.
Laser Shot - This goes right through certain enemies' shields, and some of those enemies are right in the way, so this is not a bad idea.  Not to be combined with the purchase of Arrow Shot.
Arrow Shot - From my experience, with some enemies, this will hit the shield and spray its extra firepower PAST it, so this isn't a bad idea either.  Don't buy this if you already have Laser Shot though.
Auto Shoot - Not enough places where I see this being more useful than the previous two, actually.
Step Booster - Are there enough ladders to make this useful?  I imagine the earlier you bought this, the better off you are speed-wise.
Energy Saver - The weapons, to my knowledge, have sufficient energy as it is (except for maybe Astro Crush), so this isn't mission critical.
Super Recover - A nice powerup, although I don't imagine the runner getting THAT unlucky or needy with regards to health drops (and yes, I'm still talking about runs done on a live console).
Spare Charger - Again, I don't see the runner dying often enough during the run to make this useful.
Hyper Slider - Other than the fact your level of caution in using the slide has to go up for this to work, this is an excellent option.
High Speed Charge - I really like this part, but I'm not entirely sure it'll work against enough enemies.  I can name two bosses where this'd be useful - other than that it's stage duty for this.
Boost Part - I don't imagine you're going to stay that far away from enemies in the long run, but if you've got enough spare bolts and you've got what you need, this is a possibility.
Exchanger - Again, I don't imagine you getting that unlucky with the drops.  I haven't tested whether this combines proper with Energy Balancer, but if it does, I say 'both or none' in that respect.

Also, things regarding bosses:

Tengu Man - The reason it's best to go with this guy first is because the Ice Wave only works against him if he abuses the diving attack (where he yells 'Here you go!' and swoops, then drops down and stays still for a moment).

Clown Man - You may know this one already, but I suggest using the Tornado Hold during his swinging.  Also, pray that he doesn't use Thunder Carnival - that attack will suck time away that you could have used to shoot him.

Grenade Man - Wield that Thunder Claw like it's a baseball bat and Grenade Man's the pitcher who just beaned you.  (Translation: Either smash Grenade Man with it or hit the bombs back at him - only the Thunder Claw can do both.)

Frost Man - Nothing to report.

Duo - From my experience, using Flash Bombs and/or Tornado Hold seems best.

Sword Man - Nothing to report.

Search Man - This boss is EXTREMELY difficult without the Flame Sword - believe me, I've tried fighting him without it, and it's possible but not a good idea.

Astro Man - Just remember to shove the Homing Sniper in his face and everything will be all right.

Aqua Man - Make sure to wait until he uses the Water Pillar attack (or whatEVER the thing is called) before Astro Crushing him, and make sure to alternate the Astro Crush and a standard charged shot.

I'll come up with more to add to this later.

So basically get either the Arrow Shot or Laser Shot. The Hyper Slider might be useful but I will try it out. Of course, correct me if I read wrong.

Thanks for those strategies. Testing will begin soon.

EDIT: First, I want to say thanks to the Infinite Mega Ball Bounce. That is really awesome to perform and I can almost do it everytime I try.

As for the Tengu Man bounce, it is very hard like you said. I am going to practice it a lot though because I want to do it. Im real close to performing it in the first Bubble area. I just need to figure out the position to start and get the timing down.
Edit history:
Ifrit: 2006-02-20 09:49:37 pm
After about 30 attempts of the bounce I have to stop. I almost have the jump perfected in Tengu Man's stage though. I need to hit the last bounce and then I am in.

Suzaku, if you didn't know you can change directions while doing the bounce. I find it easier doing that than going at an angle for the bounce.

I have a couple of questions for those interested in the run:

Does anyone care about segmented or single segment? I might end up doing both but I am probably going to go segmented for now because of the Tengu Man bounce.

Would going underground save time in the future? It has 3 bolts that are easy to get. Tengu Man's stage has 3 more to get. After that I am not sure because I haven't practiced past Tengu Man yet. Getting those thats a total of 6, enough (plus an extra) to get the Laser/Arrow Shot.

I think I had more but I suddenly forgot them.

EDIT: The first bubble area is (probably) impossible to bounce out of. The only way would be death abuse and I really do not like that. The second bubble room is very easy to do though. I might keep trying the first room though.
I don't care if it's segmented or not.
Fucking Weeaboo
I think the only Mega Man game that should be segmented is Rockman & Forte.  This game isn't that hard, other than battling Wily.  Somebody better than me should be able to handle it, even with the lack of E-Tanks in this game.

Ifrit: 2006-02-20 10:31:40 pm
I can agree with Rockman and Forte.

Im not sure about segmenting now. Im not really having major problems yet that would deem segmenting but I wanted to make sure. I guess I will see in the future.

By the way, what was your time up until Wily?

nate: 2006-02-20 11:54:29 pm
as always, information about version differences can be found at mmhp. thankfully, it's nothing to write home about - just means they'll have to be timed differently if we somehow ever get a saturn run (i was thinking about it, but now if someone's going to do psx i'm not going to do saturn and have it look like i was anti-competitive).

edit: it has come to my attention that this topic's title is missing a slide!.

Quick post here. I just want to say that the Laser Shot is horrible. Im going to try the Arrow Shot tomorrow though.

EDIT: Is that better Nate? Or would you like them alternating?

No no it's Jump! Slide! Jump! Slide!  As to avoid the pause between slides.
